Description

When you've lost all that you believe in, how will you know what's worth fighting for?

An ancient villain draws Macarthy Black into its spiral as a mysterious drought overtakes the region. When legends such as the Marfa Mystery Lights and the Ghost Torch of the Chisos go missing, Macarthy returns to her witchy roots only to uncover that the enemy has set a target on her back. She finds herself in cahoots with renegade meteorologist and closet necromancer, Remy Gaumond; scholar and sassy librarian, Jonas Rodriguez; and the charmingly dark, cartel-associated Vincent Salmerón. Tensions and wit run high as this makeshift group of strangers race to uncover their villain’s weaknesses before it unleashes its world-altering Reaping.

Sassy witches in the Desert Southwest, an ancient unhinged villain, frontier ghosts, and spooky abandoned places. Tell me, what is it you believe?

The Harvesting Angel of the Plains by Bladen Mercutio
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)

Thank you to NetGalley and Bladen Mercutio for the early access to this book in exchange for an honest review!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Harvesting Angel of the Plains. The story was engaging, and the world-building was rich. I really appreciated how each character was written with their own unique struggles and flaws—none of them were perfect, and that made them feel real. I have to admit, I’m here for the complex dynamics between Remy and Vincent (don’t judge me, but I loved them!). Their interactions were some of my favorite parts of the book.

The plot follows four main characters as they work together to save the world, and while the concept isn’t necessarily new, it’s executed well with strong character development. My only real issue was the pacing—it was a little slow at first, especially as the author took time to build the world and give us the backstories of the characters. But once it picked up, I was hooked. By the end, I was eager to dive into the next installment.

If you’re a fan of fantasy with elements of witchcraft and strong character arcs, I definitely recommend this one. I’m excited to see where the story goes next

This was a strong start to the Southwest Gothic series, it had that supernatural element that I was looking for and was engaged with what was happening. I enjoyed this as a opening chapter and am excited to read more in this universe. The characters had that overall feel that I was wanting and enjoyed the concept. Bladen Mercutio wrote this well and was engaged from the first page. I was engaged from the start and really glad I got to read this.
