Description
Brussels in the late summer of 2024: Inspector Marcel Vermeylen receives an unusual visitor – the notary Dominique de Lasteyrie hands him a letter from the English tabloid journalist Trevor Chesterfield, who has died under mysterious circumstances. Marcel discovers that Trevor had been blackmailing numerous members of the Brussels establishment, threatening to reveal their juicy secrets. At first, the inspector doesn't know where to start with these ‘Spicy Files’ - there are countless suspects, and they all have a lot to lose. What's more, his stuffy superior has little desire to burn his fingers on a highly explosive case and wants to hand the matter over to state security. The rebellious inspector decides to investigate on his own. A race against time starts that leads Marcel deeper and deeper into the Brussels quagmire of vanity and cover-ups. And not least into his country's past.
‘Spicy Files’ is the first volume in the crime series about the shrewd Brussels inspector Marcel Vermeylen.

Spicy Files is a smart, fast-moving crime novel that blends political intrigue with investigative suspense. Set in Brussels, the story feels timely and relevant, especially in how it explores power, secrecy, and the consequences of hidden information. The setting adds a strong atmospheric layer and helps the book stand out from more familiar crime backdrops.
The plot is well structured and keeps the tension steady, with enough twists to hold interest without becoming confusing. I appreciated the attention to detail and the procedural elements, which made the investigation feel grounded and believable. While some sections moved a bit slower than others, the payoff was satisfying and well earned.
Overall, this is an engaging and thoughtful crime novel that will appeal to readers who enjoy politically charged mysteries with an international feel. I’d recommend it to fans of European crime fiction and investigative thrillers.
