This book is beautiful, toxic, and unsettling in a way that sneaks up on you.
Every Exquisite Thing follows Penny Paxton, the daughter of a famous supermodel, who enrolls in an elite drama school determined to prove she’s worthy of attention, success, and love. But in a place where everyone is competing to be perfect, that pressure quickly turns into obsession. When she’s offered a chance at eternal beauty through a mysterious portrait, it feels less like a risk and more like survival—until things start going very, very wrong.
What makes this stand out is how deeply it dives into beauty, control, and identity. This isn’t just a dark academia story—it’s about what happens when your entire self-worth is tied to how you look and how others perceive you. Penny is not an easy character to love, but she is painfully real. Her need for validation, her self-destructive choices, and her constant questioning of “am I enough?” feel brutally honest.
The atmosphere is one of the strongest parts of the book. The drama school setting is intense, competitive, and almost suffocating, layered with gothic, eerie undertones that build into psychological horror. It’s less about jump scares and more about a slow, creeping dread that something is off and getting worse.
There’s also a strong emotional core tied to family pressure, ambition, and the expectations placed on young women. The story doesn’t shy away from difficult topics like body image and disordered eating, which adds weight but can also make it a heavier read for some.
If I had to critique anything, it’s that the world-building around the supernatural elements can feel a bit vague, and the pacing isn’t always even. But the themes and emotional impact carry it through.
Overall, this is a dark, haunting, and thought-provoking read about the cost of perfection and the danger of tying your worth to beauty.
