Description
From the NYT bestselling co-author of Illuminae and Aurora Rising comes a high-stakes, high-chemistry sci-fi romp filled with witty banter and clever high jinks about a stowaway girl and the richest boy in the galaxy, racing the clock to outwit a gang of mercenaries.
Eight hours to stop an explosion . . .
Eight hours to fall in love.
It's 2067, and the Graves family has transformed Mars from a lifeless rock into a chaotic patchwork of settlements. You can buy a one-way ticket to a new life - if you're rich.
Enter Hunter Graves: handsome, ambitious, and with spectacularly bad timing. He shows up unannounced at the United Nations base just as an emergency evacuation sends everyone scurrying for safety. And he's left behind. Uh-oh.
Also stranded: Cleo, a sharp-tongued stowaway with no intention of dying today, and even less patience for overconfident trust fund boys. But the enemy of your enemy is the jerk who might just help you survive, so here we are.
Now, Hunter and Cleo have one shot to stop the explosion, escape alive, and deal with the inconvenient fact that they're falling for each other.
The clock is ticking.
A high-octane, high-chemistry, sci-fi adventure from the New York Times bestselling co-author of Illuminae and Aurora Rising.
Perfect for YA readers who love:
- Witty banter and explosive action
- Fast-paced plots with unexpected twists and turns
- An opposites attract odd couple who need each other to survive
- The Illuminae Files or the Aurora Cycle

Cleo is an illegal hitcher on a United Nations base attempting to dodge loan sharks who are after her to pay for her late fathers exorbitant medical bills, Hunter is the rich handsome son of the billionaire capitalists who are colonising space for themselves. Both get trapped on the base when an emergency evacuation happens and their unregistered status means there's no escape pod for them. Soon they realise the evacuation was staged by a criminal faction whose up to god knows what and all Cleo and Hunter have to help them survive is each other.
This was such a fun easy read! Pretty much the only sci-fi books I read are Amie's (and Jay's) and I always enjoy them so much, every time I vow to read more sci-fi after and then never do lol.
Really easy to get into, some fantastic age appropriate commentary on capitalism, class inequality, corrupt corporations etc plus a cute little romance on the side!
Thank you to Allen & Unwin and Netgalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review!

IT WAS SO GOOD TO GO BCK TO SPACE!
I missed the big YA space exploration novels of my youth, and reading Red Star Rebels just reminded me of how timeless it is.
We meet Hunter, spaces richest boy, and our stowaway Cleo as they have 8hrs to escape or 8hrs to fall in love?
This book is such a fun and quick read, I smashed it out in 3hrs and enjoyed every minute of it. Our characters are easy to like and you do really feel that timer ticking down as you read!
It is a bit predictable but that is expected with all that needs to be crammed in the pages. I do think it being a bit longer would have helped.
What happens when Die Hard meets The Martian and you throw in two seventeen year olds from opposite sides of society? Well you get this fast paced YA sci-fi book with a side of romance.
This book is go, go, go. Mars has been inhabited by humans and corporations for a few decades when Cleo becomes a stowaway and an illegal immigrant at the UN’s station, Pax. On the day that rich boy Hunter arrives at Pax, at an alarm goes off starting the evacuation of Pax Station. In an unlikely turn of events, Cleo and Hunter are the only two humans left alone on Pax as a countdown begins….or so they think.
I enjoyed the pace of this book (would make a great movie!) and getting to know both Cleo and Hunter, both with their own flaws but who you come to love.

I LOVED THIS!
I am pretty picky when it comes to YA novels these days but there was no way I was passing up the opportunity to read and review a new Amie Kaufman YA sci-fi story!
This was SO GOOD!
Corruption, a high stakes race against the clock, banter and a bit of romance - this book has it all! I honestly had such a good time reading this book (it also has me needing a re-read of the Illuminae Files asap!)
The main characters were likeable and the story was exciting and fast paced! If you are wanting an entertaining YA sci-fi then I recommend picking this one up!
Thank you so much Netgalley, Allen and Unwin and Amie Kaufman for the opportunity to read this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
YA, action, romance - none of these tags particularly appeal to me, but I trust Amie Kaufman. Good choice me! This was a fun, fast, adventure. It was easy to read and good brain candy. The characters were a little cliched, but not awful.
This is set on a space station just off Mars in the near future. We have two teenagers, one rich, one poor, who are accidently caught up in some big dramas. Of course, they get stuck saving the world while getting distracted by how cute the other is.
If you read the Aurora, Illuminae, or Starbound series, you will like this one. If you haven't, you should! Red Star Rebels stands alone, but a series could be a possibility.
Amie Kaufman.. what do you put in your SciFi novels? Because I just want to devour them. And devour I did.
Red Star Rebels made me feel at home (for my love of the Illuminae files).
Hunter is the billionaire son of capitalists and has found himself stranded when an emergency evacuation has occured. Cleo is an illegal hitcher who hears the SOS call and comes to help. They soon learn that the emergency evacuation is not as it first seemed. It was staged by a criminal group.
Told in alternative points of view this book was go, go, go from page one. You'll find yourself immersed in the story, holding your breath while turning those pages quickly to get to the next chapter. You need to read this book and see for yourself just how great it is.
Thank you to Allen and Unwin and Netgalley for gifting me a copy of the book for my honest book review.
Another space adventure from Amie Kaufman? Yes please!
The year is 2067 and a thriving Mars sees Handsome, rich boy, Hunter Graves, and Cleo, a stowaway, who is running from a past that hasn't been kind to her, left abandoned after the planet has been taken over by a group of mercenaries threatening to blow it all to pieces. They have eight hours to try and save the planet, hatch an escape plan, and try not to fall in love while doing it.
I had so much fun reading this! I always love seeing how people from different backgrounds play off each other, and Cleo's sharp tongue and Hunter's charm were a great combination. The dual POV storyline worked perfectly to help understand the decisions that each of them made. They do start to fall for each other very quickly, but remember, this is YA, and they're in some pretty tense and life threatening situations, so it really didn't bother me too much.
The story drops you straight into the action and doesn't let up for the whole book. The eight hour time frame made for such an edge of your seat experience, and all of the high jinks brought about by Hunter and Cleo were an absolute blast. Sometimes even literally. Ha!
Red Star Rebels is I think at this point set to be a standalone, but I for one wouldn't be complaining if Amie decided to expand on the story. If you've enjoyed any of the authors other sci-fi adventures then you'll love this, but if you're new to the genre then this is a great place to start.
Thanks so much to NetGalley and Allen & Unwin for the review copy.
This was so thoroughly gripping and enjoyable that I binged it in one night. Not going to lie, I couldn’t even sleep once it was done (even at 2am) because I was still thinking about it.
I have no notes except maybe that I wish it wasn’t YA so it could be a little darker, and the main characters could be a bit older so it was a romance between two adults instead. Especially as some of the main characters backstories feels a little unbelievable for a 17/18 year old.
I received a digital ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
