Description
Discover a world where reality and imagination entwine.
On the cusp of summer, eleven-year-old Cassidy Aoki visits the grandparents she hasn’t seen in six years—elders divided by culture, race, and silence. Her Japanese grandfather still struggles to accept that his son married a Black woman and that Cassidy exists between their worlds.
But in the quiet of her grandparents’ garden, Cassidy uncovers something extraordinary: she can speak to the flowers—and to Kenji, the family dog. Among the blooms, she meets Dower, a magical creature part flower, part dog, and entirely a mirror of her own identity.
As Cassidy learns to navigate love, heritage, and belonging, she must also protect the garden from a greedy developer and confront the biases that have kept her family apart. Meanwhile, her classmates back home face their own lessons in difference and acceptance after a confrontation that challenges their idea of inclusion.
When all paths converge, Cassidy discovers that unity and love bloom strongest in the light of understanding.
Dower is a luminous tale of courage and transformation—where nature, spirit, and the resilience of one young girl remind us that we are all rooted in the same soil.

This is a very sweet and positive way for students to understand the meaning and affects of diversity, inclusion, and equality.
Cassidy is a multi-racial, eleven year old girl who is trying to find her place is scool and life.. Her teacher gives the students an assignment over summer on diversity and inclusion. Cassidy is feeling a little anxious about going to visit her grandparents because her grandfather doesn't seem to like her or her mother.. When they arrive, they are met with their grandfather's coldness. The events that take place over the summer turn into something so grand and unexpected . A wonderful book with a positive message, delightful!

This book was very good! The way that Cassidy was able to learn new things about herself and the things that make her strong, she was also able to teach those around her.. she was able to see that while she felt caught between two worlds, the worlds working together is what would help make things better.
