About the Book:
Bibb Country follows Lonnae O’Neal back in time as she pieces together generations of her family history against the sweep of American history, unearthing hidden triumphs, traumas, and a specialty strain of lettuce along the way.

Five years ago, Lonnae O’Neal grabbed some seeds for her backyard garden, including seeds for Bibb lettuce. She had no idea how deeply she’d wind up digging, or how far she would travel.

Lonnae’s fourth great-grandmother, Keziah, was enslaved by the Kentucky Bibb family, including John Bigger Bibb, who developed the Bibb lettuce strain, which remains a culinary darling more than 150 years later. John Bigger Bibb was executor of his father Major Richard Bibb’s will, which freed Keziah and dozens of other Black Bibbs decades before the Civil War, leaving them with a powerful, complicated legacy.

Major Bibb is widely believed to have fathered one of Keziah’s granddaughters. Another white Bibb, or Bibb-adjacent enslaver, whose identity is shrouded in mystery, fathered Keziah’s grandson, who is the beginning of the line for Lonnae.

Through historical records, genealogical science, oral histories, and interviews, Lonnae brings Bibb family stories (both Black and white) to life, and traces the legacy of the Black Bibbs’ migration from Kentucky to Southern Illinois, and beyond.

A mix of memoir, food history, and cultural critique, Bibb Country explores what it means to be descended, through enslavement, from a family whose wealth and power helped shape a nation, and confronts the history that echoes through one family’s generations, and, by extension, every generation of America.

This book club kit was well thought out and put together. It not only included thoughtful questions, but also activities, bookmarks, and recipes (food and drink) to make the book club meeting more of an event! I appreciated that it included information on the author, other books by her/the publisher, and suggestions for books to read if you enjoyed this one. This kit also included some ideas to link in a movie night, which I'm not sure I've seen in these kits before. This would be a great kit for someone wanting to change up a book club meeting.

In 2019, writer and journalist Lonnae O'Neal attended, and wrote about, a family reunion—one with a peculiarly American twist. The Bibb House reunion brought together descendants of slave owner Richard Bibb and the people he and his family enslaved. The experience culminated in Bibb Country, which O'Neal describes as part history book, part memoir, and part cultural critique.

The book club kit for Bibb Country was designed with the understanding that the reader, and book group, is wading into trauma-laden waters. It includes a riveting interview with O'Neal, who discusses how researching and writing about her ancestors helped her address her family's trauma history. And it's a lot. With that in mind, the kit includes a content warning, resources to support survivors, and discussion questions that dig deep. It also includes printable bookmarks and suggested recipes (Bibb salad, anyone?).

Bibb Country is a specifically American journey that will resonate with readers from all walks of life. In this time of multiple crises, O'Neal invites us to face our pasts so we can work towards a brighter future together. The Bibb Country book club kit makes that journey just a little easier by reminding us that we can face hard things when we do them with support, and in community. Highly recommend.

Many thanks to NetGalley and We Are Bookish for providing an ARC of the Bibb Country book club.
