The Enduring Faith and Timeless Truths of Fulton Sheen

Fulton Sheen was an amazing man. He was brilliant, witty, a great priest, and a terrific evangelizer, perfect for the modern age. His books are wonderful. I know, I've read many of them.

The problem is that not only are there books, there's the TV show, homilies, articles and interviews. If you want a good sense of what Sheen thought and said that alot of reading.

Happily Zia has distilled this int9o a wonderfully easy-to-read book. Looking at nine subjects from timeless (our purpose in life), to current (divorce and marriage), the book organizes Sheen's thoughts on the subject with ample quotes.

Each chapter begins with an anecdote from Sheen's life. Then the basic teaching of the Church on this subject is put forth. This is done using ample quotes from the Catechism, the documents of Vatican II, and from recent popes. Following this is Sheen's on take on the subject, often bolstered with quotes from the previously mentioned sources.

The book also has a brief biographical essay in the beginning and an extensive bibliography of Sheen's writings at the end.

In a day when the Catholic Church often seems to be listening too much to the trends of modernity and doing too little to defend the Church from its incursions, Sheen's clear thinking, prophetic voice, and strong defense is just what we need.

This book shows that more than 35 years after his death, Sheen is as relevant as ever, if not more so.
