Description

How often have you read a book that was life changing?  You know that if you practice what it suggests your life will be better, yet somehow you forget. You forget to meditate in the morning. You forget that three breaths calm you down. You forget all the lessons you learned.

Time for Me is different because it contains wisdom that really works. We have the ability to rewire and create new neural circuits in our brains, and the more we practice something new, the more we can form new neural pathways with each repetition.  In time, these new pathways become deeper than the ones made by our old habits and they become automatic. That means, if we were to practice all this week thoughts such as 'I am happy' or 'I am calm', we would be more apt to return to them when we feel otherwise.

The seeds of all human characteristics are within us—good and bad—the ones that grow are the ones we nurture, and that is why the wisdom in Time for Me is designed to be practiced every day.

"I've been privileged many times to hear Ruth speak and interact with many different people on the spiritual path. She brings the same qualities to her writing that effectively move people in her presentations and retreats to take action. Ruth is passionate about sharing her hard-won wisdom through practical and down-to-earth suggestions. One gets the impression that she never recommends something she hasn't tried successfully in her own life. Her advice is illustrated and dramatized by hundreds of wonderful stories and quotes from the wisdom tradition, worth collecting and savoring in their own right."

I pre-judged a 'Time for Me,' after the first couple of pages, initially feeling it was a little, what I would term, 'airy fairy.' Something about the book kept me reading however and as I progressed I found myself warming to it significantly - enough to give a final rating of four out of five stars.

So, what did I like about it?

Firstly, I liked the short readable sections, divided neatly into a thought for the day under headings such a 'Time for Peace,' or 'Time for Mindfulness' etc. Each thought for the day was followed immediately by a suggested follow-up practice session to hone your skills. It made absolute sense!

Secondly, there was no 'absolute.' The author was open-minded and inclusive enough to acknowledge her readers' different belief sets; for example, whether these be a belief in God, or a belief in some un-named higher being; whether the book be followed in chronological page order, or dipped in and out of according to favoured sections.

Ruth Fishel has written an accessible and thought-provoking book, suitable for beginners to self-help and meditation, or for those revisiting the ideas it contains.

This book is a very both thoughtful and practical book about dealing with life's problems. The author lets us know that she is a fellow traveler with us rather than some paragon of calmness and emotional fitness who talks down to her readers.

Because I was reading a review copy of the book, I did not have the time the author recommends to use the techniques in the book. However, the book inspired me to set a daily intention and not try so much to rush through thinks but enjoy the moment. Furthermore, I will make an attempt to try to meditate more.

The book recommends mindfulness and techniques from twelve step programs. I am familiar with the concept of mindfulness. The book has a inspirational/spiritual side to it; people who don't like these techniques may not like the book.
