Isobel knows three things for certain: white is the colour of magic, monsters are never as they seem, and on the first day of winter a girl will be claimed by the Bear King as a sacrifice.
The village of Alba has been trading girls for a century, sending them to the island towers and using their bones for magic to keep the cream from spoiling, the water warm in the kettle, and the cold from the threshold.
