Description

Reese is Book #1 in a six book series written by Lori Handeland and Linda Winstead Jones.
If you liked the Magnificent Seven, you'll love the Rock Creek Six!
Six elite Confederate soldiers band together after the War Between the States, hiring out their guns to protect lawless towns. Violence is all they know, until they make their way to Rock Creek, Texas.
Mary McKendrick, a headstrong schoolteacher who wants nothing more than to find a home, takes charge when a band of ruffians attempts to destroy Rock Creek. With very few men left in town after the war, Mary travels to Dallas to hire Reese, the mysterious and reluctant leader of a band of guns for hire.
Reese is haunted by the war and all he did during it. The only constant in his life are the five men willing to come whenever he calls them. They will do anything for each other; they are all they have left.
Though Mary prides herself on managing everyone and anything, she can't manage Reese or her feelings for him. Reese doesn't believe he is worthy of loyalty and devotion; he certainly isn't worthy of love. In Rock Creek, Mary McKendrick teaches him differently.

Six hard men who have fought together through war and beyond are paid to come to Rock Creek to deal with El Diablo and his gang. All of the men have secrets they have never shared though they have been together for at least seven years.

This is the introductory book of the series and tells the story of Mary and Reese. Mary is the schoolteacher and seems to have more gumption than anyone else in town. She wants to stay in Rock Creek and is willing to use her hard earned money to remove the threat of the banditos that come too often to town. Reese was a Confederate soldier and is haunted by his experiences. The story of their meeting, getting to know one another and growing close is fun to read. Neither have expectations but both care more than they are willing to share.

The other five men are introduced just enough to make me want to read more about them and find out what their secrets are and who will manage to make them whole.

I have only read this book in the series and truly enjoyed it. I have found out through looking online that the books in this series are written by two authors that alternate with each writing three books in the series.

This is a great book; this is the first book in the Rock Creek Six series by Lori Handeland. This series is about six elite Confederate soldiers who band together after the War Between the States, hiring out their guns to protect lawless towns. When they get to Rock Creek, Texas they learn that they can have a new life there. Reese is the leader of the band of guns for hire; he is mysterious and is haunted by the war. Mary McKendrick is a schoolteacher in the small town or Rock Creek, when the town is threatened by El Diablo and his gang, Reese and his band work together to protect the town. If you are looking for a great romance, with some suspense then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

Everything, is what Mary offers Reese to help save her town. However Reese wants EVERYTHING. Reading this book I kept thinking that would have been a good title also, Everything. Reese shows up in Rock Creek with 5 other men that call him Captain. Reese doesn't want anyone to rely or have anyone get too close. Mary gets a little too close though. In the end Everything is what it takes. Can't wait to see what happens next for our band of 6.

I am fan of writer Lori Handeland and this one didn't disappoint me either. Brilliant work! I must confess that this is the first non-panoramic novel I've read from her (Liked Night Creature series and Sisters of the Craft series), and I was bit sceptic, especially as it was Texas romance. I am not into cowboys at all so this was pleasant surprise. Great piece and was tempted to read Sullivan right away but also getting bit confused as that is written by some other author (don't know why that is)

Great work (I know I am saying this again) please write such novels and have it on Netgalley so we can review it for free ;)

A good start to a fun series. There are six men who have become a close knit "family" after the civil war, and each of the six books are based on their story (and romance). This is the first one, and Reese is a good strong character. The only thing that cost a star. and it may be a little unfair of me, but at times the voices seemed a little modern (especially for the women) and that distracted me a bit. Otherwise, I like this series, and the two women who take turns writing the books are great writers. Would highly recommend.

...reluctant heroes

I actually don't read Western romances, so it was a huge surprise to me as to how much I enjoyed 'Reese'. The series tells the stories of six crack confederate soldiers, special forces, bound by their experiences, in the post war years. It hints at their secrets and their nightmares. They have vowed that when one calls the others will come. Reese's is their reluctant leader. This first in the series captured my attention, and against my normal inclinations in reading material, after this introduction, I will be reading through them. I can't wait to discover the stories behind the men. I do so love those strong, silent types with inner anguishes who find their defences pierced by managing females with their own internal bedevilments.
Reese and his comrades are hired by Mary McKendrick, the teacher from Rock Creek to frighten off a band of desperadoes who are hassling the town. The folk are leaving, the town dying. It is up to Mary and her hired guns to sort this situation out--if they can.
