Description

Winner of 2024 IPPY Award for Multicultural Fiction, My Friend from Raffles City is a heart-stirring, sharply funny novel about love, loneliness, and the secrets that bind us.

Lindsay Trapp, a promising scientist from Iowa, expected adventure when she moved to Singapore—not isolation, culture shock, and five months of friendless drifting. Living with a dysfunctional family doesn’t help. Just when she’s ready to give up hope for connection, a mysterious psychic comes along, offering her friendship—and a love potion that promises to change everything.

Soon, a man of incredible fame and charm swoops into Lindsay’s life. An improbable romance, yet magically perfect. But there’s a catch: the psychic friend has a secret Lindsay has promised to keep. A secret that could destroy the family she lives with.

As Lindsay navigates life as a minority in a foreign land, she faces an impossible decision: hold on to her newfound love, or risk everything to prevent a family tragedy.

Perfect for fans of contemporary fiction with a twist of magical realism, rich cultural settings, and emotionally complex choices.

Advance Praise

"I find myself transported to every scene in Singapore while the multi-dimensional characters are flying off the pages. Every parent who has high hopes for their children should read this book. This one is a winner!"

—Carolyn Holt, veteran educator

"A cozy read with a cup of tea - this charming novel offers a taste of Singaporean culture through the lens of an American woman scientist. Dabbling with intersections of fantasy and realism, the story is tempered with quirky romance along with playful elements of mystery and intrigue. Readers are offered a birds eye view into the unpredictable dynamics of family, the insecurities of individuals and the spirit of community."

—Judy Osborne, DEI coach

"The blend of romance, isolation, and slow torture of indecision on Lindsay's part was such a thrill to read! The characters feel well-developed and while not always entirely likeable, they feel realistic which is infinitely more appealing. I loved the ending and the roller coaster ride we took to get there."

this book had a bit of everything in it and it really took me into its world and kept me there. and i was happy to do so.
the setting took me somewhere different and i really liked that. i felt like i got such a sense of the place.
it felt like it was such a heart felt story and the elements all tied together.
Lindsay is settling into a new life in Singapore. there she meets Phaibun who's an interesting character and that side of the story added some great depths and layers to the book. but layers that surely will tug a t your heart and send you for a ride.
it was such a unique read for me and i cant really go into it without giving major spoilers. and im not doing a very good job of describing it without doing so!
i also felt like learnt something of the culture and small ways we assume we know of it and actually do not. but it did so with tact and kindness to us readers. the friendship between our pair was unlikely but also seemed to fit in some weird and wonderful ways. but also it seemed not good for the other all at the same time.
they both had key parts to play in this game and i was never sure who side i was on if even there was one? it was a great thought provider for what friendship is and the balance between two friends even when we dont agree with what the other is doing at certain points.
overall this was a good story to be involved with and i have done a lacking job of putting that in this review.

I love that this book gives you realism and also fantasy and her being in Singapore made it seem like I was there too so informative and imaginative. I loved that escapism that it provided me!
