A Fascinating Reach Into The PastBy Keith Wayne McCoy on May 22, 2015This is a fascinating reach into the past, an increasingly distant past as time goes on and crewmembers succumb to age. This fact alone makes "Adventures on the Queen Mary" a must-have for not only fans of the great liner but history as a whole. With superb snapshots (some of which this QM fan has never seen) and a detailed account of life on board, Wooders and Radford bring a rare, intimate visage to youth, transatlantic travel, and the great Queen herself. Both a feast for the eyes and mind, I highly recommend this read for anyone interested in not only the liner but a lingering sense of the excitement of marching forth into adulthood. .Comment Was this review helpful to you? Highly recommended read, great visuals, a unique view point telling a personal story of this great ship.By jonathan Quayle on May 21, 2015A wonderfully detailed account of life abord the legendary Queen Mary, brilliantly recounted from the story of an original crew member of the ship during her halcyon days of the1950's & 60's. The books author captures the spirit, feel and look of the time, beautifully fleshed out with many stunning rare and unseen pictures that makes this book stand above the standard history books on the subject. Highly recommended.

Author Bios:

As a kid in the early 1970s, James Radford became infatuated with the Queen Mary after seeing the ship in the classic disaster movie “The Poseidon Adventure”. After graduating from Freed-Hardeman University with a B.A. in Communications, Radford moved to Los Angeles, CA, where his love affair took a step forward with the serendipitous docking of the Queen Mary in nearby Long Beach. A member of the Screen Actors Guild, Radford has appeared in a variety of commercials and been a consultant for 20th Century Fox’s 2006 special edition DVD release of “The Poseidon Adventure”. In addition to his newest offering, Adventures on the Queen Mary, co-created with David Wooders, Radford is also the author of the children’s book The ABCs of the Queen Mary, which has been available on board the Queen Mary since 2004. This past summer, Radford experienced the voyage of a lifetime – sailing two back-to-back, trans-Atlantic crossings on the Queen Mary II with noted maritime collector, Johnathan Quayle.

Growing up in Southampton, England, Dave Wooders was always enamored with the ocean liners he saw pulling in and out of port. In 1957, shortly after turning 16, he left school to begin work as a bellboy on the famous ocean liner Queen Mary. After Wooders finished his last contract with Cunard, he went on to work as a paramedic for the next thirty years and then spent the following decade as a medic instructor at the Hampshire Police Training College. Wooders currently resides in Southampton with his wife, Beryl, where he still enjoys telling people about his unforgettable time at sea aboard the Queen Mary.

I was excited to see this book available on Netgalley. I have seen quite a few programs on the Queen Mary and find the ship's history fascinating. I could not wait to read a first hand account from a crew member. What I liked best about this book is it is told by someone who worked on the ship when they were a teenager. From beginning to end, this book was entertaining. The photographs and other images were excellent and helped me truly see the ship as it was.

I gave the book only four stars because at times it became a little dry, but I would gladly recommend it to anyone wanting a different viewpoint on this landmark.

Adventures On The Queen Mary is a memoir about working on the RMS Queen Mary as a teenager. Dave Wooders joined the crew in June 1957 and worked on board her until 1959. This book is a collection of stories written down by Dave Wooders and loosely organized by James Radford. It reads like an older relative reminiscing about his fondest memories at a family gathering.

We're told about his various jobs (mostly as bellboy and commus waiter) and about the Queen Mary itself but also about the famous people he met and what the crew did in their free time. We're told about the things they did on board and on shore leave for entertainment, the clothing they bought, the things they brought back home to England from America, dating while being gone from his girlfriend so often, and what storms at sea were like. There were many interesting photographs of the RMS Queen Mary (inside and out) and of Dave Wooders (when on the crew and more recently).

He also talked about his other sea-going jobs and briefly about his life after he quit in Oct. 1961. He also made some trips to visit the Queen Mary after she was retired and made into a hotel. There was a reunion held on board, then he took his wife to see it, and then his sons. Some of the stories told earlier were retold in full here as he showed people the spot where the story happened. Dave Wooders' fondness for the ship and excitement of being at sea shine through in the stories. Overall, I'd recommend this book to those interested in what working on the RMS Queen Mary (and other ocean liners) was like.

Very wonderful and well written book. Not only does it have the wonderful memories of Dave Wooders who was a crew member as a young man. It is well written to the point I can visual exactly what he is talking about. Also he shared some of the most interesting memories and photos even. The photos alone are worth reading this book but his memory makes it a great book to read! I highly recommend it.
