Oh my gosh, this is the cutest book ever! As a native Michigander I loved seeing the places the 12 Little Elves chose to visit. Vibrant illustrations, clever rhymes, and silly elves make this a perfect book for your early readers.
*12 Little Elves Visit Michigan* is a festive, rhyming adventure that follows twelve playful Christmas elves as they journey across the Great Lakes State to check on sleeping children before Santa arrives. Along the way, they explore iconic Michigan landmarks like Sleeping Bear Dunes, the Motown Museum, and Thunder Bay, all dressed in holiday cheer. This whimsical tour ends with a cozy visit to your own home, just in time for Christmas.
Trish Madson’s retelling of *The Night Before Christmas* is a heartwarming and regional twist on a holiday classic. The illustrations by Chorkung are bright, engaging, and full of playful details that young readers will love. Kids will delight in spotting the mischievous little elves as they make their way through Michigan’s most beloved sights, and adults will appreciate how the story celebrates connection and shared memories, especially for families who live far apart or have ties to the state. This would make a perfect holiday gift not just for children who live in Michigan, but also for those who’ve visited or have family there.
Thank you to NetGalley and Familius for an advance copy of this adorable book in exchange for an honest review.
As a native Michigander, I had to grab this one to check it out - I love when children's books use local points of reference to make things personal in a way to the child who may be reading it. There are a lot of great state locations highlighted in this book - some of them more recognizable than others - but all of them great examples of the variety of what can be found across the state.
The rhyming was well done - the first two pages felt a little choppy, but after that it seemed to flow really well with cadence and rhythm. I could see reading this to my children when they were younger and having natural places to engage and interact with them throughout the story. Overall a fun holiday children's story with a great local tie in.
What an adorable book for the little Michigander in your life! 12 little elves of all shapes and sizes head off on a tour around Michigan landmarks and attractions to see who's asleep on Christmas Eve night. They highlight the state tree and state bird, then visit places you've heard of (like Tahquamenon Falls and the Sleeping Bear Dunes), and places you might not have (Turnip Rock, the fairy doors of Ann Arbor). The attention to accurate detail is lovely, like the penguin exhibit at the Detroit Zoo and the Oscar Meyer Wienermobile at The Henry Ford.
The illustrations are brightly colored and whimsical, and the rhyming structure is sweetly reminiscent of Twas the Night Before Christmas. This cute and festive book would be perfect to read to little ones before bedtime on Christmas Eve!
A fun holiday book filled with elf shenanigans all while learning about the the great state of Michigan [yes I am biased. I am allowed. I lived/stayed there from the time I was 12 until I was 18 and love that state so much].
Littles will love this and its very colorful illustrations and depictions of all the cool places Michigan has to offer, and I am sure that it, along with the other elves book, will quickly become family favorites.
Thank you to NetGalley, Trish Madson, Chorkung [Sasiwimon Sunthonwikran] - Illustrator, and Familius for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
