Description
There could never be a thirteenth Ledes cousin, not when the Devil himself promised to claim them as his own.
The mist-shrouded town of Galloway needs every ounce of protection from the demons lurking in the Barrens. Harper Ledes longs to escape the cursed village her family rules. As the youngest Ledes cousin, she’s always been an outcast, despite her noble name.
When two militia officers blackmail her into helping them solve a crime, the secret of Harper’s mindspeaking magic is put at risk. Lieutenant Logan Greer’s weapons were stolen from right under his nose, and Captain Jacob Miller will do whatever it takes to help him solve the crime. As Harper gets closer to the Barrens—and the men who threaten her—she realizes her life is intimately entangled with forbidden secrets held in the pines.
Now, Harper must save a town she once wished to abandon, even if it means ripping a hole between realms to do it.
A standalone romantic fantasy inspired by one of America's most infamous folktales. An atmospheric, gothic tribute to the Pine Barrens, the story will appeal to fans of Rachel Gillig and Kristen Ciccarelli.

This book was absolutely fantastic, there were so many plot twists and I saw none of them coming but what a trip it was. I liked Harper, the 12th Ledes Cousin but the only one missing the brand and some of her cousins made sure she felt like she never belonged. Mira in particular was a real piece of work, she needed a good dose of karma. I really felt for her as her mother died in mysterious circumstances when she was born, all she wants to do is escape Galloway until Jacob and Logan hoodwink her into helping them solve the mystery of the missing weapons. I thought Logan was a bit arrogant at the start of the book but he grew on me, he and Harper sniped at each other to hide their growing affection and I loved that. I loved world building in this book, the plot and the pacing and I was so engrossed in reading this book that I read in one sitting. I liked Jacob too, no spoilers but I was routing for him when all was revealed. Overall this was a very satisfying reading and I enjoyed it immensely, it had everything romance, danger, intrigue and enough twists to keep you guessing. Highly recommended.

This book completely pulled me out of my reading slump. Inspired by the folklore of the Jersey Devil, it had me instantly captivated from the very first pages. I genuinely could not put it down and ended up reading it in a single day, everything else I had planned was pushed aside because I had to know how it ended.
The story blends romance and mystery beautifully, while also delivering a darker, more suspenseful atmosphere that kept me fully engaged. It reminded me slightly of The Shepherd King duology, which I loved! So readers who like Rachel Gillig or the Crimson Moth books I would highly recommend this! The twists throughout the book were well done and kept the story feeling fresh and unpredictable.
Harper is a fantastic FMC and Logan is an equally great MMC. Their banter and chemistry were highlights for me and added so much to the story. I also really enjoyed the supporting cast, nearly every character felt thoughtfully written and memorable.
Maria’s writing is immersive and detailed, and I especially loved the inclusion of folklore and creatures woven into the narrative. This is one of those rare books that made me want to reread it (even though rereading is not something I usually do).
Overall, this was a captivating read with romance, mystery, and just the right touch of darkness. I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy folklore inspired fantasy with strong characters and compelling twists.

Daughter of the Pines is an absolute knockout! Maria A. Eden has crafted a gothic, atmospheric masterpiece that feels like a love letter to the eerie folklore of the Pine Barrens. If you loved Rachel Gillig’s One Dark Window, this needs to be your next read.
Here’s why this book is a must-read:
Incredible World-Building: The town of Galloway is perfectly mist-shrouded and creepy, making the stakes feel high and the danger in the Barrens truly palpable.
Compelling Characters: Harper is a phenomenal FMC—vulnerable but strong as she navigates her family’s dark secrets and her hidden mind-speaking magic.
Delicious Banter: The chemistry between Harper and Logan is top-tier. Their sniping and growing affection added such a fun layer to the intense plot.
Unpredictable Twists: Just when I thought I had things figured out, a new revelation would drop. The ending left me absolutely stunned and desperate for book two.
This book is the perfect blend of romance, mystery, and dark fantasy. It pulled me right out of a reading slump, and I couldn't put it down until the very last page!
