Description
A Junior Library Guild Gold Selection
★ “The art is a wonder in both style and effectiveness. . . This is an exemplary use of illustrations to convey the biological processes that are often unseeable to humans. R*" – Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
An exquisitely presented account of the life cycle of a Pacific salmon that is sure to entice young naturalists with its accessible design and inviting and informative text
She begins as a tiny orange egg . . . smaller than a pea! Salmon Run follows a Pacific coho salmon as she begins her journey in the freshwater rivers of Washington State, travels to the vast Pacific Ocean, and finally returns to the place of her birth to spawn and begin the cycle of life once again.
During this arduous adventure that spans hundreds of miles, she will grow and change through five distinct stages of life: egg, alevin, fry, smolt, and adult. From river to estuary to ocean, she will hide from predators, search for food, and encounter a range of marine environments.
With a careful balance of scientific accuracy and luminous illustrations, Salmon Run invites young readers to explore the remarkable life of this keystone species in the North Pacific ecosystem—and the magic of its journey home.

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. A beautifully illustrated book about the phases of the salmon from egg to adulthood. The information is great, but the illustrations are amazing.

This book was informative, but it also showed the beauty of science and nature. I think it would hold the attention of students if presented as a read aloud book. I would recommend this book as an addition to a school library.
The illustrations in this book were absolutely stunning. This is a great book to discuss the life cycle of salmon.

I think the illustrations of this informative story were beautiful. The author made sure to have all the information of a salmon life cycle. I would say this would be best for grades 3 and up. Lots of great vocabulary words as well to discuss.

This was a gorgeous picture book full of facts about the lifecycle of a salmon, told in a lyrical narrative. It was a pleasure to read. I don't think I ever realized what a salmon's trek from egg to adulthood, freshwater to saltwater entailed. This immersive book really draws the reader in and is perfect for poring over as readers enjoy the lovely illustrations.
I highly recommend this book for schools and libraries.
Beautifully illustrated book describing the life cycle of Pacific salmon by following a female salmon character through her life. The text is easy to read. The scientific info presented is simple but not too simplified, with age-appropriate terms used in context. This book would be a great addition to any elementary classroom or home library, though younger kids may need help reading and understanding some of the more technical terms and concepts. The author's note at the end adds interesting personal context to the production of this book and might be of interest to older readers. There is also a more detailed description of the species and its lifecycle at the end of the book, including a QR code to the publisher's website for a glossary, which are also nice additions for older readers (and teachers, parents).
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital ARC.
