Description
Seventeen-year-old Deenu can’t read or write—but he has a story the world needs to hear. Dictated aloud to his friend Sanju, a university student, and addressed as an open letter to India’s Prime Minister, Deenu’s extraordinary journey unfolds.
Abandoned at birth and raised in an orphanage near Haridwar, Deenu’s life takes a dark turn at fifteen when he is kidnapped by a child-trafficking gang. Groomed in the art of pickpocketing and sent to Bengaluru, his world shatters when he discovers his best friend has been murdered by their handlers. Fleeing to Kolkata with a stolen photo—unaware of its power as a blackmail tool—he tries to rebuild his life as a lone pickpocket.
But fate has more in store. A stolen wallet, a decades-old love letter, and a trail that leads to an elderly woman in a care home set Deenu on an unexpected mission of the heart. As he helps reunite two long-lost lovers, danger closes in. Vikram, the ruthless trafficker, is hunting him—and he won’t stop until he gets what he wants.
When violence strikes close to home, Deenu is forced to make a life-or-death decision. What follows is a gripping tale of survival, redemption, love, and justice—told through the voice of a boy who once had nothing but his story.

you are running with shortened breath every step of the way in this book. i couldn't help but feel involved and get totally immersed in the tale. it makes you think. it makes you think stronger thoughts around some themes met, anger, sadness and also just wanting to cuddle every human you know. hold them close and make them know how cared for they are. and then for those who dont have that...
it was a really emotional read and i applaud Anil for taking me there from the get go. you want to hold hope but you quickly realise this isn't my romance wish for a happy ever after type read. this will take more to get to the end, much more.
i was rooting for our characters all the way. flawed yes, but so full of bravery heart and determination. and also there was the undertone of wit which i loved.
its very hard to hear stories of others and what the go through. often we dont look again. there is a stat, a number, or a different country. but it could be anyone's son, brother, friend. it could be any one of us but for the difference in chance. it really made me(which i really try to anyway) hold place for others. it made me deeply think over so many things. especially give our current world.
we have just witnessed a mass tragedy in our news. one that could bring most to their knees. i needed an escape so planned to go off and read a book to its end.reading this whilst that was going on really made me ache for a while. but there was also so much strength in this story. so much hope and resilience.
a great read.timely.
