Attorney Jack Patterson (first introduced in When Men Betray) has returned to Little Rock, AR. He's teaming up again with defense attorney Micki Lawrence, this time to defend Dr. Douglas Stewart, a distinguished chemistry professor who openly admits to cultivating marijuana on his property for research purposes. The big problem for Jack and Micki is that local prosecutor Dub Blanchard and a posse of federal agents seem to have more interest in the case than the situation warrants. Not only that, but they have also arranged to keep Dr. Stewart from meeting with his lawyers, thereby thwarting their efforts to mount his defense. Not only is author Hubbell—who was once mayor of Little Rock and chief justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court—no stranger to the Arkansas legal system but his own sensationalized involvement in the Whitewater scandal gives him a distinct view on the defendant's perspective. VERDICT For a solid introduction to the series' regular characters, prospective readers should be steered back to the preceding volume; for further insight into Hubbell's legal tribulations, recommend his memoir Friends in High Places.
