Description
Life has a way of changing your path--and Claire Karadec certainly didn't plan on a fork in the road in her forties. From New York Times bestselling author Courtney Walsh comes a witty, warm, and uplifting novel about second chances, found family, and the courage it takes to become yourself--perfect for fans of Annabel Monaghan and Sarah Adams.
After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.
Before she can talk herself out of it, she takes a step of faith, puts her old life in the rearview mirror, and leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart. This one step sends Claire on a journey of self-discovery, giving her the courage to conquer her fears, one checklist item at a time, and showing her that life can be a whole lot brighter than she imagined.
She rediscovers a love for baking, stumbles into new friendships, and even allows her daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is Miles, the charming, off-limits neighbor whose kindness makes it hard to remember why he's off-limits at all.
Between late-night journaling, disastrous first dates, great big lessons and priceless small victories, Claire learns to quiet the voice telling her she wasn't enough and listens to the one that asks the harder question . . .
What do I really want?
As old expectations loosen their grip, Claire discovers that belonging isn't a place you're invited to--it's a life you build one brave choice at a time. And the sweetest things often show up when you finally get out of your own way.
Lose yourself in a story that's equal parts heartwarming, hopeful, and full of joy. Early readers are loving the witty humor, uplifting journey, and sweet, clean romance that makes Brighter than Before such a life-affirming escape. Grab your copy today and discover a second-chance story about courage, connection, and building a life that feels truly your own.

Courtney Walsh knows how to absolutely swoon a girl with the most darling love story and most previous characters. I could not put this down! Highly recommend! It’d be a really fun book club pick.
This title reached me at precisely the right time. I found myself reading Walsh's story fast and furiously. I identified with the main character and her search for a fresh start. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Courtney Walsh has delivered a stunning, heart-filled masterpiece about starting over. Watching Claire Karadec trade her shattered country-club past for a bold "daydream list" in Chicago was incredibly inspiring. Her journey of self-discovery—filled with baking, messy first dates, and the charmingly off-limits Miles—is both relatable and deeply moving. This story beautifully proves that belonging isn't something you're handed; it’s something you build one brave choice at a time. It’s an empowering, five-star reminder that our brightest chapters often start with a single step.
Claire spends a year of her life depressed and unable to move on after a painful divorce. She has spent nearly three decades pretending to be the person everyone wanted. It’s time for her to finally find out who she really is. She makes a list of what she really wants for her life and starts down a path of self discovery.
This is a beautiful, second chance at life story.
The main character is so relatable and lovable. You will absolutely fall in love with her journey and maybe be inspired to go on one of your own!
Another beautiful story from Courtney Walsh.
I don’t know how Courtney Walsh does it or what kind of magic she uses when she writes, but Brighter Than Before was amazing and beautiful and moving. I loved Claire’s journey. It was full of growth and hope and change while also being hilarious (& cringy 🫣) at the same time. There was everything I’ve come to love and expect from her novels and it’s easily why she is one of my favorite authors. Every time I read one of her books I’m touched and challenged in the best kind of way. I couldn’t put it down and I highly recommend reading it!!
I was given an advanced copy of Brighter Than Before. All opinions expressed above are my own.

Courtney Walsh has done it again! This was absolutely delightful from start to finish! The book is full of themes of second chances and redemption. The plot was well-paced and the characters were charming and witty. This is definitely one I'll read again! Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced copy of the book.
love Courtney Walsh and Better Than Before was such a cozy and uplifting read! Claire’s move to Chicago after her marriage implodes felt both scary and exciting, and I loved watching her slowly rebuild her life one brave checklist item at a time. I loved that the baking, the journaling, the awkward first dates all felt so real. This book was easy to sink into and emotionally warm without being cheesy. If you love stories about second chances, found family, and figuring yourself out in midlife, add this to your TBR!
Brighter Than Before is pure comfort in book form. It’s heartfelt, hopeful, and had me smiling and giggling more times than I can count. Claire is so real that even if you haven't gone through exactly what she has you can still easily find a way to relate to her. Miles.... whew... what a man! He was pushy without being annoying and too pushy. He was exactly what Claire needed. Lennon is the best friend we all need! I loved all of the characters I was supposed to and disliked all of the others haha. Courtney Walsh just gets how to write characters that feel real and stories that hug you right when you need it. Sweet, emotional, and impossible not to love. The life lessons in this book, I believe, are some that we all need at some point in our lives. This is a warm, comforting read that reminds you that even after hard times, brighter days really can come. Total five star read for me.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This was the perfect combination of romance and women's fiction. I love Miles (who, for whatever reason, has a Scottish accent in my head) and Claire. I admire Claire's determination to change her life and finally change her life and make it what she wants it to be. this story is absolutely filled with character growth, embracing your dreams, and learning that it's never too late to start over.
thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson for my complimentary advanced ebook copy. all opinions here are completely my own.

It's time for Claire to decide what she wants from her life. She left her husband more than a year ago, after finding out he was having an affair with a much younger woman. Now at 46, she's made a list of what she wants and she's going to get started.
First on the list, is to move to Chicago. She has enough money from the sale of her house that she can figure the rest out later. However, in her first night at her new apartment, she manages to lock herself out of it, in the middle of a spa treatment. She runs into her new neighbor, Miles, and he ends up owning the building. He offers to help her with some of her new goals and she agrees. Before she knows it, she's on a dating app and applying for jobs all over the city, with Miles at her side. This is a heartwarming book about finding yourself, friendships, and love.
This book has been such a breath of fresh air in so many way. So many women go through Claire’s experience in their 40’s, and it’s a beautiful story from beginning to end. It brings humor to the chaos of life and joy to those moments we find happiness after pain. I adored Miles from the beginning to end— and I love how Claire fights his kindness with her own assumptions. The Chicago setting, foil daughters, and even how to make friends in your 40’s shows that we can all shine through 2nd chances, taking a chance on our dreams, and our redemptive stories. And the inclusion of her journaling made it so intimate to see what we dream as we are honest with ourselves, and not knowing between the pages of life— it’s ok to not have the answers, no matter our age.

BRIGHTER THAN BEFORE by COURTNEY WALSH is the bittersweet story of Claire Karadec who moves to Chicago to start a mew life after her entitled and arrogant husband breaks her heart, and her country club friends drop her. She is armed with a list of things she wants to do, one of which is to make friends. As we follow her sometimes hilarious adventures, we see her courage and strength of character as she literally “finds herself” in Chicago.
Having beenn rejected by most people, including her mother, she is amazed at the kindness and acceptance she experiences from her handsome neighbour, Miles,, and her group of new friends, especially after having put up with her ex husband’s unkind criticism for so many years…..
The characters are beautifully portrayed and the dialogue is witty. It is altogether a lovely read and one I highly recommend.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
I truly enjoyed reading the book Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh. Not only did I finish this book a little under two days, it was full of laughter, soul, strong character development along with a great storyline that grasps your attention since page one. Courtney Walsh is a talented author that has a gift in providing light-hearted, soulful, sweet stories in which each character faces real life situations. Each book I have read by her has presented real characters that develop over time but are presented with issues such as divorce, marital issues, friendships and relationships, struggles one faces in life to help the reader relate and feel free to explore the world around them. It is difficult to pick which book title is my favorite by this author but Brighter Than Before and The Summer of Yes are by top favorites. I look forward to many more books to read by Courtney Walsh in the future. Thank you Netgalley and Courtney Walsh for the opportunity to read this book. I highly recommend this book to fans of romance, but clean fun no spice just good content and plot line. chick lit fiction similar to Abby Jimenez, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Mary Kay Andrews. This review are my own words, my honest opinion.
Let me first start off by saying I absolutely love anything Courtney Walsh writes so it's no surprise I would love this one too. But this one gets me in the feels as a 40 something leaning into the stage of who am I outside of a wife and mother? How can I be brave in a new city? While my experiences are not the same as Claire I can relate on so many levels which probably made me love this book all the more. I laughed as Claire embarrassed herself yet again. I cried as she recognized the love her friends had for her. I rooted for her in every aspect of her life.

Claire while writing her list, felt that some items were unlikely to happen as she had become so subservient in her relationship with John. She was told multiple times that she should be so lucky to be married into a prominent family and therefore, was instructed to behave accordingly. Even through, it was many of her ideas that led John to succeed in his marketing career, he was the one to receive all of the accolades. It was only when she hit rock bottom as evidenced by her fall from grace in the fountain, that she realized she could take her power back. She was the one in control. It was that type of magnetism that attracted her friends Lennon and Lorraine to want to be around her. She took rejections as simply that which no longer defined who she was. Her inner beauty came through and most importantly, she began to love and trust her instincts as to what she really wanted. She wanted to honor her Grandma's life through baking. That was the impetus of The Porch and subsequently The Back Porch. She let those who championed her such ad Miles, Zoey and Ava to build her social media platform as evidence that her baking skills deserved to be recognized. Lorraine posting on her channel brought her followers to become customers. That she knew her daughter Minnie always believed in her. That is how her love with Miles grew. Its because she realized that she deserved it.

Claire couldn't have been more blindsided when she caught her husband with another woman at the charity gala SHE had planned. Until she realized she was the last to know and the life she had been living was no longer her own. Her therapist asked her to consider what it is that she really wants, something Claire never had the luxury of considering before. So she made her list, starting with moving to Chicago, the city she always wanted to live in, make new friends, and try new things. The more she leans into what she wants, the more she realized what it is that her heart truly desires. And having handsome Miles in her corner doesn't hurt...
This is a beautiful tale of a woman starting over, finding her voice, and finally understanding she deserves all the good things. I absolutely LOVED this book!

Courtney Walsh has done it again—this time with Claire Karadec—a 40-year-old, recently divorced single mom to an adult daughter. I loved everything about this book—the plot, the heart, and especially the message that it’s never too late to change your life and begin again.
After a powerful journaling session, Claire decides to go on a journey of self-discovery—to figure out who she is beyond being a wife and a mom, and where she truly belongs. Armed with a checklist, encouragement from her daughter Minnie, and help from her new neighbor Miles, Claire begins to take brave steps forward. And while Claire might not see herself as brave at first, she absolutely was. I loved her heart, her determination to learn from her past rather than let it destroy her, and watching her move through betrayal, heartbreak, and the grief that followed, while still allowing herself to blossom.
Two quotes that especially stood out to me were:
“Just because I wouldn’t have chosen this outcome for my life doesn’t mean my life can’t become something beautiful,” and “Good things grow out of pain.”
The relationships in this story were such a joy to read. Claire’s bond with her daughter Minnie and the friendships she forms along the way were genuinely sweet and heartwarming. There were many moments where I found myself laughing out loud, and plenty of moments of kicking my feet in pure giddiness.
This is an uplifting, hope-filled story about second chances, self-discovery, and believing that life can still surprise you. A must-read for fans of Annabel Monaghan and character-driven contemporary romance.

Brighter than Before was a delightful novel that made me smile throughout the story. The characters were well developed and relatable. I enjoyed the fact that the main characters were a little older and having to navigate a new chapter in their lives after years of stability. This new chapter in Claire's life seemed more daunting and challenging because of the fact that she had been in a stable relationship for so long. This really caused me to understand her fear and hesitation to jump into something new but also celebrate her moments of success when she was able to overcome the challenges. I enjoyed the awkward moments throughout the book that came due to trying new things because those moments are so authentic and relatable. The ending gave me hope and made me happy to see all of the characters find joy in their current stages. The only thing I was wishing for was for John to get a glimpse of her success and have to eat his words at telling her to quit, but it's okay, we all know it happened! I enjoyed this book, thank you for the advanced copy!

I could read a new Courtney Walsh book every week and still want for more. This book was absolutely fantastic! I loved how Minnie got along with Miles and how Miles was so comfortable with himself that he didn't feel the need to correct Claire's misunderstandings (which ended up making for an entertaining correction down the road). You can really see the growth of both Miles and Claire throughout the book. The angst they both felt, while still trying to respect the other. The moment when he got so close and she asked if anything had changed for him and he said no...she just nodded and walked away... That was maturity on her part at its absolute finest. That scene was written so perfectly. I would reread this book just for the perfection of that scene. This story is about love and friendship and most importantly, amazing growth after total brokenness. You should ABSOLUTELY read this book.

I LOVED this book. Claire was immediately super likeable and you couldn't help but feel so awful for her when she found herself humiliated in the fountain- but to then build herself up, and not only write her list of goals but actually achieve them, one by one, was inspirational. There was some great humour along the way, particularly with her foray into dating online, and I really enjoyed the side line of baking throughout. Miles was a great character- good looking, so thoughtful and friendly and obviously I was rooting for them to get together from the very beginning. A very readable and enjoyable romance with great characters and a brilliant setting- would absolutely recommend.

Courtney Walsh is a great storyteller. I feel like I have been on a streak of reading "just okay" books but I immediately like the characters in this one, the settings (her apartment complex and courtyard - perfect) and getting to explore familiar areas of Chicago. Even if you have not been unlucky in love, I think you will be able to relate to this book. 5 stars!
Thank you Net Galley for the advanced readers copy!
Brighter than Before was exactly what I was looking for! A super cute rom com based in Chicago with characters in the same phase of life as I am. I loved Claire and Miles characters and the plot was so cute, even if it was predictable. Thanks for a great read!

After 23 years of marriage, Claire’s life turned upside down and decided to not only have a fresh start but find herself. Along the way she had to push herself out of her comfort zone and truly push herself. Her new neighbor, Miles, helps her find just that.
Loved how there was no cussing! Also had no spice.
This is my first time reading a book by Courtney Walsh and i loved every second of it! Loved the story line and the message behind it. You’re never too old to do new things on your own or discover yourself.

„It’s never too late to begin again.“
What a gorgeous read! This is not just a sweet romcom, but also a pep talk for all of us who need to hear that the world doesn’t end after a bad experience, no matter how bad.
I fell in love with Claire and her moving forward regardless of being scared and scarred badly. All (well… almost all) of the characters in this book are just so loveable, that you’d want them to be your people too. We all need people like them in our lives. Fun, loving and caring.
I’d recommend this to everyone who loves a story full of love, hope, courage, a little sadness and feeling humiliated, friendship and fulfilling your dreams.
This is not the first book written by Courtney Walsh that I’ve read and it sure won’t be the last.
Thank you to Courtney Walsh, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson fiction for this ARC!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! The story follows Claire, who just went through a nasty divorce and after being a stay at home mom, finds herself at a crossroads. Deciding to pick herself up by the bootstraps, she moves to a new city and begins to rediscover herself. She has an accomplice in Miles, her neighbor at her new complex. She goes on journey to find a job she loves, dating, friends and finding herself. The pacing was great and there were some funny scenes. Only some missing scenes, readers should feel comfortable reading this book. I love that the characters are in their mid-40s. This is a must read!
Thank you, Thomas Nelson Fiction, for providing this book for review consideration through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
I absolutely loved this book, it had me giggling. It’s heartfelt, relatable and definitely a comfort book. It was filled with life lessons and the idea of it’s never too late for a second chance and in Claire’s perspective it’s about reclaiming herself and making her life what she wants it to be. It’s never too late to start over.
After the divorce Claire’s life isn’t the same, now she’s trying to navigate life beyond being the ex wife and a mother. I’d love to see this as a movie adaptation!

What a cute book! We meet Claire at a low point in her life – her husband of over two decades has ditched her for a newer, more sparkly model. Claire has been hold up in her house not yet ready to move on. Then, she is inspired to take a chance on herself. She moves to a new city where she doesn’t have a job, friends or connections, and embarks on creating a new life for herself. She slowly builds her new identity in this new city with the help of some new friends and neighbors, including a hunky landscaper named Miles. This book is a heartwarming tale of starting over and taking chances. Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with this ARC.
When Claire discovers her husband tucked away in a corner of their country club kissing a much younger woman, her world shifts in an instant. The life she thought she’d built—comfortable, privileged, predictable—comes to an abrupt end. Determined to reclaim her future, she creates a list of brave new steps, starting with a move to a brand-new city. Soon she’s settling into a cozy apartment in Chicago, leaving her old life in Denver behind.
As Claire begins this next chapter, she rediscovers her love of baking, lets her daughter set up a dating-app profile, and slowly starts forming new friendships. One of those friendships is with Miles—the kind, handsome, recently divorced owner of her apartment building. Though he’s decidedly off-limits, their easy connection becomes one of the unexpected joys of her new life.
Between disastrous first dates, moments of self-doubt, and the steady encouragement of new friends, Claire learns what it means to be brave, to try again, and to believe that life can still hold beautiful surprises.
Courtney Walsh has long been one of my favorite authors, and this book is a perfect example of why. Her writing blends humor, heart, and hope with unforgettable, lovable characters. Brighter Than Before is a charming, uplifting story I thoroughly enjoyed.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All comments and opinions are my own.
Claire is figuring out what the second half of her life is going to look like after heartbreak. Her husband of 23 years, John, cheated on her and is now getting married to the sidepiece, Misty. She can't bear the humiliation of living in Colorado where her whole community is, and needs to find out who she is apart from a wife and mother. Her divorce newly finalized, she moves to Chicago and makes a list of things she wants to do- get a dog, get real friends, and download a dating app. Her neighbor Miles owns the apartment building she gets and apartment in, and he helps her along the way as she tries dating for the first time, kind of ever.
This book really made me feel seen. Being humiliated by John was only her first embarrassment, but later when Claire makes mistakes she learns how to pick herself back up and try again. If you like a clean/closed-door romcom with a FMC in her 40's, friends-to-lovers please pick this up. It is not the complicated and dramatic and sad plot in many lovely books. This one is a lot more like a Hallmark movie, it is perfect in its pure simplicity. The characters do have some tragic back story, but this is not the story, it is more about the every day, the inner dialogue that is perfect for a character learning who they are.
I loved the text message exchanges between Claire and her adult daughter Minnie, her quirky first dates that go nowhere, and her tiny triumphs. This book was honestly a real joy to read. I love Courtney Walsh, she is an auto-buy author for me. I love her writing style and her characters. I hope someday she will include an LGBTQ character in one of her books.

I loved, loved this story, Courtney Walsh has done it again, a story that I didn’t want to put down. It is beautiful, sweet, heartwarming, really all the good feels. Claire finds her husband cheating on her, it is difficult to overcome. But with journaling she creates a list of what she really wants and who she really is. The path, the real friends she makes along the way are so wonderful and real feeling. The bad dates, hilarious! Miles is absolutely the sweetest, I think he is my new favorite book boyfriend. He is kind, caring and so supportive and there for her when she needs without asking. Their daughters are delightful, there is so much to love about this book, you will want it on your list to be read!

This was certainly a joy to read! I didn't care much for the writing style but the storyline was soooooo much fun!
I can certainly relate to these characters in the book. Changes are never easy. At least not for me but having made a new friend went a long way to help adjust.
These characters are certainly flawed to be sure but that's what made this story interesting. Claire is certainly proof of that. I found myself rooting for her. She had me snicker at her in some places and others? Well, I will let you read this cool book to find out!!
I finished it in late afternoon. It grabbed my attention at the beginning and never let go. I love books like this.
I hated to see it end because I really loved this book. I can't wait to see what she writes next!!

I loved this one & absolutely inhaled it. I always enjoy Courtney Walsh's wonderful characters, humor and clean writing. I especially connected with this story because the FMC was in her mid-40s, which is so rare to find in a rom-com! I loved watching Claire fight back after a devastating divorce and show tremendous bravery through a fresh start in a new city. I loved her chemistry with Miles and both of their relationships with their young adult children. Other great things are the found family vibe, the fun plotline of starting a bakery and the humor of dating app mishaps. I smiled so much during this book!

This was such a sweet romance. I absolutely loved Claire and Miles’ dynamic! Claire, after publicly discovering her husband’s affair, decides that she needs to get a fresh start and finally do the things that she was too afraid to do alone. She moves to Chicago, a place she’s always wanted to live and makes herself a list of all the things she wants to try. As someone from the suburbs of Chicago I loved the setting! Walking along Lake Michigan, eating deep dish pizza and Michigan Avenue are a classic Chicago experience. All of the side characters were memorable without stealing too much of the spotlight and made the story come to life even more. Claire’s internal struggles were so relatable: doubting herself, lacking confidence, overthinking, and trying to live up to others' opinions. It was a joy to see her confidence grow as she (with Miles and Minnie’s encouragement) began to follow her dreams and put in the work to make it a reality.
Thanks to NetGalley, Courtney Walsh, and Thomas Nelson for this eARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Finding yourself isn't a race with a finish line; it’s a continuous journey of the soul. This book was truly amazing, and I walked away feeling deeply inspired. It serves as a gentle reminder that finding yourself is possible no matter your age.
It’s about the courage to try again, even when that familiar flicker of fear starts to creep in

After 23 years of marriage, Claire finds out her husband has been having affair. Tired of being depressed she moves to Chicago to find herself. She moves into an apartment in a building owned by Miles. He is very helpful in getting her settled and becoming a new person. The blind dates Claire had were so interesting and her attempts at making a friend were heartwarming. It was fun seeing those around her help her start her own bakery. Great story about learning to take care of yourself first. I loved the way Miles always had her back with humor and kindness.

Is there ever a Courtney Walsh story that isn’t absolute perfection? Feel-good, comforting reads. An auto-read author for me. Beautiful little story!

I believe I have read nearly every book written by Courtney Walsh, and enjoyed every one of them. But this one was so different than all of the others. This is about a 40 some year old woman who, after finding her husband cheating, is divorced and broken. It’s about how she finds a whole new life, finds herself, and finds joy in the midst of it — as well as a new and much more worthy love. Such a delight, and Miles is definitely a keeper! This one is highly recommended.

Loved! I've never read a Courtney Walsh book before and I'm smitten with these characters! I initially requested because it's set in Chicago where I currently live so I had to read for the vibes, and she didn't disappoint! I just thought the book was very uplifting and just what I needed to start the new year. So happy I read this and will definitely have to read all her future books!

I was immediately HOOKED into this book in th first chapter!!! I loved how much of a hot mess the heroine was! I could completely identify with her! Ha! And her bravery for starting over from scratch somewhere new. Her bravery in trying new things made ME want to be brave and try new things. And the romance, oh the romance. I swooned, actually swooned.
Courtney Walsh does it again!
When Claire hits rock bottom after her nasty divorce she finally takes matters into her own hands. She packs up and moves to a new city, and state! No friends,no job, no family. Just her list, bravery, and attitude on starting over in her 40s.
She slowly starts checking things off her list and quickly sees how happy she is becoming. She met a wonderful, handsome man, met some wonderful new friends, opening up her dream bakery.
You must check out Courtney Walsh’s new book.

What a delightful story! While Claire goes through a difficult divorce that causes her to spiral, she decides to pick up the pieces by moving to a new city and tackling some things that scare her.. I appreciated that the author shows the struggles that come with owning your own business, since my family had a bakery for years and, while I loved it, working in one is hard work and owning a small business and turning a profit takes work. This story is a delightful one, filled with fun characters.
I absolutely enjoyed this book! I loved how optimistic it wise, while being full of pain and growth, sadness and happiness. It truly told a story that felt authentic. I also loved that this is a second-chance story about finding love again after divorce and healing through love and friendship. I enjoyed the wisdom of the characters who have grown children but they are in the prime of their adult lives. The book has a fantastic cast of characters, I didn't want to stop reading it.

I have enjoyed all the Courtney Walsh books I have read--but this is my favorite. I appreciated the transition Claire made from who-she-thought-she-needed-to-be to the person she truly was--and the bravery required to get there. Sweet love story as well, but her growth and willingness to start all over again are what captivated me.

Brighter Than Before is a warm, uplifting romance about starting over and finding love when life doesn’t go as planned.
Claire Karadec, newly divorced in her forties, moves to Chicago and creates a bucket list to rebuild her life new job, real friendships, rediscovering her love of baking, and (unexpectedly) opening her heart again. What unfolds is a beautiful story of second chances, found family, and a slow burn, friends to lovers romance with her neighbor, Miles.
I absolutely loved this book. Miles is one of my favorite golden retriever MMCs, and watching their love story unfold after everything they’ve been through felt so earned and so deserved. I found myself giggling and crying while reading. It was such a comforting reminder that you’re never too old to start over, chase your dreams, and find that soul-shattering love. And for my no spice girlies this one is for you!
Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for this ARC!

To say I’m obsessed with this book is a bit of an understatement. The humor and intrigue immediately drew me in, and the thought-provoking life lessons will surely keep you around. Courtney has such a gift of creating characters that feel real and relatable. This story had the elements of an elite 80’s or 90’s RomCom movie, coupled together with the perfect amount of rawness and depth. The relationships forged within these pages were simply the best. Also, one of the most heartwarming and inspiring epilogues I think I’ve ever read. I’m not sure I’ve ever been this upset to finish a book because I wasn’t yet ready to part with the characters.
After 20+ years of marriage, 46-year-old Claire Karadec finds herself divorced from her husband who didn’t seem to know the definition of fidelity. She’s spent her life dedicated to lifting this man up in his high profile, country club lifestyle, only to be stabbed in the back. Now it’s time to pick up her shattered pieces, step out in faith and start life over again. She starts by making a list of goals. Step one – move to Chicago for a fresh start in a new city. Immediately upon settling into her new apartment Claire starts making new friends who show her a side of herself she never knew existed. She dreams, she journals and she gets herself into plenty of laugh-out-loud first date scenarios that will have you giggling until your sides hurt. I don’t think I’ve ever rooted this hard for a romance in a book before. The FMC and MMC completely captured my heart.
This is a story about growth and change, about facing your fears, starting over and becoming something brighter than you ever thought possible. It’s about found family and those people holding your hand through the storms. It’s about YOU and it’s about ME – I dare you to read through and not find a little bit of yourself within the pages. You don’t have to be middle-aged or to have gone through a tumultuous divorce to relate to the characters in this book. It’s going to touch your heart no matter where you are in life.

Courtney Walsh has a gift of making you relate to, care about, and root for any character she writes. Claire is blindsided when her marriage suddenly ends. Heartbroken, she decides to move to across the country and start working towards goals she has finally decided put on paper.
I absolutely loved this book! It was heartfelt, funny, swoony and gave me the feeling of not wanting to put it down. Although some readers may be in a different stage of life, Courtney Walsh does an amazing job of making you feel what the character feels and relate to her. I love the underlying message that that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. The MMC is perfect in every way and I love how well he compliments Claire. He has the quiet strength and steadiness that is not often portrayed in romance books. I really enjoyed the journal entries and text messages woven in and also the theme of found family.
I highly recommend this book!! Thank you Courtney Walsh, Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

In Brighter than Before, Courtney Walsh delivers a beautiful, soul-stirring story about the courage it takes to start over when life doesn't go according to plan. Set in a charming town that feels like a character in its own right, the book follows the journey of healing after loss and the delicate process of rediscovering one's sparkle. Walsh’s writing is infused with a gentle warmth, balancing heavy themes of grief and regret with a hopeful, romantic spirit that never feels sugary or forced. It’s a masterclass in "small-town" fiction, focusing on the strength of community and the idea that our scars don't just tell a story of pain—they define how we shine even brighter on the other side. This is a perfect read for anyone who needs a reminder that new beginnings are always possible, no matter how dark the previous chapter felt.

“Brighter Than Before” will resonate with all women, no matter your age. Whether you are starting over in a new city, becoming empty-nesters when your college kids leave, or just wanting to do something for yourself for the first time in your life! For Claire, the life she had before was over, and the only bright spot to her dreary existence was her daughter Minnie, who was studying abroad at Oxford. Hiding in her house with snacks, streaming shows and dwelling on bad memories, was no way to live. Who wouldn’t want to escape to bustling Chicago with all of its history, scenic views and iconic food choices? Claire found the most beautiful apartment, with a gorgeous outdoor common area for the residents. The icing on the cake were her friendly neighbors, especially the devastatingly handsome Miles, who always seemed to be everywhere she was! His mischievous smile and flirty personality made Claire feel all giddy inside which is something she hadn’t felt in a long time. Another new addition to Claire’s life was a dating app that Minnie had signed her up for, but she wasn’t sure if she was ready for romance. She hadn’t been on a date in 25 years and was afraid of who might be out there waiting to meet her. Regardless, Claire swiped left, swiped right, went on a few less than memorable dates and decided this wasn’t the way to find love. Perhaps love is all around you, hiding in plain sight, waiting for your heart and mind to be ready for this crazy, little thing called love.
Courtney Walsh writes some of the funniest, rom-coms that also have plenty of depth. This story follows Claire, a woman in her mid-40s, as she navigates life after a divorce in a new city, Chicago. Claire moves to Chicago to attempt to “find herself” again. She creates a list of things she wants to accomplish on her own and sets to work on achieving them, gaining confidence along the way with the help of her neighbor, Miles.
This story had so much depth. The character development was fantastic. I found myself smiling like an idiot and laughing throughout the book, but also tearing up a little, because Courtney writes books that are so relatable to real life issues.
I have read many of Courtney Walsh’s books and this is my new favorite. It was so refreshing to read about a FMC that was in her 40s, instead of in her 20s. We are often underrepresented group in literature.

I really enjoyed this book. It really made me feel so many emotions. I was rooting for Claire from the beginning. Shes such a likable, relatable character you can’t help, but want to root for her. It was satisfying to see her take back her life and gain the confidence she lost because of her divorce. The post divorce dates Claire went on were hilarious. I absolutely adored Miles. He was so charming and I loved how supportive he was of Claire from the beginning. All of the side characters were so funny and it was so sweet to see them help Claire in different ways. I also thought the relationship between a Claire and her daughter was beautiful. It was cool to see such a tight bond that was even almost friend like. This was my first Courtney Walsh book, and definitely not my last. I will be checking out her other works. I highly recommend this book for those who love found family, second chance romances, and a book about healing and self discovery. It was such a cozy book that will leave you feeling good. Thank you to the publisher and Courtney Walsh for the opportunity to read this one early on Netgalley.
“Dr. Baskin told me once that bravery isn’t the absence of fear. It’s feeling the fear but doing the thing anyway. This feels brave. It also feels a little crazy.”
This book was sooo good. I loved the growth of the characters throughout the book, the friendships, the community. This book just felt so special. The way Claire was so burned in her life and embarrassed yet continues to push thru the tough moments to become the person she wants. I felt so attached to the characters in this book- the way they showed up, supported and loved each other. I can’t recommend this book enough it was wonderful!

What a lovely sweet book. It has been a year since Claire caught her husband cheating in a very public way. She’s moved to Chicago and restarting her life with a goal of getting out of her comfort zone. Claire is a wonderful relatable woman who builds a strong found family. What a fantastic way to spend a snow day with my new friends Claire and Miles.
* I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own." In less than 24 hours, Brighter Than Before became one of my favorite reads of 2026. I loved the humor, the thoughtfulness, and the feeling of hopefulness and new beginnings this story invoked. The chemistry between Claire and Miles was easy and believable. I’m a huge fan of friends to lovers, and the way this was portrayed was perfectly written and believable. Claire being a 40 something divorcee who feels a little lost in life was so poignant for someone my age. Although I’m happily married, I often struggle with my own purpose in life now that my kids are older. Brighter Than Before makes me want to dream big, do things that scare me a little, and put myself out there more. If you enjoy friends to lovers, found family, and no spice, then I think you’d enjoy this book. Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction, Courtney Walsh, and NetGalley for the eARC of Brighter Than Before (to be published June 9, 2026).
As soon as I received the notice that I was approved for this book, I tore right into it, full of high hopes and expectations. Courtney Walsh never disappoints! I loved it. And I loved reading about a woman in her forties, entering a new life chapter with that ironic mix of trepidation and bravery. Claire is a hero among women, working hard, self-aware, courageous, but not taking herself too seriously. All of her dating mishaps are hilarious in their ridiculousness and Miles is a great "just a friend" neighbor going through his own post-divorce issues. Brighter Than Before is happy and hopeful, full of the light and optimism we all need. Read it. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I am not always a fan of contemporary romance novels...unless it's written by Courtney Walsh. The interaction between Miles and Claire was so comedic but yet deep. The other characters were also wonderful (except for the not so good dates with men from a dating app). The message behind the story was heartwarming and so encouraging. Definitely worth reading.
Courtney Walsh’s 5-star novel reminds us that it’s never too late to begin again.
At 46, Claire Karadec finds herself starting over after the painful discovery of her husband’s affair and I was instantly cheering her on as she embarked on her second act - a journey of transformation.
Walsh shows us that “life has a funny way of showing us what we’re made of and of bringing us exactly what - and who - we need.” For Claire, it’s her next-door neighbour, Miles Westbrook. He becomes the catalyst for Claire to start her to-do list and offers her the emotional support she needs to follow her dream. Miles is continually in her corner and shows her that good things grow out of pain, even when her bravery feels a lot like fear. I especially loved what he taught her about how to handle mistakes.
I knew what direction this book was going to take early on, but the journey to get there was emotionally satisfying and gave me time to appreciate Miles. These two broken souls and their second act was a compelling story, filled to the brim with hope, laughter, and risk. I’m so happy that they discovered the magic of new beginnings - the freedom to learn and grow.
We all need a Miles in our corner.

A sweet story of finding true love of yourself and another. Claire overcomes life disasters to find herself and the value she has to others. Loved the nostalgic references and the current pop culture ones, too. In an increasingly sad world, this brought me lots of joy!
I will read anything Courtney Walsh writes, but this one felt special. The banter reminded me of the Gilmore Girls, and the fierce friendships absolutely had me tearing up at the end.
At its core, this is a story about second chances and figuring out who you are when life doesn’t go the way you planned. The later-in-life romance was so refreshing, and I absolutely loved Claire. Her throwback humor and references were perfection.
The only reason this wasn’t a full five stars is that some of the self-reflection lingered a bit too long, but overall this was heartfelt and charming.
Thank you Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

THIS WAS THE PERFECT ROMCOM. Full transparency, I thought this was a different author and that I recognized the name. But it was someone completely different who I’d actually seen on Instagram and had wondered about and WOW she did not disappoint.
This book was INCREDIBLE. The writing style was so fun. I laughed, I gasped, I got emotional, I swooned. I loved the growth of the characters throughout the book. I loved the friendships and the community and how her daughter felt like a main character just through texting (which is SO real when you live long distances from family). I feel so attached to the characters in this book- the way they showed up, rallied, and gave love was just incredible. Love love love. I will be picking up another Courtney Walsh and soon.

Brighter Than Before was such a inspiring read! I really enjoyed Claire’s story and her push to do the hard things!
This is my first book by Courtney, and I am immediately a fan. I adored this book; our leading lady, her daughter, and all the supporting people she meets in her life. I really enjoyed the premise and the lessons throughout the book and found myself giddy for more. I’d recommend this one to anyone that wants a sweet story with a happily ever after.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh
Courtney Walsh does it again and honestly, at this point I’m convinced I’d give her grocery list five stars 🤷🏼♀️. Brighter Than Before was everything I wanted and didn’t even realize I needed.
I absolutely loved Claire and Miles. Their story felt real, emotional, and deeply relatable. As a 42-year-old reader, this book spoke straight to my heart the second chances, the self-reflection, the quiet hope that life can still surprise you in the best ways. It’s one of those stories that reminds you it’s never too late to start over or choose yourself.
Courtney’s writing is warm, honest, and effortlessly engaging. She has such a gift for creating characters that feel like real people and moments that linger long after you turn the last page. This book made me smile, made me feel, and left me with that cozy, content feeling only a truly great read can give.
Five stars without hesitation. 💫 If you love emotional, meaningful romance with depth and heart, don’t miss this one.

If Courtney Walsh writes it, I’m going to read it — and this book is exactly why. I loved this story. It was hopeful, funny, exciting, and full of clean swoon. Claire and Miles completely stole my heart, and I adored their community just as much as their relationship. This is the kind of book that leaves you smiling and wanting to reread it again and again.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book is a heartfelt, uplifting story about reinvention, courage, and the quiet bravery it takes to start over. Claire’s journey feels deeply real—messy, tender, and hopeful in a way that resonates long after the final page. Watching her rebuild her life after loss, armed with nothing but a checklist and a willingness to try, is both comforting and inspiring, especially for readers who believe it’s never too late for a fresh beginning.
The Chicago setting adds warmth and charm, perfectly mirroring Claire’s emotional transformation. From rediscovering her love of baking to forming genuine friendships and navigating truly disastrous first dates, every moment feels earned and relatable. The dynamic with her daughter, Minnie, is especially delightful, adding humor and heart, while Miles—the off-limits neighbor—brings a gentle, slow-burn romance that feels grounded in kindness rather than fantasy.
At its core, this story is about learning to silence self-doubt and ask the hard, honest question: What do I really want? It’s a hopeful reminder that belonging isn’t handed to us—it’s created through brave choices, small victories, and the willingness to step into the unknown. Warm, reflective, and quietly empowering, this book is a lovely read for anyone craving a story about second chances and the sweetness that comes from getting out of your own way.

When Claire finds her husband cheating after more than twenty years of marriage, she falls apart for a while, even embarrassing herself in a way that goes viral. She eventually pulls herself together though and moves from Colorado to Chicago after selling the house and begins a whole new life. Its here in Chicago that Courtney Walsh works her usual magic in a story of found family, lovable characters and a wonderful love story as our Claire and neighbor Miles grow and find each other.
Claires grown daughter is going to school in London, but signs her mom up for a dating ap, which adds lots of quirky characters to our story as Claire starts to date. Her new friends are a great bunch who help her with both her dating life and her new professional adventure, and neighbor Miles, although giving off too good to be true vibes is my favorite romantic lead in a long time. I have loved all this authors books that I have read and this one certainly continues the streak. If you enjoy closed door romance with found family and mature characters who actually communicate, as well as an ex that is fun to hate, give this one a try.

I absolutely loved rooting for Claire. After her devastating divorce & embarrassment that proceeded, Claire decides to move and start over, to find new hobbies, to make new friends, to find out who she is after a 20+ year marriage that when down the drain.
The friends Claire now has in her corner brought me to tears at one point and I loved her relationship with her daughter. The romance in this was so sweet & the banter was top tier.

Ahhh Courtney Walsh has done it again!!!! She never let's me down. This cute story of starting over fresh in a new city after heartbreak, embarrassment and just losing yourself. She gives you all the Rollercoaster feelings throughout the journey and its completely worth the ride.
Claire had what I'd call a devastating experience in the relationship department but man did that comeback show everyone that all things are possible.
Miles also had a devastating situation and was able to have a comeback as well but not as much as he could have until Claire.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this arc.
I had never read Courtney Walsh’s writing and didn’t know what to expect and after reading Brighter than Before, I am a big fan. What a great story about new beginnings and resillienace. Never cliched! Also, how wonderful and strengthening it is to have people in your corner. I'm always impressed the way this author can accuratley write the layers, complexity and nuance of relationships. The author can put into print human emotions and condition so well. I appreciate the believability in this story. Though the story and characters are fiction it all came to life! I was invested from beginning to end. One early reviewer said she didn't want this story to end and Same! This had good dialogue. A story can fall flat for me when there isn't good dialogue. A solid will they/won't they, slow burn romance. Defintely some aww moments. Plus, a book that's more about romance but rebuilding and coming back even stronger. There was so much sentiment and food for thought in the book. I very much enjoyed myself while reading it.
*thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an early copy. All opinions are 100% my own.
Brighter than Before was such a tender story about falling in love and finding oneself again. Claire and Miles are both older characters, and that maturity was beyond refreshing. I loved seeing Claire’s grown-up daughter, Minnie, interact with Claire and with Miles on a quest to find Claire a romantic partner. There’s so much tenderness in these dynamics, and that makes their relationships extra meaningful.
Claire and Miles have such a real journey to finding love. They felt like such authentic people and their love story felt true to them and their world. This is a no spice book, but that doesn’t mean the chemistry between these characters wasn’t there!
I loved the fact that Claire is older, divorced, has a daughter, and is figuring it out. Her quest to find herself is so admirable, and it’s a wonderful example of how it’s never too late to be who you truly want to be. Her arc about opening a bakery was so inspiring, and I loved it so much.

I loved reading Claire’s story every single day. She’s such a relatable main character who is imperfect, thoughtful, and absolutely someone worth rooting for. Watching her navigate life, love, and self discovery was a joy.
Beyond the humor and romance, this book shines in its themes: not being defined by other people’s expectations, the beauty of second chances, and asking yourself the big question of what do you really want? I especially loved the FMC who isn’t in her twenties, and Courtney Walsh handles this with so much warmth and authenticity.
This was the perfect cozy, funny rom com that still delivers a meaningful and uplifting message. Courtney Walsh is officially on my must read list now ❤️
Thank you to the publisher Thomas Nelson, author Courtney Walsh, and NetGalley for providing a review copy.
GUUYYSS. Where do I even begin? This book was ✨pure sunshine in story form✨.
I was drawn in by the adorable cover but otherwise went in fairly blind. I had never read any of Courtney Walsh’s work before, so I did not really know what to expect… and wow, she completely blew me away. From the very first chapter I felt like I had stepped into the most heartwarming, feel good 90s rom com. The whole book played out like a movie in my head and I never wanted to leave.
If you are going in blind like I did, here is a little spoiler free vibe check. Brighter Than Before follows Claire, a woman in her mid 40s whose life is completely turned upside down after the painful end of her marriage. Determined to start over, she moves to Chicago with a brave little “daydream list” that includes making new friends, finding a job she loves, rediscovering herself and, thanks to her daughter, even dipping her toes into dating again. Along the way she finds community, healing, a charming off limits neighbour named Miles, and a reminder that life can still surprise you in the best ways.
One of my absolute favourite things about this book was reading about a woman in her 40s. Now that I am in my late twenties, I keep realising I am slowly becoming older than so many romance heroines, and if I think about it too hard I spiral into a “wait… why do I not have my life together yet” crisis. But watching Claire completely upend her life, chase new dreams, and rebuild herself from the ground up filled me with so much hope and warmth. It was comforting, inspiring, and honestly really healing to read.
This is a no spice, swoony, heartfelt romance that feels like a giant cosy hug. It is about second chances, found family, messy fresh starts, and the beautiful truth that it is never too late to change your life or rediscover who you are.

Thank you so much to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced reading copy in exchange of a review! Brighter than before is a book I was super eager to read because of the author's books in the past. This one did not disappoint. One of the reasons why I love Walsh's books is because she write lighthearted books really well. And this one wasn't an exception. I loved the setting of this story, a freshly divorced heroine who wants to start over. Overall, this story was moving, romantic and beautiful. 5 stars.
This was such a cute romance! The MMC definitely had me swooning. This is the perfect spring break or summer beach read!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy of this book to review.
This was a fantastic read, and I enjoyed it a lot. I am looking forward to reading more by this author.

A delight of a story! Of course mishaps and embarrassment are a part of this diviced mother of 40 ish years. She is starting over, dating online with her daughter’s help, and trying new things in a new city!
It gives hope and romance to the reader
Oh my goodness I loved this book so much. This is a perfectly adorable second chance at life and romance story. The romance aspect is sweet, but I enjoyed the friendships Claire developed even more. Claire really grew and came into her own and I was rooting for her every step of the way! Also she opens the cutest, coziest bakery ever, so what isn’t to love about this book? Obviously this book checked all the right boxes for me, and I loved it, and I recommend it for anyone looking for a heartwarming romance, full of supportive friendships, personal growth and discovery, and mouthwatering descriptions of baked goods! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

I have enjoyed a handful of books written by Courtney Walsh. Brighter Than Before definitely stands out as my favorite.
I loved watching Claire evolve from her lowest. It felt reminiscent of a coming of age story but felt so relatable reading her navigate everything she went through as a grown woman. It took time but had such sweet highlights along the way.
I thoroughly enjoyed the various storylines from Claire’s dates, to the bakery progress and loved the side characters like Lennon, Lorraine and Minnie!
Miles was lovable from the very beginning and watching Claire and Miles friendship grow and evolve into more was lovely!
I’m so glad I got the opportunity to read this book and Courtney has quickly become a must read author for me.

This was my first Courtney Walsh book and it did not disappoint!
Claire, a 46 year old wife and mother, finds out her husband of 23 years is having an affair in a very public and embarrassing way. She takes a year of grief, and with the help of her daughter, therapist, and an extremely embarrassing situation, decides to take a leap and move to Chicago for change. This story is about growth and change, it’s about finding true friends to support you through thick and thin, and about finding love after divorce. I adored Claire’s relationship with her daughter, Minnie, who was her biggest cheerleader, and I especially loved Miles and Minnie’s bonding through helping her mom find herself. I love how their families blended together seamlessly and I loved Miles’s support of Claire and their love that they found together.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing forth gifted arc 💕

Shut up! This was so freakin cute! After a horrible divorce, Claire decides to start all the way over. New city, new friends, new dreams, but she isn’t sure she’s brave enough and she isn’t sure she can do it all on her own. Her new hot hot neighbor Miles starts helping her figure everything out, including getting back into dating. He’s sworn off all relationships so he’s the best kind of friend to help her. Anyway, he’s perfect, and she’s incredibly relatable and I love her. Darling story about finding the good through the hard and awful, and about surrounding yourself with those that cheer you on and are always there for you. All the thumbs up, can’t wait for it to come out for realsies June 8 so I can tell everyone to read it!

Claire and Miles are both mid-life and post divorce, learning to live again and the grown up glow up is really working for me. This book was sweet and delightful. It is refreshing to read about older relationships that aren’t made of first time romances, millions of dollars and easy streets. Courtney Walsh gave us a lovely read following these two as they individually reclaim their independence and grow together.
The latest by @courtneywalsh had a bit of a different vibe and I absolutely loved it! In her forties, newly divorced, and completely restarting her life, Claire heads off to Chicago. I loved the idea that it’s never too late to say yes to your dreams and go after what you really want! I loved the found family and Claire’s awesome adult daughter, her maturity and her support.
If you love baked goods and books that leave a sweet after taste, then this book is for you!
@courtneywalsh has once again created a masterpiece which follows the story of Claire, who, after a messy divorce decides to start her life again from scratch! Only for a 40 something mom, that seems just impossible until it isn't!

Brighter Than Before… utter perfection! I officially have a new favorite Courtney Walsh book! No notes!!
Loved this book! I sped through it and couldn't put it down. I really connected with the characters and loved the chemistry between Miles and Claire. The friends that come together for her had me cheering all of them on! This is how friendship should be.
I have never been or desired to go to Chicago but the descriptions in this book made it sound fun and charming and now I want to go! What a great story of finding your way through a change that wasn't your choice. Be sure to grab this one. It is fantastic.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
This is the first book I read from this author and was blown away! Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy. I first requested it based on the cover which I find adorable! I was also intrigued given I have spent my fair share of time looking in Chicago and it is one of my favorite cities.
The story itself… WOW! I devoured this book in record time. I simply couldn’t put it down. It was so refreshing to follow Claire as she navigates heartbreak and second changes and overcomes her fears. I found her incredibly well written and relatable. The comedy scenes had me giggling hard! The rest of the characters were endearing as well (Miles has stolen my heart!)
I love Courtney Walsh so when I saw this on NetGalley, I knew I wanted to read it. Unlike some of Walsh's previous novels and a lot of current contemporary romance books, having an "older" MMC and FMC added an interesting twist. The beginning had me cringing and embarrassed for Claire, yet rooting for her at the same time. I was laughing out loud at some of the dates and antics of Claire's dates and adored the relationship between Miles and Claire's daughter.
More than any other Walsh novel, the setting is another character of its own in this novel. Walsh's description of the apartment complex, the bakery, and all things Chicago added an element to the plot that I wasn't expecting.
This will be up there as one of my favorite Courtney Walsh novels now!

I have become a big fan of Courtney Walsh books! They’re sweet and make me smile and have genuine characters.
Claire is beginning anew in Chicago after a painful divorce and I found myself feeling angry, sad, and happy for her as she went through this transformation. I loved the friendships in this book and the way her community of friends felt so genuine as they supported her and cheered her on.
Courtney Walsh is becoming a must read author for me!
***Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!***
Wha an incredibly delightful, uplifting and heartwarming read!
Courtney Walsh is an instant read for me and the thing I love most about her books is that her characters LEAVE you with something. A lesson, if you will. I now want to open a bakery.
I so wish that the Front Porch bakery was a real place…
Did anyone else keep trying to cast Miles…?? Just me? lol

Also posted to goodreads. Thanks to Thomas Nelson fiction and netgalley for the arc. This was my first Courtney Walsh book and I loved it! It was such a cute story and I loved the themes around friendship and never being too old to chase your dreams. I also liked that it was based in chicago and was fun to follow the character exploring the city. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an uplifting story about second chances and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.

Another Courtney Walsh hit!! Brighter than Before is the story of Claire, who is starting over after her divorce. This is a sweet story of new friends, new loves, and finding yourself again.
Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction | Thomas Nelson for an early copy of this book in exchange for a honest review. I enjoyed this book and read it in one day. I loved the storyline and the characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
Did I stay up wayyyy too late finishing this book? Yes. Do I regret it? No!
This may have dethroned Isadora Bentley as my favorite book by Courtney Walsh. I loved it so much. As I’m getting older (almost 40😬) I love a romcom with the main character in her 40’s. It’s just so much easier to relate to.
Claire is a leading lady I wanted to root for all day long. I loved seeing her find herself and Regan her confidence after a messy divorce. And Miles? Oh my goodness! How does Courtney write stories that sizzle without all the unnecessary spice? Whatever she does, the recipe works and I hope she just keeps doing what she is doing.

After a really shocking public humiliation Claire decides she needs to go somewhere else and do things she has never tried before. She moved to Chicago, gets an apartment in a nice building. She tries things like eating out by herself , trying new foods and applying for a job. She meets the building owner ,Miles and they become friends. Her daughter sets her up on a dating app. Her daughter and Miles screen and set up her dates and nothing works out. One day she sees this rental space and her dreams of opening a Porch theme bakery becomes a reality as she is a great baker. All her friends pitch in to help. Do things with Miles change. THIS IS A GREAD READ. This is about not being scared to start over.

This book was so wholesome! I absolutely adored the rawness of it, the heartbreak, and the struggle to pull yourself together.
This book showed you have to believe in yourself and surround yourself with people that have your best interests in mind.
Claire's life has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. Currently she's at rock bottom and needs to make a change to even have a chance at renewing her self worth. A cheating ex husband and her entire social world for the last 24 years pulled right out from under her. She sets her sights on moving to Chicago and makes goals for herself to bring herself some happiness. All of her choices have to only bring her up from here, right?

I love Courtney Walsh. I love her books. I love her writing. I love her characters. I love her character development. I love her redemptive stories. I love that they are always relatable and hold so much depth and reading. I love how she writes sweet but so achingly tender and realistic romances with a little bit of tension and NO SPICE. I love that her books are light hearted but they aren’t just fluffy. I love her settings and the atmosphere she creates.
And I love all of these things in this book!!! My brain needed this so much. It was great didn’t want to put it down. Take me to Chicago. Find me a Miles. A fave book of 2026 FOR SURE!
Wow! I am a huge fan of Courtney Walsh's books and this one will rank right at the top as a favorite from her. Claire picks up her life and moves to Chicago to start over after her marriage ends. She finds friendship, fun, a new start, and a new love. Courtney writes clean, open door romance books and I follow her on social media. This was a great story!

After her husband’s infidelity and their subsequent divorce, Claire moves to a brand new city to make a fresh start and rediscover who she is. She bravely makes a list of her dreams and desires and starts checking them off. Even after a series of bad first dates, Claire’s confidence only grows as she tries new things and finally finds the people who will cheer her on. This is the most heart-warming second-chance story. I loved how Claire and Miles were there for each other and how they both grew so much during the story. Their romance was beautiful, but I loved how the focus was really on Claire and her journey to discover who she would be in this new life. I absolutely loved this book, I was sad when it ended. Courtney Walsh is such a talented writer and I enjoy her novels so much, they have just the right amount of humor, romance and depth! This one might be my new favorite, but I think it’s still tied with The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley.
Courtney, thanks for making me laugh out loud and cry all in the same story! You write with so much heart and humor and your books are impossible not to love!

I fell in love with the FMC in Brighter than Before! After her life takes a disastrous turn and she reinvents herself (with the help of her daughter) Claire captured my heart. I also love having Chicago as the backdrop of a gorgeous romance!
Claire is taking control of her life after a messy divorce. She sells her house and moves away from the life she’s known. She’s starting over and she has a list to help her do just that. She’s going to find her passions again.
Miles is her super hot new neighbor. He’s charming- maybe a little too charming with the amount of gorgeous young women who come and go from his apartment. The two become fast friends and Miles volunteers to help Claire get back out there and date.
Claire experiences the most cringiest dates, makes new friends, realizes what she wants in life, and maybe, just maybe she falls in love.
What I loved:
🍪 The vulnerability of Claire
🍪 The outgoing friends she makes
🍪The relationship between Claire and her daughter
🍪How messy life can be and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but it will be okay
🍪Miles- could he be any sweeter?!
🍪All the dates
🍪Trivia
🍪Claire’s newly found community
Oh my goodness. Courtney always get me in my feels while making me laugh. This is my new favorite of hers (but let’s be honest, they’re all my favorite). Pick this book up if you’re in the mood to laugh, cringe (in the best way), and maybe get a little misty eyed. All the stars for this one!
Firstly, I want to say thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction Publishers and Courtney Walsh for providing me with an ARC of this book 'Brighter than Before.'
This book was so wonderful, and I am so glad that I got the chance to read it. It's such a heart-warming read, and the characters were so likeable.
This book follows a woman named Claire who goes through a divorce, and decides to pack up her life and start a new chapter elsewhere. We go with her on her journey to finding herself again, as more than just a mother and a wife, whilst also getting back on her feet, and working out what exactly she wants from life.
My review just doesn't do this book justice - if you want a feel good book with some deeper themes like divorce, loneliness, but also building good friendships and following your dreams, this is the book for you. I felt so inspired after reading this book!
If there was book that was a love letter about learning to live again after heartbreak and humiliation then this is it. Courtney Walsh is a mastermind at swooney, heart felt, spice free romances with the most lovable in depth characters. This story follows Claire who is a newly divorced mom in her 40s as she navigates moving to a new city and answering the question “what do I want”.
This book had me feeling everything right from the beginning.
Out loud laughable awkward moments one minute and crying with sniffles the next.
Claire is so genuine and lovable right from the beginning that you’re sitting on the edge of your seat the entire book hoping she gets everything good in life thrown her way!

This book was e v e r y t h i n g.
I LOVED stepping into the story of a woman in her 40s - midlife and in many ways, starting over. I am so used to reading rom-coms centred on women in their 20's, so it felt incredibly refreshing to follow someone strong and capable in midlife as she wrestled with insecurity, regret, and the grief of a life that did not unfold the way she expected. Being in my 40's, it simply felt honest and deeply relatable. It's rare to see that season portrayed with so much dignity and hope (in the rom-com world). 🥰
There was warmth, humour and wit that keeps you up reading this in one sitting. It had a slight Katherine Center vibe (while still being unmistakably Courtney Walsh and her brilliance in Rom Com's)!
This story feels like a reminder that it is never too late for joy, courage, or a new beginning. 🥹🥰
P.S - Add a PS that Walsh could do a book about Minnie (or even Ava)!
Thank you to NetGalley, I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own..
Loved this book!!! So heartfelt and moving. It was so lovely to read about a real woman, in her 40s, going through a divorce and having to restart her life. It felt so true and honest. I loved watching the growth Claire had during the whole book. It made my heart warm and happy in a way that so grown up and mature.

What an amazing read.
There was something about Claire’s journey that felt raw and very real. This isn’t some over-the-top dramatic storyline. This kind of thing actually happens in real life. Marriages fall apart. People wake up one day and realise the life they built isn’t the life they want anymore. And then they have to figure out how to begin again.
This is my first Courtney Walsh book and I truly get it now. The writing felt mature, reflective, and hopeful without glossing over the hard parts. I loved that it wasn’t just about romance. It was about identity. About asking yourself, “What do I want now?” and having the courage to rebuild around that answer.
The romance was soft and heartwarming, but what stayed with me most was Claire choosing herself. It felt empowering in a quiet, believable way. Such a beautiful, hopeful read.
Thank you to NetGalley, Courtney Walsh, and Thomas Nelson Fiction Publishing House for the ARC. 💛

If you’re in the mood for a warm, feel-good story about starting over, ***Brighter than Before* by Courtney Walsh** is such a perfect pick.
Claire Karadec’s life falls apart in her forties—her marriage ends in a very public way, and suddenly her picture-perfect life is gone. Instead of letting fear win, she makes a bold plan: move to Chicago, make a real friend, find a job she loves, and take life one brave step at a time.
What follows is a mix of late-night journaling, disastrous (and hilarious) first dates, rediscovering passions like baking, and building connections she never expected—including with her off-limits neighbor, Miles. It’s about second chances, creating your own family of choice, and learning to listen to what you truly want.
This book is uplifting, witty, and full of heart—perfect for anyone who loves stories about new beginnings, self-discovery, and the little joys that come when you finally let yourself live.

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh is a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud story that feels refreshingly real. I absolutely loved the humor and how relatable the characters were—especially in the small, everyday moments that made them feel like real people instead of polished romance tropes.
What stood out most to me was how honestly this book explores adults dating after divorce, right in the middle of busy, complicated, real life. It was such a welcome change from the over-romanticized, whirlwind love stories of young, carefree couples. Instead, this story focuses on growth, healing, and the courage it takes to try again—both in relationships and in life. At its core, Brighter Than Before is about facing your fears, learning from your past, and becoming a better, braver version of yourself—and it delivers all of that with warmth, heart, and so much charm.
I will read whatever Courtney Walsh chooses to right. She never fails to make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. This newest book is no different.
Claire starts over in a new city after her husband cheats on her with a younger woman. Miles is the handsome, charming neighbor next door who has sworn off relationships. Follow along as Claire finds new friends and new dreams in Chicago. This is a squeaky clean, but also swoon worthy romance.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
holy macaroni this book was good 👍🏻 and i was sucked in from the very first “no,yeah”
a 40 year old woman ((claire)) going through an awful divorce moves to new city to heal, find herself and start over.
i feel so often in romances like this, we often jump from heartbreak to falling in love and we miss that middle part when the main character heals for the sake of getting to the “romance” bits.
this book does an amazing job of honoring the journey of the messy middle bits. you get to see claire through her journey all the way from *gasp* trying new food to betting on herself and opening a bakery. in the middle, there’s bad first dates, new friendship and found family, exploring and new city and discovering who she is and what she really wants, and best of all banter and yearning for miles 😍
no spice. all swoon.
courtney walsh never misses.
Oh what a joy this was to read. Over the years Courtney Walsh has become one of my favorite authors. I can always count on her to make me either laugh, cry, or both! This new addition to her works was no exception. I especially love that Claire is 46 years old. Reading a love story from the perspective of someone out of their twenties and who has lived a fairly full life already is so refreshing! 10/10 recommend. Thank you for this one, Courtney ❤️

I absolutely adored this book! What a wonderful story of finding yourself after a divorce. A story of going after what you want. A story of being strong and having good friends that actually care about you. A story of starting over for YOURSELF! I absolutely loved watching Claire grow as her own person after decades of being a wife and mother. She did it with the help of new friends, her daughter and an unexpected man who would end up being her second chance at love. Entertaining. I loved everything about this story. A beautiful sweet romance.

This uplifting, heartfelt story is a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to start over. After a devastating discovery ends her marriage, Claire Karadec leaves behind her picture-perfect life and takes a leap of faith—moving to Chicago with nothing but a simple list of hopes for a fresh start.
Through new friendships, rediscovering her love of baking, and new friendships, Claire slowly rebuilds her confidence and begins to imagine a life that truly belongs to her. Along the way, an unexpected connection with her charming neighbor, Miles, adds a little extra sweetness to the journey.
Warm, inspiring, and full of heart, this story celebrates second chances, courage, and the joy of choosing your own path. Five stars.
Yes, I am now obsessed with @courtneywalsh reads. I plan to devour them all.
Make sure you add this one to your TBR pile when it comes out in June! Thank you @netgalley for this early release.
I loved it. It's all the feels without the spice. No one fell in love in two days, either.
It's a story of finding yourself again after your life falls apart. Do any of us know who we really are anyway? Claire leaves everything she knows behind to start over in the windy city of Chicago.
Follow along as Claire tries new things, crosses items off her list, and realizes her value. She's funny, serious, silly, and insecure.
The chapters are the perfect length... you know I dislike long chapters. The relationship with her daughter is fabulous, and her new neighbor across the way brings humor to the story!

It's rare that I don't love one of Courtney's stories. And this is no exception. This book, about a marriage that falls apart, a new life starting for Claire as she moves from Denver to Chicago, with her list of things to do to push her out of her comfort zone. Move to a different city ✔️. Eat a food she hasn't tried before ✔️. Make a new friend ✔️. Find love..... This is the most endearing story of life as she knew it taken from he and her starting to realize that she didn't have the life she truly wanted. The creativity that Courtney has in molding a story about these characters that is honest and entertaining and realistic is refreshing and such a gift. I dare someone to read this book and NOT become invested in these characters that will have you cheering for them by the end of the story. This is in my top five for her.

I really liked seeing Claire change from a traumatized divorcee into healing and being able to form relationships again. Her goals for herself and seeing her relationship with Miles blossom were really fun to read about. Walsh has really found her niche with first-person narrators who blossom as the story unfolds, and I am here for it as many times as she wants to do it. Her books have been my favorites in the Christian romance genre (in romances in general, really) since she wrote The Happy Life of Isadora Bentley. I can't wait for the next one to come out, and this one hasn't even been released yet. They are just enchanting, and I find myself cheering for her heroines as they figure out how to become their best selves. Bravo, Courtney Walsh! You did it again!
Post-divorce books are becoming more common in romance lately. Not that it’s a bad thing, it’s actually a great thing that stories are tackling divorce and the idea of going after something better for yourself, now that it’s no longer such a taboo. What really stood out for me in this book, though, was Claire’s self-exploration.
As mothers and wives, we do lose a part of ourselves, not because we want to, but because we simply don’t have the time or energy to nurture it. As the years pass, we just go with the flow. I felt devastated for Claire 💔 because she has a husband who constantly shoots down her ideas and brilliance when they’re for her own growth, yet expects her to step up whenever it benefits his company or work. It might sound far-fetched when written like this, but in reality, it happens to women all the time.
I’m lucky to have a very supportive husband, and even luckier that I’ve managed to reconnect with some of my pre-marriage and pre-baby hobbies, while also developing new interests. I’ve accepted that there’s a part of me I’ll never fully get back, and that’s part of growing up, but I’m not giving up on discovering what else is out there for me, with the love and support of my family ✨
Claire didn’t have that support, which is why her journey hurt so much to read. This exploration of losing and rediscovering oneself is written beautifully and should be read by women in every phase of life - single, in a relationship, married, or post-marriage. We can’t lose our spark. We have to hold on to it and make it shine even brighter than before. ✨

In Brighter than Before, Claire moves from Denver to Chicago for a fresh start following her divorce. She doesn't know anybody, her daughter is studying abroad, and it's Claire's chance to find herself. Importantly, along the way, Claire also proves to her herself that she is worthy of so much more than she thought before.
This is a romance, as Courtney Walsh is famous for. But I also found that this book had more depth than some of her others. It wasn't just a romance between two characters, but rather it was a journey of self discovery for a middle aged woman who found herself starting over when she never thought that she would. There are many friendships and found family developed throughout this book, and there is also a stubbornness that I think we all learn really well as we age.
I think this is one of Walsh's best novels.
I love Courtney Walsh’s books and I pick up anything she writes . I loved this book because the character she wrote in this book was older .
This was such a good book I highly recommend it
Thank you NetGalley and publishers for my copy

If there’s two things I love in a story, it’s found family and self-discovery. Brighter than Before has both with a pinch of baking (another fave) and an older FMC as well as an HEA. I mean, if you’re on the lookout for a feel good story reminiscent of 90s rom-coms, you have found the perfect book. The characters, the plot, the growth, the antics, the MMC… *chef’s kiss*.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this as an ARC. All opinions are my own.
So good!!!! I stayed up way past my bedtime finishing this book.
I fell in love with Courtney Walsh's writing when I read My Phony Valentine and My Lucky Charm a few years ago. Her characters always seem to jump off the page and live in my brain. I end up feeling like I know these people in real life.
I would definitely be Claire's food-court friend. I would also love it if one of the units in her complex was an AirB&B because I would for sure want to stay there, soak up the court yard that Miles designed and meet her fun YouTuber older neighbor lady.
Claire's ex-husband, John, was appropriately unlikable and was giving "Jasper" from the movie, The Holiday. Because John made me think of Jasper from The Holiday, my brain tried to make me think of Miles as Jack Black's character (Also named Miles in the movie!) but our Miles' physical description was not described at all like Jack Black. Miles also resembled a little bit of a Joe Fox, in email form, from You've Got Mail. He was in Claire's corner so hard and I was here for it.
The dating scenes were so amusing to read. Duffy was a hilarious addition to the "cast" and I love all the side characters who helped fill out the story. Sometimes a book can lose something when it has too many side characters, but these were all described in such a way that it was easy to keep track of them while reading.
Thanks to NetGalley for my advanced reader copy. I can't wait to buy the physical copy to add to my Courtney Walsh collection. Highly recommend you read this one, too--especially if you love reading about middle aged women rediscovering themselves and if you love sweet, closed door romances. <3

I loved this book. What a perfect ROM-COM. It was funny, a little predictable at times, but also incredibly heartwarming. I found myself truly invested in Claire’s journey as she tried to build a new life. It had the perfect balance of humor, emotion, and romance. It’s never too late to start over.
Bonus - it’s set in Chicago.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the advance reader copy.
First I want to Thank NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for giving me this complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book can only be described as a breath of fresh air. It felt hopeful, tender, and full of heart. It made me feel giddy, it made me tear up, and it had me laughing out loud many times. I’m definitely starting a list! I will add the last line as well.
Claire’s story was so beautiful. Her insecurities and her growth felt relatable. I wasn’t just cheering her on alongside the other characters. I was cheering for myself too. This book felt personal. It felt encouraging.
Miles is definitely a book boyfriend. But not just because he’s charming. He’s supportive! That’s attractive. There’s something special about a man who believes in you before you fully believe in yourself.
Big Ewww to John, to Roger, and to Barry. Disgusting!
This story left me smiling and hopeful. I truly loved it.
OHMYGOSH, Courtney Walsh just keeps winning my heart with every book of hers I read. I can't remember when I last read one of her novels that didn't earn an easy 5 stars from me and I blew through this sweet life-after-divorce journey with an addicted ease. I love that Courtney serves niches that are harder to come by -- mature characters, love without explicit intimacy, and proof that non-toxic characters can still have depth. Like her other books, I laughed out loud, felt my heart swell, cheered on our FMC, and loved the example of the MMC. I love reading books where our characters are relatable and accessible and Claire was a joy. She navigated grief, cringey moments, and taking on a new chapter in life in a kind, refreshing, and inspired way and I absolutely LOVE her. Brighter Than Before is the epitome of why Courtney's books are my comfort, my constant, and an auto-and instant read from me. Will be raving and recommending this to everyone.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to review this ARC.
What a fun and unique book! Starting over, second chances, and rediscovering self, Courtney Walsh has written a beautiful book that helps us realize it's never too late to follow your heart.
This was a super quick read. Claire is in her late 40s and after finding out her husband isn't who she thought he was, she finds herself starting over. But how does she do that when what she's known is living life according to someone else? She decides that it's time to take control and redesign her life for herself.
I loved the dynamic of Claire and her daughter, Minnie. The relationship between the two of them was really well developed and felt authentic. They reminded me of Lorelai and Rory in that they aren't just mother and daughter, but they're true friends as well.
I also loved Miles and his constant support of Claire. He truly empowered her to live life on her own terms. Not to mention, their relationship dynamic was so sweet.
I know it's already been said, but this really is like a Hallmark movie. It's closed door (no explicit scenes) and clean language. This is one that I'll be recommending to everyone!

I really enjoyed Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh. I finished it in just under two days because it was just such an easy, engaging read.
The characters felt very real. Claire is relatable and imperfect in a way that makes you root for her, and Miles is supportive, a little persistent, and genuinely kind. I also loved the friendships she builds along the way. The community aspect of the story adds a lot of warmth without feeling overdone.
One thing that stood out to me was the character development. Claire’s growth feels gradual and believable, which made the story feel grounded instead of rushed.
This book is also an official pick for our book club, which is a big deal because in more than seven years, we’ve only selected romance four times. The reason this one made the list is that it’s written about adults and real life in a thoughtful way, with strong character growth and a story that feels authentic rather than overly dramatic.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC, it's been a complete pleasure to read!
I loved this book! Courtney Walsh has quickly become a new favorite. This book was a fun romcom but I appreciated the fact that the main characters were middle aged (something we don’t see enough of in this genre!). It added a layer of depth to their romance and journey as characters that is unique to falling in love in that stage of life. The found friendships aspect of this book was charming, and it’s one I’d highly recommend!
I literally finished this book in one sitting!! I absolutely loved Miles and Claire! This book wasn’t a dual POV, and usually I really miss seeing both sides. HOWEVER, it was written so beautifully that I didn’t even notice.
This clean and wholesome romance completely stole my heart. The chemistry between Miles and Claire was palpable, and their easy friendship-to-lovers relationship was so good!
I also loved the support from their children, Claire’s newfound freedom, and the friendships she built along the way. There honestly wasn’t a single thing I didn’t enjoy about this book.
Absolutely a 5⭐️ must-read!!

I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced as much second-hand embarrassment for a character as I did for Claire in that first scene 🙈😅. I have to say, it really set her up for a character arc over the length of the book lol. It’s that character arc that drives the story—Claire finding herself after her life implodes when her husband cheats on her.
In classic Walsh fashion, the narrative is well balanced with humor and a unique first -person pov voice.
I really loved Miles. I loved how they became friends first and their relationship grew from there. Their banter was fun and he was just a really great guy and great for her.
I enjoyed this book

Courtney Walsh delivers with this one! When Claire’s life fall apart, she decides to take control and find happiness. This is a fun and laugh out loud story as she finds herself, her strengths, and a new chance at life.
Brighter than Before is categorized as "Chick Lit". Claire self destructs in a publicly humiliating way (after her ex leaves her for the mistress). Her ex and his parents have never been very kind to Claire and seem to take great pleasure in stomping out her dreams. Claire needs to get away from the small town and start over, so she sells the "marital home" and moves to a Chicago suburb.
So Claire meets new people and rebuilds her life and dreams. Her neighbor and 20-something daughter set her up with a dating profile and she starts dating again.
I thought that Brighter than Before was charming. Courtney Walsh has many books published, this is only the third book that I've read by her (and it won't be my last). Love that there was a Midwest local for this book.
Many thanks to NetGalley, author Courtney Walsh and publisher Thomas Nelson Fiction for approving my request to read the advance read copy of Brighter than Before in exchange for an honest review. Approx 350 pages, publication date is expected to be Jun 9, 2026.
Thank you Net Galley for an advanced copy!
Such a sweet book! Heart warming, cozy, feel good read.
Courtney has a talent for making you FEEL what her characters feel.
Claire- I loved her and reading as she grew and healed throughout the book.
Loved this read. I’d give this as a gift for people trying to get back into reading / start reading.
This book was incredible and seemed to find me at the right time in my life too! Rom-com GOLD!
I really took in when nothing in your life will change if you aren't willing to make an effort to change it or your choices. The choice to feel creative and alive again after a hard time you've just gone through and you lost who you were to make others happy. And when brought just wanting have real friends, I felt that as someone going through something similar.
You're never too old to discover what makes you happy or who you are. Love the characters and heir journeys throughout the story. I enjoyed every minute of this read and my first Courtney Walsh book too! I definitely will be picking up another of hers!

I enjoy reading Courtney Walsh's books. This amazing rom-com has the perfect blend of rawness and humor. After 20-plus years of marriage, Claire, newly divorced, has to answer the question: "What do you really want?" Her journey is one of trying new things, embarking on adventures, making new friends, and finding herself—all in a new city. I loved the characters in Brighter than Before, the storyline, and the developing romance between Claire and Mitch.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
POV: you pick up a “sweet” romance and suddenly you’re smiling at your Kindle the entire time. 🥹📖
Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh was such a heart-warming romance and honestly one of those books that just makes you feel good while reading it.
There’s no smut, but I didn’t miss it at all because the chemistry between Miles and Claire was so genuine and emotional. Their connection felt real, natural, and had me rooting for them the whole time. 💛
One of my favourite things about this book was the way it was written — the story is broken up with texts to Claire’s daughter Minnie and journal entries, which made it feel so personal and added so much depth to the story. I loved getting those little glimpses into her thoughts and life.
It’s sweet, comforting, and full of heart — the perfect cosy romance when you want something uplifting.
Obsessed is an understatement. Courtney Walsh continues to slay the romance scene, IMO. Her books step away from the typical formula of heavy trauma or excessive spice and instead focus on something that feels just as powerful, real life. And she brings that to the page so beautifully in Brighter Than Before.
Claire’s development was one of my favorite parts of this story. We meet her after her divorce, working through very real feelings of betrayal and figuring out who she is now that her life looks completely different. Her journey felt incredibly authentic. Watching her step outside her comfort zone, take risks, and finally start choosing herself was so satisfying. It’s honestly refreshing to read characters who are mature and self-aware!
And then there’s Miles, a truly swoony MMC. From the very beginning I was rooting for him and Claire. He’s kind, steady, and exactly the kind of love interest that makes you smile. Their dynamic felt natural! The way their relationship developed felt genuine and hopeful.
The "found family" that Claire creates is so beautiful and what we all hope to have in our lives!
If you’re looking for a romance that focuses on healing, growth, and second chances, this one absolutely delivers!
Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Fiction and Courtney Walsh for a copy. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Oh my goodness, what a delightful book! Courtney Walsh is definitely a favorite author because her books always pick me up, but this one just was the sweetest book to me. It follows Claire, a woman in her mid-40s who had caught her husband cheating on her and after another embarrassing moment, decides to change things in her life and move to Chicago. As she makes all of these decisions to improve her life, she realizes the importance of staying true to herself.
Claire was a fantastic character, and I found myself laughing out loud and swooning multiple times in this book. If you need something light and appreciate fun and sweet romances, this one is DEFINITELY for you!
This is such a feel good uplifting book. I love that the characters weren’t drinking in bars and their dates were fun and different like visiting a museum or going to trivia at a bar but ordering a soda. I wish this was more normalized in romance books. This was a sweet story and left me smiling to the end.
Courtney Walsh consistently writes feel good romances that are sweet and uplifting, and keep the physical relationship “closed door”. One thing I enjoyed about this story was that the main character was older. She had a history, a mess to work through, and a new chapter to start. I found her mid-life redirect to be refreshing.
I absolutely loved the neighborhood setting in NY and wish that I could actually visit, walk the streets, and meet all the characters.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the opportunity to read and review this book ahead of publication.
This book came into my life at the exact right moment. Our main character, Claire, is smack in the middle of going through changing her life and I feel like I am starting to feel stuck and need to do the same. The story was full of funny embarrassing moments, as well as thoughtful moments about growth and development as we move through life. We don’t always have to have everything together and we need to learn to take life as it comes and handle what is in front of us. Courtney Walsh did a wonderful job bringing these characters to life and even the side characters played big roles in the development of the story. I personally loved all the Chicago representation since I have grown up in the suburbs of Chicago for my entire life and that the main character was in her 40s.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for this eARC.
What a charming little book! Loved Claire, loved Miles, loved the setup. The farmers market mixup annoyed me but I appreciated how it was cleaned up and how it didn’t drag on too long. This book was a bright spot on a rainy day.

ARC REVIEW - Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Brighter than Before is a book about a second chance at life, about going through the worst experience you can imagine and then coming out brighter than before. It's about human connection, facing your fears, and being open to possibilities. It's about love and hope and renewal. And I loved it.
Claire was at rock bottom at the beginning of this story, and seeing her slowly but determinedly ask herself "What do you really want" and then proceed to take steps to get those things (even when it was scary, even when it was hard) was truly inspiring. I loved that Miles had also been through things, and that they could relate on so many levels but were scared to take chances in different ways. It led to an interesting dynamic that carried through the story and I felt like it added depth to their characters. I also loved that this was a closed-door no spice story. I think it really added to the depth of the emotions and feelings of the characters, and we got to see their connection on a true emotional level, rather than surface level.
The community and found family/friends in this book was lovely to read about. I loved how all of the connections were formed. It was a journey that I was very happy to go on and I feel like everyone should run out and read this book. There truly is a little something for everyone in here.
This story creates a warm, uplifting story centered on growth, grace, and second chances. I loved the characters and the encouraging read that this was. It leaves you feeling hopeful and grounded.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review. My opinion expressed in this review is completely my own.
The description said this book was a warm, witty and uplifting read and that is exactly what it was.
Once I started reading this, I wanted to keep reading and a few night I read until the wee hours of the morning.
After the first chapter I was drawn in my Claire and her story. I knew where the story was headed when Claire moved to Chicago, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading her journey and the bumps in the road. I literally laughed out loud at Claire's fountain incident description. I loved the fact that Claire had a journal and with the fresh start she wanted to learn and embrace new experiences.
To me, this can be a perfect winter read to pick up as the nighttime comes early and the weather is colder outside, or it is also a perfect summer read by the pool or beach.
This is my first book by Courtney Walsh and I would definitely be interested in reading more by this author.
Courtney Walsh has become one of my favorite romcom authors and Brighter Than Before is one of her best novels!
A year after her husband’s affair and their subsequent divorce, Claire is still spiraling downwards. Tired of being angry and living in the past, she decides to create a new life for herself. With the support of her adult daughter, Minnie, she moves to Chicago and as part of her new beginning she decides to try things that scare her. When Minnie sets up a dating profile for her, Claire dives back into the dating game. Her new friend Miles and Minnie collaborate to set her up with the most promising guys. But could her best match be the one who’s right in front of her?
I love Claire's plucky nature and how she was determined to create a new life for herself. At first I wondered why Miles was so against relationships and if he was an actual flirt. Of course, it made sense in the end, but for awhile I was suspicious. As for John ... the less said about him, the better. It was exciting to watch Claire check items off her list and put down roots in her new home. I cheered her on every step of the way.
Those who love romcoms and clean romances will enjoy this book. Thank you, Thomas Nelson, for providing this book for review through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Another banger from Courtney and I am so sad it's over. I love every Courtney Walsh book I read and they never fail to boost my spirits.
Claire is starting over in a new city in her 40s after her marriage ends in her husband having an affair. Miles is her new neighbor/apartment owner who is friendly to everyone and comes to welcome her in. They immediately hit it off, even if Claire isn't so sure after what she went through and tries to push him away. I enjoyed the progression of Claire finding her way in a new city and is trying re build her life. She was so adorable. Miles was the perfect match for her and he was just as fun, especially when he was so confident in finding her a good date, when we all can see they are the perfect match. The whole community of this apartment she joined brought the found family aspect in this story and was so heartwarming when they cheered on Claire to pursue her baking dreams. Courtney's books are always so inspiring and full of fun and this one was exactly that.
Thank you Netgalley and Courtney Walsh for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
Every time I read a book by Courtney I think to myself “ this one can’t be as good as the last one.” But then she proves me wrong and this one is no different . I really enjoyed this one and especially as the character is closer to my age. This book is about growing from your past and sometimes the first person you have are not always the right one for you. Both the characters in the book have been victims of a cheating spouse so they understand each other on that level . He is gushy after the evens of his past relationships and rightly so but when you find the right person you just know .
Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh
I got this book via @netgalley as ARC and heres my thoughts about it, which are all mine.
Honestly I can say I love everything what Courtney writes, so naturally I was exited to read this one too. Claire stars over in her forties, and meet new people even it’s scary and get new friends.
This one is beautiful story! Mostly character growth, but also about friendships and new beginnings.
If youre looking for great story which has little bit depth to it without been too dramatic or anxious, this one is for you!

Courtney Walsh is one of my very favorite authors. I only found her a year or two ago but I've devoured several and have enjoyed them all. Her newest book, Brighter than Before, has to be one of my new favorites! I feel like this one was a little different than others that I've read where the character is a little older (40's) and divorce is involved. So this one can feel a little heavier at first but there was so much fun and sweetness about it too! I feel like Courtney Wash does such a great job with character development and oozing so much emotion off the pages. I loved both of the main characters, Claire and Miles, as well as the secondary characters. You just can't help but love the community that Claire has established for herself after some very real and hard life situations. If you're looking for a clean, swoony romance that deals with risking it all and starting over, this book is for you!
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for an eARC of this story. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
If you want a cozy read with funny characters and a great story. This book is for you! A perfect light read, for book lovers.

I've loved every Courtney Walsh book I've read but in my opinion, she is at her best in her women's fiction. Isadora Bentley and Summer of Yes are favorites I keep on my shelves and I only buy fiction I would read more than once. This one deserves a place beside them. Claire is someone I would definitely be friends with; I love to see older women represented in fiction and she is heart-kin in so many ways. While our life paths are very different, so many of the ways we see ourselves are the the same. I love the deep friendships she builds and the ways she comes to see herself and the world around her. Such a beautiful story of second chances!

Uplifting and inspiring, with a focus on personal growth and second chances. A heartfelt and feel-good romance. This book came to me at the right moment. I felt as if it was the wake-up call I was aiting for. Claire and I have so much in common, I love the way she finally was able to grab her life by the horns and to own it. I loved Minnie and also Miles. They were both very important cheerleaders in Claire's life. They were there for her, helped to lift her spirits, gave hare all the love. In a way, they created a wonderful family. Courtney Walsh created an incredible book. I hope many people love BtB as much as I did.
Thanks so much for the copy, NetGalley!
Such an amazing plot! I could not put the book down once I began reading it. I cannot wait for it to be released. It's at the top of my recommend list.

This book was so refreshing to read. Normal characters, going through real things and in their mid 40s? Oh I absolutely loved it all! Claire’s journey of finding herself through her divorce, moving to a new city, going on dates, falling in love… I never wanted it to end. Courtney Walsh’s storytelling is just so good - I now want to hear what will continue to happen with Claire and Miles. I’m fully invested in all of the characters.
I’m wondering to myself why I have never read any her books. They have been on my TBR list and I’m instantly putting them at the top (plus adding all of the others to my list). Thank you Courtney for creating a beautiful, clean, closed book romance that is full of redemption, love and hope. I cannot wait to read more of your books!

After a messy divorce in her forties, Claire hits reset and moves to Chicago to finally figure out what she wants from life. With help from new friends, nosy neighbors, and a dating profile her daughter secretly sets up, she starts rediscovering herself—and maybe even love—on her own terms.
I don’t even know why I love books like this so much, but this one just hit perfectly. It’s funny in that slightly chaotic, secondhand embarrassment way, while still being lighthearted and super easy to read and follow. What I really appreciated was how natural Claire’s character growth felt—you don’t just get it all at the end, you actually see her thoughts, her patterns, and how she slowly starts to change and understand herself. Even the side characters felt well done and added so much charm to the story. The whole atmosphere is so warm and inviting, the kind of book where you just sit, sip, and get completely cozy while reading. 💛📚

“Brighter than Before” by Courtney Walsh is an uplifting novel that reminds us that we do still have control over the choices that we make after life happens to us.
Claire is a woman in her forties whose life falls apart in a stunning and very public manner. Recently divorced, Claire is looking to find herself. With her daughter, Amelia (who she affectionately nicknamed Minnie) away at college, Claire is truly able to focus on herself for the first time since University.
Claire’s therapist challenges her by asking her a pointed question that she struggles to answer. After searching her heart for the truth, Claire makes a list of what she really wants. Seeing the list in black and white motivates Claire to pursue her dreams and aspire to achieve each of the items her list.
Claire’s personal growth throughout the novel is inspiring. It was heartwarming to see Claire’s confidence grow as she made major changes in her life.
I really loved reading about the fun and friendly cast of characters that surround Claire. The friendships that Claire made are deep and meaningful, even though they were relatively recent relationships, and her new friends were steadfast in their willingness to help her face adversity.
As Claire learns what truly matters to her in life, it brings her a renewed sense of purpose, true fulfillment and a feeling of belonging. I found myself cheering for Claire, and I felt proud of her as she chose who she wanted to become.
This was my first Courtney Walsh book, and I can promise you that it will not be my last! I plan to read “The Summer of Yes” by Courtney Walsh this summer! I so appreciate a clean romance book (and with no swearing) and I think I’ve found an author who excels in that genre.
I highly recommend “Brighter than Before”. This is a powerful story about reclaiming identity and recognizing one’s own worth.

Fantastic story about a woman who’s starting completely over and choosing to follow her dreams that leads to a happy ending!
I loved Claire and Miles together and their journey to finally admitting their feelings for one another. After Claire’s divorce to her cheating husband, I applauded her for deciding to move to Chicago because “she always wanted too.” She then found a friends who became her family and a love she never expected to find. This story was a shining star pointing out that it’s never too late to start over and pursue the life you want for yourself!
I appreciated that this book was wholesome and clean, no foul language or situations that made me uncomfortable while reading. This was my first Courtney Walsh book, and I’ll make sure to add more of her stories to my TBR! Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read Brighter than Before!

I love the way Claire sets out to find herself, knowing that she has made mistakes but ready to find who she is and what she actually wants. This book was so entertaining and yet still so REAL. It was also nice to read about someone closer to my age *ahem*.
Courtney Walsh has done it again. She takes hard relatable situations and turns them into stories of hope and love. This is a love after divorce romance and also a story of finding yourself even when it feels too late to start. I really enjoyed this book and if you are looking for a great romance to read during summer vacation, this is a great choice
Courtney Walsh is one of my favourite authors and I was so excited that I got a chance to read this fabulous book! The story had me hooked from the start. Claire's marriage ended in one of the worst ways possible and just when she thought things couldn't possibly get worse--they did. She ends up in a fountain, confronted by the entire country club, her ex-husband and his new fiance! After this humiliation, she decides that she is going to get her life back! With encouragement from her older daughter, she sells her house, moves to a new city and starts a new life for herself. She makes lists of things to do/try and starts crossing them off one at a time. In a fabulously written meet-cute, enter Miles, a very good looking neighbour and owner of the building her apartment is in. They develop a friendship, and he helps her cross things off her list and get back into dating. After several date disasters, Claire decides to take a break from dating and soon focuses on opening a bakery. That also doesn't go quite as planned, but Claire overcomes it all while surrounded by a group of people that are now her community....one that is there to support her through everything. Claire, and Miles, get the HEA they both deserve in the end! This is such a great book--get it on your TBR list immediately!

I won’t fall back, I fall forwards”. 🎶
Loved it!

Any Courtney Walsh book is an automatic read for me. I go into every book not sure how a new one could beat the last one I read. I am always wrong! Brighter than Before follows Claire whose whole life as she knew it has been blown up. After some time, she decides to start over and do things that scare her. One being moving halfway across the US to Chicago. (If you’re local you will love this element of the book so much!). She decides only she can determine to be happy. Through her journey she makes friends, does things that scare her, makes a huge career decision and finds love again, after some really funny blind dates. Walsh’s character development and easy to read writing style mae every book so fun to read. You immediately feel immersed intro the storyline. Her books always have happy endings and in today’s world, sometimes that’s the best escape we can ask for. This is your beach read if 2026. Thanks NetGalley for the advanced copy!

Review:
This was such a good read! I have followed Courtney Walsh and had her books on my tbr for a while now, but hadn’t picked one up yet. When I saw I was accepted for this arc, I knew it was finally the right time to start my CW journey and I was not disappointed. In fact, I was incredibly impressed and can’t wait to read more from her.
This story follows Claire Karadec, a recently divorced woman who is faced with having to start over. After dealing with her husband’s infidelity and the humiliating aftermath, she decides to move to Chicago to start living her life for herself, as well as figure out who she is outside of being a wife and a mother. Through plenty of trial and error, Claire finds herself again and meets several new friends along the way. Most notably, her neighbor and landscape architect, Miles Westbrook, who may just be everything she’s ever wanted.
Claire’s story was so relatable. The best part is that you don’t have to be 46 and divorced to understand and connect with her. Life has a way of throwing you curveballs at any time, no matter how old you are or where you’re at in life. As a 25 y/o who has no idea what she’s doing or where she’s going, I saw so much of my own thoughts and feelings in Claire. The author doesn’t pretend like everything is sunshine and rainbows the moment Claire gets to Chicago either. In fact, there’s more than one moment that goes awry for her, but Claire never gives up, even if she really really wants to. I loved the support system that she was able to build, and the way they continuously had her back.
As for Miles, I absolutely adored him. He was realistically written, so he has his hang ups, but he is still such a great friend and partner. The banter between him and Claire was so fun and enjoyable to read. They had so much chemistry and just clicked so well. Their story is the type to make you say “just one more chapter” at 3 a.m. because you just can’t wait any longer to see them together. They are definitely one of my favorite book couples that I have ever read.
Every character in this story was so well done and I thoroughly enjoyed them. There was just as much care and attention put into them as there was with Claire and Miles. They brought so much life to the story and complimented the main characters so well.
I was so genuinely impressed by Courtney Walsh’s writing. I’m never sure what to expect with a new to me author, but she did not disappoint. Although I usually prefer dual pov, single pov (Claire’s perspective) made so much sense for the story and I didn’t feel like I was missing out on any context where Miles was concerned. He was still thoroughly fleshed out which I appreciated.
Overall, this was such a good book and definitely a contender for my favorite book of 2026. I’m truly in awe of how much I enjoyed this story and I cannot wait to continue reading more from Courtney Walsh in the future.

This book was amazing! I could barely put it down. The love story was truly swoon-worthy. I love how Claire went from the, seemingly, perfect country club life to a life she actually loved. Highly recommend.

I personally gave this five stars. One thing I really enjoyed was the banter between the MCs. Courtney Walsh consistently writes great dialogue, and Brighter Than Before did not disappoint.
Two things I was not a fan of: 1) the part in the opening scene when she dives in the fountain. It’s not realistic and makes her seem crazy, not brokenhearted and hurt. It’s kinda hard to believe there’s any sanity there after that, yet we are supposed to just go along with it like that’s a normal response for a divorced woman, and 2) at the end when the ex just shows up like he’s still in charge and trying to lord authority over her that he absolutely does not have… and her boyfriend just says goodnight see ya tomorrow??? I realize she can handle the schmuck, but her boyfriend should stick around and have her back. Offering support doesn’t make her weak, it shows the ex she has chosen a better future.
But, I still loved this and the final date they went on was so brilliant. Very swoony. I was screaming from the start when she was looking for a job that she should totally open her own shop! I love her front porch idea, exceptionally charming. And all three of the daughters were a hoot. I’d want to be friends with them. Great book, I cannot wait for the pub date so I can recommend this to everyone.

I just dramatically hit finished (since this is an E-ARC) and took a breath.
A+++, 5⭐️, and 45 thumbs up!
This book was fabulous. I’d never read Courtney Walsh book before, but holy moley I want to check our past catalog.
First, as a 49 year old woman with grown kids and a lifetime of trials and tribulations I have to say that it was a nice and welcomed surprise to realize I was reading about someone who could be me. I dig a book that represents us 40+ year olds in an authentic way. A woman rarely has a linear path in life. We have stages of figuring it out or starting over. First time living on your own, first love and/or marriage, pushing a bit of your own identity to the side as you guide your children into adulthood, maybe having to figure out who you are after the death of a parent or breakup of a marriage….time after time we’re figuring ourselves out.
This book’s theme is that. Yes, it starts with the breakup of a marriage but it’s just the backstory. The true story is watching Claire figure life out on her own, push her own boundaries, and find love, but it’s not what you think. She’s like a butterfly and blossoms from hating herself, to liking herself and then the realization that she loves herself. That is the best kind of redemption in my book.
Read this book, love this book, and thank me later.

As Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh starts out, Claire Karadec feels like a failure. Her marriage is washed up after publicly finding out her spouse had an affair with a younger woman. To try to make sense of her hurt and sadness, Claire goes to therapy. The therapist encourages her to make a list of her dreams in her journal in response to being asked, What do I really want? As a result, Claire decides if she wants a new start in life, she needs to act on her list to start a new story.
At first, I wasn't sure about Brighter Than Before. It started off quite a bit different than this author's other books. But as I went along, it grew on me, and by the end of it, I was cheering Claire on with the rest of her new friends.
Then there is Miles who lives in Claire's apartment complex. I genuinely liked Miles from the start. . .I wanted him to let go of his fears too so was also cheering him on. I always love that Courtney Walsh gives me a HEA ending too. This is a clean, kisses only book.
Brighter Than Before is full of themes of redemption, hope and personal growth. I liked that Claire is an older main character--as are many of the characters. I loved seeing Claire face her fears and take steps to make her dreams come true. She also makes friends and I loved her friends in this book. I also love that when she faces setbacks, her friends come through for her.
As someone who also journals and processes her thoughts on paper, I loved seeing Claire journal and that her journal helped her grow personally. Brighter Than Before could be an encouraging book to give someone who is also forced to start over after a divorce they really didn't want.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Claire finally decides to reinvent herself and choose her own path after living her life for her husband (now ex-husband) and raising her daughter. It wasn't easy for her to do. It was hard for her to trust herself and her decisions, but she did it. This was a great read!

Courtney Walsh does it again! Raw emotion, real growth, relatable cast of characters.
Claire is in her late 40s and starting over. She makes a list of goals to help her discover what she really wants in life. As she goes through her list, she finds more than just herself; she creates a life with meaning.
I really enjoyed this book and traveling Claire’s journey of healing with her.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC.
I love how Courtney Walsh's books make me feel like I've grown a ton plus experienced an epic love story by the time I reach the end. She is so adept at bringing all the very best meaningful ideas and attitudes out in her work and the romances she writes are just the swooniest. This latest installment is no exception. I adored how empowering and healing Claire's story was. And even though I've never gone through what Claire had to overcome, Courtney's beautiful words inspired a ton of introspection and encouragement for me during a challenging time that I'm currently going through. I loved everything about this!
So many good life lessons: finding joy after heartbreak, being brave even when you don’t feel like it, dreaming big and going for it, you’re never too old to try something new, the importance of real friendships…and so much more!
As a 40 year old woman who loves romcoms it was really nice to read about main characters close to my age. Claire was very relatable.
The romance was top tier! So sweet.

Perfection. Another fantastic story from Courtney Walsh. This would make a great movie.
When you think your life is completely ruined, but it turns out you could have a so-much-better life. Melt worthy—and I'm not just talking about the baked goods—this is a story about becoming brighter and more beautiful than ever.
Claire is divorced and reclaiming the life she wanted before she got married. She isn't exactly sure what that life is, but she always wanted to live in Chicago, so here she is in a lovely apartment complex with two new neighbor-friends. The helpful busybody older lady and the attractive middle-aged man who has a thing for much younger women. I loved all the characters.
Miles falls in love with Claire but doesn't know it because he refuses to be in another relationship. Ever. What do you call it when you spend time every day with the woman across the courtyard? He calls it friendship. Of course there is romance, and it is the sweetest slow burn. The growth of their relationship is perfectly paced. A lovely group of friends and family bring much needed support to the execution of Claire’s dream as well as Miles and Claire’s relationship.
This fun and hope-filled story authentically explores the heartbreak, insecurities, and challenges of overcoming damage from a bad marriage. There are also plenty of laugh-out-loud moments. Picking favorites is so difficult, but I think this will be my favorite book by Courtney. It's such a great story about finding friends and making friends with yourself. I loved the laugh out loud moments. I loved the introspective moments. I loved the romance. Ok. I loved Miles.
What I loved:
🧁 Found family.
🧁 Strangers-to-more
🧁 Online dating
🧁 Mid-life romance
🧁 Big city living
🧁 Starting over

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I honestly loved Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh it’s one of those books that just makes you feel good while also hitting a bit deeper emotionally.
Claire is such a relatable main character. She’s in her 40s, starting over after a divorce, and just trying to figure out what her life is supposed to look like now. Nothing about her feels perfect or unrealistic, which I really appreciated. Watching her slowly rebuild her confidence and step out of her comfort zone felt very real and actually quite inspiring.
And Miles… just genuinely likeable. He’s kind, patient, and feels like a real person rather than some perfect love interest. Their relationship didn’t feel rushed or over the top it develops naturally, starting from a really solid place, which made it even more believable and enjoyable to read.
There’s a nice mix of humour (some of the dating moments are awkward in a very real way 😅) and more emotional parts about starting over and figuring out what you actually want out of life. It’s not just a romance it’s more about growth and getting your spark back.
Overall, it’s warm, easy to read, and uplifting without being cheesy. Definitely a 5⭐ read for me.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Courtney Walsh for the ARC of this AMAZING BOOK!
If I could give this 6 stars, I would. Courtney Walsh is one of my all time favorite authors - solidified by Brighter than Before.
WOW DID I FLY THROUGH THIS BOOK! That’s when I know I have a special one on my hands.
Claire is still dealing with the effects of her divorce a year later - and one of the most awkward, public mishaps happens to her in the first chapter.
Claire decides to think of herself and move to Chicago, IL, to start over and learn who she is, other than a wife and a mom.
I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT!
As a child of divorce, this gave me insight as to how someone dealing with divorce might heal. Was it an extreme example? Sure. But Claire was able to have a healthy relationship with Minnie, her daughter, despite the divorce. I wish we would’ve gotten to see Minnie in person more, but I did love that she was still a big part of the story from overseas.
And MILES!
At first, I thought Miles was going to be a toxic male. But nope - he’s got some divorce trauma of his own that he’s working through. And honestly, although some of the conflict I was like 🤦♀️ - just communicate PLEASE - Miles always was supportive of Claire through her journey to be independent.
I loved learning about the different dates Claire went on. I genuinely felt I was there (and man, did I FEEL the same emotions she did on those dates). Courtney did a great job of detailing dating as an older woman. Most of the romance books I read are twenty somethings dating, so this was refreshing for me, as someone who’s turning 30 before too long 😳
Also I just love Claire’s community that she built and who came alongside her when things got rough. They remind me of my close friends - I am so grateful to have them in my life!
If you love clean romance books with happy endings, quirky main characters, Chicago, and of course baking, please read this book! It’s light, it’s adorable, it’s hopeful, it’s wonderful! Please pick this up when it’s published in June!

This was a delightful second chance romance that felt like a realistic look into making friends as you grow older and the struggles people face when needing to start over. I loved the connections the main character made and her development throughout the novel because it really shows it's never too late to change your life.
This was an enjoyable, funny, sweet, and clean romance. I loved Claire from the beginning and enjoyed watching her heal and take her life back. The book is entirely from her perspective and focuses heavily on her personal growth. I didn’t find the role of the MMC to be super strong, but he was likable and I loved that he was in her corner. I would recommend if you’re looking for something light and feel good.
Thank you to netgalley and publishers for this ARC.
Like mentioned in other reviews- this felt different than other books by Courtney, but in the best way! This was such a joy to read. I wanted to both devour it and also relish each page. I was rooting for Claire every step of her way. It was funny, uplifting, romantic, and made me want to gift Claire one of my son’s superhero capes and mask- because she is a super woman!!

This was such a sweet, uplifting novel about starting over after difficult life circumstances. Courtney Walsh has written a beautiful story that will keep you swept up in the pages! Lots of references to delicious baking...Before reading, you should probably have some baked goods on hand to enjoy during this little adventure to the heart of Chicago with the most endearing characters. I love a good story that inspires me to grow as a person while also simply enjoying the reading experience, and Brighter Than Before did exactly that. I received a complimentary eARC of this book. I was not expecting to give this one five stars (In fact I wasn't sure that I'd like it at all), but here we are. I don't want it to be overrrr - it's such a cute romance with strong themes of healing and second opportunities and trying again. Miles is hilarious and so sweet, and he absolutely deserves the MVP but Claire was also amazing too. 🫶🏼
At the end Begin Again by Taylor Swift was playing on repeat in my mind and I think that song pretty much sums up the story.
And now I want to go bake something.

i am very much looking forward to telling everyone i know about this book and promoting her work! it will be an amazing read and i can't wait to get more of her books
So good! The characters were likable and well-developed, and the story had enough unexpected twists to keep me fully engaged. It was especially refreshing to read about a main character who is close to my age, which made Claire’s journey feel even more relatable. The themes of self-discovery, starting over, and embracing second chances were woven beautifully throughout the novel. Claire was both inspiring and authentic, and I enjoyed watching her navigate challenges, grow stronger, and rediscover herself along the way.
Calling it, this is going to be 2026 book of the year for me. I enjoyed every single page, felt every single feel, laughed so much, read parts out loud to my family who all looked at me like I was crazy. Yes! A 40 something story of finding one's self, I loved it, I loved it. No more to be said.

This was honestly one of the best romance books I've read in a long time. It was a story where the characters felt real, the plot was interesting and layered, and the themes were on point, and I connected with them so much. Claire literally felt like a real person to me, and her character arc was so interesting to read about because I loved watching her grow from everything that happened to her. Miles was also SO perfect for Claire and it really showed. I loved everything about him: his humor, his gentleness, his advice, and how he loved seeing Claire become successful. It was so obvious that he and Claire had such good chemistry, and their love felt so real. The side characters were also adorable, and I love how much they loved Claire and became like their own little found family.
Overall, this book was stunningly written with an empowering message that I think readers can strongly connect with. This book had me giggling, smiling, highlighting so many good quotes, and crying up until the very last page. I can't wait for this book to be published and to read all of Courtney Walsh's other books!
I am so thankful for the opportunity to read Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh. I absolutely loved it. This story begins when Claire starts over in Chicago after a public display of her husband’s infidelity. Claire seeks to rediscover her true self with a fresh start in a new city, seeking to find her true self again, to pursue her passions and maybe find love too. Seeing Claire find a fresh start in this sweet romance was just what I needed. Thank you, Courtney Walsh, for another gem of a story.
I loved every minute spent reading this book— these characters are going to stick with me for quite awhile!
One of my favorite things about this author is her ability to craft some of the most relatable and loveable characters. I'm easily pulled into her storylines, cheering on the main characters as if we were old friends and anticipating their HEA moment.
I really enjoyed seeing Claire find the courage and strength to embrace a fresh start, re-discover herself and chase after her dreams. Watching her connect with people who uplifted her and supported her was incredibly sweet. And Miles , he just may be my favorite MMC I've read in awhile.

I absolutely loved this book. It was fun reading a middle age romance, and it completely won me over. The funny dates were such a highlight, and I couldn’t put it down. 5/5!
I loved this book!
Divorced, humiliated (that darn inner voice), and starting over in a new city... not something anyone wants to deal with, especially in your 40s.
Claire is a hot mess who is just trying to find herself after a nasty divorce.
Miles is her neighbor/ landlord who has sworn off relationships due to his own failed marriage.
I wont say more, read it yourself! 😉
I have nothing but age (ish) in common with these two, but man, was I able to immerse myself in this story. From embarrassing beginning to happy ending, I was hooked.
Courtney's writing made me laugh, cry, blush, and want to curl into myself along with Claire. Definitely dont miss out on this clean, kisses only romance.

I recently discovered Courtney Walsh and have been making my way reading through her novels. This one did not dissapoint. Walsh has a great ability to create fun and relatable characters, weave humor through her stories even when writing about emotionally wrecking life experiences. What an inspiring read this has been for me, I have been dying to read more about women going through and overcoming obstacles in midlife and finding themselves, and this story was captured perfectly.
Shocker I loved this book… I always love a Courtney Walsh book so it’s no surprise.
This is a cozy, heartwarming second chance romance that gave me all the feels.
It was giving me all the feelings of watching a hallmark movie but well reading instead
One of my favorite romances this year!
Claire is recently divorced and making some questionable decisions in her efforts to let go. One humiliating example involved falling into a fountain while ‘stalking’ her ex. Not only did he see it, but everyone else she knew at this high-end function did too. Oh…let’s not even mention when the video went viral🫣
So, it’s clearly time to reinvent herself. Claire moves to Chicago and is befriended by a neighbor in her apartment complex, Miles. He’s determined to help Claire conquer her fears and get back out there!
LOVED this book! It had everything I look for in a rom-com. Witty banter, chemistry that felt real, and a main character in her 40’s that displayed maturity along with silliness. (Perfect combo in my opinion.) It delivered moments that had me grinning, laughing out loud and rooting for Claire. (Her online dating was absolutely hilarious).
I was lucky enough to have received both the digital and audio versions. Reading the first 50% on my kindle then switching to the audio for the final half. Flawless. You simply can’t go wrong with whatever mode you chose. I enjoyed each equally. (A rare treat!)
🎧Patti Murin brought Claire to life. She presented her exactly how I thought Claire would be.

I love being pleasantly surprised. I loved every single person in this book. Each character was distinct and realistic. The relationship dynamics, both romantic and platonic were amazing. So many swoon-worthy moments and great lines. I couldn't put it down.
100 stars. Loved this. Admittedly I love and have read all of Courtney's books but I was so happy to see such a wonderful story about a middle aged woman getting a second chance. Not cringey, not cheesy, just lovely.
hank you to Net Galley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC of this title. Somehow I have never read a book by Courtney Walsh and this definitely won’t be my last.
I absolutely adored Claire and Miles. I loved that they were older (40’s) with grown children. I related so much to Claire and her story of starting over in a new place after a long marriage that ended in divorce.
We all need friends like the ones she met in her new life. Every character in this book was so lovable. I also enjoyed that this was a closed door romance. Sometimes it’s nice to have a feel good story.
Love, love, love this book so much!
I loved this story! It was just the fluffy slice of happiness that I needed to read this spring. It was delightfully funny, followed divorcee Claire as she navigates uprooting her life, leaving her cheating ex-husband and his new wife-to-be behind. Claire was equal parts hot mess and heart of gold—whenever she got herself into a pickle, it was clear that her heart was in the right place. It was very relatable! Claire’s new adventure in her new town includes hilarious attempts at online dating, a hunky neighbour, and another neighbour with a surprising following!
I was rooting for Claire and all her adventures right from the start. It was so refreshing to read about a woman later in life than your regular twenty- or thirty-something. I felt like we would be friends! The author did a great job including text messages and journal entries to liven up the prose—I loved them! Overall, Brighter than Before was a fun, romancey-read that I would recommend.
A big thank you to NetGalley for the advanced copy. All opinions expressed here are my own.
First off, I love that this was about a mid-40s relationship, you don’t see as many romance novels like this. Second, I don’t know how she does it, but Courtney Walsh writes in a way that has you rooting for EVERY character, not just the main ones. Well...maybe except the antagnoist. Didn’t want to root for them. Ugh!
I felt poor Clair’s (MFC) embarrasement throughout the story and my heart ached for her. And the friends she met along the way - Lennon...that story hit the heartstrings, as did Duffy’s. And Miles (MMC)...he is a standup guy and such a champion encourager...to everyone but himself.
Seriously, this story may take place in Chicago, but it has all the elements of a small town romance with that close-knit, found-family feel. I loved this one so much, and the message behind it was powerful!
This comes out on June 9th and you should add it to your TBR. It will have you in all the feels!
I flew through this one in record time. It's such a charming warm hug of a book.
The story follows Claire, a woman reinventing herself after a difficult divorce. She decides to move to a new city and conquer a list of things to rediscover herself beyond the lens of wife and mother.
I loved getting older and relatable characters with easy natural chemistry. Miles was a standout as a MMC.
The short chapters kept the pace moving and I never felt bored. It's a comforting and uplifting story about starting over and finding your joy again.
I'll be on the lookout for new books from this author.
I absolutely adore Courtney Walsh books. They are fun and refreshing and as someone who doesn't read smut, they are the perfect books. This book was no different. I absolutely LOVED that the main character was an older character. I feel like so many romance books revolve around people in their early 20s so it was refreshing to read a book where she is in her 40s, like so many of us. I loved the story of starting over and starting fresh. Courtney Walsh is an automatic read for me. Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book.
I received an ARVC of Brighter than Before thanks to the publisher through NetGalley and leave this review voluntarily.
Forty-something-year-old female main character finds out her husband of 23 years is having an affair. Cue life overhaul. Watch her flounder and flourish. I loved the characters and their stories. The growth within the characters and how the relationships develop was paced perfectly. It hooked me so much that I read it in a day and couldn't put it down. I strongly recommend this rediscovering self romance!

Courtney Walsh is a rockstar! This will be another huge hit for her! If she writes it, I will read it.
Claire finds herself at a point in life she never thought she would be. Mid-40s and divorced with no friends and no direction in life. After finding out, very publicly, that her husband wasn't faithful, she hit rock bottom. A year later with the help of her daughter and therapist, Claire moves to Chicago to finally fulfill her dream of living there. There she finds herself and finds out what she is made of. This book will take you on the journey of that discovery and all the people she meets along the way.
I'm in my late 40s and married with one kiddo in college and one at home. Even though, I've never been divorced, I still related to Claire the whole way through the book. As a wife and mom, I think. we all struggle with our identities outside of those two amazing roles. Claire is an example of strength and proof of what happens when you put yourself out there. I just loved this book so much.
I can't say enough good things about this book. READ IT!

No spice.
This was so good. I cried, I laughed. Just everything I know I’ll get from a Courtney Walsh book and I am not mad at it at all! It really hit when Claire was craving “real” friends. I deal with that in the community I’m in, bodybuilding, are they real or just looking for clout?

Claire is a forty-something woman coming out of a terrible divorce with her cheating husband. Her beloved daughter Minnie is currently abroad and cheering her mom on from a distance, but Claire knows she needs to figure her life out. She spent her entire adult life putting her husband's needs above hers...who is she now? On a whim, Claire decides to head for Chicago, a city she has always loved. She rents an apartment and begins her journey to figure out her life. Along the way, she meets new people (including that intriguing neighbor of hers...), tries out the dating pool (thanks to her daughter creating her online dating profile), begins to build her confidence back, and finds her joy again in what she really wants to do with this second chance.
I absolutely LOVED this book. Not only did I enjoy the middle-aged main characters being highlighted and written as real people, but the storyline flowed so well throughout. Great dialogue with humor and heart, Courtney Walsh had me hooked from the beginning. Everything felt so relatable and heartwarming - I knew it would end well, but the journey to get there had me right there with Claire, cheering her on. This was absolutely a low spice and high character development easy read, which is exactly what I look for when recommending books to my library patrons who ask for less risque material.

Courtney Walsh’s books are pure magic, and this one completely swept me away.
Claire’s life takes a sharp turn when she discovers her husband is exactly that cliché—middle-aged with a younger mistress. Instead of letting it break her, she finally chooses herself and follows a long-held dream of moving to Chicago. Armed with a “What I Want” list, she begins building a new life, one step (and one brave choice) at a time.
I loved how this journey pushed Claire out of her comfort zone in such a real and relatable way. With a little nudge from her daughter Millie, she dips her toes back into the dating world. Enter Miles—her charming, slightly mysterious neighbor, who Millie is convinced is a total womanizer. He ends up helping guide Claire through the chaos of modern dating, and their dynamic quickly becomes one of my favorite parts of the story.
As Claire and Miles spend more time together, their chemistry just flows—it felt natural, warm, and completely engaging. Watching Claire realize what (and who) she truly wants, while navigating Miles’s anti-relationship stance, made the story all the more compelling.
This was such a heartfelt, uplifting read that I genuinely didn’t want it to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advanced copy. I’m leaving this review voluntarily.
This book was wonderful! Even though "divorced mom finding love again" is typically one of my least favorite tropes, Courtney Walsh did such a great job making me fall in love with the characters. Definitely one I would recommend.
Two things are true for me when I read a Courtney Walsh novel: I’m going to stay up too late for just one more chapter + I get to read a wholesome book without explicit words + scenes!
This book was a sweet story of falling apart and then forging a new path, in the midst of pain + uncertainty. I loved all the characters + found myself needing a sweet treat after reading it!
Thank you Thomas Nelson for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
"Maybe this is how you fall in love. Maybe it's not a big, grand gesture that sweeps you off your feet... maybe it's the little things that are going to be hanging around long after the zips and zaps are gone."
"When I look at you, I imagine the rest of my life. It's not big or flashy. It's easygoing and peaceful. It's long walks around our neighborhood on Saturday morning. It's slow cups of coffee in our bathrobes. Trying new restaurants, hanging out with our girls, maybe a dog? It's all of that and everything else."
4.5 Stars!
I absolutely loved this book!
Claire was incredibly brave starting her life over in a new city, with no friends and no job, after a less than pleasant divorce and hitting rock bottom in Colorado. The way she threw herself into her list trying to find herself again made for such a great story.
And her community was my favorite. Lorraine with her YouTube channel, Lennon with her pickle ball events, and of course Miles! He was the best friend to Claire helping her with online dating, while of course pining for her in the background. He had to figure out how to let someone in again after his own tumultuous divorce. But it was so perfect once they let themselves feel their feelings and act on them! Yay for love!
I was smiling the whole time reading this book. It was so cute, wonderful, and fantastic and I insist your read it!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for this eARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness, I loved this book.
Not long ago, I picked up my first Courtney Walsh book. I wasn’t sure why, I wasn’t particularly interested and didn’t need to add another book to my TBR, but I enjoyed the last one enough to request this one. And OH BOY am I glad that I did.
Side note here, this story has a lot of similarities with my life. A cheating husband, a divorce, a sudden moment where you look around and realize you built your whole identity around being a mom and a wife. I’m on my own journey to find what sparks my interest, what lights up my life.
This book explored and addressed and handled everything beautifully. The characters are so easily lovable (after the first little stalker-ish mishap that happens). You’re rooting for everyone involved in the story. One of the things I loved the most was getting to see the main character go on a bunch of different dates - giving a real example of what dating in the real world really looks like.
I don’t know that I’ve ever really truly wanted to thank an author for writing a book, but thank you, Courtney Walsh, for reminding me what is possible in my post-divorce life. Reminding me of how much life I still have to live. Of just how great I can make it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the early copy. These are my honest thoughts.
A 43-year-old FMC? Yes, please!
I absolutely loved this book. It’s funny, sweet, and so full of hope. As a 43-year-old myself, I found it incredibly refreshing to see a mature couple as the main characters. This story shows that there’s no “right” age to start over.
The side characters were so lovable and really added depth to the story. I also enjoyed all the tropes—especially the found family element!
Claire’s journey was beautiful. Her determination to go after her dreams and her courage to open her heart to love again were truly the highlights of the story.
Such a comforting read! I couldn’t put it down.
A breath of fresh air and full of heartwarming, feel good, inspirational moments.
I can't tell you how much I absolutely LOVED this book!!!!!!!!!!
Not only is this an adorable romcom but, it's such a beautiful story of self discovery, found family, new adventures, doing what scares you and reconnecting with yourself after your life gets turned upside down.
Claire is such a beautiful character! I appreciated that this character was in her 40's and not 20 something like most romcom characters. Claire didn't have to reinvent herself because she was already pretty awesome, she just had to reconnect with who she was. The friendships and relationships in this book are extraordinary and incredible. And then there's Miles....I can't say enough about Miles! His character was amazing and he was perfect for Claire. They not only had physical chemistry but the conversational chemistry was brilliant! The easy banter and teasing was effortless and it was like they've know each other their whole lives. Such a beautiful story!!!
I can't recommend this book enough!!!!!
Thank you to NetGalley who provided this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

A big, MEGA thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for letting me read this book pre- release. I adore this book so very, very much. This is a beautiful healing and redemption story for single Mom, Claire, who is in her 40’s.
Claire’s life is shaken up in the worst way and her world is turned upside down and in her grief and actions she finds herself at the center of some pretty embarrassing viral situations. Thankfully her adult daughter Amelia (Minnie) is her best friend and her greatest cheerleader who is rooting for her from afar, while studying at Oxford. Claire is encouraged to move somewhere new and start taking the “bull” that is her life by the horns.
After raising her daughter and putting the rest of her life on hold to support her self- serving ex-husband she decides to make a list and finally start pursuing things that bring her joy and that serve her.
Through her journey of healing, joy, and self- discovery in her new home in Chicago we get to meet so many sweet, fun, endearing characters that help brighten up Claire’s world. The fact that her daughter and handsome, unavailable, neighbor- friend sign her up for some crazy blind dates is just the icing on the cake and the romance and conflict that follows is just swoony/ achy enough to be good for the heart but not over the top.
Possible triggers:
Cheating (in the past, but explained through memories on page)
Drug use (past, secondary character, off page and slightly referenced)
Loss of parental grandparents
This is a clean romance book that just references some sweet and swoony kisses on page.
I was completely swept up in this story and couldn't put it down. Claire is a fantastic protagonist—it was so rewarding to watch her find her footing, embrace her bravery, and build genuine connections. Her resilience through awkward first dates and difficult hurdles felt both relatable and inspiring (and made me laugh quite a bit). Plus, the slow-burn chemistry between Claire and Miles was a total highlight.
The book is packed with beautiful themes: navigating change, the courage to heal, and the power of starting over. It’s heartwarming, hopeful, and exceptionally well-written.
My only tiny quibble? Claire’s hobby-turned-business is baking. While it’s handled well, it feels like a very crowded trope in contemporary fiction—I’d love to see more heroines with different vocations!
Overall, I absolutely loved it. Easily a 5-star read and one of my top picks for 2026

Another home run for Courtney Walsh!! I read the last 80 percent in one night.
Our main character Claire lives through some really cringy moments, but they all lead to real growth. You cheer for Claire as she moves through her growth and it’s great to see how she works through her new life list and begins again. I loved Miles from the beginning and I really enjoyed his place in her life .
Overall, I’m going to be recommending this to my all my reading friends and looking forward to more Courtney Walsh in the future !
Oh Courtney Walsh how you break my heart and patch it all together again with every book! Dare I say this is Courtney's best one yet?!
The way Claire was betrayed, broken, then just decided one day to pick her life up and move forward was truly inspirational Her journal felt like something I could totally relate to and DO NOT GET ME STARTED on Miles and his utter perfection! Where do I find one like him?!

This was a hopeful, feel-good story about starting over, rebuilding confidence, and figuring out what you actually want out of life—with just the right mix of heart and light romance 😊
I really liked Claire as a main character—she’s coming off a painful, very public breakup, and I liked how the story doesn’t rush her healing but instead lets her rebuild piece by piece. The “blank page” idea feels very real, especially when she creates that list of goals to guide her forward.
What I enjoyed most: the checklist/self-reinvention journey ✍️ I really liked how each item—new city, new job, new friendships—becomes a tangible step toward rediscovering herself, rather than just a vague “fresh start.” It makes her growth feel intentional and satisfying.
I also loved the smaller touches—her rediscovered love of baking, the influence of her daughter Minnie, and the slightly chaotic dating setup 😄 Those moments add warmth and humor while still supporting her bigger emotional arc.
And of course, Miles 👀 I liked how their connection builds naturally, especially with that “off-limits” tension adding a little extra spark without overpowering the story’s focus on Claire’s personal growth.
If you love fresh-start stories, post-divorce healing, light romance, found friendships, self-discovery journeys, and uplifting, cozy reads, this is encouraging, relatable, and leaves you with that “things can get better” feeling 📖✨💞
I really enjoyed this book. I loved watching the characters grow into who they wanted to be. I like that it was an older couple finding their way. It was clean with no language and all closed door scenes. Overall a great book.
I was pleased to read an ARC from NetGalley.

Just like all of Courtney’s books, this one will have you smiling until your cheeks hurt, laughing out loud, and maybe even wiping away a few happy tears.
After a devastating divorce, Claire finally asks herself the big question: What do I really want? She is starting to realize that nothing in her life will change unless she does. So she takes a leap with a new state, a new city, and a fresh start. She creates a list and a plan to take control of her life, rediscover her happiness, and maybe even find love along the way.
The dating disasters made me giggle, and I was fully cheering Claire on as she began to see just how amazing she truly is.
Thank you @thomasnelsonfiction and @NetGalley for my ARC!
If you haven’t read a Courtney Walsh book, you are missing out! Walsh does it again with another heartwarming, adorable, and feel-good romance that will put a smile on your face. The story gripped me from the start, and I did not want to put this book down. I loved getting to see a story with characters that are a little bit older (in their forties), who are both divorced. The characters were both likable and relatable. Claire is resilient and brave. I love how she is trying new things, even if it scares her. This is such an important lesson in life. It’s easy to get swept up in the mundanity of everyday life, but I am always working towards saying yes more often, and being open to new experiences. I loved Claire’s journey to finding herself again after divorce. I love the message that it’s never too late to make a change in life — move to a new city, change career paths, and make new friends. Miles is such a good guy. He’s a great listener and genuinely cares what people have to say. I loved the dynamic between Claire and Miles. The friends to more felt authentic, and timed perfectly. Highly recommended this story, especially if you enjoyed The Summer of Yes and prefer no spice romances.

✔️No spice
✔️Self discovery
✔️Found family
✔️Big city and fresh start
Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh is a warm, funny, and refreshing clean romance book. I loved that Claire, the main character, was in her 40’s. Walsh created a character that was so relatable and the growth and change that she had throughout this book was incredible. I loved the relationships that Claire built with her new neighbors.
A story about starting over, growth, and facing your fears is what you’ll get from this book! Overall it was a great heartfelt read! Definitely recommend!

I had to change of my psychological thriller addiction and received this as an ARC. Thanks NetGalley.
I can tell you that I was laughing out loud reading this story. The way the characters are written and speak felt like I was standing right there watching it.
All of the characters were so well described, they could be anyone you know.
I killedcthis book in 4 hours, it was that fun to read.
Miles' and Claire's dialogue were so funny. "Umm, do you need to put this back somewhere, or..." freaking gold!
If you need a change up from your usually genre, I highly recommend you give this a shot.
"Every storm has an ending."
I have never been disappointed by a Courtney Walsh book. They always feel like a breath of fresh air. This character really resonated with me because she is older and finding herself. Yes, there's romance, but for me the part of the story where she really found herself again and dealt with what she had gone through meant so much to me.
Claire is a character that so many women, and men, can relate to. She thought her life was done, and the romance was finished and she had it all. Then it all crumpled around her. She lost her husband, her friends and it was all publicly viral all over the internet at no fault of her own. She moved to somewhere knew and had to completely start over. She felt like she didn't even know what she wanted for herself. We've all been there - new job, new home, new city, etc. etc. etc. Claire's character is for the millenials, and as a millenial - I loved her and was so proud of her journey by the end.
Courtney's writing is some of my favorite. Her writing mixed with Patti Murin's narration, is some of my favorite works. Her writing is bingable, relatable, lots of details and the tension and yearning between the MCs really bled off the page. I felt everything that they were feeling and felt the true essence of the feelings they were developing throughout the story.
Def recommend this one! The Vibes:
-Found Family
-Slow Burn
-Self Discovery after Divorce
-Friends to Lovers
-Big City, Fresh Start
-REALLY funny meet cute
-Dating in Your 40s

Okay, I went in completely blind. I love doing this with all the ARCs I have the privilege to receive. I absolutely loved this one.
I love that the MMC & FMC are in their 40s and how they have to start over in life. This book had everything. I was laughing out loud in several part specially while Claire is trying her luck at dating. Miles is the best MMC. The entire time he was always just looking out for Claire even when he wouldn't recognize it himself.

This book was so warm, inviting and fun with a storyline that pulls you in so you can't stop reading. I read this in two sittings though it probably would have been one if the need for sleep and work didn't get in the way. It had some great laugh-out-loud moments along with parts that made me cringe or want to get up and dance.
Claire has hit rock bottom - her marriage ended when her husband finds a much younger woman and everyone knows about it. She's hibernated for a while and is now at a point of deciding what to do next. Her therapist asks 'What do you really want?' which starts her journaling and making life changing decisions that sees her moving to a new town and discovering herself again. I loved the community 'her people' that surrounds her and accepting her, builds up her self confidence and she begins to believe that she is special. Miles is a friendly neighbour, only too willing to chat and be friends but he is recovering from his own hurt. Can they both put their fear and doubt aside to see what the future holds?
Courtney Walsh is a new to me author but one I will definitely be looking out for in the future. She had me invested in the storyline and believing not just for Claire but for me that if we only step out in faith that there will be something brighter on the other side.
⭐ Stand alone
⭐ slow burn
⭐ sweet and clean

This was one of my very first NetGalley requests, and while it sat on my shelf for a little while, I was completely hooked the moment I finally picked it up! I was lucky enough to receive both an ARC and an ALC for this title, and the fantastic audiobook narrator really helped bring this beautifully grounded story to life.
The story follows Claire as she rebuilds her world in her forties after a painfully public end to her picture-perfect marriage. I absolutely loved how empowering her journey was. The realistic pacing, her post-divorce bucket list, and the incredibly authentic, slow-burn romance with her neighbor, Miles, were definite highlights for me. He is wonderfully supportive of her new dreams, and their dynamic was such a breath of fresh air. As for what I disliked? Honestly, absolutely nothing. The narrative never felt forced or overly dramatic, making it a perfectly effortless and heartwarming second-chance-at-love story.
If you're looking for an uplifting read about finding your footing and falling in love at your own pace, I highly recommend giving this one a try! Another wonderful Courtney Walsh book. It’s a warm hug in book form. I loved the characters and the story. It’s a book with the focus on finding yourself with a sweet romance subplot. It was perfect. It’s a bit cheesy at times but in the best way. I received an arc from netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
After a messy divorce and a public rock bottom, mid-forties Claire Karadec leaves her life in Denver behind for a fresh start in Chicago. Determined to finally figure out what she wants, she navigates her new life with the help of neighbors and a dating profile created by her daughter. Courtney Walsh’s novel is a sweet, lighthearted journey of self-discovery and learning to live on one's own terms.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It especially resonated with me, being in the same demographic as the FMC. It was motivating to see her have success in starting over again at a time in life when others might consider it too risky.
Although I don't mind some spice in books, I appreciated that it really was not necessary in this book to enhance the plot in any way. It was truly a sweet, wholesome story about friendship ultimately becoming something more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. (I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)
Another perfect romcom from Courtney Walsh. I binged this book within 24 hours which honestly says everything. This story was full of heart, healing, deep friendships, love, and grieving the life you thought you were going to have. I loved how Courtney has a way of keeping her romance novels "clean" without losing swoony-ness. She also is the best as writing characters you immediately love, root for, and remember.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction | Thomas Nelson for the ARC through NetGalley. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
First off: Midwestern representation!!!!! Our main character, Claire, moves to Chicago with her daughter Amelia (Minnie) and a dream of starting over in a new life (without her ex-husband).
She’s making a list of goals and dreams and checking it twice, trying to decipher what’s realistic for her in life and love.
Then there’s Miles, one of her many nosy but overtly helpful neighbors, who takes it upon himself to help her sort through the many notifications on dating profiles Minnie has set up for her. I think you see where this is going, and it’s an absolute delight.
There’s bakery notions and Scotcharoo mentions and great female friendships and an endearing teenage daughter for comedic relief.
Brighter Than Before is the perfect rom-com and you should read it this summer!!! Fans of Abby Jimenez, (heartwarming love stories, quirky characters, midwest setting) should pick this up when it releases June 9th, 2026!
“But you do what you have to do for the Mac and Cheese”.
Claire Karadec is starting over at 46 after her divorce from her ex husband, John.
Minnie, short for Amelia, sets up a dating profile for her. Amelia is Claire’s daughter. Watching Claire go on the worst first blind date is hilarious. 😂
This story was absolutely beautiful. It follows Claire as she moves to a new city and finds herself after a messy divorce. She meets friends a long the way and builds the confidence to do things on her own and to conquer her dreams. I loved that Miles was so supportive of Claire and a great first new friend for her. Everyone knew Miles and Claire belonged together but I loved how that wasn’t the whole premise of this story. I was rooting for Claire to get her happily ever after and I thought she was a really brave and strong FMC! I loved that so much. ❤️
Thank you so much for a gifted copy in exchange for an honest review
This honestly felt like a warm hug. I absolutely adored this book. Second chances are always so deep and this one was so well done. It made me laugh and cry.
If Courtney Walsh writes it, I'm going to read it. Every single time. And not just read it but love it too... and this one was certainly no exception! In this story, we meet Claire as she is starting life over in a new city after a public betrayal and divorce where she meets Miles, her charming next-door neighbor. Miles and Claire... oh I just love them together right from that first awkward meet cute! They had such a fun dynamic between them... the chemistry was undeniable, but after his own divorce, he is determined never to enter a serious relationship again. As romance readers, we of course knows exactly how that is going to work out for him. While Courtney delivers a swoon worthy romance between these two, just as I've come to love and expect from her, this one also perfectly blends in women's fiction as well. Claire's journey of starting over and finding out who she wanted to be, and the friendships she finds along the way, truly were just an important start of the story of the romance... and I loved it all!
Brighter Than Before is a closed-door romance with kisses only and no language.
**ARC received for consideration. All opinions are my own.

Claire is still reeling from her failed relationship and the feeling that she never fit the mold for her ex and his family. Even a year later, she struggles to adjust to how different her life has become. Taking her therapist’s advice, she revisits an old journal prompt: What do I really want?
Now in her forties and newly single, Claire begins a fresh start in Chicago—a city she’s always dreamed of living in. Her daughter, studying abroad at Oxford, sets up a dating profile for her mom to help her find love again.
She also enlists the help of Claire’s handsome neighbor, Miles, the popular building owner who’s eager to assist her. Claire is hesitant at first, making assumptions about him, but she finds herself drawn to an apparently unavailable man.
As Claire checks items off her list, she discovers comfort and friendship in Chicago. But can she find love again? Will she embrace the changes she set out to make and reclaim her life? And ultimately, will she discover what she truly wants—and a second chance at love?
There’s just something about Courtney Walsh’s writing that’s so captivating—it pulls me right into the story. I couldn’t put this book down, but that’s nothing new when it comes to her novels. She writes some of the best feel-good romance and self-discovery stories, creates incredible FMCs, and I always fall in love with her MMCs. Miles is now at the very top of my list.
I loved the mother-daughter relationship between Minnie and Claire. It reminded me so much of my own relationship with my mom, who has always been one of my best friends. The texting threads between them are especially heartwarming. I talk to my mom daily, and she lives just down the road from me, so I really connected with that dynamic. I also loved how much they support and uplift each other in their journeys—Minnie is her mom’s biggest fan and fully encourages her to start over. Their strong bond post-divorce was beautiful to see.
The relationship between Miles and Claire is radiant. They start out as good friends, and as they get to know each other better, their connection slowly deepens. I absolutely loved their hilarious meet-cute—I was smiling through the entire scene. Both characters have been hurt by past relationships, so watching them open themselves up to new possibilities and rediscover who they are was incredibly rewarding.
This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve ever read about starting over and giving love a second chance. It’s a perfect reminder that it’s never too late to begin again and that we don’t have to stay stuck in the past.
Thank you to NetGalley, Courtney Walsh, and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the ARC of Brighter Than Before. This is such a feel-good story about love, second chances, and rediscovery.
This was beautiful. My parents went through a divorce a few years ago, under different circumstances, but I could see my mom in some of Claire’s feelings. I loved watching her discover herself. Find love again. Find a job that wasn’t just being a wife and a mom. This was such a beautiful journey to go on. I loved all the Chicago references and the fun mentions of Comic-Con and Disney. Also, I really need Claire to bake for me. She made me so hungry. Especially with her trying new foods!
This was such a sweet journey of friendship, love, and learning who you are again.
