Description
She inherits the bookshop of her dreams . . . But she has to run it with the ex she vowed never to speak with again. "Book lovers, book clubs, and anyone who's ever dreamed of owning a bookstore will adore this cleverly interwoven story" (Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Shelterwood). Full of fall vibes, The Second Story Bookshop is perfect for fans of Debbie Macomber and Gilmore Girls.
Shelby Thatcher adores working in the charming small-town bookshop her grandmother opened years ago. Since high school she's helped Gram turn the shop into a community hub for book lovers in the lakeside town of Grandville, NC. When her beloved grandma passes away, Shelby inherits the bookstore. But to her shock, Gram leaves half ownership to Gray Briggs, the man who broke Shelby's heart years ago.
Grandville residents have been vilifying Gray as long as he can remember. After graduating high school he couldn't skip town fast enough, even though it meant leaving the girl he'd fallen deeply in love with and alienating her family once and for all. Now he's back, the beneficiary of his elderly friend's will. Facing the town's animosity is difficult, but seeing Shelby again is sheer torture. No one could ever stir his heart the way she did.
As the adversaries are forced to work together, Gram's beyond-the-grave scheme is working--Shelby's old feelings for Gray begin to resurface. But the problems that destroyed their relationship before still remain, and a new one surfaces--one that threatens Gram's beloved bookshop. Is their love doomed to fail again, or will they find a way to make it work this time around?
If you're looking for an enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance set in a cozy lakeside bookshop brimming with healing, heart, and Southern charm, The Second Story Bookshop is your perfect, feel-good escape. Let Shelby and Gray's tender journey remind you that sometimes the path back to love starts at the front step of a bookstore.

Wow, what a book! I love anything that Denise Hunter writes--- her stories are always the perfect blend of romance, heart and small-town charm. In this particular story though, we get to see some of the downsides of living in a small-town: like what happens when you're an outcast in that town. Gray and Shelby had such a beautiful romance... though certainly not one without its challenges. They were unlikely high school sweethearts, with him being judged by the town by his father's reputation, but things ended badly when he left town after graduation. Years later, when they have to work together to save the bookshop that Shelby's grandmother unexpected left to both of them, all of those old feelings start to resurface... right along with the old challenges. I really love a good second chance romance, and this one was done so well. The story alternates between their high school romance and the present day, and I loved seeing them fall in love for the first time but also seeing their personal growth as well. I couldn't help but feel for Gray and all that he'd gone through... it made seeing them get this second chance at a happily ever after all that much sweeter. If you love a Christian romance with small-town drama, fantastic chemistry, and a hard fought happily ever after, this is absolutely one not to be missed.

The Second Story Bookshop pulled me right in with the rich smell of books and the sounds of turning pages. This sweet, second chance romance will grab your attention and keep you until the very last page. I loved meeting and following the rekindling love story of Shelby and Grey. When her grandmother leaves the bookshop to both Shelby and Grey, will they be able to put aside past problems and work together to save the shop? This book has all the feels and a perfect story book ending. I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and am writing this review voluntarily.

The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter. I love her books. Great second chance romance for bullied and misjudged Gray and Shelby the new owner of the bookstore after her grandmother passing. Heartwarming healing for both characters. Great beach read or just curl up on your couch and enjoy. Thank you to #NetGalley and #ThomasNelson Fiction for this Arc. This is my honest review. Being an avid reader and lover of books, I really enjoyed THE SECOND STORY BOOKSHOP by DENISE HUNTER. The author has told a story about small town living against the background of Selby Thatcher’s Gram’s beloved bookstore, which her ex-boyfriend, “bad boy” Grayson Briggs, is trying to help her save…..
Gray’s return to Grandville, North Carolina, has brought out the worst in the people of Grandville who cannot seem to forget his father’s sins or Gray’s alleged cheating at school. When things become really dangerous for him, and Selby and her family by association, he sees no choice but to leave the town that hates him…..
The characters are memorable and their emotions well portrayed. This is a story about truth against lies, the power of love, and second chances.
I highly recommend this most enjoyable read.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.

I loved the setting of the main character working in/eventually owning a bookstore. This is a great example of the second chance romance trope done in a very tasteful way. This is one of my new favorites from Denise Hunter.

Boy! Was I happy to see another novel by Denise Hunter! She's just such an amazing storyteller that I couldn't put this story down! I didn't want it to end.
I loved Shelby and Gray from the moment I opened their story. They were a delight in getting to know.
The setting was perfect since I love books so very much! I love a bookstore setting. Feels like home to me.
2nd chance romance are right up my alley so I knew I'd love this story and I did!!
I did have to snicker in some places though. Some scenes were just too cute.
However; there are a few tough subjects that Hunter has done well in making them realistic.
I definitely don't like these things either. It makes me sad and angry whenever I see it done to others. This is what makes parts of the story sad for me.
I'm giving this book 5 stars for keeping me entertained all the way through. I highly recommend.
My thanks for a wonderful read. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine.

Fantastic Romantic Fiction! Loved this book so much! Even quoted from the book to my husband on our anniversary " Mature love grows deeper, stronger, with a beauty all its own." Another sigh worthy story with a message! Definitely worth the read. This book was provided by the author and publisher through NetGalley. All thoughts expressed are my own opinions.

As with all of Denise Hunter's books. I loved it. This is about Shelly who loves working in the charming bookstore that grandmother owned in the Lakeside town of Granville. When Gram [asses away she leaves 51% of the Bookstore to Sheely and 49% to Gray. He and Shelly were friends when in high school and Gram really cared for Gray. Gray wasn't accepted well in town as his dad killed someone there. Gray joined the military and then made a name for himself in the town of River Bend. . He came back to town to help Shelly get the bookshop on track, See what they go through and does he finally get acceptance in town. Does he and Shelly end up together. A GREAT READ.

You just can't go wrong with a Denise Hunter book! I adored this sotry with it's lovable characters, second chance romance, reconciliations and justice finally happening. Of course, saving the inherited bookshop in NC (my home state) is a huge bonus too. Great book with a great message!

Denise Hunter has such a brilliant skill in engaging her readers with relatable characters and life situations. The path for Shelby and Gray was beyond difficult and it seemed that their only support was Shelby's deceased grandmother, in life and beyond the grave. 'The Second Story Bookshop' is a tender story of redemption portrayed personally and in a larger sense from a community. I shed some tears and would highly recommend it.

Shelby and Gray’s story is very emotional. Amazing characters, loss, second chances, family, a small town and many challenges all make this a book you won’t be able to sit aside.

This was a very sweet summer/beachy read! While I have not read much by Denise Hunter, I don't think of her for action or suspense, so the bit of intensity near the end was a surprise but it fit perfectly into the story when everything is revealed.
I love books about bookshops. I love second chances. So this book had a lot going for it before I even started! One of my far-out dreams is to own a bookshop but until then, I'll settle for reading about them. This one has a brilliant title and I loved how the name holds multiple meanings! It's so clever and fun.
This book has some flashbacks and I felt like the back and forth between past and present was very well done. I appreciated actually getting the backstory rather than just having the characters allude to it. I think it added depth to the challenges and the characters to see the past play out on the page.
Shelby and Gray were wonderful characters. I also liked Caleb and Liddy, especially when it came to them interacting in Shelby's life.
I'd say that, overall, this book was sweet and wholesome. Yes there are several descriptions of Gray's physique and lots of passion to the kissing, but personally, I was okay with it for the sake of the whole story. It wasn't enough to keep me from reading it again. But it is there and I wanted to mention it for the people who need to be careful of those things.
Denise Hunter can certainly write an entertaining tale. I've read a few of her books, and this one didn't disappoint. Hunter is an autobiy author for me!
Michelle H, Reviewer
The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter is about former high school sweethearts, Shelby and Gray. When Shelby's grandmother dies she leaves behind the bookshop that she ran with Shelby. Shelby is surprised to find out that she only inherited 51% of the bookshop and Gray inherits the other 49%. The relationship between them ended poorly and Shelby wants nothing to do with him but she takes up his offer to stay and help for a little while since he is good at business, a skill she lacks.
This is a very sweet and easy read that could easily be transformed into a Hallmark film. The chemistry between Shelby and Gray is palpable even through the pages of the book. You learn what happened between the two of them in their youth through periodic flashbacks. I really felt bad for the character of Gray due to the way the town treats him even though he did nothing to deserve it. The ending of the book was beautiful and made me tear up a bit while reading.

What an absolute joy and blessing it was to receive an ARC of this book. I had been highly anticipating this one, so when I saw it in my inbox, I may have squealed just a little. I couldn’t wait to dive in, and it did not disappoint.
(Thank you @netgalley @thomasnelson for the arc!)
This story was everything I love in a cozy romance: sweet, emotional, and full of that small-town charm Denise Hunter does so well. Shelby and Gray’s second-chance love story tugged at my heart in all the right ways, and the bookshop setting made it feel even more special like I was being wrapped in a soft, bookish hug.
I had the best of both worlds with this one reading the ARC and listening to the audiobook and I genuinely loved both experiences. The narrator brought so much heart and warmth to the story. She didn’t just tell it she felt it and made each emotional moment land just right.
Also… I may or may not have dropped my Kindle on my face trying to stay awake and read one more chapter. Worth it. 😂
If you’re like me and love second-chance romances, cozy bookshop settings, and stories with heart (and no spice!), this one deserves a spot on your fall reading list. It’s tender, uplifting, and exactly what I needed.
🧡 Truly grateful to have gotten an early copy of this gem—it’ll be one I revisit again.
Be sure to look for it October 7th 2025!!
This author has captured my heart with her writing and also the characters in this book, I could not put it down once i started reading.
When Shelby Thatcher arrives for the reading of her beloved grandmother’s will, she is shocked to discover that her former high school boyfriend, Gray Briggs, is also in attendance. Their breakup had been painful, and they hadn’t seen each other in years; Shelby had vowed never to speak to him again.
Having worked at her grandmother’s bookshop since high school, Shelby had helped transform it into a cherished haven for book lovers in their small town of Grandville, NC. To her surprise, she learns that she has inherited 51% of the bookshop, while Gray receives 49%. After graduating high school, Gray left town and never returned—his past marked by bullying and the stigma surrounding his family. His father is serving a prison sentence for the murder of a prominent local figure, and his mother passed away when he was very young, leaving him to be raised by his grandmother, who was a close friend of Shelby's grandmother.
Gray quickly agrees that the bookshop should belong solely to Shelby and willingly signs over his 49%. However, when unexpected issues arise regarding the bookstore, Gray offers to stay and help her resolve them. As they work together, they uncover more problems than they anticipated, forcing both Shelby and Gray to confront their past and their lingering feelings for each other.
This captivating story is filled with emotional ups and downs. While old feelings begin to surface with both Shelby and Gray, the same problems remain as well.
Every book by Dennis Hunter captures my heart and attention right from the start. I could hardly put this book down until the last page was turned, and even now this heartfelt story lingers.
First of all, I absolutely love it when there is more to the title than what meets the eye!! I’m not going to spoil what that little nugget is however. It’s a great life lesson.
Denise Hunter’s last few books have gone up to a whole other level. Her books are always good and very enjoyable. These last few, though, have reached CANNOT MISS A THING SHE WRITES status!
I immediately felt connected to the main character, Shelby, through the close relationship she had with her late grandmother. She also loves books, reading, family, friends, and her man.
Sometimes life circumstances can be rough. Some people jump to conclusions, bully, and push their power around. This is central to this story and this community. It’s the catalyst for Shelby and Gray’s relationship breaking up the first time when they were 18.
When the will of Shelby’s late grandma’s will pushes them together, it’s not pretty. But they become drawn together to save the bookshop. The shadows and completely unfair attitudes of the past are still at large all these years later.
Since I just read the first 3 books of the author’s Riverbend series in the last few months, it was fun to have those main characters mentioned at points during the story.
This novel kept me engaged throughout and I think it’s a beautiful story. I strongly recommend this book! The ending and epilogue left my heart full as well as my eyes. With tears. The best kind.
*** Huge thanks to Thomas Nelson and Net Galley for providing me with an advanced digital copy. My honest review is in my own words.

“The Second Story Bookshop” was a delight to read, with an easy-to-follow story of two individuals working together to revive a family-run book store after a huge loss. It was great to experience this story, and the characters and the story arc were well-written and easy to follow. I would recommend it as an enjoyable and uplifting read.
I was completely charmed by The Second Story Bookshop. As someone who loves small-town romances and second chances, this book hit all the right notes. The story follows Shelby Thatcher, who inherits her beloved grandmother’s cozy bookshop in Granville, North Carolina, only to discover she must share ownership with Gray Briggs, the ex who broke her heart years ago.
Shelby is warm, determined, and deeply rooted in her community, while Gray is the classic misunderstood outsider trying to make amends. Watching them navigate their shared past, the town’s judgment, and the future of the bookshop was both heartwarming and emotionally satisfying. There’s tension, tenderness, and just the right amount of drama to keep the pages turning.
I really enjoyed this contemporary romance. I loved the flashbacks to senior year. The reader gets the back love story of Gray and Shelby. The narrator was wonderful and were easy to listen to. There are no swears or alcohol and level 2 kisses only. I received a complimentary copy from @Netgalley and @thomasnelson. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I love Denise Hunter books so much and I read quite a few during my local library’s Summer Reading program so I was extremely excited to read this when I saw it available on NetGalley! One thing I love about Denise Hunter books is there’s absolutely no chance of the Lord’s name taken in vain or F-bombs being thrown! Those are the two things I won’t allow in the books I read or the tv I watch!

The Second Story Bookshop is all the things I have come to love and expect from Denise Hunter’s love stories. Intriguing story with depth, well developed characters, poignancy and strong emotions, and heartfelt romance that touches on all the right places. Shelby and Gray have a genuinely deep love for one another and have since they first met; it’s a one of a kind, once in a lifetime kind of love. All the odds were stacked against them when they were young and sadly, they caved and let it go. I am so glad there is room for second chances because these two deserve it. I love Gray as a character. He has been handed a terrible hand in life and even in that, he continues to work hard and rise above. Shelby is fiercely loyal to her family and her bookshop and wants nothing more than to continue her grandma’s legacy. The immediate chemistry between these two is palpable and I love how the story takes place in modern day with flashbacks to tell their backstory. Gray continues to show up and help, because it’s the right thing to and because he’s desperate to offer his apology to Shelby. She may not want to hear what he has to say, but her grandma knew she needed it for closure. I love the way he showed up, even when everyone was against him. I love how Shelby saw what no one else could see and championed for him. I loved the way they were willing to stand up to everyone for what was right and, in the end, as it should, love always wins. There are so many feelings and emotions and tender moments of raw love, and I could not get enough of these two.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley, and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
I am a huge Denise Hunter fan and this book definitely did not disappoint!!
If you don’t believe in soulmates, Gray and Shelby will definitely have you rethinking that! This book does cover some tough topics (TW for bullying) and I found myself frustrated with the town and the way they treated Gray. Denise wove such a beautiful story of love and hope and healing.. and best of all it centered around a bookshop left to the both of them by Shelby’s Grandmother.
Perfect for lovers of second chance, small town vibes, clean romance, and lots of character growth and depth.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for this ARC. These views are entirely my own!

“The Second Story Bookshop” is a sweet tale of “second stories” in people’s lives. Denise Hunter has written a story full of characters that readers will love and others that readers will love to hate. The plot is excellent, with enough momentum to keep the story flowing steadily without it feeling rushed. Shelby and Gray have a history, and as you read through this story in the present, the author gives us glimpses of their past together. Shelby’s father and brother have some struggles in their relationship, and the author did such a great job of giving us glimpses of that struggle, and then really bringing some of those issues full-circle and walking them through it in a way that we as readers got to “be there,” while also not having that part of the story bog us down and derail us from the larger plot. There is a deeper theme in this story besides everyone getting a second story, and that is one of not judging others based on past family mistakes and on the content of gossip rather than facts. I loved the way the past events were woven into the present to keep us informed well, just when we needed it, while also not overwhelming us with a huge information load right at the beginning of the story. I thought it was nice to have Gram’s little words of wisdom or tough encouragement sprinkled throughout the story, too. I highly recommend this book. It is a wonderful literary escape that is not just all fluff, but also causes the reader to think a bit and maybe grow as an individual as well.

I loved this read, filled with emotions, and injustice. We follow the main characters through high school, and then ten years beyond, when their story starts again.
As the story opens Shelby's beloved Grandmother has passed away, she worked daily with her running the bookstore. Her old boyfriend is back in town, and then shows up at the reading of her Grandmother's will! What is going on?
As we journey with Gray, we learn how hard his life has been, and the reasons why he left town. I wanted justice here, not fair!
Gray has a deal with Shelby, and he is helping to turn around the bookstore. We also meet a darling baby, and a dog that worms his way into their hearts.
Keep page turning, as things go from bad to worse, if possible.
I loved the epilogue, and looking forward to my next Denise Hunter read!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.

The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter - oh my! A swoon worthy male main character in Gray. A female main character in Shelby who pulls for the underdog. Can they have a second chance? So many twists and turns with past hurts. Can forgiveness be possible? Loved this one.
Releases Oct. 7th. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
When Shelby Thatcher's grandmother passes away she learns that she has been given her little bookstore, which isn't entirely unexpected, but the brought that is unexpected is that she won't be running the store alone. Her grandmother decided to give half of the store to the guy that Shelby would rather not have anything to do with...as he is the man that broke her heart a long time ago.
The Second Story Bookshop is a beautifully penned story of healing, hope, forgiveness, acceptance, and rekindling lost love. Shelby and Gray have a past that holds a lot of hurt, and her grandmother knew the only way they'd heal from it would be to face it head on. So she created a way for that to happen, and while Shelby is appreciative for the bookstore she isn't so happy about the co-owner she'll be running it with. Being in the same room as Gray is a special kind of torture, he was the boy she thought she'd spend forever with, and he wound up walking away instead. How do you forgive someone for that? For breaking your heart so deeply? Good thing they have an angel on their side to help them get through it.
This book really hit it's intended mark for me. It was captivating, sweet and had many moments that touched my heart! Highly recommend!

as soon as i saw this book i new i wanted to read it. no questions asked. as soon as i saw that name...DENISE HUNTER i knew i neeeeeded to read this book. so when i was lucky enough to get to do so all other books were put aside on my tbr pile and she went straight to the top. Denise is my go-to never fails becoming a fast favourite author. her words, her work is stunning. after finishing the summer of you and me and being totally blown away by it i was eager and excited for what was to come.
and i am soooooo glad i get the privilege to say wahooo this one was just as beautiful and just as solid in the heart tugging and heart healing books.
i was captivated from the moment i read the first lines. meeting Shelby was just like with all Denise's characters a new win and how to write characters. we are bought to her story when her grandmother passes away and she learns she has inherited her bookstore. but there is a caveat as her grandmother has left half the store to someone else. and thats the kicker. because the other half has been left to someone she doesn't want half of anything with not least because her broke her heart in in half, no pieces, once upon a time.
but these two have a past. and one meeting again clearly a now. and boy do we want their future too! seems her grandmother new a thing or two, and this little plan of hers was her own way, her own gift to them both. of course Shelby is not happy. who would be? being with Gray again is awful for her. he walked away from her once, she loved him, she was planing her future with him. you can only just get through that. she certainly cant forgive it....
can time heal? can hope heal? can second chances happen?
i love this new small town book. the writing of the central and side characters are all fab. and the themes alongside the plot go hand in hand but never over take each other. i love how when we get to know the side of Gray and how is and was treated so much of his story opens up. and its truly once again that age old line of we dont truly know whats going on for anybody. and also how to let people in. walk a mile in another shoes and all that...
there was hard work done in this book. some serious mountains climbed and some gentle understanding given.
this is another delight from Denise. i say it once again how lucky i feel to read her work. its just wonderful. and it truly makes me smile and then feel ever so lucky to be someone who can read, get job, and get escape from books.

As an avid reader, how could I not choose this book to read! From the very beginning, I immediately fell in love with the feel of the bookshop. I adored how the author added other author names and book titles into her own work. I enjoyed this book immensely. The author has such a way of wrapping you up in the lives of Gray and Shelley, and telling their backstory while also unfolding the events of the book. If you love bookshops, as well as a sweet romance, then this book is for sure for you!!
The Second Story Bookshop has a sweet setting in the lakeside town of Granville, North Carolina. The bookshop was Shelby's Gram's "second story" after her husband passed. Now that Gram is gone too, Shelby is left with 51% of the business and surprisingly, her high school boyfriend Gray was given the other 49%. They've been apart for years but now must come together to get the bookshop out of debt amidst her family's skepticism that Gray is really a good guy who just wants to help. He has such a bad history with the town...nevertheless, with The Second Story Bookshop we're getting a sweet contemporary romance with a hero who Shelby really can trust! I couldn't wait to read it and I bet if you like a clean romance as much as I do, you'll find it just as captivating!
Kim Churchill did a wonderful job narrating this book.

Ok, hear me out! Not a religious person nor am I really a soft romance girly BUT THIS, THIS BOOK! I love a good romance with tension, an underdog, and a its been you this whole time scenario. Throw in a small town, a bookstore and you have me hooked which is what I was. I listened to and read this book. It was great, easily a 5 star in my opinion. Sometimes you just need a low to no spice physical romance book. So if you have a thoughts and feeling face, don’t want people looking the other way while you are in public then this is it. Or maybe you are like me, you have kids and your reading is listening to audiobooks in the car then this is it. Thank you Denise Hunter for a great read/listen!
This may be my favorite Denise Hunter book of all-time! This book is worthy of 10 stars! It is a beautiful story of first love, family, heartbreak, grace, and second chances. I found it brought all the emotions in me causing me to devour the book, and I hated to see it end!
Shelby and Gray are high school sweethearts who are torn apart by life circumstances that leaves Shelby with a broken heart and her family jaded against Gray. When Shelby’s Gram dies, her spirit lives on when she meddles in their lives by the reading of her will. Gray’s return to town forces him and Shelby to face their pasts and a very unforgiving town.
Filled with lovable characters that bring this story to life, some will have you laughing others ready to yell at them. Beautifully written to drawn you in from the beginning to the very end. It is one of those books that leaves you smiling and feeling like it was time well spent when you turn the page.
This book is absolutely wonderful and a must read! It is one I see myself reading again and again. Definitely one of Hunter’s best!

This is a great story of forgiveness and second chances! Good character development and the story has a pull to keep you guessing how things will come together. I love the refreshing dialogue and humanness portrayed throughout the story.
Wow! This is my new favorite read. Denise Hunter did a great job with this heartwarming read. Shelby and Gray’s rocky relationship is heartbreaking and heartwarming. Characters are spot on. Mason and Brendon Remington are nefarious and needed a take down. Justice and redemption comes. I can see this as a spin off of more books to come. I want to know more about Grays father after parole. Haley is a book in herself. Shelby’s dad needs his ever after. Shelby’s mother leaves a story untold. Caleb and Libby have a story to be unearthed. Hopefully there will be spinoff’s to bring these characters stories to light. Recommend strongly. Such a cute read! I love the cozy second chance romance and of course the bookstore setting is adorable! Definitely recommend for a light feel good story.
The second story bookshop was such a sweet story. It was romantic, enjoyable, and the characters had great chemistry. I found myself quickly getting attached to the story, and at first I found it to be a little quirky for my taste, but after a few pages I couldn’t put it down! I read it in about 4 days (which is fast for me being a busy mom), and I would recommend it to my followers! The conflict in the story was believable, and I loved the description of some of the details (like the author described baby Ollie) and the description of the settings, most specifically the bookstore. The imagery was so vivid that I was easily able to envision it and the changes they made. Hailey’s character development was probably my favorite and I hope other readers enjoy that little bonus. Shelby also demonstrated great character growth throughout the story, which I compare it to how the book started vs how it ended. I really enjoyed her pov but I probably enjoyed Grays a lot more haha!

I can always count on a Denise Hunter book to get me out of a reading funk and this one was no exception. May be a new favorite! I loved Shelby and Gray’s story set at the second story bookstore (such an appropriate name). My heart ached for all Gray had gone through throughout his life and it was so nice to see how he kept the faith and rose above it all. An absolute wonderful book! Highly recommend!

First off thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to read and review this book. These thoughts are that of my own.
This book in my opinion was a wonderful cozy read by Denise Hunter. I have read many books by her and always enjoy the novels she comes out with. This one I felt was perfect! I always love books about bookstores - they bring the epic feelings of coziness that is very much needed. This book has a bit of a catch - when Shelby grandmother passed away she left the bookstore to Shelby and to Gray. Gray was not really accepted well into the small town and he had broke Shelby heart many years prior. Like a trick put on by her belated Grandmother they end up having to meet together again. Over time they have to work through their differences. I really enjoyed the whole story line. It was a light enjoyable read and would recommend it to anyone who looking for a cozy romance to read. I honestly look forward to Denise Hunter books! I can't wait to see what's next!

Absolutely loved this story. Any story set in a bookshop always gets me to want to read it. This story of old loves, small town gossip, and a grandma loved, brings all the warm feelings. Loved this love story again and the saving of the bookshop along with a town bully causing trouble.

I read The Second Story Bookshop in one sitting, avidly devouring it. It had layers of emotions and character development that made it a compelling and addictive read.
I loved all the different aspects of this story - second changes, connection, bullying (didn't love that one so much), redemption and forgiveness, overcoming the past and love. Gray and Shelby loved as a teenager but it all ended badly and here they are 11 years later meeting again. Shelby has to trust Gray against her and her family's instincts. Gray is determined to show Shelby who he is now and that he is worthy of her trust. Their relationship isn't helped by the interference of a town who knows how to hold a grudge and believes all the rumours that circled 11 years earlier.
I loved this book - it was an easy, sweet read that had me feeling all the emotions and enjoying the drama and romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book thanks to Thomas Nelson Fiction and Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Shelby Thatcher has worked at her grandmother's bookstore for years. After her grandmother's sudden passing, Shelby finds herself at the lawyer's office, where she is shocked to see Gray Briggs—the man who broke her heart years ago. Gray has been given 49 percent ownership of the bookstore. He left town at 18 after enduring years of harassment from the townspeople. While Gray doesn’t want the bookstore, he wants to explain to Shelby the real reason he left. He agrees to sign over his share to her and offers to help her make the bookstore profitable again.
However, the people who drove him away years ago are still set on getting rid of him and start harassing him again. When the townspeople begin boycotting the store because of Gray’s involvement, it becomes clear that the truth about what happened years ago needs to come to light.
A sweet second-chance romance. Small town has their positive and negative sides shown. Bullying has repercussions. A heartwarming story. Thanks to the publisher for providing a copy via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.
I could hardly wait to read The Second Story Bookshop. Denise Hunter has long been an auto-read author for me. And I don’t see that changing.
The book is built around Shelby, who has been the creative force behind her grandma’s bookstore. When Gram dies, Shelby inherits the store, but to her horror, she becomes joint owner with Gray, the man who broke her heart right before skipping town.
Denise Hunter is remarkably talented at pulling her readers in to caring about her characters, and I love a good underdog. I felt Shelby’s pain, and Gray’s quiet agony as the towns people vilify him for hurting one of their own. But there’s a backbone of honor running through Gray and I was on his side throughout.
If you like small town romances, or tropes where exes rekindle after overcoming significant obstacles then this is a book you should definitely read.
I received a copy of The Second Story Bookshop from the publisher via NetGalley. The enjoyment is all my own.

The first Denise Hunter book I ever read was Sweetbriar Cottage. Since then I have read every book she's written, and I always wait with bated breath for the next one to arrive. Yes, she's that good! Every book tugs heart strings, tying them in knots, then changes those knots to neat, tidy bows. I love her books so much!
The Second Story Bookshop brings together childhood sweethearts Shelby Thatcher and Gray Briggs. Shelby is the hometown sweetheart, and Gray is the town bad boy. Shelby has worked side-by-side with her grandmother to make the Second Story Bookshop the local hub, so when her grandmother dies she expects to inherit the shop outright. She is stunned to learn that Gray Briggs inherited half of the store, too. Why would her grandmother leave the store to the man who walked out on Shelby before he even graduated? They were in love, planning to be married as soon as they graduated, but he walked without ever talking to her. What could have brought him back?
As Shelby and Gray work together, their feelings begin to rekindle. but the closer they become, the more desperate someone is to drive him out of town. Can he stay in the town that has been suspicious of him and his family all his life? When real danger arrives on his doorstep, will walking away again keep Shelby and her family safe?
Told in a dual time period manner, The Second Story Bookshop has everything I look for in a romance. The main characters are shown as teens who started as friends, and defied the odds and Gray's unwarranted reputation, to start planning a life together. It travels the ups and downs and gives glimpses of the thoughts behind their actions. By the end of the book, I was pulling for them to stay together, and I wanted to smack everyone in that town for being so blind!
Readers who love contemporary romance that slips into the past periodically and delivers every emotion need to pick up The Second Story Bookshop. If this is your first Denise Hunter book, you're in for a treat, and like me, you'll be looking for her other books to binge on!
I received this book AND the audio version as well through NetGalley, but every opinion here is mine!
The Second Story Bookshop is in Grandville, North Carolina. Shelby Thatcher inherits the shop from her grandmother who opened this many years ago. Viola Thatcher wanted something to keep herself busy after her husband passed away. While Shelby was in high school she worked at the shop to help her Gram. But it turns out the bookshop was left to two people. Shelby getting 51% and to Gray Briggs who gets 49%. Now what did Gram have in mind when she made this choice. I think Gram had a plan that she hoped would work out. You see Gray Briggs was a boyfriend in high school, he broke her heart then. But he left town suddenly for many reasons. He came back for Gram's funeral as he had a special place in his heart for her. She helped him out in time of need while in high school. Turns out his Grandma was best friends with Gram too.
So Shelby tired to get the shop back in her name only. But soon discovering she did not know all the goings on to run the shop. How did Gram budget the incoming and outgoing of the finances for shop? Soon learning she needed help, and it was Gray's help she needed. You see he had a degree in accounting. To his surprise how Gram took care of the books was not in Shelby's favor. Monies were taken from one place to help another part of the business, this made things so confusing. All this had to be changed for the success of the bookshop.
I wanted to read this book because of the title, my love for books and reading them. Being I have read other books penned by Denise Hunter, I knew I would love it. Thank you to Denise Hunter, Harper Collins Christen Publishing and Net Galley for giving me the opportunity to read it. It was so hard to put down each morning and evening.
As a fan of Denise Hunter’s writing, I was very happy to read her new book, The Second Story Bookshop. As always, her books warm my soul. I know they are written from a Christian viewpoint and that they will be a safe place. Although issues will arise within the pages, she can always find a way for a happy ending.
This story takes place in a small town where there are definite upper- and lower-class statuses. People judging others and forming opinions based on false gossip and economic levels. It was refreshing to read that not all the townspeople were small minded. A few stand out and stand up for the wrongly accused.
This is a second chance at love story and also, a friends to romance. I like these genres very much. I read a few reviews by readers prior to reading this book and it was brought up that there was ‘cheating’ involved in the plot. I do not believe that. If someone is dating causally and no promises are made for a future together (and who does that seriously in high school anyhow), if they meet up (to talk) with someone else to get to know them, I do not consider that cheating. To each their own opinion, though. I think that reviewer might be dealing with personal issues that I never did, so I will agree to disagree with them.
I honestly was wondering how this book would end happy, since I thought there was no way that this small town, full of prejudice against a harmless child/adult (for the sins of his father), would come around and change their opinions. I have to say that the plot was believable and satisfying.
A sincere thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for giving me the pleasure of reading the advance reader copy, with no obligation to write a review. My review is written freely as a hobby, and is totally my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the ARC.

When Shelby's beloved grandma passes away, Shelby is in for the shock of her life. Shelby's grandma leaves a 49% interest in the store to Shelby's ex-boyfriend, Gray. There are more secrets that will be revealed as Gray steps in to help Shelby with the financial part of running the book store. This is another great book by Denise Hunter. This book is about love, family, forgiveness, hope and redemption. I received a complimentary copy of this book. The opinions expressed are my own. #netgalley #secondstorybookshop #thomasnelson

This is another great book by Denise Hunter! I’m not going to summarize it because that has already been done, but my favorite character is, of course, Grayson Briggs! He’s obviously handsome, but he’s also got unflappable integrity. Even though he is bullied and treated unfairly he never stoops to the bully’s level. He never lashes out in anger. I also enjoyed Phoebe Bell’s unabashed adoration of Gray. She cracked me up! My favorite scene in the book was the town council meeting. I’ll leave it at that because I don’t want to give spoilers.
Let me just give one piece of advice: if you see Denise Hunter’s name on a book, read it!

I absolutely loved this book, it is so hard not to. The main characters, Shelby and Gray, have a rocky history and each has a lot of childhood baggage. But, first love is hard to forget and move on from, especially when it is meant to last. Both characters made mistakes early on as teens, and Shelby's grandmother finds a way in her death to bring the two together to work out their differences. Their road to happily ever after is far from easy, but the journey is worth the ending. I could not put this book down. Yes, it is predictable, but what a story! My emotions were all over the place from rage, anger, hurt, sorrow ( I shed a few tears at times), to laughter. A must read for those who want a really good feel good love story.

Shelby Thatcher loved working in the bookstore that was owned by her beloved Gram. When her Gram suddenly died Shelby assumed that Gram would leave the bookstore to her. She was shocked to learn that Gram had left her only half. The other half was left to Gray Briggs. I suspected the reason Gram had left Gray part of the bookstore and i was not wrong. Gray and Shelby had been sweethearts in high school but broke off when they went different directions for school. Gray had a rough life. His mother was not in his life and his father was sent to prison for killing someone. Gray had a loving grandmother who raised him after his father was sent to prison but the stigma of having a parent in prison left a stigma on Gray. He was mistreated by the town people and was mistreated by his fellow classmates. He lost a scholarship due to someone telling a lie about him. I normally like small towns in books. They are my favorite setting but the way Gray was treated was almost unforgiveable. Even Shelby's family did not treat him right. They disliked him because they felt he had hurt Shelby. Eventually Shelby and Gray rekindled their friendship but the town still mistreated Gray even after all the years that had passed. I can't give too much away. Don't want to spoil it but keep reading. You won't be disappointed even though you experience frustration with the way people treat Gray.

I did a combination of the digital copy and the audio for this book. The narration was by Kim Churchill and it was very good.
This is an inheritance story in which Shelby inherits part of the bookstore that she has worked in along side her aunt right up until her death. However, she is surprised to hear that her aunt left the other part to Shelby's old boyfriend that broke her heart. Gray hasn't been back to town for a long time. The town has shunned him for years and things are very uncomfortable for him.
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were very well developed and the story progression seemed believable.

I really enjoy Denise Hunter's writing. This book is very emotional, beautifully written and heartfelt. It follows Shelby and Gray, moving between their past and present. After Shelby's cherished grandmother passes away, she inherits the bookstore to manage on her own, with assistance from Gray.
Their teenage romance ended badly and now if Gram has her way they will have a second chance at love. However, many of the townspeople have deep-seated grudges and are determined to see Gray leave, regardless of the consequences.
The best part was seeing how everything would unfold. Please don’t skip the Epilogue !!
I enjoyed simultaneously listening and reading this one.

Denise Hunter's books have long been an immediate purchase for me! I love the way she tackles difficult subjects (grief, trauma, PTSD, etc from other books of hers) in a way that is somehow both realistic in how characters experience it and also full of hope. It was such a sweet second chance romance set in a sweet small town with a cozy feel. The story jumps back and forth between the main characters' high school relationship and present day lives. I loved getting to live out my dreams of owning a cute little bookshop in a small town vicariously through Shelby, who inherits her grandmothers beloved bookstore (although she's required to share it with Grey). The book was well paced and drew me in from the beginning, with likeable, relatable characters and a happy ending. Highly recommend!
Many thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Gray and Shelby. Happy sigh. I haven't read a Denise Hunter book in a while and I loved being transported to Grandville, NC and being enveloped in this small-town romance. Gray and Shelby were perfect characters for this second chance romance centered around a bookshop called Second Story. They individually had childhood trauma but also had past hurts together that initially worked against them. But spending a lot of time together trying to resuscitate a dying business brought them together and reminded them how good their relationship was once upon a time. Gray was a remarkable hero - patient in his suffering and driven in his love for Shelby and desire to get a college degree. Shelby's devotion to her family and the bookshop was admirable. They were relatable and lovable characters - one a downtrodden underdog and the other his fiercest champion and cheerleader. Though brief, I enjoyed catching up with Gavin from Riverbend series through Gray's work.
If you enjoy heart-warming small-town romance, this book will delight you. I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Thomas Nelson via NetGalley and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I absolutely adored The Second Story Bookshop! Denise Hunter has such a talent for creating heartfelt, small-town romances that feel so warm and real. What made this one extra special for me was the shout out to Chattanooga—I live just outside of Chattanooga, so it gave me such a thrill to see a familiar place mentioned in the story. It made the whole book feel even closer to home.
The bookshop setting was pure magic. I could practically hear the creak of the wooden floors and smell the old pages as I read. The romance was the perfect blend of sweet and emotional, with just enough tension to keep me hooked from beginning to end. The characters felt like real people, the kind you’d bump into at your favorite local coffee shop or bookstore, and I was rooting for them the whole way through.
This story wrapped me up in the best way—like a cozy blanket, a hot drink, and a stack of books on a rainy day. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves second chances, small-town charm, and of course, bookshops. Denise Hunter never disappoints!
I love Denise Hunter and I know I’ll always get a good story. The Second Story Bookshop was no different. After losing her grandmother Shelby finds out that she is inheriting her bookstore. Along with that she inherits issues she’s going to have to work through with the boyfriend who left her in high school with a broken heart. Can they put aside their differences and work together? There are other people in town who aren’t happy to see Grayson and would do anything to see the past stay in the past. This was an enjoyable read with heart and family.

The Second Story Bookshop is everything I love in a romance: excellent tension, small-town stakes, and characters whose pasts refuse to stay buried. Denise Hunter always crafts a compelling page-turner, and I was immediately swept up in Shelby and Gray’s story.
The push and pull between them is perfection. So much history packed with unresolved feelings, heartbreak, and the weight of family expectations in a town where reputations matter (perhaps more than they should). I especially loved how the influence of a powerful family cast long shadows, raising the stakes and giving readers the sense that maybe a happily ever after was out of the question. The cozy bookshop setting, the cat and the dog, and Shelby's close-knit family made me want to never leave Grandville.
This isn’t just a sweet romance set in a small-town bookstore. It's also a story about forgiveness, healing, and finding the courage to reclaim love even when the odds seem stacked against you. Fans of Debbie Macomber or Gilmore Girls will swoon over the charm and emotion.
I loved this book so much. It’s the kind of story that lingers long after you turn the last page. Highly recommend!
Thank you for the complimentary copy. All opinions shared here are my own.
I really enjoyed this second chance romance between Shelby and Gray. Crafty, crafty Gram, knowing they needed some forced proximity to reconnect and repair their love that never truly went away! And how well their skills complemented one another in the operation of the bookshop, which I found fascinating. I loved the growth in Shelby’s family between her father and brother. I was also glad that the love triangle wasn’t drawn out. The hate Gray received and the prejudice because of what his father had done grieved me and was just so unfair to him. But it made the ending so sweet and satisfying.
This is a well-written and an enjoyable small town second chance romance. The faith thread is very subtle. Clean with kisses only and no language. Employs flashbacks to show Shelby and Gray’s past relationship.
I received a complementary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. I was not asked to leave a positive review. My opinions are my own.
The Second Story Bookshop is a second chance Christian romance that takes place in small-town.
Shelby Thatcher has helped her Gram with her small-town bookshop, in Granville, since she was in high school. When her grandma passes away, Shelby inherits her bookshop, but only as a part owner. She is shocked to find out that the other owner is her ex, Grayson Briggs, who broke her heart years ago.
Grayson (Gray) Briggs has never been welcome, in the town Granville, due to his father’s mistakes. After he graduated from high school, he could not leave the town fast enough. The unfortunate part was that he had to leave behind the girl that he had fallen in love with. Upon learning that Gram had left him part of her bookstore, Gray wants to show Shelby that he’s sorry for everything that happened in the past and that he will do whatever he can to make it right.
Shelby and Gray decide to set aside their past in order to save Grams’s bookstore. Only problem is that both of them have a lot of problems to work through. Unbeknownst to Shelby and Gray, Gram has created a beyond-the-grave scheme, so that she could try and get Shelby and Gray to reconcile their differences. Shelby and Gray have always had undeniable chemistry. Everyone around them has always sensed it, especially Gram.
Shelby and Gray’s relationship was truly heartwarming. I really enjoyed how they always wanted what’s best for one another and how they loved each other through all the challenges that they faced. They’re both such selfless people who would do anything for the people they love. I was rooting for their relationship the entire time.
Denise Hunter did an amazing job writing characters that are relatable and have incredible character development. I loved how she wrote about Shelby and Graysons relationship in a dual timeline. It helped to show us what happened in their past and how those experiences shaped them into the people that they are in the present day.
Overall, I highly recommend this book. I honestly couldn’t it down!

Sharing ownership of her beloved grandmother’s bookstore with the one person she never wanted to see again is not what Shelby planned for her life. But Shelby’s grandmother, even from the grave, played matchmaker between Shelby and her high school boyfriend Gray Biggs.
This sweet story of a second chance at love brought on by the contents of a Will was a cute premise and the story didn’t disappoint. Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Nelson/Harper Collin’s for this eARC. I received a complimentary copy of this book without remuneration.

The story jumps between present day and 11 yrs ago and shares both Shelby and Gray’s points of view. Unfortunately, Gray’s circumstances are beyond his control. He is a good student and kind person but is disliked and mistreated by the community and has a bad reputation because of his dad’s behavior, even though Gray didn’t do anything wrong. He comes from nothing but builds a name for himself and is successful through hard work and determination. Shelby thinks his past actions toward her are unforgiveable, the reader can feel Shelby’s hatred of Gray, but I think she’s the one in the wrong. She knew his hopeless situation and should’ve been more understanding. He is a genuinely nice guy and stays to help her make the bookshop profitable, despite everyone in town trying to get him to leave.
The character development is excellent. I enjoyed the references to other authors and books, and I loved the heartwarming ending. The audiobook is excellent too. 5 stars! I’ve read three books by this author and recommend all of them. Thanks to the publisher for a review copy via NetGalley.

Shelby inherits her beloved Gram's book shop appropriately called the Second Story because she started it after she lost her husband. Shelby doesn't know it yet though that she is going to get her own second story too! This is a great read about leaning on family, friends and maybe learning a bit from the past.

The Second Story Bookshop, by Denise Hunter, is a well written story that is easy to read, enjoy and imagine. Shelby’s grandmother had recently passed away, and the family is now faced with clearing up the estate. They find surprises and work through family and personal issues in the process. But the biggest issue is Shelby was expected to receive the bookshop she helped her grandmother run, but she only inherited half, the other half was left to her ex-boyfriend. While Gray was not welcome in the community when he was younger, he still is not welcomed and agrees to only stay to work through the stores books and help Shelby get on her feet as the sole owner.
This is an enjoyable story to read. There is much unfinished business between Shelby and Gray from years earlier, and between her brother and father. This is a great story that caught my attention right away and held it to the very end. I appreciate the strength Gray has to stay and do what he feels is right despite the treatment he received from Shelby, her family and the community. I enjoyed his character the most, when he could have easily went back to his life, he stayed, he helped Shelby when she didn’t appreciate him. This is a wonderful story of moving forward, second chances and Grandmothers who know best.
I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this story; this is my honest review.
An epic romance with heartaches and a never ending true love, told with flashbacks from the past and present. I was rooting for Shelby and Gray from the get go and Denise Hunter imbued the characters with strength, perserverance and integrity. I'd love to see this book made into a Hallmark movie.

The Second Story Bookshop has all the heart, emotion, and small-town charm I’ve come to love from Denise Hunter!
This sweet second-chance romance follows Gray and Shelby, who fell in love as teens eleven years ago. A misunderstanding tore them apart, and Shelby’s heart never quite healed. When Gray shows up for her grandmother’s funeral—and she finds out her grandma made him part owner of her beloved bookshop—let’s just say things get awkward fast.
As they work together to keep the shop afloat, old feelings start creeping back in. But the town hasn’t forgiven Gray for what they think happened years ago, and Shelby isn’t sure she’s ready to trust him again.
I loved these two so much! Gray is strong, patient, and determined to prove himself, even when everyone’s against him. Shelby is sweet and stubborn, with her heart wrapped up tight after being hurt before. Their chemistry was amazing, and I found myself rooting for them the whole way through.
And that ending?! I didn’t see it coming—but it was so much better than I expected.
This story is such a beautiful reminder that none of us are perfect, and that forgiveness (both giving and receiving) is one of the bravest things we can do.
If you love small-town stories, second chances, and swoony clean romance, you’ll want this one on your shelf!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.
A heartwarming second-chance romance set in a cozy lakeside bookstore, this novel follows Shelby Thatcher as she inherits her grandmother’s beloved shop, alongside Gray Briggs, the man who once broke her heart.
Their forced partnership reignites old feelings amid small-town challenges and a new threat to the bookstore.
With charming characters and Southern warmth, this story beautifully explores forgiveness and the possibility of love’s return.
I’m a big DH fan and this story is absolutely perfect!
UNEXPECTED SECOND CHANCE
Denise Hunter never fails to capture the heart with her beautifully crafted, heartfelt stories, and "The Second Story Bookshop" is a shining example of her enduring talent! This enchanting story follows Shelby Thatcher, a woman with a dream as charming as her beloved grandmother's bookstore. When her Gram passes away, it’s expected that Shelby will inherit the shop—yet her plans take an unexpected twist. Her Gram has other ideas, including a surprising 49% co-ownership shared with Shelby’s former boyfriend, Gray Briggs—the guy who once broke her heart.
Hunter masterfully weaves a clever, engaging plot as she brings together these two long-estranged friends in a situation thick with awkwardness and longing. Gray, a successful construction professional, never pictured himself owning a bookstore, but he holds a deep respect for Shelby’s Gram and wants to honor her last wishes. They strike a daring deal: Gray will use his financial expertise to help save the store, and in return, he'll transfer his shares and walk away. Shelby can’t ignore the charm and complexity of Gray—even if he’s someone she’s been trying to forget, and even if he’s incredibly attractive.
As a financial crisis threatens to close the beloved shop, Shelby and Gray unite to face the challenge—rekindling respect, rediscovering feelings, and unveiling new facets of themselves along the way. Could Gram’s mysterious plan have been perfectly intended all along?
Thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy. My opinions are entirely my own.

I enjoyed reading The Second Story Bookshop, a contemporary romance with a dual storyline set in a small North Carolina town. Shelby’s grieving the loss of her beloved grandmother and she’s worried about how she’ll cope managing her grandmother’s bookshop on her own.
Shelby is shocked to see Gray, her high school sweetheart who left town and abandoned her eleven years ago, at the funeral home. The biggest shock of all is from her matchmaking grandmother who’d always liked Gray and left the bookshop to Shelby and Gray in her will.
Gray is an accountant and project manager at a construction company in Riverbend Gap. He returns to his hometown for the funeral and has no plans to stay in a town that never welcomed or accepted him. The bookshop inheritance from Shelby’s grandmother is unexpected and creates a lot of problems for Gray.
A delightful dual timeline romance unfolds as we journey with Gray and Shelby during their final year at high school and in the present day. The inheritance situation sets them up as enemies and brings up all their issues from high school. Shelby and Gray had difficult childhoods for different reasons and they have a lot of emotional baggage to unpack during the story.
Small town politics add to the obstacles Shelby and Gray must overcome to rebuild their broken relationship. Town secrets are revealed and I appreciated how all the story threads from the past and present day were tied up in a satisfying story ending. The faith elements, including redemption and forgiveness themes, come across as light on the page but they’re an integral part of the fabric of the story.
I recommend The Second Story Bookshop to contemporary romance readers who like enemies to love and dual timeline second chance romances with high school sweethearts, forced proximity from an inheritance, bookish characters, family drama, and relevant faith elements in the story.
Many thanks to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
5⭐️ Such a wonderful read. So many things I enjoy reading in a book; second chance romance, redemption, quiet hero, and so much more. 5⭐️ narration by @kimchurchillvoice. Definitely one of my favorite narrators to portray the point of view of both a female and a male characters. Absolutely love how Gray’s quiet frustration was portrayed. He wanted so desperately to not be held to the standard of what his father did that he almost refused to let his anger take over. And it was very noticeable in the narration. Of course, Shelby‘s sweet and gentle nature was very well portrayed. She was by no means a pushover though.
Shelby’s grandmother has passed away and left her the beloved bookstore. What she didn’t leave was 49% ownership and a thriving bookstore. When it’s discovered that the very man who abandoned her is given that 49%, Shelby knows this was her Gram’s last ditch effort to resolve past conflict. It’s been years since Gray left her behind with a broken heart. Can she let go of the past or will those feelings creep back in?
Gray doesn’t fully understand why almost half of the bookstore’s ownership was left to him. However, he knows that Shelby will need help fully taking over. He offers to help for a couple of weeks so Shelby can get on her feet and sign ownership fully to her. During the review of the financials, Gray begins to understand part of Gram’s plan. The bookstore is in desperate financial trouble. And Gray can’t help but be Shelby‘s knight in shining armor. Even when the town is trying to chase him off again.

Denise Hunter’s The Second Story Bookshop is an absolute delight from start to finish! This sweet second chance romance is set in a charming small town that feels like a character of its own, drawing readers into its cozy, welcoming embrace.
The characters are wonderfully crafted—relatable, endearing, and full of depth. Their journey is filled with heartfelt moments, tender reconnections, and believable growth that makes you root for them every step of the way. The plot is excellent, seamlessly weaving together themes of love, forgiveness, and hope without ever feeling rushed or predictable.

** “She’d lost the love of her life and needed another purpose. She called it her second story.” **
Denise Hunter delivers a lovely romantic story with just a touch of mystery in “The Second Story Bookshop,” a story of reconciliation and second chances.
Shelby Thatcher is devastated at the loss of her grandmother, who always promised she’d receive her beloved store, the Second Story Bookshop. So Shelby is shocked to learn that after receiving 51% ownership, Gram left 49% to Shelby’s ex-boyfriend, Grayson Briggs, the man who deeply broke her heart.
But when they learn the shop is in serious financial woes, can Shelby and Gray overcome their past to save the store? And might they rekindle their relationship, all while Gray battles the hatred he has always received from the town?
Hunter does a great job of creating a small town feel, almost like a Mitford, and developing a great cast of characters, all while adding some toe-curling romance, funny moments, and times of suspense and even danger. She also fills her novel with some great themes, like overcoming abandonment; stand up for the downtrodden; finding a purpose; forgiving not only one’s self but others; and we all deserve second chances to create our second story.
Fans of series like Irene Hannon’s “Hope Harbor” series and authors like Lisa Wingate and Karen Kingsbury will love “The Second Story Bookshop,” which is due out Oct. 7.
Five stars out of five.

Shelby Thatcher and Grayson Briggs were high school sweethearts whose love couldn’t withstand the weight of small-town judgment. When Gray’s father was implicated in a tragic bar fight, the town turned against the family, and Gray was unfairly branded as trouble. With the odds stacked against him, he left Shelby and the town in the dust and never return. More than a decade later, Shelby and Gray are brought back together when her grandmother leaves them joint ownership of her beloved but struggling bookshop. While Shelby wrestles with old heartbreak and lingering distrust, Gray steps in to help her get the bookstore’s finances back in order. As they work side by side, long-buried feelings resurface, and Shelby begins to see why she loved him in high school to the man Gray has become. This is a heartfelt second-chance romance layered with small-town dynamics, a bookstore and a dog. It is a story of forgiveness, and healing. This was my first-time Denise Hunter book, I really enjoyed it and will definitely be exploring more of her backlist. The audiobook narration was well done and added to the overall experience. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of The Second Story Bookshop.

The Second Story Bookshop is the first novel I've read by Denise Hunter, but after staying awake all night to read it in a single sitting clearly indicated that it won't be the last. I requested an advance reader copy of this novel by its title alone, also to try a new to me author, and because I owned a small-town bookstore for 17 years, and, as it turned out, went through many of the same financial issues that Shelby faced. This novel did not disappoint on any level, and since I was hooked from the start, it gets a 5-star rating.
As a reader, I'm a sucker for a second chance at romance novel, especially when there is more than a single issue that drives the couple apart--and in this novel, those issues were many. Add in a boy from the wrong side of the tracks, abandonment issues, bullying, small-town gossip, first love and loss, and if you're looking an angst-laden read, there's plenty of it in this well-written story to go around.
The movement between Shelby and Gray's past and present gave us the chance to see both the issues facing them in their early, budding relationship as well as the issues and heartbreak facing them in the present. It all rang true for this reader--it was the cause of more than a few tears, and waiting and hoping for Shelby and Gray's HEA ending was the reason I couldn't put this book down. It was, quite simply, everything I could possibly want in a romance novel and I absolutely loved it.
As stated, I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions stated are my own.
"Nobody thought Viola Thatcher would expire, if for no reason than sheer stubbornness."
Shelby Thatcher's gram is dead. Viola is the one who kept the family in contact even if they were estranged. Once her will is read, Shelby discovers that her gram left 51 percent of her Bookshop to her and 49 percent to her ex Grayson Briggs.
This story was lovely, and I enjoyed Shelby's character. Gray really tries to redeem himself after what he did to her in the past. I enjoy stories about second chances and redemption.
Thank you, Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction, for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.
When I start a book by this author, I find myself falling headfirst into the story within the first 5 to 10 pages, and this book was no exception as I became completely invested in this story and these characters.
Shelby Thatcher has worked in her grandmother's bookshop for many years. Her Gram has now passed, and she is surprised to learn that she is not the sole owner of the bookshop. The other owner is Gray Briggs. The man (or boy at the time) that broke her heart. It seems that Gram is playing matchmaker from the grave.
Gray Briggs has never had it easy in his life. The people of Granville never treated Gray right, even when he was a teenager. I felt such empathy for Gray as I learned more and more about his story. I actually got more than a little angry. I understood Shelby's anger and pain from what she felt was a betrayal, but I also wondered why she could not understand why he did what he did. This was more than a sticks and stones story. Gray went through a lot of pain.
I always say that everyone deserves a second chance, and Gray is definitely due one. Gray and Shelby's romance deserved a second chance as well, but things are not going to be easy. Actually enemies to lovers might be a better description of the relationship between Gray and Shelby, but I still believe second chance played a big part as well.
Family tension, community drama and financial surprises all play a big part in this story, but forgiveness is the biggest part of this story, although it takes some time to get there. The author brings the whole picture together as you are taken from 11 years ago to the present so you can more fully understand the characters and their motivations.
I felt complete satisfaction with the way this book wrapped up.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Shelby Thatcher and Gray Briggs lived in Grandville,North Carolina for their entire life. She worked at her grandmother’s book store most of her life, helping in one way or another until becoming a teenager. At that point she stocked shelves, sold books and helped her gran. Whenever she was out of school Shelby was kind, helpful and pleasant to all. Gray lived with his parents until his mother left them. His father got into an argument one day and shot the man. He ended up in prison and at this point Gray went to live with his grandmother. Somehow he became the problem with many of the townsfolk. He had no part in the offense but people needed to shed blame on the family and Gray was the only one left. Throughout high school Shelby and Gray were friends, then partners. He was working hard to receive a scholarship so he could attend college. When he was made the offender of a scandal so another could win, he joined the army. Leaving Shelby alone and heartbroken.
The Second Story Bookshop will be published on October 07, 2025 by Thomas Nelson. I was able to read Hunter’s latest novel via NetGalley.
Since college Shelby was thrilled to help her Gran run the bookshop. It took time to get over Gray. She rarely dated but when she did no one seemed to compare to him. After her Gran’s passing she kept it together until the funeral and the reading of the will. This story was heartwarming yet sad. Another pleasant tale by Denise Hunter. Reading is uplifting and touching. Hoping for another in this series.

The Second Story Bookshop is everything I want in a cozy romance—warm, heartfelt, and full of bookish charm. Shelby and Gray’s story had me smiling, swooning, and tearing up in equal measure. The small-town setting, complete with lakeside views, community drama, and of course the bookshop itself, felt like the perfect escape.
I adored the second-chance, enemies-to-lovers dynamic here. Shelby and Gray’s chemistry leaps off the page, and watching them navigate old wounds while being forced to work together was both emotional and rewarding. Gram’s legacy—and her beyond-the-grave matchmaking—added such a touching layer to the story, making it about more than just romance, but also about family, forgiveness, and home.
This book is brimming with fall vibes, Southern charm, and the kind of heartwarming storytelling that makes you want to curl up with a blanket, a latte, and never leave the fictional world. Fans of Debbie Macomber, Gilmore Girls, and anyone who dreams of owning a bookstore will fall in love with Shelby and Gray’s journey.
An absolute delight—I didn’t want it to end.
Denise Have enter deals with sensitive subjects with grace and humility. This story did not disappoint. A town blamed a young boy for the sin of his father. This continued through high school, forcing him to leave. Not only did he leave he only family he had but the love of his life. When he's given a second chance at returning and helping his first love, he doesn't hesitate.
After a series of unfortunate events, where he continues to prove himself to the town the unthinkable happens. He decides to leave for the safety of himself and those who love and support him. A miracle occurs and the town surprises him once again.
Such a wonderful standalone story that I highly recommend. I enjoyed the mention of Riverbend Gap, another of Denise Hunters book series, Although I received a free ARC from Net Galley and the publisher, all thoughts and opinions are the honest trutg.

Why would Gray be at the reading of Gram's will?
Gray was Shelby's long-departed boyfriend and the pariah of the small town.
He said he was here because the attorney invited him, and everyone found out why.
Gray had inherited 49% of the bookshop. How can that be?
Shelby made Gray sign a form that had him giving up his share and giving her full ownership.
She did agree to allow Gray stay on to check the books, and he finds finds that the bookshop is in deep debt.
Gray offers to help her get the bookstore profitable and out of debt with some changes, but how will that work out since they both still have feelings for each other after all these years?
We get to go back to their teenage years to see how everything played out, and to present day as the town still doesn't want Gray there and neither does Shelby.
See what happens in this sweet, emotional read about books, forgiving, and relationships.
I enjoyed my first read by this author. 5/5
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of the book. All opinions are my own.
I love the way Denise Hunter weaves a story together and I really enjoyed reading The Second Story Bookshop. Shelby and Gray’s love story was a wholesome second chance romance with so much heart and healing. I could not put it down and finished reading it in one day. Having lost my grandmother a few years ago, I related to the grief and loss depicted in this book and I was all in my feels while reading it. One of the things I loved was how even though Gram was no longer here, she was still meddling in her granddaughters life, which wouldn’t have been necessary if Shelby wasn’t so stubborn. 🤪 I also have a love hate relationship with books set in small towns. Love when they rally around the townspeople (Shelby), hate when people are judged for something they didn’t do, had no control over, and made me feel so bad for them (Grayson). This book had a little bit of everything and I really enjoyed reading this book.
I was given an advanced copy of this book. All opinions expressed above are my own.
All the stars. I absolutely loved this book. First of all, it happens in a bookstore! My favorite books are bookish books! The character development was also very well done, and without giving anything away, the end was exactly what was needed. I breathed a sigh of relief as I had been on pins and needles waiting for the other shoe to drop. Thanks to Denise Hunter for writing this beautifully fun book while also tackling issues of bullying, running away, and extreme loss. It was so well done. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.

What a wonderful feel-good story with the trope of second chance at romance being the center of an engaging and entertaining read! Shelby inherits her grandmother’s bookstore, but what surprises her is that she is expected to share it with her old flame from high school, Gray Briggs. The story is somewhat predictable, but the plot twists that the author included are delightful, romantic and at times humorous as Gray and Shelby work together to make Gram’s bookstore financially solvent. I loved the relatable characters and the sparkling, just under the surface love story that began to bloom as the two are forced to work together. I thought that the characters were realistic and enjoyed getting to know them. Mostly, I was really absorbed in their story and how the author was going to work everything out since they were both so different, with different lives and goals after years of separation. This is a light-hearted story that begins somberly with the death of Shelby’s grandmother and then flows quickly and smoothly into the current predicament of Shelby and Gray and how they both need each other but don’t know it yet. What a heart-warming and wholesomely beautiful story that the author has shared for the enjoyment of her readers! This book offers the themes of hope, forgiveness and moving forward instead of looking back.

The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter is the perfect cozy fall romance. Heartwarming, tender, and brimming with small-town charm. This story beautifully captures themes of hope, forgiveness, and second chances while reminding readers that sometimes love deserves another try.
The story follows Shelby Thatcher, who inherits her grandmother’s beloved bookstore. What she doesn’t expect is to share ownership with her high school sweetheart, Grayson Briggs, the very man who broke her heart years ago. As Shelby and Gray work together to save the failing shop, old emotions resurface, long-buried wounds reopen, and the possibility of rekindled love begins to bloom.
Denise Hunter weaves an engaging story full of emotional depth, gentle humor, and delightful plot twists. The dual timeline adds richness to the narrative, allowing readers to see both the innocence of young love and the maturity that comes with second chances. The characters feel authentic—relatable, flawed, and easy to root for. Gray’s troubled past, shaped by the town’s judgment and his family’s hardships, contrasts beautifully with Shelby’s warmth and resilience, creating a dynamic that feels both genuine and deeply moving.
While the story begins somberly with the loss of Shelby’s grandmother, it quickly transitions into a heartwarming exploration of healing, love, and new beginnings. Hunter’s writing flows effortlessly, balancing poignant emotion with the cozy charm of small-town life.
This is a clean, wholesome romance that feels like wrapping up in a soft blanket on a crisp autumn day. Whether reading or listening to the excellent audiobook narration, The Second Story Bookshop is an engaging and emotionally satisfying read that will stay with you long after the final page.
I enjoyed reading The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter. You will fall in love with all the characters. I received an ARC of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and given freely. Happy Reading!
I loved it so much! It’s such a cozy and heartwarming read 🍂
This is a second chance romance — usually my least favorite trope — but honestly, I adored this story and all the depth behind it. I found myself connecting with Shelby’s journey and really appreciating how this wasn’t just a second chance in love, but also in life and justice.
Shelby has to face Gray again, the man who once left both her and their small town behind. Their reunion isn’t just about rekindling old feelings, but about healing, growth, and finding closure in unexpected ways.
I also loved the side characters and their storylines; they added so much charm and warmth. The setting is beautifully written — it truly makes you feel like you’re walking through a cozy small town and bookstore.
Since I’m currently working at a bookstore, I especially appreciated all the little details and references about running one — they felt so authentic and special 💕
I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a calm, comforting read. If you enjoy Gilmore Girls vibes — small town charm, heartfelt connections, and second chances — this is definitely for you!

Shelby struggles after her beloved grandmother's death, but things only get worse when the will is read and she learns that, instead of whole owner of her Gram's bookshop, she's getting only 51% - with the other owner to be the man who broke her heart years earlier when he left town. It's a relief when Gray agrees to help her get set up and then sign the rest back to her, but everything goes sideways when they discover the bookstore to be deep in debt. Gray knows Gram hoped they would get back together, but Shelby clearly doesn't trust him an inch. And anyway, the town hates him - always has - and he's eager to leave, except for Shelby. But getting the store back on its feet will take time, and be another chance to make things right with her - if he can only convince the town he's not a threat...
A heartwarming story of second chances - though I'd have to say people's treatment of Gray infuriated me. However, I guess the flip side of that is the way he put up with it rather than trying to fight back, live up to their bad ideas or get revenge - so that's an inspiring reminder of the sort of attitude we should have. Fortunately, Gram was a great exception to the 'everyone hates him' rule, and she's been on his side throughout and is now working to fix things even from the grave. The result is an inspiring read, with characters I enjoyed getting to know, somewhat of a redemption arc (even if Shelby does finally acknowledge the problem wasn't entirely one-sided) and a particularly satisfying ending. Recommended.

I’m anxious to share with you The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter. I have enjoyed every book I read by her and this one wasn’t any different. She writes clean and interesting romance books. I know that I am going to be entertained when I pick up one of her books. I hope you will be too.
This book is about a Bookshop and those of us who love books are often drawn to a good story about a book store. I don’t know about you but if there is a library or book store mentioned in the title, I always take a look and most often it goes on my want to read list. I couldn’t resist this one because it was also by Denise Hunter. I didn’t even read the synopsis.
This bookshop was owned by Shelby Thatcher’s Gram who has just passed away. Gram is doing a little matchmaking from the other side. She has left 49% of the shop to Gray Briggs who is Shelby’s ex who broke her heart. She promised herself she would never speak to him again. Now, they have to work together because Shelby does not want to lose her Gram’s shop. This is just scratching the surface of the story. There is so much more going on. Once you open this book, you will be hooked and will not be able to walk away from it.
I love small towns for all the good and the bad. There is definitely some bad going on in this town and it will make you mad. You will probably be rooting for Gray but like me be wondering how in the world this will all work out. Love often will find a way. I just wasn’t sure how.
I loved the characters in this book. They are the kind of people you would want in your own family or circle of friends. I was sad that Gram was gone, but she made her voice heard throughout the book. Shelby’s dad and brother were good guys who butted heads for years. A lot of wrongs were righted in this book and peace was brought for some. I will let you read it to know exactly who, what, when, where and why. It is so worth it!
If you love a good family story and one that takes place around a Bookshop, then this might just be the book you need to read on your next free weekend. I think The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter definitely deserves a top spot on your nightstand.
Until next time…Happy Reading!

Denise Hunter...OMG!!!! I loved this novel.
"She inherits the bookshop of her dreams . . . But she has to run it with the ex she vowed never to speak with again."
I was hooked from the beginning to the end of this novel. I was overly emotional at times while reading this ARC copy from NetGalley. I was not a fan of the injustice that happened alot in this small town. Sometimes I just wanted to cry for Gray. There was a lot of heart between the main characters, Shelby and Gray, even when the POV was focused on their teenage romance. I didn't like that her brother was so overly protective of her, not only when it came to the bookshop but also when it came to Gray. I understood it when they were teenagers, but it was like wanting to throw a book at his head...like she is an adult now, let her be.
What happens when your long-lost ex returns and you finally have a chance to get closer? Love Returns? More Heartache?
The end was fabulous. I want to read more novels by Denise Hunter....I think my favorite was that she had arguments between Shelby and her Grams at times, even if it was all in her mind.
Truly a must-read.

The Second Story Bookshop is another well written tale by Denise Hunter. Bookshop owner Viola Thatcher, although in her later eighties, passed away unexpectedly. Also unexpected was the formal reading of Viola’s will when it should have been straight forward, leaving her estate to her son Stanley. When her granddaughter Shelby’s high school sweetheart Grayson Briggs arrives for the reading the family cannot fathom why. When his first mention is to bequeath his Grandma Dorothy’s jewelry that had been left to Viola when Dorothy had passed, they understood. It was Gray’s second mention that caused the Thatcher family to balk when Gramma Viola left him 49% ownership of the bookshop.
Gray’s youth had been troubled, bringing him to live with his grandmother when his father was sent to prison. To help out her friend, Viola had hired Gray to landscape and maintain the little yard around the bookshop putting Shelby in close contact since she worked in the shop. After much drama in their senior year, Gray left town and left Shelby broken hearted. Gray’s reappearance in Granville brings back many negative feelings in town, both to the Thatchers and to other residents.
This is such a well woven plot line including strands within the Thatcher family, strands of Gray’s interactions with Shelby and her family, and strands with townspeople, blending these strands perfectly! With moments of suspense and tension coupled with memories and promise, this story has it all! I very much enjoyed this book and I do recommend it!

Wow what an amazing story of second chances in life and love and the power of forgiveness. It was such a beautiful written story which highlighted how one person's actions and people's gossip can affect the innocent. Gray was made out to be the bad boy was an outcast because of the actions of others and that shaped his life and cost him Shelby the love of his life. Until Shelbys grandma decided to do some meddling. I loved the setting of the bookshop and how Shelby and Gray learned to trust each other again and love again. The ending was brilliant and justice and truth won out and love triumphed. I would love this to turn into a series. Thank you to Denise Hunter and Netgalley for an ARC copy to honestly review all opinions are my own.

I liked this novel and particularly liked Gray Briggs, the hero. If ever there was a character that had my sympathy for the entire book, Gray is the character. His story is one of overcoming, and wow, he had a lot to overcome. The heroine, Shelby Thatcher, was a good person forced to work with the guy who broke her heart. I could understand her reluctance to be around Gray, and I felt her angst as she faced the possibility she would lose the bookshop. No one wants to see the thing they love die. Hunter’s writing is superb as always, and she’s created an engaging story. If you like underdog stories, you’ll like this one. Gray’s experiences really hit me, and I couldn’t shake the sadness I felt for him even though there was a happily ever-after. This story has stayed with me, which makes it worth reading.

This is actually the first book, I have read by Denise Hunter. I have a few of her other ones on my to be read list. I really enjoyed this book. It was heartwarming and romantic. I love Second chances romances. I loved the name Gray gave his dog. I was actually a little bummed when the book ended, because I wanted to see how the characters are doing. It was that good. The Second Story Bookshop is classic Denise Hunter. If you’re a fan of Denise then go ahead and grab this book. The book grabbed me from the first page and I finished it in a couple days. I loved the bookshop setting and all the clever names for each customer.
What I enjoyed the most about this book was getting to see both main character perspectives, which is a must in my opinion for this type of book.
Another biggie was the slow reveal to the history between Shelby and Gray. This helped the story progress and keeps you wanting more. Sometimes I would be thinking man, how can they overcome these odds, but in the end I loved the ending. Characters from Denise’s other books are mentioned also which makes me want to go back and read those books.

I loved this one so much! It’s perfect for the fall season. A beloved bookstore in a small town, good-intentioned meddling grannies, and the most heart-melting second chance love story.
I loved Shelby and Gray’s story. It’s kind of your ‘good girl meets bad boy’ trope, except Gray isn’t bad. Not by a long shot. The author crafted such a complex character that made me angry for him too! The way this town treats him is completely unfair and I definitely had a visceral reaction reading this 😅 I was rooting for him the entire time!
I liked the dual timelines of the story too. The chapters set in the past had such a cozy and nostalgic feeling to them, reading about a sweet high school romance beginning. In the present chapters, it was nice seeing how these characters matured. The quote I shared in the third slide reflects this. When I heard this line in the audiobook, I was awestruck. I feel like this quote represents a lot of the book. And I love how it reflects the fall season as well, and that the book takes place in this season too. Time passes and leaves may change colors, but the core of who you are is always rooted in yourself. Shelby seeing the core of who Gray was from the beginning was such a beautiful love story to read.
I also really loved the audiobook narrator in this one! I was so impressed by their performance 🤩 The differences in tone for each character was uncanny. @kimchurchill1 did an amazing job! I’m going to have to look into listening to more audiobooks by this narrator.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND listening to this audiobook while taking a walk amongst some fall foliage🍂 It’s such a comforting and heartfelt read 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much to for a chance to listen to this ALC and ARC. I did get an ARC too, but I couldn’t stop listening to the ALC, it was so good!
The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter is a heartwarming story filled with characters you can’t help but fall in love with. When Shelby’s grandmother leaves half ownership of her beloved bookstore to Gray Briggs—the man who broke Shelby’s heart years ago—old emotions quickly resurface. Though Gray intends to sign over his share, unforeseen complications force them to work together, rekindling memories and stirring feelings neither expected to face again.
The chemistry between Shelby and Gray is undeniable, and the flashbacks to their youth beautifully reveal the depth of their shared past. Hunter masterfully weaves together the relationships within the Thatcher family, Gray’s connection to Shelby, and the charming small-town dynamics into one seamless, emotionally satisfying story.

As always, Denise Hunter is a resounding delight to read. This sweet romance is full of redemption, featuring second chances not only in the personal lives of the characters, but also in long-lost love. I couldn't help but be swept away into the lives of Gray and Shelby as they struggled through the pages to uncover secrets of long-held grudges and move into a future together. What I thought:
What a fabulous fall read! The setting of the small town really made this book come off the pages for me, and really showed both the good and bad of a small town.
I of course loved the book centering around a bookshop being passed down to the FMC Shelby and the man her Gram knew would be her HEA, even though he broke her heart. I enjoyed how we got little glimpses of Gram in Shelby remembering little bits of their past conversations.
Grey is where you get a glimpse of how toxic a small town can be - he can’t escape his dad’s past mistakes and was bullied all through high school, which carries over into his return to town to help Shelby get the bookshop back on track.
The second chance romance here was done so well! It didn’t feel rushed and was such a sweet redemptive story of forgiveness.
Other little touches that I thought were great: the genres of books put next to a new characters name when introduced and how the bookshop got its name ♥️
Definitely recommend this book if you like:
- second chance romance
- Small town
- Slow burn
- Clean read
- Book about books
While The Second Story Bookshop is my first book by Denise Hunter, it definitely won’t be my last . The story focuses on the relationship between Shelby and Grayson. Shelby is beloved by the town and Grayson is bullied for mistakes he didn’t make. The story opens in the present, where Shelby has just lost her grandmother who she has helped run a family bookstore. Gray returns to the small town for the funeral and old feelings ignite. The book bounces between past and present which normally frustrates me but in this case it was seamless and thoughtfully written. It helped me to understand the dynamics in their relationship.
If you are a fan of second chances , forgiveness, small town romances, true love never ends , you will enjoy this book .

Shelby inherited her grandmother's bookshop, but there's a catch, her high school sweetheart inherited it, too. She makes a deal with him to get the business out of the red in exchange for his share, and he'll walk away, even though that defies Gram's wishes in her will.
Gray has always been misunderstood by the town, and he left after a series of wrongs against him. He keeps a low profile, and he honors his obligation. He finds a friend and adopts a stray dog. He's a good man and he always was.
Working together, Shelby realizes not everything was Gray's fault when they broke up, and he's the type of man she should want. They have feelings for each other, but he's leaving... There are those who want him out of town, and he's the target of some awful behavior which becomes more dangerous.
With the end of the year looming as the goal to get the business on track, Shelby and Gray are fighting the attraction--how can they be together when they live in different towns and have separate careers? With holiday magic and reminders from Gram, can they find a way toward love, save the bookshop, and will her family and the community finally discover what Shelby has known about Gray all along? A heartfelt and heartwarming story.
It wasn't hard to fall in love with Shelby and Gray in this heartwarming story that takes place in a small town bookstore! I loved it so much I did not want the story to end! Thank you to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for a chance to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review.

This second chance, enemies-to-lovers clean romance was so compelling that I pulled an all-nighter because I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. The characters were complex and likable and they dealt with some difficult personal pain that informed their actions toward one another. Shelby and Gray, the main characters, had such a strong connection that the reader could feel the attraction. I expected an HEA because of the genre of the book but I couldn’t figure out how the author was going to bring it about. I loved the satisfying resolution. Highest recommendation! I received a complimentary early copy from the publisher. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

THE SECOND STORY BOOKSHOP
BY: DENISE HUNTER
"A Good Novel Is Like A Vacation For the Mind."
I found this premise to be intriguing, and I have also read this AUTHOR'S, DENISE HUNTER'S prior books and loved them which just like this one turned out to be read by me when I needed a break from much heavier themed genres. I loved the dual time line and the atmosphere of the Fall season wasn't lost on me that this is due to publish at the perfect time that is represented in this novel. However, while I can't think of a reader who does it as often as I do, who wouldn't appreciate that the subject of a place like our favorite Bookstore where we can always find something to read, especially if it's family owned, makes this a welcome setting. Most readers that love to read would find that attribute very appealing. We know That one of the Main Character's who is the female protagonist is a granddaughter named Shelby Thatcher who has devoted her time helping her Grandmother make this a welcome desirable community BOOKSHOP where this reminded me of my favorite bookstore that, I still go to even though I mostly read on my Kindle. I'm a good friend with the owner, and his wife, since I've known them for over two decades. It's a well loved place where I enjoy Community events, where I attend because I find inspiration from the employees reviews. I also find books that aren't found at the bigger chain bookstores. Those aspects offer me a more comfortable opportunity to discover books that aren't featured in the bigger chain bookstores, which they probably are, but harder to find. In this story that is also a community respite where a granddaughter who worked with the owner, her Grandmother before she passed away had me comparing a family owned bookshop where I spent many years with fond memories of times I went there to find new titles, also to get a famous Author's Special Signed First Edition, where we went and had to take our children, who are now grown up, but this was nostalgic since while reading I compared this title, "THE SECOND STORY BOOKSHOP," to a love of the Main Female Character named, Shelby had for the chance to inherit a well loved setting, which features the small town's Independent bookstore. It had been bought by Shelby's Grandmother when she was just twelve years old. I couldn't help but compare it to our family trips with the same magnetic pull where I remembered the same love of our whole family which I remembered us going together, which were wonderful memories evoked by which made me smile while reading this. It's something that we all had fun, and my kids were young, which I hadn't thought about in quite some time, but reminds me how fast time flies, since they were young at the time, but when they were older, and had their own routines they were not too young anymore when they went everywhere we went. Now that my kids are both out of our home as they are grown, the long ago memories surfaced of my children when they were young picking out certain titles that my eldest son still held onto, which I read the Series he loved, and I could understand why he kept the particular Series which was recent. It was a very wholesome collection, which was similar to this small Southern, town in a charming Lakeside, North Carolina community who mistreated Gray Briggs, which I felt bad for his having to deal with the issues that had nothing to due with him, from a small town that had less to do with him, but where this town that sounded so lovely, had made life intolerable for a young man, still in High School, so unfair, and made me feel sorry for him. High school is difficult enough, without the added burden that made such an Oasis sounding place to live, make me wonder about how narrow minded the townsfolk had to be to burden one of their own youths, enough for him to flee, leaving his girlfriend Shelby devastated, by him leaving the area with their romantic relationship tainted to the point of her never wanting to talk to him again. I've certainly made those same sentiments, when I was her age, and I felt that way in the moment, but never followed through, since I'm pretty forgiving even when I shouldn't be, since I've had my share of heart ache that I've always taken responsibility for things that weren't always all of my fault.
I love that when this publishes it is the same season featured in this novel. I also must add that this title "THE SECOND STORY BOOKSHOP." is perfect for the narrative. I loved that this was full of dialogue which are my favorite attributes when I read my favorite genre which this isn't it, but I was moved by the depth and emotional storytelling about a second chance love story. Shelby's and Gray's High school romance that left her heartbroken felt intimate when he leaves town and due to his father's misdeeds felt unfair to place the town's animosity on Gray since he left town because they misdirected their uncharitable treatment towards him. It made me think of this cliche that is not good form, but it's exactly what caused his leaving behind his romantic relationship with Shelby because the community in this insular town in Grandville, North Carolina blamed the "Sins of the father revisited on the son." I might not have wrote the exact cliche, but its reason is contained in the above sentence. When Shelby's beloved Grandmother left the Bookshop to both Shelby, and Gray, she did it with pure intentions even though it was not welcomed by Shelby. I understood why Shelby wasn't receptive to her Grandmother's provisions since anyone that's lived as long as I have has experienced the overwhelming pain of heartbreak that feels at the time like it is going to last a lifetime. As most of us know, that we are resilient and overtime we heal and move on. That's why Shelby and her family are so shocked that she has moved on and has a new boyfriend now, so they aren't happy about the fact that Gray has also inherited half of the Bookshop. When the will is read everyone assumed that her Grandmother would be leaving the bookstore to Shelby, but she left 51 percent to Shelby, and 49 percent to Gray, and I thought that the way most of these characters acted immature, and unlikable after eleven years since Gray left town, and for such a charming town, the characters took away the from the artistic setting rendering it not anyplace I would want to live. Despite the town's beautiful description, that sounds a lot like my childhood town by the quaintness, and charm, but the people except Gray, and Shelby's Sister in Law, were the only likable characters for at least the first 20% at least. Who holds a grudge eleven years after a romantic relationship ends regardless of heartbreak? I didn't like how Shelby or her brother acted about the Grandmother's reading of the will at the Lawyers office towards Gray, which I almost feel like deducting a star. Very immature, and entitled, and no matter how nice the town is, these characters were very unlikable, and were a huge turn off in my opinion. I'll say it again, because it was so unpleasant for at least the first twenty percent regardless of the picturesque setting, the way Shelby, and her brother acted towards Gray, made me think that I thought after eleven years after the fact of a High School romance ends, and you act so immature? I regretted this choice because I wasn't prepared for such unrealistic, and gross immaturity, and uncalled for mean spirited behavior towards Gray, and had to force myself to keep reading because i'm required to write a review. Which because there's much in this narrative that isn't exactly a unique, trope, and has been done more times than I can count. It isn't exactly innovative, but there's much to still enjoy that this novel offers to appreciate it since it may not be as new in this genre, but it is DENISE HUNTER'S signature feel good addition that's her's that she has written. The story delivers a familiar theme, but her originality lies in her ability to evoke a universal reading experience that I as the reader was able to relate to, and not to sound banal or trite, I love how it brought back long forgotten memories while reading that I treasure that made this memorable.
As Shelby works with Gray there's no denying how those significant romantic relationships that we all experienced that we bonded with can resurface regardless of whether we have thought we have made a conscious choice towards a different future. If we were attached towards a former love that we were impacted that we truly loved, even if we don't desire to revisit since we have new partners as Shelby has a new boyfriend. No matter how much we were hurt, we do not want to go through it again with someone who hurt us. If we have moved on, there's the subconscious that is in the drivers seat that if the conditions are not even possible, there is some love that might have changed but I know that there's also romantic love that under the right timing there's love that can last a lifetime. That no matter how much we fight it, even when we thought it was to be left in the past. Sometimes it only takes one person's efforts who can rekindle in us no matter how much we fight it. If we know it can't be. I know there's always one person that we have all encountered that we will always love no matter how we have thought it was not in our best interest, with enough effort from that former past romantic partner, I know there's always someone that we'll always love if that person says the right things no matter how we were heartbroken, and how much we resist it, there's a possibility that if we loved them deeply and it was significant, there's a good chance that we can be surprised how we can find ourselves awaken to love despite how we thought we didn't expect it. That's why these second chance romances are so common. I know that if the love was real, it sometimes is presented no matter how much we thought we were past it, only to find that we didn't choose to love that person who broke our heart say the right words, and we automatically, without intention find ourselves loving that person and trying to stop, but if that person says certain things or won't let go, we might not want to rekindle it, but find that there's no way we are going to take the risk again. We think we've talked ourselves out of it, only to find that when it comes to the heart, all the reasons why we know it's not good for us, and suddenly we're feeling love that we thought it best not to. I am probably repetitive so I'll say one last thing. Even when there's no future, the old romantic partner can influence us by not letting go, and saying things that awakens the spark, unless there's no contact. I think that I saw those same understated implied of Shelby's first spark between her heart beginning to thaw towards Gray, was when he was working at the bookstore helping out, and he selflessly signed over his inherited share of the bookshop which she had given him her prepared document. I could sense that such a kind gesture started to awaken something again in Shelby, which was minor, but stood out to me as significant. When Shelby's sister-in-law came to the bookshop, she picked up the chemistry between Shelby and Gray. I did end up liking Shelby the more that I read, but my first impression of her was less than admirable.
This was such a heartwarming reading experience, and I found Shelby's situation something that I've experienced at a much younger age so this story really was one that even though not exactly the same circumstances there was enough similarities to have me write much more than I planned. I don't typically read this genre, but as I've said I've read many of Denise Hunter's prior books to read this even though, it's not a favorite genre. I really think the Title is perfect, and the Bookshop is a bonus since I've been a life long reader. I'm so happy that I read this, and it brought back so many memories, that it's nostalgic and reflective. I look forward to whatever Denise Hunter writes next.
Some novels have a way of moving you, especially when you can remember yourself going through not the part about inheriting a Bookshop with your former High school. romantic partner, who left town leaving her heartbroken. Again, we all have experienced at least one relationship that left us heartbroken if we have the capacity to love. We all think it's devastating, but we all get through it. I'll be recommending this to all friends, and family who love to read.

Grayson broke Shelby’s heart when he left town without a word. Years later, he’s back. And now, thanks to her matchmaking grandmother’s will, he’s part owner of the bookstore Shelby inherited. Will Shelby dare to risk a second chance at romance as they fight to save the Second Story Bookshop? Can Grayson overcome his past? Or will their relationship again end up in the rejection pile?
I can’t resist a good “bookshop” story—and this one is fabulous! The characters are complex, the relationships tangled, and dialogue is wonderful. The unexpected twists kept me turning the pages and hoping for that happy ending even when it seemed hopeless.

ohh my goodness. This was my first Denise Hunter book but it absolutely won't be my last. It was so extremely good and I couldn't put it down. I completely devoured the book in one day and accidently ignored all the rest of my daily household chores to get it finished. The book was the perfect mix of romance and mystery which are my two favorite genres... AND it takes place in a bookstore.. so it was obvious from the beginning that I would love it.
Fans of Becky Wade, Karen Witmeyer, Pepper Basham and Karen Kinsbury will love Denise Hunter. Her newest book, The Second Story Bookshop promises to not disappoint. Set in Grandville, North Carolina, bibliphiles will not want to put this novel down. Readers will be drawn into the love story of Shelby Thatcher and Gray Briggs, learning that forgiveness and second chances are part of every great love story.

I really loved the emphasis on family and trust most in this one - the MCs were fiercely loyal to each other and there was a beautiful relationship they each had with their respective grandmas that definitely made me tear up a few times. Pick this one up now wherever you buy books!
I love a bookshop theme and a small town setting and this was such a fantastic read. A cosy, feel-good story with great characters. I was hooked from the start and couldn't put it down. It had the perfect combination of romance and mystery and I highly recommend it.

I will read anything Denise Hunter writes, I love her books! This was no different. The characters come to life and I’m so wrapped up in the stories, I have major book hangover every time!
Shelby loves working at her grandmother's small-town bookstore, but when her grandmother passes, Shelby is shocked to find that now she shares ownership with her old high school ex-boyfriend, Gray Briggs.
Engaging small-town second chance romance, with a dual-timeline story telling style that tells what happened in the past, and what is going on in the present. Great pacing, and familiar faces. I liked how Gray kept pushing and doing the right thing, even when everyone was against him. Shelby loves her bookshop and it was cool to see how she and her Gram shared so many memories inside the shop.
Heartwarming second chance romance, inspiring story of trusting God and doing the right thing no matter what. Great interaction, with 2 likable characters that you can cheer for throughout. Wonderful read all the way through!

This was such a sweet story. I loved the development of the second chance meeting and how both characters dealt with their past. I would recommend this book. I received a complimentary copy from NefGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A romance about the power of truth!
Hunter nails small town life in this new romance about a beloved bookstore. I felt sorry for Gray because people were so against him because of his father's background. Meanwhile Selby is trying to save her gram's store.
The characters are likable and relatable.
Ultimately this is a story about the power of love, truth, and second chances. The author handles these themes beautifully.

Denise Hunter sets this story in a small town where pasts are held against you but change can happen. Shelby and Gray's story is captivating and heartbreaking. Readers will love the family dynamic of the Thatcher family and will especially fall in love with two grandmothers who are integral to the story and the second story of their grandchildren.
Not very often do you get a second chance at life but Gray Briggs is looking at just that. He's been running away from the sins of his father and a town that punished a young boy for those sins but he's ready for his second story.
Shelby Thatcher is loving her job working in her Gram's bookshop and is stunned not only when she loses her Gram but also inherits the bookshop. She is dedicated to making it work and making it a success to honor her Gram. She's ready for her second story.
I received an ARC through NetGalley. The opinions stated are my own freely given.

Cozy and emotional! A sweet small town romance that ia ce teres around books is the main theme An enjoyable read. You find yourself rooting dor the love story entwined throughout.
Would it surprise anyone to know I dream of owning a bookstore? While it wasn’t Plan A for either Shelby or Gray, this bookstore (and their own story) turned chaos and pain into a beautiful disaster! An absolute heartwarmer!

"Nobody thought Viola Thatcher would ever expire, if for no other reason than sheer stubbornness" (location 72). This opening line drew me in. It also gave a hint to her character which gave credence to her meddling in her will, leaving 49% ownership to Shelby's long lost love, Gray, whom Viola had always liked. Even though it seemed terrible at the time, Gray convinces Shelby to let him help her get Gram's shop back on its feet.
I couldn't help but root for Gray from the start. It's sad to see someone so maligned for something they didn't do and had no control over. It was crazy to see the bullying continue into adulthood. This book kept me reading because I had to see how the seemingly insurmountable obstacles would be handled.
Books that have books or bookstores as the setting are always fun for booklovers. It's easy to see the displays in your mind and to smell the new book smell. Even though I read most of my books on Kindle now, it made me want to go find a small bookseller and enjoy the ambiance and buy a book.
This was an enjoyable read. I'd recommend it. Thank you to Thomas Nelson for providing me with a free e-copy. All opinions are my own.

Denise Hunter has done it again, this was an amazing story! The bookshop was so inviting it pulled me into the story from the very beginning. It's a heartwarming and clever storyline with fantastic characters that were so easy to relate to. Great character development as the book progressed. I loved how the story unfolded, so entertaining with a twist of suspense. Excellent writing! This is definitely a page turner that does not disappoint. I loved it!

The Second Story Bookshop: A delightful, sweet, second chance romance by Denise Hunter is an amazing sweet romance. Ms Hunter can be counted on to write excellent stories in each and every novel and this book is no exception. Here, the main characters had so many struggles they had gone through— from lies told about them and a scandal spread through the community. I loved how the Grandma’s will brought them together and I think even though it is a known trope, Ms Hunter did an amazing job telling this story in a sweet, not always expected way. I highly recommend this and any book by this author. I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
Loved Shelby and Gray's second chance romance!
This unexpected small town romance wrapped around my heart and squeezed tight, plunging me into its great depth of character and circumstance. It blitzed my emotions (particularly my "justice" button) and by the time we'd hit 90%, I wasn't sure if I'd survive the rest of the story, let alone the characters living it. Thank God for writers who know how to tie up loose ends with efficient swiftness! 😆
I really enjoyed Shelby and Gray's reconnection. Let me declare I was on Team Gray the entire time. While Shelby and her dad and brother annoyed me on and off, I was glad everyone gathered their perspective and yanked it into the correct lane.
Did I say how much I loved Gray? If you're a fan of wounded characters who keep fighting, this story is worth a read! It's got some *waggles brows* spiced kisses, swoony "you're such a thoughtful guy" moments and plenty of trauma to set up a mental health support hotline.
So good! Gray's reality living in his hometown sweetened the story in a blackened heart kind of way, ha ha, but it was just what was needed. I wanted him to win from the moment I heard Shelby groan and whine that he'd attended her gram's funeral. 😂
I should add I did like Shelby. I understood her perspective... I just wanted her to return to her kind-hearted ways sooner than she did.
Also, everyone needs a Liddy as a bestie. And baby snuggles. And a mangy dog to love. 😂
NB I received an ARC of this story.

The main theme of this book is second chances. The characters are likable, well most of the time, and the story moves along at a good pace. The romance is clean and not graphic at all. The story centers in a small town with all the trappings of a small town. It teaches us not to judge people by the family. We need to look at a person for who they are and not jump to conclusions. If you want to see bullies put in their place, this book is for you. God's grace is evident on so many levels. You know it will all turn out good, so you speed read to the end to see how it happens. This book should keep you thinking about how you see other people. The only problem I had with the book was the description of the bookshop. I thought it was confusing where the actual bookshop was in the old house. It seemed to me to be in the second story of the house, which would cut out a large part of the target customers.
Thank you to NetGalley for a free copy for an honest review.
I am always drawn to a book that is set in a bookshop. This time, it is Gram’s Second Story Bookshop. To overcome the grief of losing her husband, Gram opened this bookshop. She hoped it would be her “second story,” so she named it Second Story Bookshop.
When she passed away, her book-lover granddaughter Shelby and the former helper in the shop, Shelby’s ex-boyfriend Gray, inherited the bookshop together. This peculiar arrangement puzzled everyone, including Gray. They have to play along with this and figure out a way forward according to Gram’s design.
The main storyline is the romance between Shelby and Gray, but I can strongly feel the beautiful seeds of second chances planted throughout the book. The relationship between father and son, the community, Gray’s unjustly bad reputation in the past, the stray dog finding a new home, the bottlenecked artist becoming unblocked.
In real life, I love hanging around in bookshops. In my virtual life, it is the same. I simply savoured every moment I spent with Second Story Bookshop.
“You both deserve your second story.” The Second Story Bookshop by Denise Hunter
After reading this book, I am inspired to claim the second story of my own life, to say goodbye to the past that has too much to say in my present. Both past glory and past sorrow should not become the obstacles to the story that is yet to come.
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction and Denise Hunter for the eARC via @netgalley.
