I received an ARC for my honest review. And whew boy! What. A. Book! I was immediately enraptured by this story and I didn't want to put it down. We first meet Athena when she is running late. There are repercussions for being late and Athena knows this. Say what?! My thoughts exactly. This is where I needed to know more...

This book was a delicious mindbender. Wow. I thought I knew what was up but at times it was clear the reader doesn't have a clue. This book is fast paced with twists and turns that aren't seen immediately. One of the characters endeared himself to me and I could tell something was different about him. I wanted him to be who Athena wanted in her life. I didn't want the story to end but when it did... Wowza! I'm curious to know if there will be another book to come.

I highly recommend this book. While things aren't all they appear, it is also a book about hope. Be sure to add this to your TBR list!

Tara Sue Me’s name is synonymous with erotica with a darker edge and bdsm, and while Obscured falls under the ‘dark’ genre as it deals with human trafficking/prostitution it isn’t erotica. This story falls more under the suspense/thriller side of things with some romance thrown in but by the time I realized that I was dealing with a different beast I was hooked and didn’t mind the change of pace at all because I needed to know if I had guessed right about the various characters motives that we meet in the story.

This was one of those books where I was more interested in the overall story and how things would play out than the actual main character, Athena. I empathized with her and her situation, especially after finding out how she was lured into being a prostitute and the repercussions that she’d have to face if she didn’t tow the line, but some of the choices she made drove me bat shit crazy and had me muttering “Don’t do it. Don’t do it...you did it.” then doing the heavy sigh thing and watching as the fall out happened. As for the other players in this story. One is absolutely shady, no question about it, but the other two? I gotta say that the author did a great job at making it difficult to get a true read on them and what their game was. I will say that at least my instincts about them were correct, in a general sense, but the specifics did end up surprising me.

It seems a bit redundant to say that I enjoyed the writing since I’ve already said I got hooked on the story, but I am. The twists and turns were done well, the writing was clean and though it does fall under 200 pages I didn’t feel as if the plot or characters were cheated out of anything, including what ends up happening to them in the end, though there is one surprise that I am hoping may get a novella or something similar so we can see just how THAT came to be.

The Bottom Line: This was a quick, well written book that kept me turning the pages until the very end.

My thoughts:
With Obscured, I wasn't sure if I was going to get a story that I liked. The story involves Athena who was tricked into becoming a high-end prostitute for Mike when she was 16. 10 years later, she is trapped and can't find a way out, even though she has tried a few times. When she runs into a childhood friend, it seems that she may have way out. She just doesn't know who she can trust.

I was pleasantly surprised as to how much I liked this book. I definitely didn't think I would end up liking the main characters, Athena. Her story isn't pretty and at times made me uncomfortable. But, despite her lifestyle and choices in life, I thought she was incredibly strong and was someone I was rooting for to end up with a different life. This book is also a hard one to review without giving away key plot points. Let's just say things aren't always what they seem. There was a big twist that gave the story a satisfying ending. I thought it was incredibly sweet. I defiantly recommend Obscured. It was a quick read and one that sucked me right in. -Kari

unique story. Good plot.

This is my first book by Tara Sue Me and I really enjoyed it.

The story is about Athena. Athena was tricked into life she doesn’t want 10 years ago and now she is struggling to find an escape. However when a face from her past reappears she finally feels that she might have a chance to move away and escape her the pimp. Isaiah re-enters Athena’s life at a time when she needs to move. He’s now a pastor surely he will be able to her help her escape.

What I loved about this story was it wasn’t your typical romance novel, it’s also got suspense and lots of twists and turns throughout the story. The author really leaves you guessing till near the end who will actually help Athena and who she will get her HEA with. I thought the way the plot played was very clever and I never actually saw the twist that the author threw in coming. I loved Athena despite being tricked into the lifestyle she is currently living she doesn’t let it defeat her. She is a strong character, looking for a way and not knowing who she can trust when everyone in her life either seems to let her down.

Although there is no mention of this being a series it is left open at the end for the story to continue but I would also say this could be read as a standalone.

Overall a great read and I hope to look forward to reading more of the author’s books.

In this non-conventional romance, Tara Sue Me (writing as Cat Waters) enthralls her readers in her latest novel which is aptly titled Obscured, as she takes them down a tale of where secrets, passions, hate and secrets are obscured and blurred. A tale where the truth is hard to perceive.Obscured is not your standard romance and takes more of the undertones of suspense and intrigue. As readers are invested into the story, Tara Sue Me bewitches her readers as they are taken on a whirlwind as they must decide where does the truth begin and end.

At the age of 16, Athena is left to fend for her own when her mother passed away and her grief-stricken father disappears. As she makes her way to Las Vegas to take a shot at being a dancer, she finds out why Las Vegas is called Sin City. When Athena meets Mike, she was easily charmed by his personality and his caring nature. But little did she know, Mike will destroy her emotionally and physically as he makes him his whore. Forced into prostitution, the once little innocent country girl is now a call girl to one of the most feared men in Las Vegas. Ten years has passed and Athena is still a prostitute. With little money and education, Athena craves a new life especially how Mike treats her like a dog that needs to obey on command. So when she runs into her former childhood friend, Isaiah, who happens to be a pastor, Athena yearns for his kindness and affection. She sees Isaiah as possibly the only man who has treated her as a human being. When Athena finally decided to escape from Mike and gets help from Isaiah, will this be her chance for a new life? Or will she realize that things are not always how you perceive? Will Athena's rush decision for freedom be obscured with the realization that the least person she expected to help her might be the one to save her?

"Because you are many, many things, but broken isn't one of them."

Obscured is definitely a book that is more of a suspense thriller than romance. If you are expecting hearts and flowers and then I am sad to inform you this book is not your typical standard romance. There is no perfect hero or heroine in this book. Everyone is flawed and a bit mysterious which in tale helps readers to get bewitched as truths begins to get unfolded. I did enjoy the surprising twist of events that Tara Sue Me laid out throughout the book. Overall, if you are looking for a book that reminds us all that appearances can be deceptive then I recommend you give Obscured a try.

This book is one crazy ride. And nothing like I thought it would be when I started reading.

Athena is trapped in a dark cycle that repeated itself every day for ten years. When a friend from the past stumbles upon Athena's world of darkness turns to danger. Trust in not something she can afford to give. The lines of friend and foe cross leaving confusion in its wake. And yet this woman finds the strength and courage to keep fighting a battle that shatters her heart and hopes.

I was truly amazed at not only this story, the depth of the writing is amazing. The flashback with current happening put the reader in tune with Athena. Emotional, heart breaking and raw. This one was truly heart clenching. I felt the despair, hope and pain. And loved the real heart felt passion that comes through in the end. A great raw story.

Obscured is a book written by bestselling author Tara Sue Me using the pseudonym Cat Waters and one that I would classify under the romantic suspense genre. The fact that there are unresolved issues and that it does end in a cliffhanger give greater credence to my theory that this is just the first in a series, because if it isn't that Tara Sue Me is evil for leaving us with that cliffy! The blurb alone had me hooked but the story so didn't go where I thought it was going a couple of times and I'm always one for surprises in books.

Athena Hamilton is a heroine that doesn't make excuses for her mistakes and misjudgments, owning up to them and simply explaining the circumstances surrounding her choices and decisions. Her strength and confidence wavers at times, but there's no doubting that she wants better for herself and while leaving her life may seem like a lofty goal, she adjusted to her new life at sixteen and learned to survive. Men want her for her body and the fantasy she provides but all she wants is to be seen as a person and not a commodity.

Aside from Athena, this story has a pretty strong case of supporting characters, two of whom are much more than they may seem. Of course, I'm not going to go into details because then that spoils the whole thing for those who haven't read the book yet. Suffice it to say that old adage of never judging a book by its cover rings true here. This was a book that surprised the heck out of me and I'm looking forward to the sequel to see what life has in store for Athena and the other characters of Obscured. This gets 4.5 stars. ♥

Boy, this book will be hard to review without spoiling anything.

At the age of 16, Athena found herself abandoned and completely alone when her father left her to fend for herself after her mother's death. With nothing but a few hundred dollars in der pockets, she left for Las Vegas in the hopes of becoming a show girl, but ended up in the hands of charming mogul Mike Randolph instead. It didn't take her long to realize that Mike wasn't her savior, but her biggest nightmare.
Now, almost ten years later, Athena is a prostitute and still under tight control of Mike and his second in command, Harris. She's given up on her dream of freedom a long time ago, but is reminded of the life she could have lead when one day she quite literally stumbles into her childhood friend, Isaiah. Now a pastor, kind-hearted and pure, he represents everything she wants yet can't have.
But when Athena finally decides it's time she stand up for herself, all hell breaks loose.
This is the painful story of a woman who made one bad choice in her life she can't seem to live down, but isn't quite willing to give up fighting yet. Will she get the chance to escape her fate? Or will she die trying?

This is a gritty, romantic suspense thriller, full of secrets, deceptions and surprise twists. We never know who to trust, who will betray us (yes, us!) next, and who is our real enemy out there.
I really enjoyed this book, though 'enjoy' may be the wrong word. I was engrossed and hardly able to put it down. With only 172 pages, it was a quick read, but I'm impressed by how much content the author was able to squeeze in such a short novel without overwhelming me with information.

I had two issues with this book, though:
One, I didn't like the flashbacks. I'm not big on flackbacks in generel, but usually, I don't mind them too much. What annoyed me in this book was that they didn't always get a seperate chapter but were just integrated in present scenes, which disrupted the flow for me.
Also, I would have wanted a different ending. It wasn't the cliffhanger that bothered me, but the pace of the last 15% or so. I was waiting for some kind of final showdown that never came.

Although this book is rather dark, and abuse is being mentioned, we do not get to read detailed graphic violence or sex with the tricks.

Recommended!

I have read Tara's Submissive Series and I love it but I knew this book would be completely different and it was. I also read the short story, Altered Allies written under Cat Waters and thought it was an awesome short. Cat Waters really is like reading a whole new author. Anyway....lets get to the review.

Athena grew up in a small town but at the age of 16 she ended up in Las Vegas alone. It's been ten years and it hasn't been easy but she is a survivor. She has been working as a prostitute for a very powerful man and he owns her. She was lost when she came to Sin City and he was older and polished, he vowed to help her but it was a trap. He turned her into one of his whores, as he likes to call her. He makes every decision in her life, down to what color is best suited for her. She hates it and wants out but how? She has tried and failed more than once but someone from her past has come into her present...

Isaiah was the last person Athena thought she would run into in Vegas. She hasn't seen him since she was a young teenager and he was even her first kiss. She didn't want to mix her present with her past but he was here and she didn't trust many people because of her job but Isaiah is now a pastor and old friend. He wants to help protect her but can he really be trusted? She really wants to believe in him.

Athena doesn't know what's next but she wants out of this world she has been stuck in for the past ten years but who can she trust? There is Isaiah the pastor, Harris the hitchman to her pimp and her best friend, Vicki.

This story is full of twists and turns. The characters were pretty awesome. Athena is strong, fun and loves reading. The men all have different personalities but I have my favorite.

I read it in one day and I have a feeling it's not the end of the story :-)

Quotes:

“Oh, dear. I thought I’d taught you. There is no before. And there is no later unless I allow it. You only get now.”

“Shhh. Let me do this. You can tell me to stop at any time and I will.”

"Maybe I'm just surviving my bad decisions."

Obscured is a very fitting title for this book. It's going to be hard to review this book without spoiling anything, so hopefull I can accomplish that feat.

Growing up in a small town, Athena was almost sheltered in comparison to later life. Leaving the small town in the hopes of finding a better place for her sick mother kicks off the first kick to her life. Athena, left alone at a young age, finds herself doing things she didn't think she would do for people she doesn't like. But its work, and keeps her alive and she's stuck in it. One day, on her way to see a client, Athena runs into the last person she'd expect to see in Vegas, a boy from her past. Even more surprising to her is learning he's a pastor now.

Isaiah finds himself in Vegas to open a new church and comes across Athena, a girl from his past. But he's not quite what he seems.

Obscured takes us on a topsy turvy story, with some expected and other unexpected turns in the road. I loved that I wasn't sure who to trust or what was coming next. The characters are top notch, Athena, though struggling is a strong female who knows what she wants even when she's unsure how to achieve it. The men in the book, Isaiah, Mark, and Harris all mean different things to Athena and each have thier own unique personality.

This story is a wild and thrilling ride that pulls you in many directions, leaves your breathless wondering what just happened, and curious what is to come. There are lessons to be learned in this book though, and struggles that shine through how decisions reverberate and affect our lives for a long time. There was a large growth for Athena in the story going from the token whipping girl to a woman determined to stand up for herself for once.

I loved that there was so much packed into this story, none of it felt out of place though or overwhelming, it all twisted and melded and brought different twists to the story and changed my thoughts page to page.

Obscured is the perfect title for this book, because that is how I felt as well. At the young age of 16, Athena is left on her own. She heads to Vegas to become and dancer and falls into a world of prostitution. Now 10 years later she wants out, she meets a childhood friend, Isaiah, who is now a Pastor. Athena is hoping Isaiah might be able to help her but the lines between good and evil are always Obscured. Plenty of twists and turns, the story is fast paced with plenty of steam and the characters were excellent. An Excellent Read!

This book was full of twists and turns. You can't trust anyone. No one is who they say they are. I can't quit put my finger on why this book is different from the others. But its definitely a book to read

o.m.g.

Obscured is twists and turns, suspense and secrets, lined in sex. This was nothing of what I expected but everything that I loved.

This story throws you directly into the underbelly of Vegas that no one wants to talk about – Athena is a prostitute. She’s fallen prey to a man who she believed she loved and trusted; a man who betrayed that trust by pimping her out and who keeps control by roughing her up. She’s been in this world for ten years and she’s not sure if she could get out even if she wanted to.
Athena has a problem with not knowing who to trust. She knows she can’t trust her pimp, but that’s all she knows. When things start to take a turn for the worst, she runs to the only person she thinks she can trust: Isaiah. He’s her childhood friend, her first kiss, and a pastor. He can keep her safe – right?
Tara has a way of writing a story that’s honest and real, making you connect with the characters while revealing just enough pieces to give you a complete mindfuck. I was fighting for Athena’s HEA but I didn’t know quite who I was fighting for her to end up with. Tara also deals with Athena’s issues with sex in such a perfect and respectful and believable way. But when she does have sex her way – OHMYGOD.
Obscured will twist your thoughts and flip your heart. Get ready for a wild ride through the darkness of Vegas, while you fight for Athena’s bright future. LOVED. 5 stars!

BOOK REVIEW: 3,5 STARS

Obscured was a big surprise for me. At first, I thought it was going to have lots of erotica, which is what Tara normally writes, but then I read one interview with her about why she changed her name for this book, so I knew I wasn’t going to get any erotica at all, but instead a suspense book, which is not my favorite genre.

So, I started reading. At first, I was kinda bored. There was so much happening but at the same time it didn't happen much. I wasn’t completely connected with the story or the characters, so I blamed the book hangover I had at the moment, and I put the book on hold. A few days later I resumed reading, but it was more of the same. I was sure I wasn’t enjoying the book. But, when I hit 60% awesome things started happening and I was finally hooked! I ended up loving how this book concluded and despite this genre isn’t completely my thing, I’d totally read the next book, because there HAS to be a second book. Not that Obscured ended in a cliffhanger, but I assure you, there has to be a second book.

“I’ve never gotten flowers before.”
I can’t stop looking at them.
“The white means ‘take a chance on happiness,’ and the blue means ‘watchfulness.’”

So, this book is about Athena, a prostitute who is abused and over-abused by her pimp, Mike. Athena has been a hooker for 10 years and she doesn’t know anything else in her life. She didn’t finish high school, she only had one friend and she was afraid the moment she makes a mistake, Mike might kill her. But when she encountered with her old friend from her childhood, Isaiah, she started wondering… What if her life were normal... What if she would have stayed in her hometown instead of going to Vegas… What if she ended up married with Isaiah… What if… What if… What if… To find out how her messed up life changes, read Obscured.

When I open my eyes, I am once more the woman I was before running into Isaiah. I am Athena and I am a prostitute. This is my life, and a coincidental meeting in a hotel lobby hasn’t changed that.

Like I said before, there was a twist of events that got my complete attention to this book. When I thought there was no hope for Athena, she found a guardian angel in the least expected character, which I totally loved. I was as surprised as Athena, and I ended up loving what happened.

“Do you want to live?”
His question knocks the wind out of me. “Yes.”
“Then I need you to do the hardest thing you’ve ever done. I need you to trust me.”

I like how Tara managed to write the abusive subject in this book. It was so implicit all over the pages, but the descriptions were never disgusting at all. If it would have been the case, I wouldn't have ended this book, because seriously, the way Mike trated Athena was horrible. UGH!

Overall, I give 3,5 stars to this book because it was very nicely written, the characters were well developed and the twist of events on the second half were amazing.

Review to be posted on oct 24.

Oh wow! I don't know where to start and what to say with this story. Between forced prostition and her old life clashing with her current dire life, Athena is ready to take her life back. Deception and lies is what her life has become. I love the twists and turns and the unknown throughout this book.

This book is written with such intrigue and uniqueness. I was skeptical at first after reading the blurb. I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say I was more than pleased with this story. Between Athena being such a strong woman and the supporting characters playing their parts, there isn't much to not love about this story.

If you are looking for a book that will leave you satisfied and intrigued, this is definitely a book for you. This book will fulfill your hunger for suspense, love, denial and betrayal!

I loved everything that Tara Sue Me has written so I was intrigued by her latest book which has written under a pen name Cat Winters. This has her signature all over it but it far from the books we have come to know with this author. To say the least this not the norm for this author and is non conventional to say the least. I was sitting and reading waiting for the story that I had to come to expect. However the story I got was anything but and left me wondering what I had read in a good way. It one of those books that leaves you surprised and want to question the book and the world that you read.

Obscured definitely does lives up to the name giving us a tale that make you sit up and take a notice. A world of where things are hidden in order to maintain appearances. Where things are blurred and everything is not what it seems. Sue Me/Winters deliver a story that leave you devouring every word wondering what earth has she thrown us into.
Athena set off for Vegas at the age of 16 in the hopes of becoming a dancer after her mother died and her father disappeared. In the hopes of making a life for herself . Instead she discover the seedy side of Vegas and learned up close and personal why it called Sin City. Thanks to Mike her boss/pimp who charmed the vulnerable sixteen year old and destroyed her. Now she is a call girl for Mike, a revered man for all the wrong reasons and the past ten years have been hell.

He may have destroyed her but she still has a glimmer a hope craving a new life despite barely having a nothing and Mike treating her like dirty. He rules her life, she caters to his every whim. Then she has another glimmer when out of the blue, she runs into a man who can be her saviour. Isaiah , the boy she grew up with and happens to be a pastor. He has a responsibility to help her and he is exact man she needs. One who doesn’t see her as how Mike and his world see her’s , a call girl. Isaiah sees her as human being, but just simply seeing her as that is enough to trust?

However this only the beginning and if she going to escape she needs the right opportunity and the suspense is building. Mike has his claws into her and whilst she hopes for new life. Is this going to be chance, or Athena is looking at the world with rose tinted glasses. Unaware what is really going on.

Whilst this departure as I mentioned before. I enjoy this book, it not what I expected and was focused on suspense rather than the romance. I like the new direction that Sue Me/Winter took with this book. A remind of what the world is really like and how things aren’t always what they seem. If you are looking for a book suspense first with massive twist and turns then the romance, you need to try the latest book from this author.

The story is about Athena, a Vegas prostitute. She got into the life at 16 and 10 years later she regrets that decision every day. When she runs into someone from her pre Vegas life, she starts to think about what her life could be like without Mike, her pimp. Harris, Mike's second in command, is always watching. His offers to help her or to run away with her, always make her think Mike's testing her loyalty. When she starts to develop feelings for Harris her world gets turned upside down. Mike is NOT a nice man! Things aren't always as they seem and don't EVER judge a book by its cover.

Great story with lots of unexpected things happening. The characters were fantastic! I really felt her anxiety and helplessness, especially after the storage building scene. The story progression was on point. There was a lot of story to be told for the amount of pages. Awesome writing! This is my first book by this author and I can't wait for the next.

This book is truly amazing. I have read other books by Tara Sue Me and i always keep an eye out for new books by her so when i saw this book i had to read it. It is a different style of writing to all her others, this one is not your average erotic book, it is darker with more suspense and a bit of romance thrown in too, it just shows what a truly brilliant writer she is. I could not put the book down. Brilliant plot, fantastic characters and a lot of twists and turns. Some books just stay with you, and this is one of those books. Loved it. Thank you so much to the publishers and Netgalley for letting me read this book to review.

Wow!! Hard to say much else! Not your typical story written by Tara Sue Me so I understand why she chose to do a new pen name. This story was amazing, non-conventional. Athena ends up being a prostitute in Las Vegas at the age of 16 after her mother dies. The story is mostly about 10 years later. I love how she's a fighter and stand up for herself. This is a fairly short read. Not typical book length but not novella length either. Just right for a good suspenseful read! I'm looking forward to more under this pen name!

This was an amazingly written book and one of the most gut-wrenching, raw stories I've ever read.

Athena Hamilton is a prostitute. After arriving in Las Vegas as a troubled teen and having no one to turn to, she meets Mike. Mike is a successful, charismatic man and Athena believes she's found her Mr. Right. Unfortunately, Mike preys on the young Athena and forces her into a life of prostitution.

Ten years later, Athena is on her way to a meeting with a client when she unexpectedly bumps into her childhood friend, Isaiah. Isaiah is a pastor and starting a new church in Vegas, but is unknowingly in business negotiations with Mike. Once Athena encounters Isaiah a couple of times, she realizes that she misses the girl she was and needs to get out of that life. However, Mike has his claws in deep and isn't going to let Athena go so easily. I don't want to spoil the rest of the story, but Athena gets help from an unlikely ally and I was thrilled that she got her HEA. She had dealt with so much horror and heartache...I couldn't be happier that she survived and found true happiness.

I will warn you that this book does end on a slight cliffhanger. There are two secondary characters and I would love to find out what happens to them, so hopefully the author will continue the story.

Overall, this book was beautifully written and I couldn't put it down.

When Athena Hamilton first arrived in Las Vegas she was a sixteen year old girl abandoned by a grief stricken father and in need of a way to support herself. She tries her hand at being a showgirl. What’s so hard about that, right? All she would have to do is dance a little and wear pretty outfits … right? What happens when Athena can’t make the cut and there’s a predator sitting in the wings waiting for his next victim. Athena takes the reader's heart with her as she tries to survive Vegas and break free from her abusive pimp. The story delves into the underworld of Vegas’ sex trafficking trade. Obscured gives the basic anatomy of how ‘certain’ young women are preyed on, how they’re drawn in and finally used by pimps/predators. The emotion the story stirs lingers, but the heroine is able to retain this naivety … this sort of youthful innocence that has stayed with her even after 10 years in the game. Personally, I wanted to reach through the pages and shake her a bit for being so silly, trusting or selectively blind. The book is considered a romance but it is a very unconventional one. For those looking for a full ‘minute by minute’ bedroom romp, then you will be disappointed here. Then again, I am happy that the author excluded some of these elements because of the subject matter of human trafficking and prostitution.

There isn't the goofy eyed hero or any recognizable hero that the reader can pick out from the beginning. With its characters, Obscured deals in shades of gray with the exception of Mike (Mike ‘the pimp’ clearly has on a pair of gasoline underwear headed straight to hiffle). For example, the pastor who could have been a clear path to freedom. Isaiah Martin (the pastor and childhood friend) would have made an unusual romantic hero but a feasible one considering the life the heroine is leading. With Isaiah, his gray areas begin to show almost immediately and his innocence is just a mask to cover the devil within. His character sets off mini alarms because at times he’s just too good to be true.

Then there is Harris (the ‘sheep’ hiding in wolf’s clothing), the henchman … the hero that as a reader I didn't really see coming. Like Isaiah, Harris’ character had many gray areas but it was hard to dislike his character (even as a supposed bad guy). Thankfully, Harris fits the role of a traditional romantic figure (you know the bad guy turning good to save the girl). So, picturing him taking the road to salvation and freedom with Athena isn't hard.

The most gripping portion of this story is the evolution of Athena’s character after her captivity. The simplest of things that most take for granted are all new experiences for her. Overall rating for Obscured is 4.0.

I don't know where to start and what to say with this story. Between forced prostitution and her old life clashing with her current dire life, Athena is ready to take her life back.

This book will fulfill your need for suspense, love, denial and betrayal!
