Description
Unlike animals, human beings seek the meaning of existence. We want to know why we are here, whether life has a purpose, and if so, what it is. The questions emanate from consciousness--the tenant in the mind--an invisible principle of order and coherence present not only in individuals but in societies and the cosmos. Universal consciousness fosters the mind's growth and evolution, just as it impels the cosmos toward higher levels of organization from atoms to galaxies. Its aim is to realize its full potential by increasing its presence in our mind so that we gain awareness of our relatedness to others and an understanding of our place in the universe as one part of a living whole. Yet the process is attended by mistake and error, for the mind tends naturally not only toward order but to disorder, incoherence, self-involvement, and inertia: obstacles which make life a challenging journey of self-discovery. The book focuses on life's meaning as the struggle to attain the highest possible level of consciousness and express it through our behavior. It differs from studies of its kind by representing the mind as a limitless reservoir of possibility, freedom, and creativity; and by drawing its insights from a wide spectrum of disciplines in the belief that all testify to the purpose of consciousness to gain reality through human thought and action.
Advance Praise
"The Tenant in the Mind by Mark Christhilf explores consciousness beyond the biological, presenting it as a universal force shaping identity, ethics, and society. Through an interdisciplinary lens--bridging psychology, philosophy, and cosmology--Christhilf invites readers to view consciousness as a shared journey binding individuals and cosmos alike. Permeating everything from atomic structures to global political systems, consciousness influences all human behavior and individual growth. This book is an inspiring exploration of what it means to be human in an interconnected universe."
-Dr. Sultan Tarlaci, MD, Editor of the Journal of Neurophilosophy
"In this wide-ranging book on human consciousness, Dr. Mark Christhilf, emeritus professor humanities, illuminates the essence and properties of consciousness from its physics and metaphysics to its social, ethical, and political aspects. By broadening our knowledge of what consciousness is and how it operates, The Tenant in the Mind changes one's perception of reality, and leads to a comprehensive understanding of the meaning of life. Weaving together the discoveries and insights of many fields of knowledge, it will prove of value not only to scholars but also to general readers."
-Huping Hu, PhD, Editor of the Journal of Consciousness Exploration and Research
"The question of human consciousness--what it means to exist, to think, to comprehend the external world--has inspired canons of scientific and philosophical scholarship and shaped religious and political formulations throughout history. Yet reconciling these developments with our personal understanding of consciousness can be a daunting and deeply solitary task. Dr. Mark Christhilf's latest book, The Tenant in the Mind: Consciousness and Its Imperatives, deftly navigates between scholarship, history, and lived experience, offering readers a poignant guide to the conscious mind. The structure of the book expands outward. Beginning with the physics and biology of consciousness, Christhilf then turns to the dipolarity of the mind and its construction of identity, before eventually considering it as a mediation between self and others and the individual and sociopolitical order. One of the book's most powerful contributions is that it draws together many disciplines to confront the mystery of consciousness, helping readers achieve self-knowledge as well as an understanding of social and political life. Ultimately, it is Christhilf's ability to sit within the questioning that sets him apart as a writer. Instead of trying to close each section with a forced resolution, he uses questions to gently lead us to the next inquiry. This is dialectical thinking in action, but it also has a reassuring effect on the reader, reminding us that our questions are themselves an aspect of consciousness. For all those who would fathom the working of their mind, this book is a must read."
