Description

You're convinced that “Family Devo Time” is a terrific idea, but like so many past attempts … they just seem to fizzle out. The kids get bored, your spouse looks at you quizzically, and the whole experiment is quickly forgotten—packed away as “yet another good intention.” Guess what? It doesn't have to be that way! Each of these 101 five-minute readings will bring family devotions to life, helping your children (ages 6-12) develop important Christian values. Each devotional describes true-to-life situations at home and at school. Relevant scripture passages and thought-provoking questions are included to spark meaningful family discussion.

This reminded me of the "Talking Jar" we have at home. It seems like a great way to incorporate talking more at meal times with the entire family. I also enjoyed how they were true devotions. My kids are super into these now so it will be even more fun to do when everyone is home from their various camps.

This is a great tool to be used to discuss God while eating dinner. God should be the center of our lives and this could be one tool to teach this concept. Also this is a great tool to connect with your family. There are four parts to each devotional. They are the title, the what if part (a realistic situation), questions to think on about the story and then what does God have to say (verses on the situations). It is a great idea for this busy world.

Family devotion time. Great idea. Where do we start? I'd say start with "101 Family Meal-Time Devotions" by Greg Johnson. Why? This devotions is different in the fact that it's short reading, but it will open a can of worms (too gross for dinnertime?), can of beans. There's just too many ways it can go in different directions in a very good way. Isn't it what you would like; to open conversations with family, especially with kids about everything, including faith?

Great format with 3 sections for each devotion. The first is the "What If...", scenarios that opens up the conversation. It's usually about 2-3 paragraphs long (a few longer) and you can take turns reading it. (Of course, I would suggest parents taking a peek over the material first and see if it poses any reading issues in terms of vocabulary for younger kids). Next we have the "Questions to Think On...". Usually about a handful to get the conversation going. Of course, feel free to use whichever one, and if the conversation goes towards one direction, let it be. And finally, the Biblical aspect of it, titled "What Does God Have to Say"? One or two Bible verses to read aloud. What do you think? Easy enough?

Besides the format, what I love about it the most is the content. The main theme of these devotions focuses on building character and and instilling Christian values. If you need a conversation starter during dinner time, check this book out. If you want to spend time as a family and have a deeper understanding of their thoughts, check this book out. Though, please be aware that this is targeted towards families with children (ages 6-12), not just couples or families with grown children (teens and older). Come dinner time, I think it's time for "101 Family Meal-Time Devotions".

NOTE: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher, Go Tandem, and Imprint of Barbour Publishing through Net Galley for an honest review.
