Filled with beautiful photographs and descriptions of wildflowers that bloom around where I live, I see this as a great guide.
Personally, I could have used less in the beginning, because if I want to carry a book around on a hike, I need it to be lightweight. So perhaps I will just photograph and then use the book to look them up.
I think this or the Western Washington volume would be a great addition to our camper for when we are exploring our beautiful region. Having read them both back to back, they are very repetitive. I think it would be great to have them as a set where the beginning 15% is one volume, then the flowers that are Western exclusive as a volume, Eastern exclusive as a volume, and then both.
I appreciate that the map included the northern most part of California and B.C. to show exactly where the flowers can be found.
Thank you to Net Galley and Timber Press for the ARC. All opinions are my own.

This is a great pocket sized book for wildflower identification. It’s divided by flower color and each one has a full page photo of it in bloom and then one page of habitat, description and notes. It retails at $19.99, which seems high for a pocket handbook, but it is comprehensive and I know the prices of all books have really increased in recent years. Each name is given first by its regional common name and they were often different from what I call them but Latin names are also given. A very good resource.
I read a temporary online ARC of this book for review.
This is very similar to the Wisconsin wildflower book but also a little different (maybe slightly better?).
The layout and formatting is great, and it gives lots of information while still keeping everything approachable for beginners.
I liked that we got pictures of the different ecoregions in the beginning of the book, that was really interesting. The safety and resources section is also really helpful for knowing what to look out for and where to find more information.
It gives information about where they can be found (generally, not exact locations), descriptions of leaves and flowers, when they bloom, and more. This one, unlike Wisconsin however, does include a small map on each flower page of rough areas/counties where it can be found which I really liked.
I would definitely recommend this as a reference for hikers, photographers, or just anyone interested in wildflowers!
