Description

Never date your best friend

Always be original

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken.

Best friends Dave and Julia were determined to never be clichés so they even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they’d never, ever do in high school.

Some of the rules have been easy to follow; But Dave has a secret: he’s broken rule #8, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It’s either that or break rule #10, never date your best friend. Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember.

So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green.

It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens: Dave and Julia discover they’ve actually been missing out on high school

And maybe even on love.

Never, Always, Sometimes by Adi Alsaid Review

“Never, Always, Sometimes” is a fresh, pulsating tale of love and the unknown boundaries of friendship. It hits the core of reaching the cusp of adulthood and the fragility of youth. Dave and Julia are best friends and have created a “Never List” of things they said they would never do in high school. Towards the end of their final year in school they decide to attempt the list, and it is within this that the novel unfolds.

In Adi Alsaid’s debut novel Let’s Get Lost the story was based around a girl’s road trip and a tale of redemption. Whilst I enjoyed the novel, the main characters were dotted about a lot and we never spent quite enough time with any of the characters, however it’s the opposite in this novel. There are two main characters and the fact that we spend so much time with them is bold and makes the novel more enjoyable. It really illustrates the quality in the writing and it’s what makes it such an endearing novel. We quickly catch on to the smart wit and relationship that Dave and Julia have and it’s a joy to spend time with them together and apart, seeing their minds unravel.

Whilst superb writing, the last few YA books I have read have all been swimming in the depths of depression and the dark side of the moon, which is powerful but what is so refreshing about this novel is its fun. It is a recent trend within YA to have several layers of meanings and messages and this is not bad thing but this novel is something all readers can relate to, having a best friend and testing each other, pushing one another in new crazy ways, the ways best friendships do and it illuminates the novel and makes it so enjoyable.

This ultimately is a story about friendship, with every other component of being love struck teens, this will be warming the hearts of readers this summer.
