Description
When moving to a new school is the LEAST of your problems...
Cecilia "Sissy" Wardwell thought starting 8th grade at a new school would be her biggest challenge. She was wrong.
Dead wrong.
When her family moves into a new house, Sissy discovers an antique hairpin hidden in the attic-a family heirloom with a chilling secret. The moment she puts it on, shadows come alive, and the dead make themselves known.
What would YOU do if you could suddenly see ghosts?
Sissy's new "gift" turns her world upside down just as she's trying to fit in at Calderon Middle School and make friends with Albany (the goth kid) and Marlow (a band geek).
The last thing she needs is a house full of spirits. But when Sissy wears the hairpin to a Halloween party, a nightmare breaks loose. Invisible forces wreak havoc, sending people running and destroying everything in sight. Sissy must choose between hiding her supernatural abilities or embracing the paranormal to save her classmates.
Maybe some family heirlooms are better left buried.

This was a really fun and spooky read that I think is perfect for middle grade readers around nine or ten years old. The story has just the right balance of mystery, light scares, and humor, with a heroine who is easy to relate to and a setting that feels both cozy and eerie.
I enjoyed the way the book captures the Halloween spirit while keeping things accessible and never too frightening. It is short, fast paced, and engaging from start to finish, making it a great choice for kids who want to dip their toes into horror without it being overwhelming.
A creative and entertaining story that feels like a perfect introduction to spooky tales for younger readers.

So first I love this cover, and I don't think there are enough wonderful little middle school horror books. This one is fun -- it's easy to relate to Sissy, who is not part of the in crowd but who has a vivid imagination and cool friends. She discovers that her grandmother's old hair accessory helps her see ghosts, but it's perfect for her Halloween costume.
I liked the story itself but also the relationships with her family, including her grandmother, who is forgetting things but I suspect may know more about what's happening. This is a great start to this series.
