This was so much fun! I love a good road trip story, especially one filled with wonderfully spontaneous adventures and activities, and this was done so well!
The story follows scientist Mag who's made a huge discovery and possibly created something that will change health care for the better forever, but when her bosses hear about this, they fire her and try to steal her research. Mag gets drunk, sleeps in her car, only to wake up and find she's been kidnapped by a handsome woman named Dorian. Dorian is grieving from her brother's death and is following his last wish for her to finally live her life before she possibly dies too from the same disease by following his travel guide around Europe. Mag, having nothing to loose, ends up joining Dorian. The pair go from absolute strangers to lovers willing to risk it all for each other.
The plot does focus on the romance development and fun rather than the science and story we've been given at the beginning until the last few chapters of the graphic novel. Regardless, this wasn't an issue for me, but I can see how other people may feel misled or confused by it. I really loved the romance between Mag and Dorian, they're opposites but also exactly what each other needs. They're both going through tough times in their lives, and I adored how they opened up and supported each other.
I did enjoy what we were given of the high stakes stolen research plot, though never deeply explained what this groundbreaking discovery *really* is, I enjoyed the concept, action towards the end, and glimpses at the other scientists (especially the clumsy chemist!).
The end epilogue had me gasping in shock, I was actually tearing up until it took a sudden twist and was revealed to actually be happy (which I'm obviously glad about). It was super cute, the ten year skip felt right, and overall felt satisfying and still had the fun vibes!
4/5 🌟

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read A Thing Called Truth.
This is a graphic novel compiling the ten chapters of A Thing Called Truth in which we are following Dr. Magdalene Traumer aka doc and Dorian's journey in Europe to escape but also learn more about themselves. It starts off as a way for Dorian to connect with her late brother and what he wanted to do and evolved into getting to know Magdalene and having fun.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel! The plot was great and made me want to continue reading to know how things would end up. The evolution of Doc and Dorian's relationship was well-written and so cute. The art was also gorgeous.
I would give it a 4.75 stars!
I got this as an arc on Netgalley and the all ten comics version will come out in January. Yes! This sapphic chaotic mess of a story was funny, heartbreaking and exciting. Absolutely loved the ride.
In this beautifully illustrated and thrilling journey we find two women, both lost, find everything they didn’t know they needed in each other.
Mag, a workaholic, has devoted 7 years to research in order to save lives, costing her a marriage. But when the company she works for fires her and steals her life’s work she’s left lost. Enter Dorian, a free spirit who, after losing her brother, has embarked on a roadtrip he planned out in order to finally live life to its fullest. Their paths collide and an unforgettable journey ensues.
I loved Mag and Dorian. Two complex, nuanced depictions of having been living half a life. Together they brought out the best in each other and learned that there’s more to life than work or fear along the way.
With the backdrop of famous cities, crazy challenges, and a cast of found family that pitches in to help we see Mag & Dorian become the heroes they set out to emulate. Brave and strong and free.
What you’ll get:
•Sapphic
•Workaholic Dr./Free Spirit
•Corrupt Heath Care Corporation
•Accidental Kidnapping Meet-Cute
•Grief + Loss
•Road Trip to live life to its fullest
•Finding out there’s more to life
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for the early copy. This is my honest review.

“Until the very end if you let me.”
What a beautiful surprise.
Completely different than i expected, but i was absolutely thrilled. The characters are so well written and the art is just simply beautiful.
Oh, I adored this! The art is so stunning, and the writing really draws you in from the very first page.

i liked this!!! i love sapphic fiction and this was no exception. i loved all the characters and the romance was very sweet. i loved the whimsy and adventure and had a really good time with this!
The love story you didn't know you needed. Fired under the guise of a false resignation in an attempt to steal your research leads to a night of overdrinking. At least Dr. Magdalene Traumer knew better than to drive, so she crashed in her car, only to be "kidnapped" by someone fulfilling her brother's bucket list: visiting famous movie sights and recreating the scenes. Confusion, mayhem, and sparks fly. Life can get exciting when you take a break from saving the world.
A few on-page steamy scenes put this fab graphic novel at adult.
A Thelma & Louise road trip adventure where they actually get to fall in love on the page! The art matches the energy of the story very well.
So the reason I wanted to read this is because as you all know I love queer graphic novels and Oni Press is my favourite graphic novel publisher. So when I saw this one I knew I had to jump at the chance. I went into this not knowing much about the graphic novel and honestly I believe that is the best way to enter this one. This story had me going through such an emotional rollercoaster. The story is so bittersweet and is really heartbreaking at times, so I would definitely recommend reading this with a pack of tissues. However, for as many heartbreaking moments it has, it has much more hilariously cute ones. I found myself rooting for both the main characters from the very start and I loved how all of their differences brought them together to be and do something magical. I read this in one sitting because the story genuinely had me at the edge of my seat throughout most of it and wondering what they were going to do next on their adventure. The side characters truly added to this story also and were so easy to fall in love with, even when they weren't always at their best. I genuinely would recommend this to everyone who just wants a nice cute romantic comedy graphic novel, who's not affraid to feel the emotions this one will put you through. I loved this and definitely will be getting a physical copy of it once it's out!

An amazing sapphic road adventure/heist tale. For fans of adventure, romance and slice of life. I would highly recommend this to everyone
This was wild, heart warming, heart breaking and funny, all in one! I really enjoyed this graphic novel but strangely have no words at the moment. I've just finished it and I am basking in its warmth.

It's perfect; I never wanted it to end! A Thing Called Truth is a graphic novel that has all the hallmarks of the best-of-the-year romance. It follows Mag and Dorian, two very different women who find themselves on a Europe-wide road trip, re-enacting epic movie moments. The story is filled with humour, love, and real-life conversations that were nuanced, but never changing the overall optimistic tone. I'm looking forward to picking up anything else by Iolanda Zanfardino and Elisa Romboli.
The novel does exactly what it sets out to do. The pace and illustrations are perfect. I read it on a 7-inch black-and-white ereader, and even though I missed out on the colours, the reading experience was exceptional.
Thank you, OniPress, for the ARC!

Beautifully illustrated, delightfully told story. Hilarious dialogue sometimes, really lovely story.

I liked this a lot! This was awesome! Lots of fun. This was a fairly light graphic novel while at the same time having a decent plot (in the background, hah!) that was strong enough to keep things interesting without grabbing too much attention.
If you are looking for a fun road-tripping-adventure-coming-out-of-your-shell experience, then I recommend this one for sure.
Like many graphic novels I’m glad I had the whole story all together (I’m not sure if this was originally in pieces like they often are) because it would not have been nearly as great if I didn’t have the entire thing.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free ARC. This honest review was left voluntarily.

I requested "A Thing Called Truth" without many expectations, simply because it promised to be sapphic, and the blurbs seemed good. It was one of the best decisions I made because this was one of the most sapphic and original stories I read in a long while.
When the story starts, both heroines are at rock bottom, and I enjoyed how the writers did not shy away from making them messy and flawed. I also loved that we were following a black scientist, and showed how much she had sacrificed in her career, to achieve something great and contribute something good to the world, and capitalism and greed will always be in the way of true progress and improvement.
The art was also really beautiful, and I loved how different characters more masc gender presentation was drawn and how beautiful the plus-sized character was.
My favourite part of this story was how original the character dynamics were and the adult themes it touched on, such as a character going through an ugly divorce, deciding on having children, work-life balance and situationships.
Oh, and it's by Italian creators and set in Europe.
Thank you to NetGalley, Edelweiss, Oni Press and Simon & Schuster for this DRC.

A Thing Called Truth is a wild and fun adult graphic novel. Two very different people are thrust together on a crazy road trip across Europe to re-enact scenes from famous movies. But there is a more serious sub plot of intellectual property theft. Recommended for adult graphic novel collections.
this was such a fun read! the art was amazing, I loved the depth of color and how much the lighting was highlighted to show mood and tension. the story was so heartwarming and had that touch of bittersweet but with lots of love and hope. I loved all the different types of relationship dynamics shown and the divorced to buddies arc is very fun. lots of sweet character growth and development on top of a fun adventure about saving the world!
thanks netgalley for arc access!

A Thing Called Truth is a wonderful LGBTQ+ road trip comic with lots of heart! There are two main characters, Dr. Magdalene Träumer and Dorian Wildfang. Magdalene has just invented a scientific way (with less money) to help people than the current possibility, but she ends up losing her job because of the need for higher profits. Dorian then has just lost his brother to an illness and the brother left her a diary to follow their movie dreams. This is how two the meet accidentally and embark on a road trip across Europe and realizing they have feelings for one another. The whole setting is very credible and of course good guys win, but the road trip is actually interesting as it binds these two cutely together in awesome cities. There's depth in the comic and there's electricity in the plot, what more can you wish for?
A Thing Called Truth is exciting, funny and heartwarming. The plot works and the pace is good too - lots of action and feelings mixed well together, really. It's credible and the best part is that it's set in Europe and the main characters are from Germany. The art looks very good too. We need more comics like this!
A Thing Called Truth had me enthralled until the very end. I found myself waiting on bated breathe with each turn of the page, trying to figure out what was going to happen next before it happened. It was adventurous and thrilling to the point that I could not put this book down.
Mag and Dorian are on a road trip of a lifetime, seeing parts of the world and doing things most people only dream of doing. We get to see them both grow and change as characters as this story progresses, and it leaves you wondering 'will they' or 'won't they' at different parts of the story. And, the best part, this road trip is only a piece to an even bigger story, and the author was able to tie everything together beautifully.
I would recommend this to people that enjoy a graphic novel romance with a bit of thrills and adventure. This story was fun and exciting, and I truly hope there's a next installment of the series because I want to see more of all of these characters.

I loved this sapphic love/adventure story. Mags, a research scientist, and Dorian, a free spirit, collide and set out on an adventure together. Neither wants to talk about the past, but the past won't let them go. Mags was told she resigned after the company she worked for locks her out of her lab to steal her research. Dorian, after losing her brother, decides to complete his dream of traveling across Europe to see all the places from his favorite movies. Together, they find out what is important, and each makes the other want to be better people.
A sapphic road-trip romp across Europe recreating iconic movie scenes while trying to save a doomed world: what’s not to love? I had a blast following idealistic scientist Mags and fearless Dorian whose time is running out. The stunning art style only added to the immersion, making me feel like I had been whisked from country to country along with the pair, though never making me feel like a third wheel to their romantic arc. Paired with a background storyline of stolen medical research that was perfectly dramatic, if wrapped up a little quickly, this was a ride I didn’t want to get off.

A Thing Called Truth is a sapphic road trip adventure mixed with a little evil corporate scientists doing bad things thrown in for fun. Mag is a scientist married to her work, who’s been unceremoniously fired right as her life changing research is about to be finished. Dorian recently lost her brother and is determined to complete his bucket list for him. The two come together for one wild ride, finding themselves and love along the way.
The art is perfect for the story - very superhero inspired without being cheesy. Mag and Dorian have some rocky patches, but their dynamic is fun and playful from the beginning, and they make a well-balanced team. I appreciated how seamlessly the difficult backstories were woven into the story and helped developed the characters in a natural way. Although the premise of an evil corporation taking Mag’s research could have been out of place, it’s actually nicely interconnected though Mag’s other relationships and circles back to Mag’s story through a series of antics. This graphic novel doesn’t take itself too seriously, while at the same time addressing some hard topics in an easy to swallow way.
If you’re looking for a wild ride, romance, and evil butt kicking all in one, this story is for you.
I think going into this with as little information as possible is the best way to consume this story, so I will keep this brief: this was so damn good. Cried at the end which solidified the 5 stars for me, this was everything I love: queer people, road trip, angst, stress—main emotion the entire time lowkey, butch lesbian, hope for a better world, …. And oh my god we’re the graphic so satisfying, the colour used in the very best way. Truly I have no notes; all the characters had dept, I was surprised multiple time by the story, I laughed, I cried, I have a newfound hope in the world. How they managed to pack all that in a 300 pages graphic novel is so very impressive to me, I love when people are good at their craft.
Basically, definitely recommend, expect if you’re boring and jaded and hate queer people, in which case you will Hate that book. AH. Man I truly had a wonderful time, I wish I could experience this story for the first time again.
“And I will be strong and brave and crazy and romantic and free.
And I won’t care if it will be
embarrassing or dangerous.”
“Because at that point nothing
will scare me anymore.”
These lines hit so much
As someone who is in STEM, fixating on just one thing and forgetting to live has been an issue for me and the way the doc comes out of her shell with the help of Dorian and how they just LIVE was beautiful and they way they authors presented the journey was captivating and makes one yearn for a trip like that in real life but also feel as if though you lived it in the novel.
“What if someone someday made her notice the way I look at her”
Initially I was engulfed because of the trip and just both the characters letting go; but the way that Mag and Dorian fall in love is just adorable and the Isabella and Yang development was a welcomed bonus!
Overall the story development was delightful, the graphics were bold, intricate and they popped out in all the best ways!
LOVED IT!
Would recommend!!
