Description

Join Emmie, a clever inventor living in her attic kingdom, as she battles a mischievous interloper with her ingenious creations, discovering that true friendship can emerge from even the most unexpected challenges. The Rube Goldberg-meets-David Macaulay art style brings a lively energy to this comic cat-and-mouse caper.

In the enchanting world of Emmie, the attic is more than just a storage space—it’s her kingdom! Surrounded by dusty forgotten treasures, Emmie is a clever inventor who transforms ordinary objects into extraordinary machines, each one a testament to her creativity and engineering prowess.

But when a mischievous black-and-white cat intrudes upon her realm, Emmie must put her skills to the test. Determined to reclaim her domain, she devises increasingly inventive contraptions to outsmart her furry foe.

As she navigates this playful battle, Emmie discovers that sometimes the best solutions come from unexpected friendships. With stunning illustrations reminiscent of Rube Goldberg and David Macaulay, Emmie Builds Something New is a captivating tale that celebrates innovation, resilience, and the power of kindness.

This delightful story not only entertains but also inspires young readers, especially girls with a passion for STEM. Join Emmie on her roller-coaster journey of discovery, where every challenge is an opportunity to create, learn, and ultimately build a bridge of understanding with her newfound companion. Ultimately Emmie finds a way to coexist with the cat and discovers that empathy is the pathway to peace and friendship.

Advance Praise

"Crosby-Fairall's text is driven by action verbs (Emmie sketches, scavenges, paces, and ponders) and uses a satisfying structure to build tension before gently dissolving it. The cool-toned palette--full of teals, coppers, and dusty greens--adds to the atmosphere, giving the attic world a muted glow that feels both forgotten and full of potential. The perspective shifts and textured lines bring Emmie's world to life with energy and wit. The illustrations brim with mechanical marvels and visual riddles, and the story hints at broader ideas: that even long-held assumptions, like cats and mice being enemies, can be reimagined through curiosity, creativity, and a little kindness". - Shelf Awareness

"Detailed illustrations with fine, sometime cross-hatch line work and delicate shading give an inviting depth to various scenes, and small vignettes in unbordered panels balance nicely with full spreads to build tension. Burgeoning solo and more sophisticated readers will chuckle at the punny book titles stacked throughout the attic, while little viewers will appreciate the multitude of Emmie's innovative inventions on display." - Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"The entertaining tale is bursting with empathy and creativity, and Emmie's mechanical creations are a wonder. Incredibly detailed illustrations let readers in on the nuts and bolts of the inventions, featuring close-ups of her schemes and schematics. It's impossible not to smile at the marvelous minutiae; a cocktail umbrella functioning as a mouse-sized parachute just makes sense. An enormously empathetic exploration of the creative process and the gift of giving second chances. " - Booklist

This is a really cute story that's beautifully illustrated. A mouse is happy living in their little home when a cat moves in. The mouse engineers and innovates and experiments with advanced machinery, achieving adorable results.

First, thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eArc.

I absolutely ADORED this title. The illustrations, the story, and all the little details were amazing. I love all of Emmie's big inventions because there's so much to look at. All the crashing and banging in the story would be so great for story time -- getting the kids to make noise as I read will be exciting. It will be so fun to have a physical copy in my hands so I can make an accompanying felt story.

Five stars!

An easy five stars, Emmie Builds Something New was truly perfect! Emmie the mouse lives in the cluttered attic of an old house. She spends her time building and tinkering with the things left to gather dust. When a cat arrives, Emmie will need to use her smarts, her perseverance, and her kindness (?) to solve the problem!

The illustrations in this one were absolutely wonderful. And I can think of a million applications for it with school-aged kids in the classroom (the engineering process, perseverance, showing kindness and not judging others, etc.)! A must buy for sure!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!

Emmie is a mouse who lives and builds happily in her attic home...until the day a cat arrives.
This children's book was absolutely beautiful, in regard to both the story and the illustrations.
It was written in a way that is simple yet conveys a powerful narrative about unlikely friendships.
I'd recommend this to children as young as 3.5 to 4 or to adults who love meaningful and unique children's fiction.

I love clever Emmie so much. She's smart and persistent and brave-- and it turns out she's also a wonderful, caring friend. This little story has so much imagination, with its inventive mouse and confused cat.

I don’t think I could possibly love this little book, or its clever mouse, more. It’s the kind of story I would have treasured as a child and one I would still happily treasure as an adult. The illustrations are phenomenal. Truly phenomenal. Each page is packed with detail, the kind that captures little eyes and enchants little minds.

Emmie is an inventor who has always managed to fix her problems with her creations. But when a new kind of problem appears, she discovers that not everything can be solved with gadgets and gears. Sometimes what we really need is companionship and compassion.

Oh, how I adored this book. I wish I could give it all the stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Publisher Spotlight | Red Comet Press, and Marjorie Crosby-Fairall for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thank you for the ARC. This book was AMAZING! It reminded me of the Sesame Street episode where Grover uses everyday items to build a dinosaur. The illustrations were so detailed and just perfect. The mouse was beyond creative. Absolutely loved this book!

Finally a children's book in my pile that doesn't have social commentary. This book reminded me of The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Audrey Wood, Don Wood. I loved the illustrations, the can-do attitude of Emmie and the different creations and materials she used throughout. A sweet story that will definitely capture the hearts of its readers. The messaging is nice enough and the structure is strong in order to be a mentor text for teachers looking to teach reading or writing with this text.

I will absolutely add this text to my classroom library for teaching.

This one was fun! I loved that Emmie is an example of the power of perseverance, creativity, empathy, and kindness in equal parts. The illustrations are detailed and I have no doubt would provide something new to notice at each reread.

Thank you to NetGalley and Marjorie Crosby-Fairall for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I read this to my four-year-old twins on our quest to read 1,000 unique books by kindergarten. They requested this one TWICE because the more they looked, the more fun things they saw! I love books like this that encourage STEM thinking in our young children. Solve problems by creating a plan, testing, hypothesizing, and the reworking if it doesn't go right the first time! I truly enjoyed how the cat and the mouse became friends at the end, and worked together to create a very cute and fun invention for the cat too.

Loved this read and would recommend it for personal collections, libraries, or classrooms.

Thank you for allowing me to review your work.

Delightful. I usually don't like when the text is small on the page. But it worked for this book, because the illustrations were terrific. What a fun way to teach that girls can be creative and inventive. Loved this book. I highly recommend it.
