Description

Felicity the dragon may live near a castle and lounge in its moat, but she is not a typical dragon: “no smoke from her nose, no spikes on her toes, and her wings were too tiny to carry her hiney.” Because Felicity is small and different, she keeps to herself instead of playing with others. But one day, a small boy falls into the castle moat, and Felicity has the chance to help—and make some new friends in the process.

Felicity the Dragon by Ruthie Briggs-Greenberg tells the tale of a small dragon, who does not behave as the ferocious dragons do. Felicity feels very different and like she will never fit in with her peers, as her hobbies differ greatly from those of her fellow dragons.

One day while playing alone, as she always does, Felicity has the opportunity to utilize her differences for goodness and discovers that she can indeed make friends.

Felicity the Dragon is an adorable tale of triumph in the face of adversity and can serve as a tool to aid children with low self-esteem and those who feel odd and alone. In addition, the short story could be utilized to teach children about differences among peers as well as acceptance.

Being different can make children feel like they don't fit in and in this cute little story about Felicity the Dragon, that is exactly how little Felicity feels. She is small, her wings are small, and she is far from ferocious. Without giving away too much more, this is a great novel to teach kids they are important no matter what. Cute illustrations filled eyes with wonder and those who adore dragons will find it even cuter.

Felicity is a dragon, but not the usual fierce fire spitting one. She is friendly, no fire spitting here, no claws on her toes and her wings are too small to carry her. She has a little dragon cuddly toy and likes to paint. As she is so different from all the other dragons, she keeps to herself and often feels lonely.
One day, when she sits near the castle moat, a group of children play close to the water and one small boy stumbles and falls into the moat.
Without thinking Felicity jumps right in after the kid to save him and luckily she succeeds. (The way the dragon gets the child back to shore is actually quite funny.)
Now, all the children are very happy and grateful and they invite Felicity to stay and play with them. Felicity is glad, her wish has come true and she has found friends.

The first thing I liked about this book were the unusual illustrations. They are quite unique, as they mostly look like watercolour paintings and it's no wonder, as the author is an artist and there's no doubt, painting is her passion. My favourite is the one where Felicity cuddles with the boy.
Some of the words used in the book are a bit tricky for young children, like ferocious or precocious, but I know from my preschoolers, that they are always up for a challenge and eager to learn new stuff.
The rhyming story carries the important message, that staying true and honest to yourself will find you the right friends in the end, who will accept you the way you are. It's a book, which will help children with a low self-esteem and as a dragon Felicity will of course hugely appeal to all kids.

Children usually love dragons, so having a dragon as the main character in this story will delight them.

Felicity the Dragon by Ruthie Briggs-Greenberg tells the tale of a small dragon, who does not behave as the ferocious dragons do. She is small, does not have claws or breath fire, she is not big or mean. She feels different and that she will not fit in or that the other dragons will not like her. One day while playing alone, as usual, Felicity has the opportunity to use her talents to save a boy and make friends.

Felicity the Dragon is an adorable tale of how children with low self-esteem or that feel different, can triumph and make friends while being honest to themselves.

This short story can be used to teach children about differences among peers as well as acceptance of themselves and others. I was not sure about the pictures in this book. They were murky and not well defined, some aspects were hard to see.

Simple, colorful illustrations and a positive message that no matter how small or insufficient one might feel one can still be of help and worth to others.
