This was so darling!! I loved the amazing artwork, absolutely beautiful to look at. This was so brilliantly written with all the words starting with 's'.

This was such a great picture book. I loved the illustrations. And I loved how the story is told with only S-words, but yet it flows and makes sense. This would be a great book for early readers.
Sunrise Sail - 3,5-3,75/5 - lu en anglais.
Review in english first. Avis en français en dessous.
Sunrise Sail explores themes of adventure, exploration, and an appreciation of nature. A boy and his grandfather share a passion for sailing. One (very early) morning they set off together on an adventure on their boat.
I particularly enjoy wordless picture books, or those with very little text. Here, it's interesting because it makes the illustrations more impactful and so they are more expressive. Therefore it's more dynamic, with the gestures, face expressions, body language.
The illustrations are warm and inviting. There are many interesting little details in the drawings. The pages are brimming with elements, making them rich. This allows for a longer, more in-depth observation of the visuals.
It's funny and adventurous, heartwarming. The work on the lights, the colors, the atmosphere is so good. It's immersive. I loved the night skies, and the orange sunrise.
"Slow sail.
Sea. Sky. Shore.
Spectacular !"
The author only used words that begins with the letter S. It's a brilliant way to tell and write a story. It makes it original. It also creates an opportunity for the reader to learn some vocabulary.
Thank you to Charlesbridge and Netgalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Sunrise Sail by Charles Trevino is incredibly clever and absolutely beautiful. I don't think I've come across children's books in which all the words in the book begin with a single letter. For this one, naturally, the letter is 's'.
While I don't know that I'd say there's a huge, exciting message to be found within the pages of this book or any significant educational content, I still genuinely just loved everything about this. The commitment to words starting with 's' was brilliant, the artwork was just exceptionally beautiful, and the story was incredibly cute.
I think kids who have good relationships with their grandparents or who enjoy adventuring would love this story. This is definitely a read together book and not one that I'd have kids read on their own. The complexity of words is far too difficult for most young readers, though it does offer a great opportunity to introduce them to new words and talk about what those words mean. After all, how many kids are going to come across the word 'serendipity'?

This was a beautifully illustrated story that was such a fun read! As a former kindergarten teacher I could see how this story could be used in teaching the letter s, building background knowledge around sailing, reading with expression or just for fun! Such a cute story!
Read this with my 2 year old and we loved that all the words started with S as she is now starting to learn her letters. The illustrations were gorgeous and we adored the dog throughout the story. She giggled, she gasped, and wanted to read it again once we had finished. This book is perfect for the first easy readers or to help with learning your letters.
I love that this book was written by a retired program coordinator for an ASL Interpreter Training program and that he incorporated conventions of ASL storytelling. Thus, I am inspired to learn more about this storytelling history. Additionally, the book is beautiful! I could see this book becoming a beloved story time favorite!
This was such a great book for reading aloud. My kids loved listening to it and were completely pulled in by the sense of adventure, the fun, and the really sweet relationship between the three characters.
The fact that it’s all done with just one letter absolutely cracked them up, they thought it was hilarious and kind of amazing. Because there are so few words, it leaves loads of space for talking things through and letting kids add their own ideas and story as you go. My eldest especially loved learning about the different parts of a sailboat too. A really fun, interactive read that works so well for sharing together.
Beautiful illustrations and a fun story about an day spent together with an unexpected hero at the end. As a primary teacher and mom to three littles I love when a story can be used to teach without the kiddos realizing that they are learning. This story focused on the letter "s" and it would be a great way to reinforce the letter and sound for little ones that are learning their alphabet.
This book is pure read-aloud joy. Sunrise Sail turns language into play, and I loved how naturally the all-S structure flows from start to finish. It feels musical, silly, and surprisingly soothing at the same time.
Beyond the clever wordplay, the story is warm and engaging, with a sweet grandparent connection and a satisfying little adventure. A creative picture book that invites kids to listen closely, laugh, and lean into the fun of words.
My kids ADORED this book! We have read it over and over at bedtime. What a fun, adventurous book for kids. Highly recommend.
This is a delightful picture book about a boy and his grandfather who go for a sail and a picnic. However, every word used starts with an S, which massively limits the words the author can use but they did a spectacular job and this was a fun and delightful read. The illustrations are also gorgeous, this was a lovely book and I hope the author creates more like this.

The illustrations in this were so cute and expressed the storyline so well! I had so much fun having my five year old read this with me! I couldn't stop laughing because he has a lisp so the incessant S-es were killing me. This was really well done, especially with having every word start with the same letter! Impressive and fun!

Yes, this is how you write a book. An original concept with "s" vocabulary and illustrations that fit perfectly. What a delight to read this book. I would recommend this as a read aloud to children during circle time, and also to speech language pathologists looking for fun ways to practice s and s blends. I highly recommend this book.
