Description

The first year of a beaver kit's life is full of new discoveries and dangers. But the most important lesson the kit learns is how to take care of his family's home. The lodge where he lives is protected by a long dam that many beavers have worked to build over the years. As the kit grows up, he helps repair and add to the family dam—and begins to build a life for himself.

Intriguing deep blue and green illustrations introduce the reader to the world of a young beaver growing up in Wood Buffalo National Park in Alberta, Canada, the home to the longest beaver dam. Over the course of a year, the beaver kit learns how to avoid predators, feed himself, repair and build the lodge, and prepare for the winter. Told with the clarity I have come to expect from Sandra Markle, this appealing book provides insight in the the life of beavers and their environment. An author's note at the end as well as additional references are useful for further investigations.
