Description

Life has a way of changing your path--and Claire Karadec certainly didn't plan on a fork in the road in her forties. From New York Times bestselling author Courtney Walsh comes a witty, warm, and uplifting novel about second chances, found family, and the courage it takes to become yourself--perfect for fans of Annabel Monaghan and Sarah Adams.

After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.

Before she can talk herself out of it, she takes a step of faith, puts her old life in the rearview mirror, and leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart. This one step sends Claire on a journey of self-discovery, giving her the courage to conquer her fears, one checklist item at a time, and showing her that life can be a whole lot brighter than she imagined.

She rediscovers a love for baking, stumbles into new friendships, and even allows her daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is Miles, the charming, off-limits neighbor whose kindness makes it hard to remember why he's off-limits at all.

Between late-night journaling, disastrous first dates, great big lessons and priceless small victories, Claire learns to quiet the voice telling her she wasn't enough and listens to the one that asks the harder question . . .

What do I really want?

As old expectations loosen their grip, Claire discovers that belonging isn't a place you're invited to--it's a life you build one brave choice at a time. And the sweetest things often show up when you finally get out of your own way.

Lose yourself in a story that's equal parts heartwarming, hopeful, and full of joy. Early readers are loving the witty humor, uplifting journey, and sweet, clean romance that makes Brighter than Before such a life-affirming escape. Grab your copy today and discover a second-chance story about courage, connection, and building a life that feels truly your own.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this audio ARC.

Courtney Walsh is an auto buy for me. She writes such beautiful books. This one has become my favorite of her books I have read. This story was told so beautifully. Chicago is the backdrop for this story and her writing made me feel like I was right there. The story is about Claire and her moving to Chicago after a divorce and a very embarrassing moment in a fountain. Then there is Miles one of her new neighbors. Their chemistry is amazing and I loved all of the secondary characters as well.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was excited to see another book by the author of "The Summer of Yes." This chick lit story was such a nice, lighthearted story. The character development was outstanding and I found myself rooting for the main characters throughout. Can't wait for Walsh's next book! 5 out of 5 stars!

Can I just say how much I LOOOOVE THIS BOOK? This is my first 10000/10 read of 2026!!!

This is my first Courtney Walsh book, and she absolutely knocked it out of the park. What she does so beautifully is bring out the very best in her characters even when they're at their absolute lowest. There's this tenderness to how she writes people rebuilding themselves.

But real talk? The setting is in Chicago, my first love when I migrated to the US years ago. She makes me miss living there so badly. And then she mentions Minghin?? EXCUSE ME. Please don't give out the best kept secrets! LOL. I was geeking out the entire time.

The story follows Claire, a divorcee who moved from Colorado to Chicago hoping to find herself again. Her daughter Minnie tries setting her up on dating apps, and then there's Miles, the next door neighbor she can't seem to shake. And BOY, OMG. The progression of Claire and Miles' story had me LIVING. No spice, no problem. I loved watching Claire's development after divorce just as much as I loved watching her fall for Miles. There's something so satisfying about watching a woman rediscover who she is on her own terms first.

"I want to figure who I am apart from a wife and a mom." YES QUEEN!!!!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the ALC!

I loved this. It was so refreshing to read about older characters navigating big life changes and getting back into the dating world. The message that you’re never too old to start over or discover yourself really stood out. Claire was easy to relate to with her quirks, dreams, and awkward moments. This was sweet, uplifting, and just a genuinely enjoyable read.

Summary:
After a divorce in her forties, Claire moves to Chicago to start over. With help from new friends and a dating profile set up by her daughter, she begins to rediscover herself and figure out what she truly wants out of life.

I received an ALC of Brighter Than Before🎧

Claire is determined to start again after a messy divorce and an embarrassing moment being caught in a fountain at the charity event her cheating ex-husband was at. She sells her house and moves to Chicago, where she ends up in a building with some sweet but also nosy neighbours like Lorraine. She enters the dating scene again with the help of her daughter and her neighbour Miles, who happens to have a decent amount of relationship baggage himself. The road to dating again after divorce proves to be bumpy for Claire, and she continues to grow closer to Miles despite her head telling her he’s too close to the men she isn’t looking for.

I really enjoyed listening to this story. I thought having more mature main characters was a bonus to this wonderful story about starting again, making friends when you are an adult, and taking chances after heartbreak. This is definitely a good motivational story, not just a romance.

Audiobook review: Loved it! The narrator’s voice kept me engaged the whole time, and I thought her voice also suited the character very well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A must-read! Out June 9th!

5 big beautiful stars for this joy of a book that I listened to the audio version. This book features Claire who is moving on with her life after it was turned upside down and how it is never too late to start over, love and learn again and do the things that scare you. The relationships including that with her daughter are oh so sweet and this book features a huge self discovery plot, found family and the cutest slow burn neighbour romance. Highly recommend!

I had the chance to listen to an ARC of *Brighter Than Before* by Courtney Walsh, and it was such a sweet, uplifting story.

One of my favorite parts was that Claire an older leading lady in her 40s navigating a second chance at life. I love an older main character! She moves to Chicago for a fresh start after a very public end to her marriage. Watching her slowly rebuild, find her footing, and open herself up to dating apps was fun to listen to. The cute next door neighbor definitely helps!

Her journey isn’t just about romance either; it’s about rediscovering herself, especially as she reconnects with her love of baking and begins to dream about a new path forward. She also works to build friendships and conquer her list.

If you enjoy closed-door romances, this one is especially charming. It’s light, funny, and full of warmth without losing emotional depth. Between the second chance romance, the building of new friendships, and the find oneself, this book felt like a hug in story form.

Definitely recommend if you’re looking for something cute, wholesome, and genuinely feel-good.

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh felt like such a breath of fresh air. This story follows Claire, a woman in her 40s starting over after a difficult divorce, who makes the bold decision to move to a new city and rebuild her life from scratch. She creates a list of new things to try and new goals to achieve.
What really stood out to me was how real Claire was. Her voice is honest, a little messy at times, but deeply relatable. The author does a beautiful job capturing what it’s like to start over when life doesn’t go the way you planned, and I found myself genuinely rooting for her every step of the way. It even made me want to create my own “try something new” list.
The romance was perfectly done. It’s a clean, closed-door story (just kisses, no spice). The tension, pacing, and development of the relationship felt natural without feeling being rushed, but also not too much of a slow burn that it got frustrating.
Overall, this book was sweet, insightful, and empowering. If you love stories about second chances, personal growth, and a well-developed, low-spice romance, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

One of my favorite romances this year!
Claire is recently divorced and making some questionable decisions in her efforts to let go. One humiliating example involved falling into a fountain while ‘stalking’ her ex. Not only did he see it, but everyone else she knew at this high-end function did too. Oh…let’s not even mention when the video went viral🫣

So, it’s clearly time to reinvent herself. Claire moves to Chicago and is befriended by a neighbor in her apartment complex, Miles. He’s determined to help Claire conquer her fears and get back out there!

LOVED this book! It had everything I look for in a rom-com. Witty banter, chemistry that felt real, and a main character in her 40’s that displayed maturity along with silliness. (Perfect combo in my opinion.) It delivered moments that had me grinning, laughing out loud and rooting for Claire. (Her online dating was absolutely hilarious).

I was lucky enough to have received both the digital and audio versions. Reading the first 50% on my kindle then switching to the audio for the final half. Flawless. You simply can’t go wrong with whatever mode you chose. I enjoyed each equally. (A rare treat!)

🎧Patti Murin brought Claire to life. She presented her exactly how I thought Claire would be.

If you’re searching for a delightfully fun and well written (non-spicy) romance, look no further!
Do I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY!

I’m actually a bit sad that I have to say goodbye to these characters.😢

I absolutely adored my second read from this author, if at all possible, more than my first one My summer of Yes.

If you've been longing for an older protagonist in your romances, this will hit the spot. I loved the meet cute, the misunderstandings, the growing chemistry between the two, the new lease on life, uplifting outlook on daring to live according to your own standards, no-one else's. This was pure bliss.

I absolutely loved Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh. Honestly, I’d give it more than five stars if I could. I’ve loved every book written by Courtney Walsh! She never disappoints.
There’s so much to love: the meaningful friendships Claire builds along the way, her maturity as a main character, and the genuinely heartwarming feel of the story. I especially appreciated that it’s a clean romance. It made the book even more enjoyable.
I truly can’t say enough about how much I loved this one.

Contains an audiobook review.

This is a kisses only contemporary romance with a touch of women's fiction and a touch of romcom and a lot of heart.

I loved that Claire was a mature adult. Personally I needed a book with somewhat older main characters still trying to find a way to navigate life in a way that makes them happy.

I also appreciated that this story felt like something that could happen in real life. We saw a complete progression of a relationship. I didn't feel like I was reading a book with tropes.

It had lots of humor and also made you think. There are some life lessons in this story that I can apply, if I remember them.

I thought that the narrator for the audio was fabulous! She brought Claire to life and had great voices for the other characters as well. Highly recommend listening!

We can do hard things!

I am very thankful to Thomas Nelson, Zondervan Fiction Audio and Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to an advanced audio copy of this book. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh was exactly the kind of uplifting, feel-good story I needed.

Claire’s life completely falling apart in her forties could have felt heavy, but instead this story is full of hope, humor, and second chances. I loved the “starting over” theme and her list of goals—it made her journey feel both intentional and relatable. There’s something so satisfying about watching a character slowly rebuild a life that actually feels like hers.

The move to Chicago, the baking, the friendships… all of it had that cozy, comforting vibe I love. And the dating setup with her daughter? So fun and added just the right amount of chaos and charm.

Miles was such a sweet addition too—definitely gave that soft, off-limits tension without taking over the story. This really felt more like Claire’s personal growth journey than just a romance, which I appreciated.

If I had one small critique, it’s that parts of the story felt a little predictable—but honestly, that didn’t take away from how enjoyable it was. Sometimes you just want a story that feels warm, hopeful, and leaves you smiling.

Overall, this is a heartwarming, clean, second-chance story about finding yourself again—and realizing it’s never too late to start over. Perfect for fans of authors like Annabel Monaghan and Sarah Adams.

Can you fall inlove with a book a second time? Well that's just what I did. I read the ebook and now I've listened to the audiobook and I didn't think it could get better but guess what... it did!!! Claire has you hooked from the very 1st page with all that she is going through. Divorce is not something easily dealt with on your mental, emotional or physical self and sadly both characters in this book had heartbreaking experiences. Starting fresh and doing the soul searching was much needed. Being able to follow Claire's growth and amazing journey while making the best friends was beautiful. Throw in Miles and his perfect personality and this book was everything I never knew I needed. Perfect friends in Lennon and Larraine. Perfect book boyfriend in miles. Perfect mother/daughter relationship and support with Minnie. I need the book trophy to hurry and come out for my shelf!!!

Brighter Than Before by Chloe Walsh is an easy 5-star read for me. I originally read this story and completely fell in love with it, so getting the chance to experience it again through audio—thanks to NetGalley—was such a treat.

The narrator absolutely brought this story to life in the best way. Their performance added so much depth and emotion, making an already powerful story feel even more immersive. It felt like I was experiencing everything alongside the characters all over again.

This is one of those stories that just sticks with you. The emotions, the characters, the journey—it all hit just as hard the second time around. Falling in love with it twice is probably the best compliment I can give.

If you’re a fan of emotional, beautifully told stories, I highly recommend both reading and listening to this one. It’s truly something special.

✨ Starting over in your 40s, post-divorce, and dating again? This book makes it feel possible—and hilarious.
🎧 ALC Review 🎧
I loved this book so much—I may or may not have listened to it in one sitting!

Claire is forced to start over after a divorce in her 40s, but instead of letting it defeat her, she takes charge. She creates a list of things to try—new adventures, fresh starts, and stepping outside her comfort zone—and sets out to check them off one by one.
After moving to a new city, she dives back into the dating world… which proves to be quite the struggle—until she meets her neighbor, Miles

This book was funny, lighthearted, and full of laugh-out-loud moments, while also being incredibly relatable—especially for anyone navigating life changes and rediscovering themselves.

I really connected with Claire and her journey, and I loved how the story balanced humor with heart.
This was my first book by this author, and I’m already excited to read more!

I absolutely adored Claire and Miles. I loved that they were older (40’s) with grown children. I related so much to Claire and her story of starting over in a new place after a long marriage that ended in divorce.
We all need friends like the ones she met in her new life. Every character in this book was so lovable. I also enjoyed that this was a closed door romance. Sometimes it’s nice to have a feel good story.

This is one of those books that makes you crave for it to continue and has your cup overflowing! I already know this is a book I will need to re-read and want to tab so many passages!

Claire has had some of the most public and embarrassing moments! She had her feelings, she made her lists, and then she picked herself up and moved on in the most epic of ways! Reeling from her divorce, she makes the move to Chicago to finally put herself first. She has a list of items she is scared to do but that will help her regain her life. Her daughter Mimi is a constant support while away at school and set her up on a dating app to help push her back out into the world. She meets some amazing people on her journey to re-discover herself, but the most influential and one who becomes her biggest supporter is Miles. There are so many laugh out loud moments, witty banter, and beautiful and uplifting messages throughout this story. The growth of both Miles and Claire is exciting to witness, but really the found family, acceptance, and belief of these characters self-worth was heartwarming.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for this e-ARC of Brighter than Before. Courtney Walsh hit it out of the park with this story and reading her author's note added even more emotion to this journey! Highly recommend this read!

This book was absolutely a warm hug. I think what I enjoy so much about Courtney Walsh’s books is how uplifting they are. They give some gritty reality but then wrap you up in love and opportunity and community. It’s a sort of uncomplicated joy. I was really taken with Claire’s journey and how she healed from her ex-husband’s betrayal. Miles was the perfect romantic lead — such a kind and supportive partner — and I really believe these two would make it. An absolutely gorgeous book.

Courtney Walsh is a rockstar! This will be another huge hit for her! If she writes it, I will read it.

Claire finds herself at a point in life she never thought she would be. Mid-40s and divorced with no friends and no direction in life. After finding out, very publicly, that her husband wasn't faithful, she hit rock bottom. A year later with the help of her daughter and therapist, Claire moves to Chicago to finally fulfill her dream of living there. There she finds herself and finds out what she is made of. This book will take you on the journey of that discovery and all the people she meets along the way.

I'm in my late 40s and married with one kiddo in college and one at home. Even though, I've never been divorced, I still related to Claire the whole way through the book. As a wife and mom, I think. we all struggle with our identities outside of those two amazing roles. Claire is an example of strength and proof of what happens when you put yourself out there. I just loved this book so much.

I can't say enough good things about this book. READ IT! Patti Murin is the narrator and did a fabulous job. I've listened to a few of her books. Zero complaints.

Claire is a forty-something woman coming out of a terrible divorce with her cheating husband. Her beloved daughter Minnie is currently abroad and cheering her mom on from a distance, but Claire knows she needs to figure her life out. She spent her entire adult life putting her husband's needs above hers...who is she now? On a whim, Claire decides to head for Chicago, a city she has always loved. She rents an apartment and begins her journey to figure out her life. Along the way, she meets new people (including that intriguing neighbor of hers...), tries out the dating pool (thanks to her daughter creating her online dating profile), begins to build her confidence back, and finds her joy again in what she really wants to do with this second chance.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Not only did I enjoy the middle-aged main characters being highlighted and written as real people, but the storyline flowed so well throughout. Great dialogue with humor and heart, Courtney Walsh had me hooked from the beginning. Everything felt so relatable and heartwarming - I knew it would end well, but the journey to get there had me right there with Claire, cheering her on. This was absolutely a low spice and high character development easy read, which is exactly what I look for when recommending books to my library patrons who ask for less risque material.

The audiobook was narrated by the great Patti Murin, who always brings the stories she reads to life with such charm and heart. The audio was well-paced and clear, and Murin's vocals immediately brought you into Claire's world. Halfway through, I realized how much I wanted to be friends with Claire, and it was Murin's voice that really made this character and her story feel so real, like I was listening to a friend tell her me about her life.

Courtney Walsh’s books are pure magic, and this one completely swept me away.

Claire’s life takes a sharp turn when she discovers her husband is exactly that cliché—middle-aged with a younger mistress. Instead of letting it break her, she finally chooses herself and follows a long-held dream of moving to Chicago. Armed with a “What I Want” list, she begins building a new life, one step (and one brave choice) at a time.

I loved how this journey pushed Claire out of her comfort zone in such a real and relatable way. With a little nudge from her daughter Millie, she dips her toes back into the dating world. Enter Miles—her charming, slightly mysterious neighbor, who Millie is convinced is a total womanizer. He ends up helping guide Claire through the chaos of modern dating, and their dynamic quickly becomes one of my favorite parts of the story.

As Claire and Miles spend more time together, their chemistry just flows—it felt natural, warm, and completely engaging. Watching Claire realize what (and who) she truly wants, while navigating Miles’s anti-relationship stance, made the story all the more compelling.

This was such a heartfelt, uplifting read that I genuinely didn’t want it to end.

Thank you to @netgalley and @thomasnelsonfiction for this ALC of Brighter than Before. I absolutely loved this post-divorce romance. As a middle aged woman, I thought it was such a delightful read! I was laughing out loud so many times. This story, to me, was about self discovery. I loved the FMC, Claire, so much and I found myself relating to her in so many ways. This book was a five for me. I think I read it at the right time in my life and it really resonated with me. My favorite @courtneywalsh book yet!

I love Courtney Walsh’s books and this one didn’t disappoint. She writes the most relatable characters and delivers real feelings but in a hopeful way that I always end the book feeling happy. Now let’s pair that with my favorite narrator and it’s a win. This is perfection. Especially as a mom who sometimes wonders what’s next for me.

Claire Karadec didn't plan on reinventing herself in her forties but then again, she didn't plan on her husband blowing up her picture-perfect life either. So here we are.

Brighter than Before is the literary equivalent of a really good latte: warm, a little sweet, and exactly what you needed without knowing you needed it. What sets it apart is how believable the growth feels. Claire earns every breakthrough the messy, journal-it-out, bake-through-the-feelings way.

The Chicago setting is chef's kiss, and the charming off-limits neighbor is, well... dangerously charming.

First Courtney Walsh for me. Definitely not the last.
Fair warning: this book will make you want to write a list, move cities, and befriend your neighbor. Budget accordingly.

My first Catherine Walsh book and for sure not the last one!

I really enjoy the fact thar Claire was an older FMC! In a later stage of life! It was an amazing experience to see her expanding and developing in a personal aspect after a divorce!

She decides that after years living thought her ex-husband, it was time to live on her own terms!

A list, a new adventure and how at a later stage in life this woman finds herself

The narrator was lovely and brought Claire to Life

This was an OUTSTANDING delight. Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for my audio-arc of "Brighter Than Before." All opinions are my own.

I initially requested this audiobook because I adore the narrator (Patti Murin). Her voice blended perfectly with Courtney Walsh's writing voice.

The story follows Claire, a mid-forties divorcee who moved from Colorado to Chicago, hoping to find herself again. With the help of her neighbors and daughter, she tackles her list of being brave. One of those items is to begin dating again, and we are treated to some of the best/worst first dates.
Claire and Miles build from friends to so much more, which is sweet and completely endearing.

Walsh knocked it out of the park on this one. Clean, emotional, funny-what's not to like?

Five enthusiastic stars.
One chili pepper for sweet kisses.

This is a really sweet and uplifting book. The book also has some funny moments and a little bit of romance, which made it fun to read. This was a really cute romance with over 40 protagonists-a unicorn in the genre. Claire has been dumped by her husband in a very public, very humiliating way and her therapist suggests she journal and make a list of what she wants out of life. She decides to move to Chicago to start over and her journey back from heartbreak and humiliation is sweet and inspiring. This book is not deep, but it was a fun read and it made me think a lot about the power of believing in yourself and making the best of bad situations. This book releases on June 8-definitely worth putting in your beach bag! Thank you to NetGalley and to Thomas Nelson for the advanced copy of the audiobook!

**Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson, and Zondervan Fiction Audio for an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.**

5⭐️ for me! This translates to: I’d recommend it AND I’d revisit it. Every time I listened, it felt like I was journeying with an old friend through the ups and downs of rediscovering herself. 🩷 It hit on friendship, being honest, and vulnerable.

The story folllows Claire, a recently divorced empty nester who moves from Colorado to Chicago to start over again. She is the epitome of real, flailing in the beginning when she learns of her husband’s infidelity but then is determined to make beauty from the ashes. I was rooting for her the whole way, smiling often, and crying by the end. I also appreciated that the MFC was in her forties to offer a different perspective than what I am used to in rom-coms.

I am from the Midwest, so my only ick was how the narrator was a little over the top with one of the neighbor’s accents. Thankfully, the author was perfection so it made up for that part!

Best line: “I used to really resent getting pushed off that cliff, and then I realized it’s the only way you can soar.” 🕊️

Now… go read it! You won’t be disappointed . 😃

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh completely stole my heart. This is the kind of book that leaves you feeling hopeful, seen, and genuinely uplifted.

What I loved most is the found family element. It’s not just a side detail. It’s the heart of the story. Watching Claire slowly build a new life in Chicago, piece by piece, and find people who truly see her was so beautiful. These relationships felt real, supportive, and earned. There’s something incredibly special about the way this book shows that family isn’t always the one you start with, but the one you choose and grow into.

Claire’s journey is just as powerful. Seeing her start over in her forties, after everything falls apart, and still choose to chase her dreams was so inspiring. It’s not easy, and the book doesn’t pretend it is. There are setbacks, doubts, and moments where she could have easily gone back to what was safe. But she keeps going. She keeps choosing herself. That kind of quiet bravery made her so easy to root for.

I also have to mention how cute and funny the whole dating app situation was. Minnie and Miles teaming up behind the scenes to message potential dates for Claire had me smiling the entire time. It added such a light, playful layer to the story and made their dynamic even more endearing.

And Claire and Miles… the slow burn was perfection. The pining, the tension, the way Miles slowly softens for her while trying to hold himself back. It was so tender and so well done. Their connection felt genuine and deeply earned, which made every little moment between them hit that much harder.

This book feels like a reminder that it’s never too late to start over, to build something new, and to find your people. It’s hopeful, heartfelt, and honestly just made me really happy to read.

An easy five stars and one I won’t stop recommending.

This was such a refreshing read! I loved following main characters who were not in their early twenties, and Claire’s journey of rediscovering herself felt genuine and relatable. She has her stumbles, but her perseverance makes her story all the more rewarding.

The romance is clean while still feeling mature and realistic, and I really enjoyed the balance of emotional depth with humor and charm. It kept the story light without losing its heart.

This was the perfect palate cleanser after some heavier fantasy reads, which was exactly why I needed. My first Courtney Walsh book, but definitely not my last!

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh follows Claire, a woman in her mid-forties whose seemingly stable life unravels after a painful and very public discovery about her husband’s betrayal. Newly divorced and unsure of who she is outside of marriage and motherhood, Claire hits an emotional low before deciding to finally confront a question she’s long avoided: what does she truly want? Determined to rebuild her life, she makes a bold choice to leave everything familiar behind—selling her home and moving to Chicago to start fresh.

In Chicago, Claire creates a list of goals that push her far beyond her comfort zone, from forming meaningful friendships to pursuing work she loves and even stepping into the world of online dating—with a little help from her daughter. As she navigates awkward first dates, new relationships, and an unexpected connection with her charming but complicated neighbor Miles, Claire slowly rediscovers her confidence and sense of self. Through small victories and heartfelt setbacks, she learns that belonging and happiness aren’t things you wait for—they’re things you actively build, one brave decision at a time.

This is a warm, uplifting read that blends humor, romance, and emotional depth in a way that feels both comforting and inspiring. Courtney Walsh excels at writing relatable characters, and Claire’s journey of starting over later in life feels refreshingly honest and empowering. The story’s themes of second chances, found family, and personal growth make it especially appealing for readers who enjoy character-driven women’s fiction with a clean, heartfelt romance.

If you’re looking for a feel-good novel that still carries meaningful emotional weight—something that will make you smile, reflect, and root deeply for the main character—Brighter Than Before is an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of book that leaves you with a sense of hope and the reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.

This was a hopeful, feel-good story about starting over, rebuilding confidence, and figuring out what you actually want out of life—with just the right mix of heart and light romance 😊

I really liked Claire as a main character—she’s coming off a painful, very public breakup, and I liked how the story doesn’t rush her healing but instead lets her rebuild piece by piece. The “blank page” idea feels very real, especially when she creates that list of goals to guide her forward.

What I enjoyed most: the checklist/self-reinvention journey ✍️ I really liked how each item—new city, new job, new friendships—becomes a tangible step toward rediscovering herself, rather than just a vague “fresh start.” It makes her growth feel intentional and satisfying.

I also loved the smaller touches—her rediscovered love of baking, the influence of her daughter Minnie, and the slightly chaotic dating setup 😄 Those moments add warmth and humor while still supporting her bigger emotional arc.

And of course, Miles 👀 I liked how their connection builds naturally, especially with that “off-limits” tension adding a little extra spark without overpowering the story’s focus on Claire’s personal growth.

If you love fresh-start stories, post-divorce healing, light romance, found friendships, self-discovery journeys, and uplifting, cozy reads, this is encouraging, relatable, and leaves you with that “things can get better” feeling 📖✨💞

Another smash hit by one of my favourite authors! Courtney Walsh never disappoints. Each time I read one of her books I’m convinced it’s my favourite…until the next one, anyway.

I felt for Claire right from that wince-inducing opening scene. I kept shouting, “Nooooo, turn bacccccckkkk!” but, alas, she didn’t listen to me and chaos ensued. The kind of chaos that you can laugh about…ten years down the road but is absolutely mortifying at the time and I was mortified right along with her.

So Claire decides to start fresh with a list of ‘new-to-her’ goals both big and small and, honestly, more chaos ensues but in the best of ways. New city, new friends, new experiences along with a host of hilarious (and sometimes not so hilarious) mix-ups that need sorting. Thankfully she has more triumphs than failures, though once she goes awry it’s always in epic fashion! And in the midst of all things new comes the possibility of romance…something she’s not keen on at all.

Walsh has created the perfect blend of emotion and humour with characters that are as endearing as they are flawed. Claire’s personal growth story is phenomenal and left me teary-eyed more than once. And that reluctant romance takes on a life of it’s own, full of tenderness and yearning and the fragile hope of a very different kind of future than she planned.

I listened to the audio edition of ‘Brighter Than Before’ narrated by Patti Murin who did a fabulous job portraying all these characters and their unique eccentricities and her performance really captured the heart of the story which I appreciate so much.

My thanks to Thomas Nelson, Zondervan Fiction Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

I loved this book.Courtney Walsh has a way of writing life's challenges in a warm and connective way. The tone is always light and mostly even funny.

In this book, Claire is treated really poorly by her ex-husband. After her divorce, she decides to pull herself up by her bootstraps and figure out how to shape her life. I loved all the challenges she faced, very relatable. I loved her relationship with Miles and Minnie. Claire's romance with Mike's was slow, really slow, but built steadily over the book.

Lovely bookand Patti Murrin did it justice with her excellent narration.

This was unexpected! Totally felt like the sweetest Hallmark movie with far more humor. I loved the “list” Claire kept for herself, making it so clear just how much her character was growing and changing throughout the novel. I loved that we knew just how awful the ex was, but the author wasn’t giving our main female constant hatred and anger towards him. The side characters were so loveable and were all a benefit.

The narrator was listed as Patti Murin. I’ve heard her work before and she was the perfect voice for this book.

"Every storm has an ending."

I have never been disappointed by a Courtney Walsh book. They always feel like a breath of fresh air. This character really resonated with me because she is older and finding herself. Yes, there's romance, but for me the part of the story where she really found herself again and dealt with what she had gone through meant so much to me.

Claire is a character that so many women, and men, can relate to. She thought her life was done, and the romance was finished and she had it all. Then it all crumpled around her. She lost her husband, her friends and it was all publicly viral all over the internet at no fault of her own. She moved to somewhere knew and had to completely start over. She felt like she didn't even know what she wanted for herself. We've all been there - new job, new home, new city, etc. etc. etc. Claire's character is for the millenials, and as a millenial - I loved her and was so proud of her journey by the end.

Courtney's writing is some of my favorite. Her writing mixed with Patti Murin's narration, is some of my favorite works. Her writing is bingable, relatable, lots of details and the tension and yearning between the MCs really bled off the page. I felt everything that they were feeling and felt the true essence of the feelings they were developing throughout the story.

Def recommend this one! The Vibes:
-Found Family
-Slow Burn
-Self Discovery after Divorce
-Friends to Lovers
-Big City, Fresh Start
-REALLY funny meet cute
-Dating in Your 40s

I absolutely fell in love with Claire, and her world. Courtney Walsh's characters are always so well developed, they feel like real people going through real life. Claire and Miles and the whole crew are no different. The idea of starting over later in life, the way Claire does, is so incredibly terrifying. Yet somehow, Walsh makes it all feel real and approachable and hopeful, despite the heartbreak. The narrator did a beautiful job and I just simply never wanted this story to end!

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh
Narrated by Patti Murin

Forty something Claire Karadec has been having a bad year when she makes things worse by showing up at a big fund raiser (one she used to run for her husband before he dumped her) stuffed with junk food, wearing her grayest of gray sweats. All she was going to do was get a sneak peak at the event from a dark spot near the fountain but things didn't work out the way Claire hoped, just as her twenty three year marriage didn't work out, either. This latest horrible event finally prompts Claire to act on what her therapist told her she needs to do.

So Claire leaves Colorado behind to move to Chicago, a place she had always wanted to live. Her life had revolved around her domineering husband and wonderful daughter. It's time for Claire to do things for herself, the time is now and the door is open.

This story is so funny and heartwarming. Claire jumps from her "invisible to everyone who used to know her as her husband's wife" life to being all alone in a new city. She makes lists of things she wants to do and they are daunting to her, such as eat out alone, make a friend, get a hobby. And Claire wants real romance in her life, not what she had before, being her husband's unpaid, unacknowledged personal assistant until she was replaced by someone younger.

Right off the bat, Claire meets Miles, her neighbor, and what a hunk of man is Miles. But he's also fun loving, happy all the time, so very calm and lowkey content. But Claire keeps her distance when it comes to the heart because she is sure that Miles, a man who never wants to be tied down again, wants the opposite of the long term, fully committed marriage that Claire longs for in her future.

Miles and Claire's daughter, Minnie, are devoted to getting Claire on a cycle of dating all kinds of men and the dates are both hilarious and embarrassing. Claire knows she does not need men who will tear her down, use her, or waste her time. And, Claire begins to see what she wants for herself as a career, something she loves to do and is very good at doing.

Patti Murin is great with the narration and even when there are texts in the story, they are easy to understand and so very funny. There are some rude and mean folks in this story, that's how Claire got to where she was at the beginning of the book, but there are also so many amazing and caring people, too. Claire even has to learn to not judge people before she really knows them, the one who might be the most lowkey and happy could be the one who is hurting the most. This audiobook is a winner!

I actually already read this book, but I decided to request the audiobook because I wanted to revisit the warmth and sense of community it captures so well. I almost never reread books, but the idea of experiencing one I already loved in a new way—and especially since it’s our official book club pick for June—made me think, why not?

The characters felt very real to me. Claire is relatable and imperfect in a way that makes you root for her, while Miles is supportive, a little persistent, and genuinely kind. I also really appreciated the friendships Claire builds along the way—the community aspect adds a comforting layer without ever feeling forced or overdone.

What stood out most was the character development. Claire’s growth is gradual and believable, which keeps the story grounded and makes her journey feel authentic rather than rushed.

The audiobook adds a new layer of immersion, and for a story that’s already a five-star read, it’s a really rewarding way to experience it again.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advance copy of Brighter Than Before

I absolutely adored this one! I wasn’t familiar with Courtney Walsh (will definitely be reading more by her), but my interest was piqued when I saw it recommended for fans of Annabel Monaghan, and then I was sold when I read Patti Murin narrates it. I would also recommend for fans of Katherine Center, similar vibe (and same narrator for most of her books!)

Claire has dedicated her life to being the perfect wife and mother, forcing herself to fit the mold of what she *should* be, without ever taking the time to think about what she *wanted* to be. With her daughter growing and needing her less and less, and her husband becoming her ex, she can’t base her identity on those labels anymore. Deciding to take charge of her life, she makes a list of things she wants accomplish, and finds herself living in a whole new city, surrounded by new people, and finally trying all the things she wants to (including some online dating imposed by her daughter and new neighbor friend, Miles)

Claire is such a funny and relatable FMC, and while her journey is positive and empowering, I appreciate that everything didn’t just magically go perfectly for her. She still had (probably more than) her fair share of embarrassment and struggle along the way. She was brave though, and her found family definitely helped her along. Miles was the perfect match to push her just slightly out of her comfort zone to help her grow, and such an incredible support along her journey - plus the banter and tension he added was perfect!

The writing really comes to life through Patti Murin’s narration, she always does such an excellent job conveying emotion. Excellent pacing, humor and romance to keep you interested, and genuinely just such an uplifting and empowering read!

🩷 What YOU Should Read Wednesday 🩷

Thank you @courtneywalsh @thomasnelsonfiction for the #gifted arc & extra love to @bookswithnopictures + @just_talking_to_my_shelf for organizing! [Pub Day: June 9]

I adored this book! It reminded me A LOT of Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center (which is my favorite romance novel of all time) I just adore reading about a women being brave & reinventing herself FOR HERSELF. There's something so powerful about rising up from a really dark part of your life to become this butterfly who embraces change, adventures and new.

Claire is the epitome of "I want to be her when I grow up" I love that she said im going to follow my dream + goals & its happening now. She's brave. She's strong. She's creative. She's a force.

If youre drawn to bucket lists & reading about characters taking their second chance at life, "Brighter Than Before" is a MUST!

🎧 You cannot go wrong with either the book or the audiobook, both are lovely experiences. I thought the narration was perfect. The woman really embodied Claire perfectly. She brought the whole journey to life in a really special way.

This was my first time actually reviewing an audiobook on time so i didnt know what to expect from it and what was expected from me. I actually had this book on my shelf as an ARC before and when i saw it few days ago that it has an audiobook i decided to give it another chance (its not the books fault I just wasnt in the mood to read this genre at that time). I wont really detail the things I loved about this book because it was already in my review of the epub file but all I can say is this... The audiobook narrator was fantastic. Her voice was incredibly engaging to listen to, bringing the characters' personalities to life beautifully. I think that's one of the reasons why I finished this quick.

After a messy divorce and a public rock bottom, mid-forties Claire Karadec leaves her life in Denver behind for a fresh start in Chicago. Determined to finally figure out what she wants, she navigates her new life with the help of neighbors and a dating profile created by her daughter. Courtney Walsh’s novel is a sweet, lighthearted journey of self-discovery and learning to live on one's own terms.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It especially resonated with me, being in the same demographic as the FMC. It was motivating to see her have success in starting over again at a time in life when others might consider it too risky.

Although I don't mind some spice in books, I appreciated that it really was not necessary in this book to enhance the plot in any way. It was truly a sweet, wholesome story about friendship ultimately becoming something more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. (I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh
Perfectly Narrated by Patti Murin
10 hours 36 minutes at 1x or about 7 hours at 1.5x
Genre: Rom-Com

“BEAUTIFUL THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY”

Claire, 40ish, finds herself suddenly single and in need of a fresh start far away from the painfully public incident that preceded her divorce.

So, she jots down a simple list of what she would like the next chapter of her life to look like which includes things like:
Move to a new city
Make a real friend
Get a job I Love

And, before she can change her mind, she actually leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart! ♥️

Baking has always been like therapy for her and although she would rather bake, than date- she eventually allows her wonderful daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her, in cahoots with her new neighbor Miles-who is charming but too often has much younger women leaving his apartment whenever she glances out of her window-not that she’s watching. 👀

Casual isn’t what she is looking for.

The last time she dated, (in school!) it was catching someone’s eye across the room, exchanging phone numbers and making out in the back seats of cars-so online dating proves to be challenging (disastrous).

But, as she BRAVELY begins tackling her list, she discovers that she is actually having FUN-and new friends become the found family she is looking for. In fact, she starts adding to her list, as she begins to check things off..

Move to a new city ✔️
Make a new friend ✔️
Get a job I love ✔️
Fall in love again?

This book was LAUGH OUT LOUD funny, charming, hopeful and everything I want in a ROM COM. It’s a clean romance (no spice at all) proving that chemistry isn’t just physical!

AVAILABLE June 9, 2026

I can’t wait to get started on Courtney Walsh’s backlist!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Fiction Audio for the ALC through NetGalley. I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

First off: Midwestern representation!!!!! Our main character, Claire, moves to Chicago with her daughter Amelia (Minnie) and a dream of starting over in a new life (without her ex-husband).

She’s making a list of goals and dreams and checking it twice, trying to decipher what’s realistic for her in life and love.

Then there’s Miles, one of her many nosy but overtly helpful neighbors, who takes it upon himself to help her sort through the many notifications on dating profiles Minnie has set up for her. I think you see where this is going, and it’s an absolute delight.

There’s bakery notions and Scotcharoo mentions and great female friendships and an endearing teenage daughter for comedic relief.

Brighter Than Before is the perfect rom-com and you should read it this summer!!! Fans of Abby Jimenez, (heartwarming love stories, quirky characters, midwest setting) should pick this up when it releases June 9th, 2026!

The narration by Patti Murin, a voice you may recognize from other great audiobooks, is 5 stars!

Brighter than Before is a delightful and relatable story about a scorned divorcee, Claire, who moves to Chicago to start a new chapter in her life - on her terms. As she goes on a journey to discover who she is, and what she really wants in life, she meets a wonderful cast of characters that offer her the chance to form a community; true friends who like her for who she is rather than who she’s married to.

Patti Murin’s narration is perfect for this story. Her performance is flawless, and I loved how she gave every single character a unique voice. In the beginning, she perfectly captures the scorned, vengeful and self-loathing internal monologue of Claire, our main character. As Claire starts to heal throughout the book, her voice changes to reflect her ever-growing sense of hope, belonging, and belief in herself. She really went above and beyond for the book.

As for the story itself, this is the first book I’ve read by Courtney Walsh, and it definitely won’t be my last. It had me hooked from beginning to end, which is a testament to Walsh’s writing. Claire’s POV, and her interactions with the book’s wide cast of characters - particularly her handsome yet emotionally unavailable neighbour, Miles - are written with such charm and wit that I found myself smiling from ear to ear throughout.

It’s clear throughout the book that the story is a message to the reader. A message that it’s never too late to take charge of your life, to live your dreams and to re-connect with yourself and your community. This is a message I really needed to hear. If you have ever felt stuck in life, or struggled to take a leap of faith towards what you really want, you definitely need to read this book. I am so, so grateful I found it, and grateful to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advance copy.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced audio copy of this book. As a 40-something, I especially enjoyed reading a book with MCs in my age range. :) this is a light and fun romance. Would make a great beach read. I loved the narrator of the audio book. I think I wish The Porch was a real place I could patronize.

This is my first time reading a book by Courtney Walsh and I will definitely be looking into more books by this author. Claire is post twenty-three years of marriage, Claire is reeling from divorce and public disgrace, moving to Chicago, she builds a new life from scratch but finds herself hesitant. Her daughter in a way to assist signs her up for a dating site. She ends up making friends, creating a personal to-do list, and navigating a series of hilariously awful dates before eventually meeting Miles. This is a laugh out loud story with second chances. Always love a book which the writing style allows the reader to laugh and smile. The romance itself is sweet and charming, with just the right balance of humor and emotion. This is a warm, comforting read that reminds you that even after hard times, brighter days really can come. Looking for those brighter times. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for this opportunity.

Her clean, feel-good style really shines here, with a story that feels genuine, uplifting, and easy to connect to. The main character’s journey of starting fresh and rediscovering herself is handled with warmth and honesty, and the romance adds just the right touch of charm. A heartfelt, encouraging read.
