Description
From the master of spine-tingling horror for young audiences, A Nightmare on Nightmare Street is full of strange sounds, terrifying visions, and things that go bump in the night.
Twelve-year-old Joe Ferber, his sister Sadie, and their parents have just moved into a house that has all the hallmarks of a horror movie—tombstones in the basement, a creepy doll lying around, strange noises in the wall, and so on. As Joe tries to fall asleep on the first night, his nightlight begins to flash and change colors, and the creepy doll appears in his bed … and then twelve-year-old Shawn Hannigan wakes up from a dream.
Shawn and his little sister, Addie, are seemingly living in the same house with their mother. But when they arrive at their new school for the first day, the teachers are all wearing animal masks, and the principal’s office is pitch black and full of noises. At the end of the day, a stranger claiming to be Shawn’s mom picks him up and tells him he doesn’t have a sister …
As more and more strange things happen to each of them, Shawn and Joe have to figure out what is real, and what is a nightmare …

I have not read a new R.L. Stine book in years so the nostalgia that hit me when I started this book whisked me back to simpler times. If you remember the goosebump series, then pick this one up for the mash-up of familiar themes.
Yes, it's a middle-grade book and yes I still loved all the campiness which seems to permeate R.L. Stine's works. Even though middle-schoolers have access to more technology and information via the internet and social media, there is still something kind of creepy about a doll and a haunted house, and people wearing masks.
Is it a horror? No, at least not at this point in my life, but was it fun and able to give me fun-house vibes. It's a bit silly, and a bit quirky, but I am glad I picked it up. I didn't need it to be a Stephen King book, I NEEDED it to be an R.L. Stine book and it absolutely was. He was on my reading list before I knew who King was, so one could say his books in conjunction with the Are you Afraid of the Dark TV show, were my first forays into the spooky world of ghosts, vampires, haunted houses, and so much more.
Reading Nightmare on Nightmare Street with my 7-year-old was such a full-circle moment. I grew up on R.L. Stine, and getting to share that same spooky fun with her now that she’s reading on her own felt really special.
This book leans into everything that makes Goosebumps great — fast chapters, creepy twists, and that perfect “scary but safe” tone for younger readers. The nostalgia factor is huge, especially with classic characters coming to life, but it still totally works for kids experiencing this world for the first time.
My daughter was hooked and kept wanting “just one more chapter,” which is always the best sign. It’s a great confidence booster for new readers and a fun read-aloud if you want to experience it together.
If you grew up loving Goosebumps, this one feels like coming home, and sharing it with your child makes it even better. We loved it!
The storytelling gave me nostalgic vibes from my childhood, bringing back memories of reading Goosebumps books. It's refreshing to read from kids' POVs once in a while as an adult, and I love how this author, despite being far from childhood, continues to deliver amazing books. The quartet of characters in this story endured some spooky happenings as they tried to puzzle out the bizarre occurrences in their lives since moving to Nightmare Street. Thank you, Blackstone Publishing, for the gifted ebook.

Nightmare on Nightmare Street is absolutely classic R.L. Stine in all the best ways. Written in the same style as the classic Goosebumps books, it is perfect for children's horror. There were many nods to the original Goosebumps books that it was hit right in the nostalgia, it was almost a game trying to remember all the different references. Great for kids looking for a fun scary story and also adults who grew up with Goosebumps.
