Description

“My darlings . . . Not to be too Hollywood about this, but if you’re watching this tape, that can mean only one thing: I have shuffled off this mortal coil . . . and you two are going to need each other more than ever. You need to set aside your differences and look out for each other—just like you always used to.”

Poppy and Rose used to be close as sisters could be—until everything went wrong. Now in their forties, they haven’t spoken in years. But when their vivacious, glamorous, powerhouse of a mother dies, they are both faced with the shock of grief. However, their mother was not one to go shrinking into the night. No, their mother, Andrea, has left them a project to work on together: a sort of scavenger hunt through their lives, which she calls the A to Z of Everything. Her final wish: to heal the fractured relationship between her daughters that broke her heart.

A is for Ashes. C is for champagne. D is for Daddy Issues. But when they get to F for Forgiveness, can they make a start, even when they can barely look at each other?

With Andrea’s wicked sense of humor and wild stories from her acting career, she has left the quest in a series of boxes filled with letters, recordings, videos, mementos, and instructions.

From Liverpool to London and even Paris, the sisters follow the trail toward a glimmer of hope: despite loss, there is room for laughter, love, and healing—and for second chances.

“My darlings . . . Not to be too Hollywood about this, but if you’re watching this tape, that can mean only one thing: I have shuffled off this mortal coil . . . and you two are going to need each...

A book that manages to be both heartbreakingly poignant and unexpectedly funny.

It’s a beautiful, honest study of grief and family dynamics that reminds you it’s never too late for a second chance.

I always enjoy Debbie Johnson's books, and this was no exception. A beautiful story about a mother's undying love, love and heartbreak between sisters, and the gift of a journey toward reconnection. And the reminder of how we never get over missing our mother once she is gone--I haven't.

Many thanks to Harper Muse and NetGalley for the advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This story has a simple premise, but the way the author weaves in stories, tasks, and emotion take it to another level.
Many people will be able to relate to the story of a family broken apart. It is hard to "forgive and forget". So it is even more remarkable seeing how to get through what's holding you back and moving forward in life.
This was done in a thoughtful and honest way while dealing with grief.
You will laugh. You will cry. In the end you will be glad you picked up this book.
Enjoy!

Reading The A to Z of Everything reminds one of how fragile and short life is. Too short for harboring regrets and holding grudges and withholding forgiveness. This book is a perfect gift for everyone who has siblings and loss someone to death. Wow! It is an eye-opener. Thanks so much for the ARC and an insight I will not forget.

I was so glad to receive an advance copy of this book, the description of it was so appealing to me and I instantly felt like it was going to be the kind of book I loved. Luckily, I was absolutely correct. The A to Z of Everything tells the story of estranged sisters Rose and Poppy who discover their mother has passed away and has left them instructions to try and help them reconcile their once inseparable relationship.

This book, as expected, was heartbreaking, heartwarming, funny, sad and hopeful. A stunningly written book that I consumed at an immense pace because I simply couldn’t get enough. The characters of both Rose and Poppy were complex but understandable and experiencing their journey together was very satisfying. I also especially loved the character of their mother Andrea, who was such an incredibly inspiring character showing how much joy can still be found in life even through great hardships.

I feel this book should be read by everyone. It is a beautiful reminder of how short life is and how forgiveness can make all the difference. Whilst reading this book I felt every emotion possible, the witty language lifted my spirits and the sad moments had me shedding tears.

I couldn’t stop reading this book but also wanted to stop so that I could savour it more. The sign of a truly wonderful book. I highly recommend this excellent read.

Rose and Poppy are sisters. They haven't spoken to each other for a long time. Their mother Andrea's best friend Lewis calls them to inform them that their mother has passed away. Their mother, with the help of Lewis, left behind a list that will help heal the sisters and perhaps bring them back together.

Rose and Poppy are very different from each other, and I enjoyed both characters flaws and all. This book was such a rollercoaster of emotions for me, and it hit home. I love books about sisters and the trials that come with having such a close yet complex relationship. Lewis was a favorite character of mine. He seemed to be so full of love and empathy for Andrea and he was definitely feeling her loss hard. The tasks that the sisters had to do were hard yet funny and so emotional for them and for the reader as well. I was sometimes mad at the sisters, but I never judged them and I kept on rooting for them. Even if at times I felt so heartbroken for them, I wanted the best ending for them.

Thank you Netgalley and Harper Muse for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

Two sisters who have been estranged for many many years must come together when they find out their mother has passed away. Andrea starts the a to Z of everything. Here she goes through the alphabet and brings together everything in her life and her girls lives starting with A for Andrea going all the way to the letter Z. Andrea has tried in vain to get her daughter’s back to speaking with each other. One devastating mistake in both Rose and Poppy‘s lives separates them for many many years. It takes Andrea‘s impending death to bring the girls hopefully to bring the girls back on speaking terms.. Going through AtoZ the girls brought them to some highs and some lows in both their lives and their mother’s life. They do have many questions concerning their mother, their father and why things happened the way they did.. can rose and Poppy come to a reconciliation? Will their mother’s letters, tapes, films give the girls the answers that they want? Will Rose and Poppy be able to move on in their so-called dull and meaningless lives after they finish with their mother’s last words to them?

I enjoyed this book immensely. I love the characters. I love the whole way. This book was written. Using the alphabet to put out how a mother truly loved her two daughters and tried whole. Hardly to get them back together because that was her last dying wish. Andrea was a mother who tried her very best in raising her daughters to give them the best and not let them down. Rose and Poppy two to devoted sisters who fell apart over one damaging night. That one night drove them apart, and they were never able to get back to each other’s life. It showed you the vulnerability of two women who one poppy has success in her business life, but it wasn’t what she really wanted. Then there was Rose ,once guarded as the most. Important person would do great things with her life. Ends up divorced, raising a son on her own and squashing any of her dreams of getting into the medical field. It shows you the love of family how hard two people fought to get back to the way not really the way it was but to get back into some kind of loving connection. If not for themselves then for the love of roses, son Joe. He had many questions about his aunt about what went wrong and the strong love of his grandmother. The two women have grown going through this alphabet journey, and I truly enjoyed reading how it turned out. I would recommend that this book wholeheartedly.

So thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. I look forward to the next book by Miss Johnson. She wrote a wonderful wonderful story.?

This book just built and built. I wasn't sure quite what to expect, but what I got was an emotional and moving read. What love and dedication Andrea had for her two daughters. The A to Z was fantastic and just what the sisters needed to mend past hurt and make a future together. Like mentioned in the book, I too felt such sadness that it took their mother’s death for them to reconcile and I too wished Andrea could be there with them.

Lewis was a great character too, his dedication to Andrea was fantastic and I really felt for him, being the only support for Andrea in her final weeks but also helping her create the A to Z and being her solicitor. You could really see the effect it all had on him and how sad and lonely he was without her. When Rose and Poppy invited him to movie night and then included him in their lives afterwards was really touching.

A great book that I found hard to put down as we get jumps back to the past to find out what happened to cause the rift and the info we get from Andrea as she works through the alphabet. She really was a strong remarkable woman.

I really enjoyed this book! This book was about a woman who found out that she only had a short period of time to live and her last wish was to help bring her two estranged daughters back together after she died.
The book was touching, poignant, and had humor throughout. Rose and Poppy are in their early 40’s living in different cities in England and have not spoken to each other in almost 20 years. They come back to their mother’s funeral and cottage to learn that she has crated a game for them based on the alphabet but they must do it together.
I loved some of the references to the 1980’s TV shows and bands. This book made me smile as well almost shed a tear. The letter “T” was very emotional- watch out for that one! I am very glad I read this one- it was a great read for those who like family drama.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Muse for allowing me to read an ARC of The A to Z of Everything by Debbie Johnson in exchange for my honest review.

I absolutely loved The A to Z of Everything by Debbie Johnson!

This was such a powerful, emotional read. The characters felt completely real - messy, flawed, and deeply human. The sister dynamic especially hit hard. The tension, the history, the unspoken hurt… it all felt so authentic.

I loved how the story balanced grief with warmth and humor. It made me cry, but it also made me smile. There’s so much heart in this book. It explores forgiveness, self-forgiveness, taking responsibility, and the idea that it’s never too late to repair what’s broken.

I found myself completely invested. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, but I also didn’t want it to end. It’s one of those books that makes you reflect on your own relationships and the things left unsaid.

Emotional, hopeful, and beautifully written. Definitely one that will stay with me.

i mean you just have to say Debbie JO.... and im in. its a Debbie Johnson book people. its time to start smiling!shes been one of my favourite author for years. so long. from her first. and i cant wait each time to get stuck into her books. they have never wavered, they have never had an off day, they have never not been wonderful. and i can happily report that has not occurred here either. this was another smartly put together novel with all the tone and voice i love about Debbie and all the beautiful characters who you just step into the pages and walk alongside for the duration.
what would you do if you mother had created a list for you to full-fill on her passing? amidst the grief would you give it a go. if its your mums final wishes? but what if doing it meant you had to do so with the person you've been estranged from(hence the reason she even did it for them). and if that person is your sister?
so this is for our sisters Poppy and Rose. they have both gone their separate way in lives after the rift. coming together will mean going through this setup from their mother. along the way she has put together videos and tapes to watch and listen to. and wow some of those even made me do a little gulp of emotions.
what has gotten me so much in awe of Debbie is to make this plot work its almost like she literally created this fulfilment quest in itself. because it just fits, works so seamlessly. to be able to put this together. to walk us and the characters through it is just brilliant skill and talent as an author.
the girls are in grief when they follow this quest from their mother which makes it all the more heart hitting. not only the loss but also the loss of even knowing their mother was at this stage of illness. you can feel that from the woman. and you hurt with them and for them.
we go on this path with them. and it takes us readers too to what happened. we see how they were and then what happened to make it all fall apart. and it wasn't easy to read. and only makes you feel for the woman all the more. you are almost protective and therefore fully invested in being by their side as the carry on this task and journey.
this book will make you want to hug those you love. and also think about what if it became too late? are there little things we would regret not doing, addressing, saying to someone. even the little things.
another stunning book. just wow.

I read Debbie Johnson's The A to Z of Everything in one sitting. I've never done that before. But I couldn't take a break from Andrea's, Poppy's, and Rose's story. Once I started, I needed to see it through to the very end.

I found this to be a perfect read. The premise is beautiful and unique - a mother (Andrea) on her death bed creates an emotionally healing journey for her surviving daughters (Poppy and Rose) through her project called "The A to Z of Everything." The story unfolds like unwrapping a precious gift. It tackles grief and guilt, joy and laughter, forgiveness and healing. Yet it does so in a way that doesn't feel too heavy to bear. Did I cry? I sure did. But I also laughed. I stopped to remember. I was eager to see what crazy ideas Andrea would come up with for the next letter. I felt cared for as a reader just as much as Andrea cared for her daughters. This is a journey that felt wise and raw and so very important, especially for mothers and daughters.

Debbie Johnson wrote a truly special story here. I can't recommend it highly enough. Please read it!
