Good character building and great story... I recommend

This book was an absolute ride from start to finish, and I can confidently say it exceeded my expectations in so many ways. The expansion of the ocean world was breathtaking—every detail felt purposeful, vivid, and beautifully woven into the story. It didn’t just feel like background setting; it felt alive, and it pulled me in completely.
What really stood out to me was the depth this installment brought. There was so much more complexity in the worldbuilding, the characters, and even the emotional layers of the story. I appreciated that the author didn’t hold back—this wasn’t just surface-level storytelling, it went deeper and added weight to everything that unfolded.
Finn was the perfect male main character. He carried both strength and vulnerability in a way that made him incredibly compelling, and every moment he was on the page felt intentional. He’s definitely a highlight of the book for me.
And then that ending… THAT TWIST. I’m still reeling. It was the kind of twist that leaves you staring at the page in shock, and now I feel like a rabid animal waiting for the next book to come out. The setup for what’s to come is just too good, and I know I’ll be thinking about it until I get my hands on the next one.
Overall, this was beautifully written, deeply engaging, and left me both satisfied and desperate for more.

A fun read for fans of Twilight. Very similar pacing, structure and writing style. For those fans who enjoy extremely tropey simple writing- they'll have fun with this series. Fans of Colleen Hoover who want to venture into romantasy would really enjoy this series. I found the writing to fit better with a middle grade book so it was difficult for me personally to fall deep into it, however I appreciated the fun the writer had with the story.

I just devoured the second book in this Mer series and it was fantastic! Morgana's transformation from innocent to a powerful Selkie Goddess was so compelling to read. I loved seeing her train and embrace her new abilities. Her journey to the Kingdom of Thálassa with her sworn enemy brought all the forced proximity and tension I could ask for! 🔥 The Thálassians' focus on pleasure added a unique, decadent layer to the world, and the I could definitely feel the Pirates of the Caribbean vibes there. It's getting darker and spicier, and I'm totally invested in where this series is going. Definitely recommend if you enjoyed the first book! ❤️

No more naive, wide eyed newcomer. She’s ancient power wrapped in sass, secrets, and simmering rage. Watching her step into her strength while still grappling with grief and revenge was chef’s kiss.

And can we talk about the Thálassians for a second? A whole kingdom that turns even war into a party. Sensuous delights everywhere, temptation lurking around every corner. Basically, Morgana’s ultimate test of focus. (And mine. 😂)

I really appreciate that the author is shedding light on the everyday circumstances of domestic violence victims. I also appreciate that the author has included a warning in regard to the topic of the contents within the novel. It does meet imagination combined with DV. I encourage people to read the warning and if you feel that you would like to read this novel, please enjoy. Its well written.

Sea of Pleasure and Pain opens with a shocking revelation that immediately grabbed me from the very first page. This revelation shifts the dynamics between the characters and sets a tone of tension and mystery that carries through the entire story.

The gradual build-up of the plot is masterful: every scene, every dialogue, every decision feels meaningful, and the aquatic world remains one of the book’s greatest highlights. The descriptions of underwater landscapes, mythical creatures, and maritime cultures are vivid and immersive, creating a universe that feels almost tangible.

The romance between Morgana and Finn is a brilliant slow burn. Finn is determined to protect Morgana at any cost, even if it means risking the destruction of their relationship. The way he balances love, sacrifice, and fear makes every interaction intense and emotionally charged. It’s impossible not to feel the depth of their connection and the weight of the choices they must make.

Additionally, the story is packed with suspense and carefully timed reveals that keep the reader completely engaged. Every emotional twist and challenge Morgana faces makes the story even more compelling and layered.

This was even better than the first one. I really loved this one. Morgana’s transformation really shows, and the storyline was really set at an excellent pace. I will recommend this series to my followers!

Completely obsessed with this story! This book has a lot more of the different parts of the oceans, and such amazing descriptions that I can put myself right there! I'm loving the development of the characters as they all learn who they really are, and the different relationship aspects between each of them. I was so bummed when I ran out of pages, and I can't wait to find out when the next book is coming!

I adored this sequel even more than the first book. From the very first chapter, the pacing, worldbuilding, and character arcs pulled me in completely. Morgana’s growth is one of my favorite things about this series — she’s gone from innocent and unsure to powerful, determined, and ready to face anything (and anyone).
The Thálassian setting was lush and mesmerizing, with its unique mix of seduction, secrets, and danger woven seamlessly into the story. I really enjoyed the balance between the sensual, the dark, and the emotional. The side characters also stood out, and every scene added to the sense of something bigger unfolding.
And then that ending… what a plot twist! I didn’t see it coming, and now I’m even more desperate for book three.

I almost didnt read this because book 1 was almost a DNF for me. But, since I was approved for the eARC and didn't want it to mess with my ratings, I decided to give it a read.

SO SO SO glad I did! One of the issues I had with book 1 was the information dumps. The author gave us so much history, backstory, introductions to new places that it felt very heavy on info and not on action. This book was so different! Definitely felt darker than the first in the series. It built off the world and magic and class systems. And, now that the reader is more familiar with the world, the author extended it more. Same for the characters. I didnt feel like I really got to know the FMC and MMC in book 1 but book 2 delivers! Character emotional growth is apparent and shows. I didnt love the miscommunication (or just lack of communication) trope but overall the book gave a really great journey and read. Liked it better than book 1. ac

3.75 stars. This book was filled with poor communication, and pretty much every conflict was a result of a character intentionally withholding information for selfish reasons. We pick up right where book 1 left off, but with even more POVs. I had a hard time staying engaged when the character POV changed every dozen pages.

Morgana's emotions shift as often as the tides in this book, for seemingly no reason. She spends so much time being mad at Finn for something she's too afraid to ask him about, and then when she finds out the truth, they both act like she didn't just spend months ignoring his existence. Skye is now a main character, and she spends literally the entire book burying her head in the sand because of vanity? Stubbornness? I still dont understand her mindset. I liked her a lot in the first book, but she really got on my nerves in this one.

The plot was just as engaging as the first book and really sucked me into this really cool world the author has built, but I need these characters to grow up. This probably would've been a 5-star book for me if the entire thing didn't rely on miscommunication.

Dark, sexy, totally addictive, and absolutely full of tension. The emotions hit hard, and I couldn’t look away. Love this one!

This book is based on Celtic and Greek mythology. We see how Morgana and Fin’s relationship progresses. Whilst I loved the plot and the characters, I felt the romance between these two was a bit rushed.

After reading the first installment, I could not wait to get my hands on "Sea of Pleasure and Pain." J Strelou has created an intricate world under the sea that is captivating and mysterious. I love the world building and mythology that is present throughout the novel, with many elements from different myths and religions woven through. The second book continued to build the romance between the FMC and MMC with their bond deepening and distrust growing at the same time. I thought the attention paid to Skye was great and watching her story unfold was an added bonus. I can't wait to read the third installment to see how it all ends!

Sea of Pleasure and Pain continues J. Střelou’s richly imagined world, full of detailed magic systems and immersive worldbuilding. I enjoyed stepping back into this setting and meeting a new cast of characters—it’s clear the author has built a vibrant, layered saga.

That said, the tone often reads much younger than expected, even with darker, more mature themes (such as the abuse Skye experiences). This was something that detracted for me in the first book as well, and it carried over here. Some sections also felt unnecessarily drawn out—many conflicts could be resolved if the characters simply communicated, rather than resorting to repeated dramatic outbursts (“I hate you, leave me alone!” *storms off*).

While I remain curious to see how the series concludes, I don’t feel an urgency to pick up the next installment right away. Fans who enjoy strong worldbuilding and don’t mind a more youthful tone in character dynamics will likely find much to enjoy.

Compared to the first installment, we are given a much darker story with more loss and pain. Many emotions were felt while reading this one 😭 We were brought through some crazy moments on the quest for the prophecy that I can’t stop thinking about! The plot was plotting but I do have to say I felt it could be slow at parts, but in all, this was an amazing read! I highly enjoyed the multiple POVs to get each of the characters' individual emotions and perspectives!

The enemies-to-lovers trope is so strong I feel for these poor characters 😅 the back and forth with their developments that seems to be more of setbacks.. all with reasons.. I know. Buttttt it breaks my heart for the characters.. Morgana & Finn, Skye & Aranare. 🥺 The moments we get are pure gold. I would love to see more, but that’s just me shipping these couples in book three🤞🏼🖤 I am here for redemption arcs, although trusting people just got even harder as we continue through this series…

The world was once again as immersive and beautifully written as the first book, and I loved coming back to this aquatic universe 🌊🧜‍♂️🪸

This sequel really turned up the stakes and the spice 👀 I loved seeing Morgana come into her power and embrace her role in this larger, ocean-spanning prophecy. The worldbuilding in Thálassa was gorgeous and lush, and the dynamic between her and her sworn enemy had me so invested.

It did take a bit to find its rhythm, but once it did, I was hooked. The atmosphere, mythology, and emotional growth made this such an addictive read. If you love fantasy with ocean magic, ancient prophecies, and a touch of temptation this one’s for you. 🌊✨

For readers who crave a lush, myth‑infused fantasy where sensual decadence collides with an urgent quest to protect the sea, and who love atmospheric world‑building that balances intoxicating pleasure with looming, elemental danger.

From the emotional twists and turns to the epic plot twists with not one, but four of the main characters, I was on the edge of my seat. I could feel the emotions the characters were experiencing. Their pain, anger, hatred, love, happiness, and sadness seemed to jump off the pages to latch onto the reader.

This installment saw each of our characters going through some of what seemed to be the darkest moments in their lives. Truths were revealed, lies were uncovered, and mistakes were most definitely made. But this added a deeper connection to the story. This allowed you to see the human aspects of our somewhat inhuman characters. This dark and twisted fantasy, this love and hate, makes this such a wonderfully heart-stopping read. And there most definitely were heart-stopping as well as heartbreaking moments.

We get to see our leading lady, Morgana go from a shy, timid girl (in book one), to this fierce warrior in book 2. She may not have mastered her magic yet, but somehow it knows what she needs even when she doesn't. And Skye, her best friend, a tragic tale she WAS. In this book she struggles with who she was, what she became and ultimately, how her and Parker "ended". The war is coming, Manannan is on the Horizon, the drowned are at the gates and there is still a prophecy to be discovered. Plot teist after plot twist makes the book truly engaging.

The ending of this book gives you a glimpse into what the next book will be like, but it also raises some concerning question about our characters. Will, Skye be able to convince Morgana of Finn's true intentions? Will Skye and Aranare reveal their true feelings? Will Finn really let Morgana go? And the biggest question, What will Morgana become after she finds her father in the Mors? The anticipation for book 3 is in my bones and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Alright, let's go. Sea of Pleasure is the second book in The Deep Saga.

I enjoyed the first book so I was ready to pick up where it left. While I overall enjoyed the book the beginning felt sooooo slow. It took a little to really get into but then I was hooked.

The character J. Strelou has written are complex at witty. We have a deeper insight into the main cast due to the rotating POVs. It did take a little to get used to because we had so many but I really enjoyed it. We also just don't have enough of Edward.

The chemistry in this series is top tier. While an inventive spin due to the tails, the spice isn't the spiciest but the lead up is just as good honestly. I'm also intrigued by where several potential love arcs are going. I mean, we could honor Agape and have a why choose situation.

Sea of Pleasure and Pain is to the mermaid girlies what ACTOR is for the fae girlies.

book 2 was better than book 1 writing wise. I could see the authors growth with the writing although the pacing still needs more work because it was off in this book as well as book 1.

The multiple povs was ok at first but did get confusing towards the end because we kept switching mid action ish and it felt like they didn't add anything new to the story.

Some parts of book 2 were recycled parts from book 1 so if you read them back to back you might feel like you're reading the same book twice and get bored so I suggest you take a break inbetween the 2.

That being said I applaud the author for her improvements since book 1.

This instalment follows Morgana as she grows into her powers and travels with her sworn enemy to the Kingdom of Thálassa, where she searches for answers tied to an ancient prophecy. The world of the Thálassians, filled with temptation and danger, was an interesting backdrop that added depth to the story.

While I enjoyed parts of it and the overall idea has great potential, I didn’t find myself as drawn in as I was with the first book. Some sections felt slower and didn’t hold my attention in the same way. Still, the concept and worldbuilding remain strong, and I’m interested to see how things develop in future instalments.

Sea of Pleasure and Pain is the second book in The Deep Saga, and is coming through with a lot more darkness to the depths than its predecessor, Sea of Evil and Desire.

We’ve got extra POV characters, which I particularly enjoyed. Skye was an unexpected POV, but I truly loved every moment of her perspective, even if my heart hurt for her. She’s an incredibly strong woman, and I can’t wait to see more of her story and powers as the series continues. With the introduction of Skye’s story, we have some incredible, unique concepts which I won’t spoil, but they really hit the spot for me.

Finn and Morgana are still doing a bit of push and pull with their feelings, which are infinitely more complex after the first book. The tension has increased, and with every few chapters, I felt like I was going insane because I didn’t know which way it was going to go 😂

This was a book very rich in lore, where we learn SO MUCH about the gods, prophecy, history, underwater kingdoms, and even priestesses. I think this is a good setup for the next book, which is going to be very action-focused, I feel.

The last couple of chapters sent me spiralling in the same way as book one, which I feel is a nice nod to J. Strelou’s writing style.

Overall, this book is what I would call a dark mer fantasy, rich in lore. It’s not a cosy read, but it is a beautiful one, with very vivid depictions of the beauty of the ocean and all its glory.

I’m so into the mythology, the romance, and the literal journey - the characters move from the ocean around Scotland to Greece in this book. The trials, battles, and personal struggles feel epic but lack the pacing and development to fully realize the epicness of the story. Having said that, I can’t wait for the next installment to read more about the political intrigue, the worlds of the Mer, The Drowned, the Gods… what a ride!

First off - the author’s note had me cackling! *Hands up* - You caught me!
This was such a wild ride! Like a rollercoaster that just kept getting faster and faster - and one I did not want to get off!
I read the first book and then read this second book in record time!
The world building was so expansive, and the author did so well in creating a world that is both vast and rich in culture and history! I want to know everything about this world!
I really enjoyed that we went more in depth about the history of the characters, the curses and prophecies! There is still so much we don’t know though and I need the next book to find out more!
The introduction of all the other species was great! The species are all so unique! I appreciated that the author took creatures that we all know and put her own spin on them! It makes it fun and exciting to read and learn about!
Finn, Finn, Finn… What are we going to do with you. His lines in this book were so romantic, and you can tell he is just so sick with love for Morgana! I’m here for it! I can’t wait to see what the next book holds for these two – especially with that ending! I said in my review in my last book that “He keeps saying he's bad but I'm not seeing it!” – still not seeing it but I hope we get to see a more unhinged version of him in the next book.
Skye – my darling girl – her chapters were probably my favourite of the whole book! Love her character and I enjoyed seeing her exploring her sexual freedoms! It was so much fun!
The ending had me on the edge of my seat and I will be counting down the days until the next book is released! Looking forward to some exciting dinner dates 😉

Sea of Pleasure and Pain carries on right after Sea of Evil and Desire. We dive straight in with the same supporting characters from book one as well as some new faces.

My favourite part of the story has definitely got to be Skye's character development, the way her being depicted in a dark abusive relationship was such a great example of what real women go through daily. The inner struggle of knowing you should leave, yet staying because they might change... It was so raw and meaningful. Seeing her grow and gain so much more confidence as the book progresses was definitely something I enjoyed a lot.

The overall story in book two is so beautifully written and so immersive. I had an underwater playlist playlist as I was reading this and the vibes were immaculate. The worldbuilding and the history is explored to a greater depth which only adds more structure to the story and the different underwater species involved. I loved learning about the God's and their gifts and how their respective races gain certain traits because of that.

I really enjoyed the story and I loved the way it ended which makes me excited for book three whenever that is to come! I sense as each book goes on the contents of the story gets darker and I'm so here for that.

This was a very lore heavy book with a lot of information which is fundamentally very important for the story. The pacing was off at some points for me which hence my rating however the actual story itself was beautiful and I know it'll only get better!

ARC Review - Sea of Pleasure and Pain

Sea of Pleasure and Pain is the second book in The Deep Saga by J. Strelou and picks up where book 1 ends with Morgana and Finn preparing for a quest through the ocean kingdoms. In book 1 we learn Amor Perdot Nos (love destroys us) and man does this theme continue in book 2. I felt like I was set up for emotional turmoil and devastation from the prolgoue and my fragile heart aches after all the secrets are laid bare by the end.

In this book we are treated to multiple POVs and I enjoyed getting to know secondary characters like Skye and Aranare, while still following our MCs Morgana and Finn on their journey. I did find Morgana a little frustrating with her stubborn behavior, one track mind and lack of communication and Skye was a bit the same too, but by the end they had improved.

Finn is portrayed as the morally grey enforcer in book one but I loved learning more about his past and seeing his vulnerability at times. His declarations of love make me swoon but he too could do with working on his honest communication and martyr tendencies. The hopeless romantic in me just wants a HEA but with a four book series and phrases like "I love you...three simple words that encompass my salvation and my ruin" I won't get my hopes up.

The underwater world that Julia has created is beautifully described and I loved the journey through the different kingdoms and the real world crossovers, history and mythology she seamlessly weaves together. So much happens in this book from the quests for ancient artifacts and prophecies to political summits and spicy soirees. I can't wait to continue the deep sea adventures in the next two books and see where the tides take us.

If you want to try a different genre of fantasy and enjoy underwater creatures like Mer, Selkies, Sirens and Drowned with a side of spicy romance and adventure give The Deep Saga a try. Book 1 A Sea of Evil and Desire is available now and book 2 A Sea of Pleasure and Pain is out December 6th.

When I dove into Sea of Pleasure and Pain, I was drawn immediately by its promise of dark ocean-mythology, power, and seduction. This is the second book in the The Deep Saga, and it picks up the story of Morgana who has transformed: from naive newcomer to bearer of ancient Selkie-goddess power. The stakes are higher, the setting more decadent (hello Kingdom of Thálassa), and the tone decidedly more adult-fantasy. 

What I loved:
• The world-building continues to fascinate. I found the underwater politics, the clash between sea-kingdoms, and the ritualistic, sensual culture of the Thálassians richly imaginative and immersive. 
• Morgana’s character growth: seeing her carry ancient power, wrestle with revenge, and navigate both desire and duty made her journey feel compelling rather than simply reactive. The thematic duality of “pleasure” and “pain” is woven into her arc and kept me engaged.
• The sensuality and atmosphere. The book doesn’t shy away from dark romance tropes, morally-grey characters, and “monster romance” elements. If you like an edge of danger with your romance, this delivers. 

What pulled me out:
• Because this is book 2 in a series, I did feel a dependency on having read book 1. Some plot beats lean on established lore and character history, so if you jump in cold, you might miss nuance.
• At times the sensual / “pleasure” elements threaten to overshadow the “pain” side — I found myself wanting more exploration of the cost, the emotional wreckage, rather than just the seductive surface.
• With so much happening — prophecy, magic, kingdoms, romance — occasionally the pacing felt uneven: scenes of intense feeling or revelation were sometimes followed by slower stretches of exposition. For me, that slowed the momentum.

In conclusion: Sea of Pleasure and Pain is a satisfying upper-level entry in a dark fantasy romance series: ambitious, sensual and steeped in myth. If you love moody, sea-borne mythologies, selkies/merfolk, forbidden power, and romance that flirts with danger, this will hit a sweet spot. If you prefer tighter pacing or romance with lighter stakes, you might find it a bit heavy. For me, I’d give it 4 out of 5 stars — confident, evocative, and richly atmospheric, and I’m already curious to see where Morgana’s journey goes next.

I enjoyed this book (which is book 2 in the series & I did read Book 1 first). I normally don't choose sci-fi or fantasy books, but I didn't realize its' genre when I started the first book.

I was quickly engaged in the characters & their lives & was anxious to see how things played out in this book since Book 1 left at a cliffhanger. (UGH!)

I would recommend the book for those who enjoy this genre & are not offended by language & intimate acts.

From the first page, the tone is set: this is a story of lost loves, emotional turmoil, and a search for something just out of reach. As the plot unfolds, it becomes a swirling mix of seduction, secrets, and sea-bound struggles. J. Strelou does a fantastic job at pulling the reader into the underworld of the sea. You feel the currents of emotion, the weight of tension between characters, and the haunting beauty of a submerged world filled with danger and desire.
While at times the pacing can drift and some scenes feel a little repetitive, the emotional highs and lows keep you engaged. It’s not just a story—it’s an immersion. The balance of fantasy, romance, and emotional complexity makes it an intriguing second installment.
Just be warned: don’t skip the first book. You’ll need the context to fully appreciate the depths explored here.

This installment is darker, layered with seduction, secrets, turmoil, and tension. The expanded world building and rich backstory truly shine here. I actually found myself enjoying book two even more than the first. The multiple POVs added a great dynamic.

This book has multiple first person POVs, mostly focusing between Morgana, our main FMC from Book 1, and Skye, a secondary FMC who we get to see a lot more of in this book. There are a few chapters spread out from some of our male MCs, but we mostly focus on the ladies in this one.

The spice content for this book increases a bit more from the first one. I would rank this a 2 out of 5 on my personal scale. While not being overly descriptive, we do get more scenes and different ways our characters get intimate.

I was very glad to see Skye more in this book as I really enjoyed her character in the first book. My heart went out to her for all that she went through and I was glad to see her growth through the story. I'm excited for what strength she'll show us in the next one! It was also nice to see Edward step away from his prejudice more as well. His love for history and spouting random facts and information is really endearing.

Now, this thing between Morgana and Finn... I was so happy when things started progressing again between them after they actually started talking to each other and getting things cleared between them, but of course Finn has to go all secretive protector on her.... I really really hope they are actually end-game and that I'm not just getting yanked along.

The flashbacks we saw through the visions gave us more insight to Manannan and his previous life. We are set to get more of that through book 3. the long-awaited reunion between father-daughter also feels like its just around the corner. This story is one that will stay in my mind with the what-ifs until I'm able to devour the next book! This was a very good follow-up to Sea of Evil and Desire, for sure!

I loved being back in this world. The worldbuilding is rich and immersive, and the expanded POVs added so much depth. Learning more about the gods, the history, and the new characters was a highlight, every addition felt meaningful and exciting.
The ending was wild. I was on edge the entire time and could not put the book down. I absolutely need book 3 after those twists!

Skye’s POV was a standout for me. Her growth is heartbreaking but powerful, and I was glad she had more page time. Morgana also shines, strong, determined, and fiercely loyal. I really hope we see more of her family next. Finn continues to be wonderfully complicated, and Edward completely stole my heart with his humor and protectiveness

What a start! I loved seeing Louisa and Aranare step in to help Morgana with her training, and watching her truly grow into it was so satisfying. And then we get Skye’s POV. Oh my gods, I absolutely loved that addition. Skye is such a complicated and fascinating character, and the topics addressed through them feel incredibly important and grounded in real life.
Aranare’s POV was another great surprise that added so much depth to the story.

Poor Edward, though. He really can’t catch a break. The emotional hits just keep coming for him and it had me feeling for him the whole way through.

This second book is such an interesting continuation. I’ll be honest: I absolutely devoured the first book, while this one felt a bit slower for me. Not because the story wasn’t good, but just because I personally struggled a bit with reading at the time. The story itself was so worth it. What a ride.

I also discovered something new about myself. Apparently I really love stories involving aquatic life and underwater creatures. This author made that discovery very easy.

There’s plenty of tension and yes… that kind of tension 🥵. If I had one wish, it would be for slightly fewer fights or misunderstandings between the main characters. But overall, it’s a captivating, emotional and beautifully built romantasy that I would absolutely recommend.

Sea of Pleasure and Pain picks up right where Sea of Evil and Desire left off — and within just a couple of chapters, I felt fully caught up and immersed again.

The pacing in this book is fantastic, barely letting up for a moment. This instalment leans more into the world-building: the creation of the Kingdom of the Deep, the realms and their politics, the origins of the prophecy, and the heartbreaks that have shaped its course.

Morgana’s journey feels far less lonely this time, with Edward and Skye at her side. Admittedly, Skye’s stubborn streak tested my patience at times, but by the end, she’d won me over. And Edward? I’m officially adopting him as my gay bestie.

There’s a larger cast in this book, but thanks to Strelou’s sharp characterisation, it’s easy to keep track of who’s who and what roles they play.

The relationship between Morgana and Finn had me completely tangled in emotions — happy, sad, angry, confused, all at once. Whatever they were feeling, it was intense.

So much happens in this book, yet it never feels overwhelming. Strelou proves herself a mastermind of plot, pacing, world-building, and the art of a jaw-dropping twist — because this one ends on an absolute doozy!

I’m genuinely in awe that she managed to release this book so soon after book one, and with such polish and power. I’ll be waiting (impatiently!) and very eagerly for book three.

I gave this 4.25 stars. I truly feel like the author filled in so many gaps from book one. I loved watching Morgana grow. The story really started to hook me in.

I definitely enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to anyone interested in dark romantasy.

I truly enjoyed this and I have continued to think about it after finishing it. I want to go back to that world. There is a huge improvement in the writing. Huge. World building is much better as well. I still felt lost as times trying to figure out how we got somewhere in the vast sea but much less often than in book 1. This story and world is fresh and captivating. I found Morgana insufferable for the first two thirds of the book though.

Morgana’s evolution is one of the most satisfying parts of the series so far. She’s stepping into ancient power with grit, determination, and a very personal sense of purpose, and I loved watching her grow into someone who is no longer running from her destiny.

And then we get to Thálassa.
A kingdom built on pleasure? Decadent rituals? Sensuous distractions lurking in every shadow? It’s the kind of setting that feels immersive in the best possible way: lush, tempting, a little unhinged, and undeniably fun to read. 😅

This sequel is darker, richer, and more intense than the first — in tone, in stakes, and in emotional weight. Check the trigger warnings, but if you enjoy mythic romantasy with darker edges and immersive worldbuilding, this series is such a rewarding escape.

I enjoyed the first book, but this one exceeded my expectations! Every question I had about the world-building and magic system in the first book was answered in this one. Moreover, I loved that different myths, legends, and even real-world history (mixed with fiction) were sprinkled throughout the story.

I enjoyed the relationship between Finn and Morgana from the start, and it remained just as lovely, but the side characters really shone in this book. I loved the different POVs and enjoyed getting to know some of the other characters. The banter between them made me giggle, but there was also depth to their characters.

The plot twist at the end was shocking but still well planned, and the cliffhanger made me very excited for the next book!

Sea of Pleasure and Pain picks up right where Sea of Evil and Desire left off and having read book 1 immediately before I had no trouble getting into book 2s story and felt immersed once again in Morgana's story.
I loved the pacing of this book it is fast and leaves no time for boredom. We have plenty of world building associated with the underwater realms we deal with politics, the prophecy, and the historical heartbreak associated with these realms.
Morganas journey in book 2 involves a lot of support from the side characters although I did find her character a little frustrating at times. I love Edward! he is a fabulous side character and one she clearly can't do without. I wish he was my gay brother he's just fabulous. There's plenty of story around the other abundant characters but I didn't feel lost by their storylines at all.
The relationship between Morgana and Finn had me in a chokehold at times with emotions ranging from happy, sad, and angry. it felt pretty intense at times.
So much is happening in book two it really is full of action but due to the authors writing style I never once felt confused or unsure what was going on, although I did find myself having to keep rechecking who's POV I was reading about as I had moments of wondering who's POV I was on, this may be more to do with me, than the authors writing style.
I really enjoyed this book it had me hooked all the way through even though I'm not sure I'm an ocean fantasy mer, and selkies kind of girl long term.

I’m really impressed how quickly she has released book 1 and 2. I look forward to book 3 on its release.

In her seal suit, Morgana enters the Kingdom of Thálassa. She encounters not only a need for revenge, but the one person she doesn't know if she can trust and most certainly loves, the merman and prince, Finn. Will their journey together reveal some hidden secrets of the past?

At the same time, Skye is dealing with her own abilities, powers, and uncertain feelings. Will she come to terms with who she is, and can she use her powers for something positive?

As if matters weren't dark enough, there is a dark, monstrous creature that needs to be stopped before he takes over everything and everyone in the ocean.

I really enjoyed the first installment of this series, so I was excited to continue the story with Morgana and Finn in its sequel! One of my favorite aspects of this book and series is the creativity of having its main plot under the sea. It's an interesting perspective as I have not read many books that feature main characters living under the water. I love visualizing how each half-human creature is living in the water and attempting to picture the landscape as well.

This sequel is told through multiple perspectives - Morgana, Skye, and Aranare, which was an interesting combination. Last book, I felt connected to Morgana and Finn, the characters whose perspectives were shared. However, I did not feel much, if any, connection with Skye or Aranare. In fact, there was a point when I didn't actually want to read Skye's perspective when it seemed all she wanted to was have sexual intercourse/interactions with a merman. It was something she did to block out some strong emotions and a tragic event that happened to her, however, that didn't make it any more pleasant. I also became frustrated with Morgana when all she needed to do was ask one question so she wasn't so upset with Finn, however, she didn't and it dragged on for far too long. I also missed reading Finn's perspective, which wasn't present for most the book.

As far as the plot is concerned, there were moments of excitement and moments that I had difficulties in wanting to skim over. I loved the sense of urgency and suspense when the plot was focused on the prophecy and the impending war that is coming. However, the amount and focus on having sex with merman was just too much. It took away from the plot more than added to it. Then, of course, all the trust issues and lying that occurs seems immature and was not very pleasant to read.

Themes of trust, honesty, deception, love, relationships, destiny, communication and friendship are built into this novel. The deception/lies I did not appreciate within the main couple of the story. I understand that not all relationships are perfect and sometimes white lies happen, but it's not necessarily something that I would like to read about. In addition, the lies that were told and the lack of basic communication just pulled me away from the story.

Content warning: As mentioned previously, there are several sexual scenes in this book, and some torture/abuse scenes.

Overall, the overarching plot is a creative one and love the ocean setting, however, the execution seemed a bit too juvenile. I give "Sea of Pleasure and Pain" 3 out of 5 stars. For those who do not mind a romantasy where deception and lack of communication is present in its flawed characters will enjoy this read. I also believe those who do not mind an ocean-based plot and sexual scenes would enjoy this one too.

This is one of those books where the second book really levels up over the first. I liked the first one a lot but this one really how’d the stakes. Morgana has more depth and is more confident and I really love her character. I also enjoy the author’s writing style and that this is so different from so many of the copy and paste romantasies out there. I love that the author has branched out of poetry because these books are definitely worth the read.

Now that is how you do a book two. It builds beautifully without drowning you in new plot lines, and the romantic tension is 10/10 addictive. The stakes are high, the emotions are higher, and I’m honestly scared (in the best way) for what book three is about to unleash.

Look, all the characters actually pmo a little bit but that’s a sign of good characters to me; they’re genuine, flawed, and sometimes a bit problematic. Anyways, here’s what I thought about them:

Skye was a standout for me; every chapter felt like she reclaimed a little more of herself, and watching her find her strength was one of the highlights of the book.

Aranae and Finn? Let’s just say I’m always here for a man who is down bad for his girl.

Morgana, who drove me a little wild in book one, truly comes into her own here, despite her being kind of useless with her powers, which was genuinely hilarious. And also, girl, JUST LISTEN TO HIM, ffs!! As someone who loathes miscommunication, I wanted to shake her 🤭🫨

There were a lot of characters to track, but Julia’s blend of fact and fiction made the world beneath feel breathtakingly alive. Her writing remains as poetic and immersive as ever. And those first 130 pages? I couldn’t put it down. Completely locked in.

Bring on book three. I’m not ready, but I’m so ready!!

The worldbuilding expanded beautifully here, diving deeper into the mythology and politics of the underwater realms. I particularly appreciated the multiple POVs, especially Skye's chapters, which added emotional depth and tackled some heavy themes with care. The tension between Morgana and Finn kept me hooked, though I'll admit the miscommunication between them dragged on a bit longer than I'd have liked. Still, the atmospheric writing and that wild ending left me desperate for book three!

The reason I’m giving this book four stars instead of five is because there were a few slower parts in the middle that felt slightly repetitive, and some moments could have been a bit more detailed or polished. However, these didn’t take away too much from my overall enjoyment.

Morgana’s journey truly shines in this installment. Watching her step into her power while still grappling with who she is and what she’s becoming made her feel incredibly real. The relationships—romantic, antagonistic, and found family—are layered with emotion, longing, and mistrust, and the forced proximity elements add delicious tension throughout.

The mer and selkie world is decadent, dangerous, and intoxicating. I loved how pleasure, politics, and prophecy all intertwine, creating a setting that feels both lush and threatening. The morally gray characters continue to steal the show, and the monster romance elements are chef’s kiss spicy without overpowering the story.

And that ending… the cliffhanger absolutely wrecked me. Once again, J. Strelou left me desperate for the next book, and I’ll be counting the days until we return to the depths.

"I binged books 1 & 2 of this series in about 3 days (with work in between), because they were so good. I love a good romantasy that incorporates myths and legends, but it's not often you find one that includes sirens, mermaids, and selkies that ISN'T a retelling of the Little Mermaid. This series had mystery, suspense, a slow burn romance, betrayal. The magic system in this series is unique, but not terribly overbearing to the story. Our FMC Morgana is well-written and dynamic, not the one note heroine that we can see in romantasy. Our MMC Finn is attractive, mysterious, and definitely a touch-her-and-die kind of guy. I know Skye is not everyone's cup of tea, but her POV and Aranare's POV chapters really added to the complexity of the story IMO. I really cannot wait for the next book in the series!

If you like Katee Robert's Dark Olympus series (with less spice, but still a good amount :) ), and Abigail Owen's Crucible Series, you'll love J. Stelou's Deep Series!

Sea of Pain & Pleasure was an absolutely stunning continuation of the series! From the very first chapter, I was pulled right back into the beautifully crafted undersea world so vivid and imaginative!
This book was packed with emotion, tension, and jaw-dropping reveals that kept me turning the pages way too late at night.
I loved getting to experience the story from multiple POVs! Each perspective added depth, complexity, and heart to the narrative, making the entire world feel even more alive.
The character growth in this installment was phenomenal. Watching these characters evolve, confront their fears, and uncover hidden truths made the emotional beats hit even harder. It felt like every turning point mattered, and every choice carried weight.
Overall, Sea of Pain & Pleasure delivered everything I hoped for and more. A captivating world, layered storytelling, and emotional depth that made it impossible to put down. I’m already counting the days until the next book!

This is absolutely epic and crushing second book in The Deep Saga!
The series got an explosion of world building and character exposition in this book. With surprise side character POVs and a twist that will crush you!

All these little Easter eggs from the first book (some that you don’t even think are eggs!) come into play!

Some characters, who shall remain nameless, *cough* Finn *cough* I wanted to kick in the pants and others I just wanted to kick period 😂 I’ll keep that name actually secret but if you’ve read the first book… you can probably think of a few 🫣

But also I want an Edward book a novella even! I’m not picky!

The world building, the characters being so diverse and well written (even if that well written character made me want to shake them and tell them to get their heads outta their rears), the complex layers! All of this was wonderfully done and an amazing sequel to the first book! Where's the next one??

This series is such a fun read. I didn't know that I was missing mermen in my reading but it turns out I was. The romance pacing was sooo good! We don't jump in right away which is so important. The world building is so seamless and beautiful. I want to live in the ocean and I just know I'm going to have a reading slump after this because I'm not in the ocean with mermaids and mermen and sirens etc. Book 1 is dual POV while book 2 is multi-pov with an intro and tease into a new couple which I just LOVE! Book 2 is out now and I can't wait for book 3!

After reading Sea of Evil & Desire (Book 1), I dived straight into Book 2 of the Deep Sea Saga — Sea of Pleasure & Pain. I was so excited when I saw the ARC and got accepted!!

The story carries on seamlessly in this series, and I think I enjoyed Book 2 even more. It’s jam-packed with adventure and suspense, constantly keeping you guessing. I was so intrigued that I wished I could read faster at times — you can feel it building towards something huge 👀

Some of the standout qualities for me:
🧜‍♀️ immersive underwater world-building
💙 emotionally charged moments that really grip you
✨ fantastic character development (old favourites and new ones)
🌊 plot twists you sense brewing but still don’t see coming

I’ve just bought the physical copy on Amazon, and I cannot wait for Book 3!

I enjoyed reading this. I got this as an arc copy from NetGalley and obviously I had to read the first to understand this one. I found both books very enjoyable. It took me a moment to kind of get my head round the magic systems and the different families and the history of some of the characters. But overall, I very much enjoyed the story and I loved the way that everything came together.

I enjoyed the additional POVs of Skye & Aranare in book 2 & I’m very eager to delve deeper into their potential.

I grew much more fond of Skye in this book. She’s definitely a good side character & developed a lot by the end of the book.

I’m very interested to see where the next book takes the characters & whether it’s a happy ending or a painful one. 🩵

If you enjoy monster romance, morally grey characters, forced proximity, found family & political intrigue - then this series is definitely a good one to add to the TBR! 😍

J Strelou's writing developed a lot for book 2. I was so excited to drive back into the Deep Saga with Finn and Morgana.

Sea of Pleasure and Pain is a mesmerizing blend of fantasy romance and dark intrigue. Morgana's transformation from innocence to Selkie Goddess is compelling, filled with twists that keep you hooked. The lush world of the Thálassians, with its seductive pleasures and political machinations, adds depth to the story. While some plot points can feel a bit tangled, the engaging characters and romance shine through. A solid four stars for ocean lovers and merman enthusiasts alike!

That was fantastic. Been looking for a series like this for a while and this didn't disappoint

This is a great second book. It gives us more back story of the other characters and shows great character development with how they are dealing with their new lives.

This was a perilous dark romantasy sequel perfect for readers that love books with a dark, haunting ambiance and moody MMC with a traumatic past.
I loved the addition of the new points of view in this book; it really absorbed me in the storyline.

The twist?! Absolutely insane, makes you want more and just hooks you. The world building is incredible and I just loved being able to delve into this world and losing myself. My jaw is still on the floor with all twists and turns, in shock! Highly recommend

3.75/5 ⭐ The lush imagery, compelling storyline, complicated relationships, and interesting side characters kept this story both moving and intriguing.

However. Morgana spent so much time trying to be angry at Finn and then just gave it up so fast. I didn't feel connected to her the same way I had in the first book. Their story felt more flat to me, though I think that had to do with the more POVs in this book and the loss of the intimacy with the MCs (storytelling, not spice, though I did want more of that, too).

I didn't feel like Skye killing Parker fit much at all. Her storyline felt forced to me. I think it would have been better to do more of a duology type style and keep the focus on Morgana and Finn then add in more of Skye and Aranare in the next book(s).

Still, I am invested enough to want book 3 and am happy for the ARC opportunity I received from NetGalley for this in return for my candid thoughts.

I put this one off for a while because I just wasn’t in the mood to pick it up — and now I’m mad at myself because I should have started it immediately. It was so good. I absolutely loved the first book in The Deep Saga, and this sequel delivered in every way.

Morgana is still reeling from everything that happened before, trying to find her footing in a reality she never asked for. Her emotional journey felt real and heavy, especially when it comes to Finn — because the feelings are still there, but the trust? That’s a completely different monster. Their dynamic had me stressed in the best way.

One of my favorite things about this installment was getting more from Skye and Aranare. Having their POVs made the story feel bigger and richer, and I loved being inside their heads and seeing how their roles are expanding in the overall plot.

And that ending?? I was not prepared. The secrets, the lies, the reveals — I was sitting there with my mouth open in complete shock. This turned into a full “just one more chapter” situation until suddenly I was done and desperately needing the next book.

I need more Finn, more Morgana, more Skye, more Aranare — and I am really hoping for more Alexandros in the next one.

⭐️ If you loved the first book, this sequel does not disappoint. Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for the next release.

I read book two immediately after book one and felt as though book two, Sea of Pleasure and Pain, raised the stakes and pulled me into the world a bit deeper. In this story, her relationships and powers seem to be more fragile and characters we met in Sea of Evil and Desire play a bigger role.
If you haven't read book one, go back. This installment really benefits from having read book one. It will help you to understand factions, politics, and gain character and world development.

There are multiple POVs which added depth and tension so I felt more invested this time around. The worldbuilding stood out because the folklore went beyond just the typical mermaid romance. They dove into more titles and some I hadn't even heard of before. The deep see feels magical yet heavy, the characters morally grey decisions make the story slightly darker and more layered than the first book.

As for the romance, it is still lighter than it could be, however, it is still intense and tragically warm. One thing I was not over the moon about was the ending. It leaves off setting up the next book. Although some readers LOVE the idea of waiting for the next book, I would have preferred a tighter close/cliffhanger.

Thoughts: Read book one 1st, Read trigger warnings to any book that has them, and I'm ready for book 3!

First of all, I want to express my appreciation for the author and NetGalley for providing me an copy of the book.
I have read the first book in the series and enjoyed it, however this second book has even improved; in this follow up to Sea of Evil & Desire you will become intimately familiar with each of the underwater realms that the author has painstakingly created. Although the first novel established this world, the second one has taken it one step further and provides such depth to the mythology of the kingdom of Thalassa that it creates a vivid picture of a world that is both alive and conscious. The ability of the author to create the political conflict between the mer and the drowned and the other various ecosystems makes you feel like you are a character partaking in that world building.
The story follows Morgana and Skye as they must hurry to discover a prophecy that has the potential to save their lives and to stop the destruction of their world via a horrible plague. While this dynamic and the character interactions had some problems, this second book should create a greater interest in the second book for readers.
In conclusion, although there were some minor pacing problems and a few apparent repetition of events throughout, the build-up to the ending of the book was intense and resulted in a cliffhanger that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the release of the third book. If you enjoy fantasy with a slow burn, high emotional stakes and amazing world-building, then you owe it to yourself to read this.

I was so not expecting this series to be this good but I literally cannot wait for the next book. I wasn’t sure about seeing Skye’s pov in this book but it was actually so good and it really brought a new aspect to the story that I simply loved. Also feeling like this is maybe going to be enemies to lovers back to enemies and maybe some yearning? Anyway I don’t know but I’m excited for the next one. The betrayal and the mystery, the suspense, the love and everything magic really hooked me and I loved it!
