Description

A USA Today Bestseller!

“Though aimed at young readers, we think it also works as a great collector’s item for all ages — a keepsake to remember this moment in history (even if you’re just watching from afar, in some place like Wisconsin).”—Rolling Stone

“...promises to be cute.”—The Cut (New York Magazine)

This love letter to New York City shows New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani walking through all five boroughs and celebrating the people and places that make it great.

Zohran Mamdani has walked through the streets of New York City since he was a child, and at every crosswalk, there’s something new to celebrate. From a Mets game at Citi Field to a polar bear plunge at Coney Island, the city is filled with adventures waiting to be had. This joyful picture book for ages 4–8 is inspired by his noted thirteen-mile mayoral campaign walk.

"This playful picture book debut from Von Platen takes inspiration from the 13-mile summer 2025 Manhattan campaign walk of mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. As thin-lined, bold-hued illustrations nod to the look of Mamdani’s much-buzzed-about political poster design—a palette that draws from New York City’s visual culture of bodega signs and yellow cabs—the subject affably strolls, cheers, and occasionally boogies through the city, wearing the same slightly rumpled black suit, blue tie, and blue sneakers. Minimalist text refers warmly to 'Zohran’s city' ('In Zohran’s city, there are new things to do at every crosswalk'), but what emerges in this fond portrait is a bustling metropolis that belongs to all. There, 'everyone is always on the move' (Mamdani greets folks beneath an elevated train), but it’s also okay to 'slow down and listen' (he sits on a park bench, sipping from the classic New York coffee cup). Even readers beyond the five boroughs will recognize the figure as someone who loves where he lives and believes that every interaction matters."—Publishers Weekly

This was very sweet and cute. While inspired by Zohran's canvassing, it really is a story about being part of NYC. It was simple and sweet and very visually stimulating for kids!

This adorable picture book is as charming as Mamdami himself. He makes his way through the city, interacting with the people, and really noticing how amazing everything is. The pictures are bright and detailed enough that they feel full of life. At the end, there is a list of the places and how they are personal to him, and I learned some interesting facts.

I was so excited to see this book because I think Mamdani is a pretty cool dude. My little brother lives in NYC and called me after the primary to talk about how uplifting his voting experience was with a line of people at the poll before it opened because they were all so excited to cast their votes for Zohran.

This book is an adorable picture book that functions as a love letter to NYC. The words are simple, yet they highlight the work that Mamdani put into his campaign, as well as his attachment to the city.

It just so happens that my brother is visiting, so we read this together. Having only been to New York twice, I was not able to recognize all the sights, but he was pointing out the various scenes.

I would recommend this to families and libraries in NYC, as it will resonate best with them.

Thank you to Net Galley, Astra Publishing House, and Calkins Creek for the ARC. All opinions are mine or my brother's.

I give all the stars for the fun, colorful, informative story/picture of some great features of NYC! The text is very simple, yet tells so much! The art work is brightly colored, also simple yet quite detailed. This would be a fun picture book highlighting NYC to share with a little kid (& adults will like it too!) I liked the last page that told a little more about some details noted in the pages. I've seen this described as a 'love letter to NYC'.....& I could agree with that statement. It's a real good offering!
I received an e ARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley giving me an opportunity to read it & offer my own fair/honest review.

Zohran Walks New York was a joy to read! The illustrations are charming and adorable, and the book centers on Zohran’s 13 mile walk through NYC as a part of his campaign. It highlights important places in NYC. It’s so cute and fun! Definitely recommend for a children’s book with a cute concept and adorable illustrations.

This was such a wonderful and sweet children’s book. I loved how vibrant each scene was and how it incorporated things important from his life in some way with all the little Easter eggs. If you’re a NYer it’s a cute way to introduce kids to some special places and things in the city; if you’re not a NYer it’s probably even more special. I also appreciated how culturally diverse all the characters were.

A brilliant little book. The illustrations are adorable but also so detailed, even the little aspects make it. A cute overview of this candidate! Very heartwarming, honestly, even as a non-New Yorker.

The artwork of this children's book immediately drew me in with its vibrant colors, simple style, and rich detail that perfectly captures the spirit of New York City.
The story follows Zohran, who is running for mayor, as he walks through all five boroughs of the city that has shaped him. He came to the Upper West Side at the age of seven and now lives in the diverse neighborhood of Astoria, Queens. Zohran’s journey highlighting its neighborhoods, people, and energy in an accessible and heartfelt way.
What impressed me most is how the book combines simplicity with depth. In just a few words and images, it conveys Zohran’s deep connection to New York and reflects its diversity .

As someone who grew up in NYC I love this! When Zohran's campaign really started to kick up in New York I got super interested in it and was so incredibly elated when he won the primary. I think he is an inspiration for politics moving forward. This story is written as his love note to New York City. He walks around New York and talks about all the great parts of it. The author uses actual events in his life to tell the story. I loved the fact the author included the famous wedding picture of Zohran and his wife on the subway. The illustrations are adorable and any kid would love this. It really felt like NYC.

My husband was a New Yorker. He still told stories about when he lived there. Though this book is about a mayor candidate, Zohran Mamdani, but for my husband, this book was also like a throwback for him with his favorite New York iconic spots. He read this book to our son with his own stories about each place mentioned. We, as a family, enjoyed this book so much. We described Zohran Mamdani as a friendly guide of New York, so our son could enjoy the book better. As Muslims, we were also so happy with so many Muslim representations in this book. It was good that we could educate our son more about halal food since the US is not like Indonesia where we could easily find halal food and halal-certified food is everywhere. So even though this book might be the campaign media for Zohran Mamdani to promote himself to win the mayoral election, for us, we took a different turn and made this book an educational book to introduce our son to how New York, his father's city, is full of diversity and beautifully blended with so many cultures from around the world.

Thank you for the ARC of this adorable book! I loved that it was a simple stroll through NYC pointing out all the well known sites and his connection to them and enjoyment of the city. The last page was great in providing east to understand information about Zohran. The illustrations were fantastic and vibrant. Loved it.

Personally, I had given up on keeping up with the politics because how does one keep having faith in people when they keep disappointing you? But reading about how much effort @zohrankmamdani has been putting in to make sure it's people first has been a breath of fresh air. Although I'm not a New Yorker but you have already won my vote
Thank you, @millievonplaten, for bringing this book to life!

This is an absolutely lovely picture book! The illustrations are beautiful, and New York is depicted as the melting pot it is, as seen through the experiences of Zohran Mamdani in this mayoral election.

Absolutely delightful!
