Description

Nicollo Moro, Venice's most feared investigator, is out of a job. Gambling his hopes for a new livelihood on a trading expedition to the East, he arrives in Constantinople, only to find the city gripped by fear as it waits for an Ottoman army to appear at its walls. Soon, a mysterious death in the Venetian quarter gives him an opportunity he has been longing for -- to resurrect his old role and show there is still no one who can do it better. But as he tries to follow the tracks of the elusive killer, he finds he has entered a maze where all trails seem to disappear. And with powerful forces scheming over the city's fate, the man he is after may not be the only one lurking in the maze's labyrinthine passages.

A Measure of Justice is both an intriguing puzzle and a wonderfully imagined recreation of a pivotal moment in history, transporting readers to a city of grand palaces, secretive monasteries, and desolate, despair-ridden streets populated by vivid characters.

A Measure of Justice blends mystery and history into a story that hooked me right from the start. Nicollo Moro, once Venice’s most feared investigator, finds himself chasing a killer through the tense streets of Constantinople as the city braces for siege. The mix of political intrigue, richly described settings, and a puzzle that twists at every turn made this a book I didn’t want to put down. I especially enjoyed how real the world felt—it was like stepping into another time while following a mystery that kept me guessing until the end.

⚔️ Murder, mayhem, and a city on the edge of collapse—count me in! A Measure of Justice throws you into Constantinople just as chaos is about to erupt, and Nicollo Moro is the kind of investigator you can’t help rooting for. I loved the way every alley and palace felt alive, and the mystery itself? Total brain-twister that had me flipping pages like crazy. If you’re into history with a side of danger and a killer plot (literally), this one’s a must-read. 🔎🔥

A Measure of Justice is a richly atmospheric and gripping historical mystery that swept me straight into the heart of fifteenth-century Constantinople. From the very first pages, I was drawn into Nicollo Moro’s story—a once-feared Venetian investigator who, after losing his position, takes a gamble on a trading voyage only to find himself caught in a city bracing for siege and thick with tension.

When a suspicious death occurs in the Venetian quarter, Nicollo seizes the chance to step back into the work he knows best. What begins as a single investigation soon becomes a labyrinth of dead ends, hidden motives, and dangerous secrets. With Constantinople’s fate hanging in the balance, Nicollo finds himself navigating a maze of intrigue where powerful factions are scheming, and the killer he seeks may be only one of many threats lurking in the city’s shadows.

What makes this novel shine is the way Mark Sherry brings the setting to life. The grandeur of palaces, the solemn quiet of monasteries, and the despair of the streets are rendered so vividly that the city itself feels like a character. The historical detail is immersive without ever slowing the pace, and the mystery is tightly woven, full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end.

Nicollo is a fascinating protagonist—haunted, relentless, and brilliantly skilled—and following him through the maze of politics, danger, and deception was utterly compelling. The blend of a classic investigative puzzle with the charged atmosphere of a city on the brink makes for a story that is both thrilling and deeply evocative.

A Measure of Justice is an impressive mix of historical drama and mystery, perfect for readers who love intricate puzzles set against richly imagined backdrops. It is a novel that lingers long after the final page, a reminder of how personal quests and great tides of history can intertwine in unexpected ways.

This really used the Venice element perfectly and kept the use of the time period perfectly. The characters felt like they were supposed to in this setting and was invested in their storyline. I was engaged with the historical fiction element to this and was engaged with what was happening. I was invested in what was happening and how it was told in this book. Mark Sherry wrote this well and had that element that I wanted from this type of book and uses the mystery overall perfectly.
