Description

The bestselling author of Twenty Years Later and master of modern suspense is back with a brilliantly twisting, skillfully plotted thriller perfect for fans of Jeneva Rose and Colleen Hoover's Verity.

Alex Armstrong has changed everything about herself—her name, her appearance, her backstory. She's no longer the terrified teenager a rapt audience saw on television, emerging in handcuffs from the quiet suburban home the night her family was massacred. That girl, Alexandra Quinlan, nicknamed Empty Eyes by the media, was accused of the killings, fought to clear her name, and later took the stand during her highly publicized defamation lawsuit that captured the attention of the nation.

It's been ten years since, and Alex hasn't stopped searching for answers about the night her family was killed, even as she continues to hide her real identity from true crime fanatics and grasping reporters still desperate to locate her. As a legal investigator, she works tirelessly to secure justice for others, too. People like Matthew Claymore, who's under suspicion in the disappearance of his girlfriend, a student journalist named Laura McAllister.

Laura was about to break a major story about rape and cover-ups on her college campus. Alex believes Matthew is innocent, and unearths stunning revelations about the university's faculty, fraternity members, and powerful parents willing to do anything to protect their children.

Most shocking of all—as Alex digs into Laura's disappearance, she realizes there are unexpected connections to the murder of her own family. For as different as the crimes may seem, they each hinge on one sinister truth: no one is quite who they seem to be...

Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

Performed by Eva Wilhelm, Amanda Forstrom, Richard Rohan, Nanette Savard, Natalie Van Sistine, Jessica Threet, Chris Stinson, Sam Intrater, Nathaniel Priestley, Jenna Sharpe, Jonathan Sleep, Terence Aselford, Wayne LeGette, Niusha Nawab, Su Ling Chan, Stephon Walker, Jonathon Church, Stewart Crank, Christopher Walker, Laura C. This was such a fantastic read/audiobook! First of all, this was perfect for a dramatized adaption.....it was very well done. It was realistic and not over done with the dramatics. The narrator did a fabulous job and it made it so easy to just listen to the book and finish it it one day. This book had me hooked from the beginning and my attention never wained. I was immediately drawn into Alex's story and was rooting for her the whole entire time. This storyline was packed full of suspense and twists and the author did a wonderful job in interweaving it all. I would love to see a series based on Alex and her investigative skills...I would totally read that. This is my first book by this author and I have already downloaded another one of his books. I rated this a 5 star book on my Goodreads and my other socials and have already recommended to fellow suspense book lovers.

I’m a huge Charlie Donlea fan and Those Empty Eyes lived up to all my expectations and then some. Alexandra is the only surviving member of a gruesome murder that claimed her parents and her younger brother. The police immediately assume that she’s guilty when they find her at the crime scene holding a gun with a vacant look in her eyes. Alex is ultimately proven innocent but has to reinvent herself - piercings, blue contacts and all- to avoid the media scrutiny that follows her everywhere. She never gives up on finding the truth about that horrible night but the obstacles in her path are almost insurmountable.

I’ve never listened to an audio quite like this before and it was phenomenal. Complete with sound effects galore and a full cast of characters, this story played out in my mind in full detail. Thank you to NetGalley for this unforgettable ARC of Those Empty Eyes.

This was my first graphic audio, and it was fantastic! Charlie Donlea is a skilled storyteller. The novel has a multi-layered storyline that alternates between past and present.
In 2013, Alex, a teenager, was accused of killing her family but was acquitted. Ten years later, she works hard to find the real killer. She is a remarkable character and I was engaged in her journey throughout.
The supporting characters are well-developed and the complex plot kept my interest. The narration and sound effects enhanced the experience.
The ending was a total shock! It blew my mind. 🤯
I would like to thank the publisher and author for providing a complimentary advanced copy. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I had previously read this book and loved it but the Dramatized Adaptation just made it so much better! I am a somewhat new reader of Charlie Donlea but he is quickly becoming a favorite author.

"Those Empty Eyes" keeps you on the edge of your seat and constantly guessing. Alex has been trying to solve the mystery of who killed her family while at the same time trying to stay out of the spotlight. She has changed as much about herself as she can to keep hidden. Once being falsely accused of murdering her family, she has grown and now makes it her career to help others who have been falsely accused.

Alex comes across a student reporter who shares that she is on the verge of breaking a big story about cover-ups and sexual assaults among the college. The student is soon missing. As Alex tries to help solve this case, she finds that she may be closer to finding answers to her own family tragedy than she thought.

Thank you Netgalley, Charlie Donlea, and RBmedia for the chance to get an advanced copy of "Those Empty Eyes" Dramatized Adaptation audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Those Empty Eyes
Charlie Donlea

This was captivating and with plenty of characters and plotlines running concurrently. It was action packed and suspenseful.

“Because we all know in the news media, if it bleeds, it leads. We also know that the 24 hour news cycle is quick to cast judgement and slow to repent.”

The audio book was wonderful and the narrator did a great job. She was enticing and propelled the plot forward, keeping the tension and suspense up at all times.
