Description

Life has a way of changing your path--and Claire Karadec certainly didn't plan on a fork in the road in her forties. From New York Times bestselling author Courtney Walsh comes a witty, warm, and uplifting novel about second chances, found family, and the courage it takes to become yourself--perfect for fans of Annabel Monaghan and Sarah Adams.

After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.

Before she can talk herself out of it, she takes a step of faith, puts her old life in the rearview mirror, and leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart. This one step sends Claire on a journey of self-discovery, giving her the courage to conquer her fears, one checklist item at a time, and showing her that life can be a whole lot brighter than she imagined.

She rediscovers a love for baking, stumbles into new friendships, and even allows her daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her. Perhaps the biggest surprise, though, is Miles, the charming, off-limits neighbor whose kindness makes it hard to remember why he's off-limits at all.

Between late-night journaling, disastrous first dates, great big lessons and priceless small victories, Claire learns to quiet the voice telling her she wasn't enough and listens to the one that asks the harder question . . .

What do I really want?

As old expectations loosen their grip, Claire discovers that belonging isn't a place you're invited to--it's a life you build one brave choice at a time. And the sweetest things often show up when you finally get out of your own way.

Lose yourself in a story that's equal parts heartwarming, hopeful, and full of joy. Early readers are loving the witty humor, uplifting journey, and sweet, clean romance that makes Brighter than Before such a life-affirming escape. Grab your copy today and discover a second-chance story about courage, connection, and building a life that feels truly your own.

Thank you NetGalley and publisher for this audio ARC.

Courtney Walsh is an auto buy for me. She writes such beautiful books. This one has become my favorite of her books I have read. This story was told so beautifully. Chicago is the backdrop for this story and her writing made me feel like I was right there. The story is about Claire and her moving to Chicago after a divorce and a very embarrassing moment in a fountain. Then there is Miles one of her new neighbors. Their chemistry is amazing and I loved all of the secondary characters as well.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an audio copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was excited to see another book by the author of "The Summer of Yes." This chick lit story was such a nice, lighthearted story. The character development was outstanding and I found myself rooting for the main characters throughout. Can't wait for Walsh's next book! 5 out of 5 stars!

Can I just say how much I LOOOOVE THIS BOOK? This is my first 10000/10 read of 2026!!!

This is my first Courtney Walsh book, and she absolutely knocked it out of the park. What she does so beautifully is bring out the very best in her characters even when they're at their absolute lowest. There's this tenderness to how she writes people rebuilding themselves.

But real talk? The setting is in Chicago, my first love when I migrated to the US years ago. She makes me miss living there so badly. And then she mentions Minghin?? EXCUSE ME. Please don't give out the best kept secrets! LOL. I was geeking out the entire time.

The story follows Claire, a divorcee who moved from Colorado to Chicago hoping to find herself again. Her daughter Minnie tries setting her up on dating apps, and then there's Miles, the next door neighbor she can't seem to shake. And BOY, OMG. The progression of Claire and Miles' story had me LIVING. No spice, no problem. I loved watching Claire's development after divorce just as much as I loved watching her fall for Miles. There's something so satisfying about watching a woman rediscover who she is on her own terms first.

"I want to figure who I am apart from a wife and a mom." YES QUEEN!!!!

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the ALC!

I loved this. It was so refreshing to read about older characters navigating big life changes and getting back into the dating world. The message that you’re never too old to start over or discover yourself really stood out. Claire was easy to relate to with her quirks, dreams, and awkward moments. This was sweet, uplifting, and just a genuinely enjoyable read.

Summary:
After a divorce in her forties, Claire moves to Chicago to start over. With help from new friends and a dating profile set up by her daughter, she begins to rediscover herself and figure out what she truly wants out of life.

I received an ALC of Brighter Than Before🎧

Claire is determined to start again after a messy divorce and an embarrassing moment being caught in a fountain at the charity event her cheating ex-husband was at. She sells her house and moves to Chicago, where she ends up in a building with some sweet but also nosy neighbours like Lorraine. She enters the dating scene again with the help of her daughter and her neighbour Miles, who happens to have a decent amount of relationship baggage himself. The road to dating again after divorce proves to be bumpy for Claire, and she continues to grow closer to Miles despite her head telling her he’s too close to the men she isn’t looking for.

I really enjoyed listening to this story. I thought having more mature main characters was a bonus to this wonderful story about starting again, making friends when you are an adult, and taking chances after heartbreak. This is definitely a good motivational story, not just a romance.

Audiobook review: Loved it! The narrator’s voice kept me engaged the whole time, and I thought her voice also suited the character very well.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A must-read! Out June 9th!

5 big beautiful stars for this joy of a book that I listened to the audio version. This book features Claire who is moving on with her life after it was turned upside down and how it is never too late to start over, love and learn again and do the things that scare you. The relationships including that with her daughter are oh so sweet and this book features a huge self discovery plot, found family and the cutest slow burn neighbour romance. Highly recommend!

I had the chance to listen to an ARC of *Brighter Than Before* by Courtney Walsh, and it was such a sweet, uplifting story.

One of my favorite parts was that Claire an older leading lady in her 40s navigating a second chance at life. I love an older main character! She moves to Chicago for a fresh start after a very public end to her marriage. Watching her slowly rebuild, find her footing, and open herself up to dating apps was fun to listen to. The cute next door neighbor definitely helps!

Her journey isn’t just about romance either; it’s about rediscovering herself, especially as she reconnects with her love of baking and begins to dream about a new path forward. She also works to build friendships and conquer her list.

If you enjoy closed-door romances, this one is especially charming. It’s light, funny, and full of warmth without losing emotional depth. Between the second chance romance, the building of new friendships, and the find oneself, this book felt like a hug in story form.

Definitely recommend if you’re looking for something cute, wholesome, and genuinely feel-good.

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh felt like such a breath of fresh air. This story follows Claire, a woman in her 40s starting over after a difficult divorce, who makes the bold decision to move to a new city and rebuild her life from scratch. She creates a list of new things to try and new goals to achieve.
What really stood out to me was how real Claire was. Her voice is honest, a little messy at times, but deeply relatable. The author does a beautiful job capturing what it’s like to start over when life doesn’t go the way you planned, and I found myself genuinely rooting for her every step of the way. It even made me want to create my own “try something new” list.
The romance was perfectly done. It’s a clean, closed-door story (just kisses, no spice). The tension, pacing, and development of the relationship felt natural without feeling being rushed, but also not too much of a slow burn that it got frustrating.
Overall, this book was sweet, insightful, and empowering. If you love stories about second chances, personal growth, and a well-developed, low-spice romance, this one is absolutely worth picking up.

One of my favorite romances this year!
Claire is recently divorced and making some questionable decisions in her efforts to let go. One humiliating example involved falling into a fountain while ‘stalking’ her ex. Not only did he see it, but everyone else she knew at this high-end function did too. Oh…let’s not even mention when the video went viral🫣

So, it’s clearly time to reinvent herself. Claire moves to Chicago and is befriended by a neighbor in her apartment complex, Miles. He’s determined to help Claire conquer her fears and get back out there!

LOVED this book! It had everything I look for in a rom-com. Witty banter, chemistry that felt real, and a main character in her 40’s that displayed maturity along with silliness. (Perfect combo in my opinion.) It delivered moments that had me grinning, laughing out loud and rooting for Claire. (Her online dating was absolutely hilarious).

I was lucky enough to have received both the digital and audio versions. Reading the first 50% on my kindle then switching to the audio for the final half. Flawless. You simply can’t go wrong with whatever mode you chose. I enjoyed each equally. (A rare treat!)

🎧Patti Murin brought Claire to life. She presented her exactly how I thought Claire would be.

If you’re searching for a delightfully fun and well written (non-spicy) romance, look no further!
Do I recommend this book? ABSOLUTELY!

I’m actually a bit sad that I have to say goodbye to these characters.😢

I absolutely adored my second read from this author, if at all possible, more than my first one My summer of Yes.

If you've been longing for an older protagonist in your romances, this will hit the spot. I loved the meet cute, the misunderstandings, the growing chemistry between the two, the new lease on life, uplifting outlook on daring to live according to your own standards, no-one else's. This was pure bliss.

I absolutely loved Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh. Honestly, I’d give it more than five stars if I could. I’ve loved every book written by Courtney Walsh! She never disappoints.
There’s so much to love: the meaningful friendships Claire builds along the way, her maturity as a main character, and the genuinely heartwarming feel of the story. I especially appreciated that it’s a clean romance. It made the book even more enjoyable.
I truly can’t say enough about how much I loved this one.

Contains an audiobook review.

This is a kisses only contemporary romance with a touch of women's fiction and a touch of romcom and a lot of heart.

I loved that Claire was a mature adult. Personally I needed a book with somewhat older main characters still trying to find a way to navigate life in a way that makes them happy.

I also appreciated that this story felt like something that could happen in real life. We saw a complete progression of a relationship. I didn't feel like I was reading a book with tropes.

It had lots of humor and also made you think. There are some life lessons in this story that I can apply, if I remember them.

I thought that the narrator for the audio was fabulous! She brought Claire to life and had great voices for the other characters as well. Highly recommend listening!

We can do hard things!

I am very thankful to Thomas Nelson, Zondervan Fiction Audio and Netgalley for the opportunity to listen to an advanced audio copy of this book. I'm voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh was exactly the kind of uplifting, feel-good story I needed.

Claire’s life completely falling apart in her forties could have felt heavy, but instead this story is full of hope, humor, and second chances. I loved the “starting over” theme and her list of goals—it made her journey feel both intentional and relatable. There’s something so satisfying about watching a character slowly rebuild a life that actually feels like hers.

The move to Chicago, the baking, the friendships… all of it had that cozy, comforting vibe I love. And the dating setup with her daughter? So fun and added just the right amount of chaos and charm.

Miles was such a sweet addition too—definitely gave that soft, off-limits tension without taking over the story. This really felt more like Claire’s personal growth journey than just a romance, which I appreciated.

If I had one small critique, it’s that parts of the story felt a little predictable—but honestly, that didn’t take away from how enjoyable it was. Sometimes you just want a story that feels warm, hopeful, and leaves you smiling.

Overall, this is a heartwarming, clean, second-chance story about finding yourself again—and realizing it’s never too late to start over. Perfect for fans of authors like Annabel Monaghan and Sarah Adams.

Can you fall inlove with a book a second time? Well that's just what I did. I read the ebook and now I've listened to the audiobook and I didn't think it could get better but guess what... it did!!! Claire has you hooked from the very 1st page with all that she is going through. Divorce is not something easily dealt with on your mental, emotional or physical self and sadly both characters in this book had heartbreaking experiences. Starting fresh and doing the soul searching was much needed. Being able to follow Claire's growth and amazing journey while making the best friends was beautiful. Throw in Miles and his perfect personality and this book was everything I never knew I needed. Perfect friends in Lennon and Larraine. Perfect book boyfriend in miles. Perfect mother/daughter relationship and support with Minnie. I need the book trophy to hurry and come out for my shelf!!!

Brighter Than Before by Chloe Walsh is an easy 5-star read for me. I originally read this story and completely fell in love with it, so getting the chance to experience it again through audio—thanks to NetGalley—was such a treat.

The narrator absolutely brought this story to life in the best way. Their performance added so much depth and emotion, making an already powerful story feel even more immersive. It felt like I was experiencing everything alongside the characters all over again.

This is one of those stories that just sticks with you. The emotions, the characters, the journey—it all hit just as hard the second time around. Falling in love with it twice is probably the best compliment I can give.

If you’re a fan of emotional, beautifully told stories, I highly recommend both reading and listening to this one. It’s truly something special.

✨ Starting over in your 40s, post-divorce, and dating again? This book makes it feel possible—and hilarious.
🎧 ALC Review 🎧
I loved this book so much—I may or may not have listened to it in one sitting!

Claire is forced to start over after a divorce in her 40s, but instead of letting it defeat her, she takes charge. She creates a list of things to try—new adventures, fresh starts, and stepping outside her comfort zone—and sets out to check them off one by one.
After moving to a new city, she dives back into the dating world… which proves to be quite the struggle—until she meets her neighbor, Miles

This book was funny, lighthearted, and full of laugh-out-loud moments, while also being incredibly relatable—especially for anyone navigating life changes and rediscovering themselves.

I really connected with Claire and her journey, and I loved how the story balanced humor with heart.
This was my first book by this author, and I’m already excited to read more!

I absolutely adored Claire and Miles. I loved that they were older (40’s) with grown children. I related so much to Claire and her story of starting over in a new place after a long marriage that ended in divorce.
We all need friends like the ones she met in her new life. Every character in this book was so lovable. I also enjoyed that this was a closed door romance. Sometimes it’s nice to have a feel good story.

This is one of those books that makes you crave for it to continue and has your cup overflowing! I already know this is a book I will need to re-read and want to tab so many passages!

Claire has had some of the most public and embarrassing moments! She had her feelings, she made her lists, and then she picked herself up and moved on in the most epic of ways! Reeling from her divorce, she makes the move to Chicago to finally put herself first. She has a list of items she is scared to do but that will help her regain her life. Her daughter Mimi is a constant support while away at school and set her up on a dating app to help push her back out into the world. She meets some amazing people on her journey to re-discover herself, but the most influential and one who becomes her biggest supporter is Miles. There are so many laugh out loud moments, witty banter, and beautiful and uplifting messages throughout this story. The growth of both Miles and Claire is exciting to witness, but really the found family, acceptance, and belief of these characters self-worth was heartwarming.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for this e-ARC of Brighter than Before. Courtney Walsh hit it out of the park with this story and reading her author's note added even more emotion to this journey! Highly recommend this read!

This book was absolutely a warm hug. I think what I enjoy so much about Courtney Walsh’s books is how uplifting they are. They give some gritty reality but then wrap you up in love and opportunity and community. It’s a sort of uncomplicated joy. I was really taken with Claire’s journey and how she healed from her ex-husband’s betrayal. Miles was the perfect romantic lead — such a kind and supportive partner — and I really believe these two would make it. An absolutely gorgeous book.

Courtney Walsh is a rockstar! This will be another huge hit for her! If she writes it, I will read it.

Claire finds herself at a point in life she never thought she would be. Mid-40s and divorced with no friends and no direction in life. After finding out, very publicly, that her husband wasn't faithful, she hit rock bottom. A year later with the help of her daughter and therapist, Claire moves to Chicago to finally fulfill her dream of living there. There she finds herself and finds out what she is made of. This book will take you on the journey of that discovery and all the people she meets along the way.

I'm in my late 40s and married with one kiddo in college and one at home. Even though, I've never been divorced, I still related to Claire the whole way through the book. As a wife and mom, I think. we all struggle with our identities outside of those two amazing roles. Claire is an example of strength and proof of what happens when you put yourself out there. I just loved this book so much.

I can't say enough good things about this book. READ IT! Patti Murin is the narrator and did a fabulous job. I've listened to a few of her books. Zero complaints.

Claire is a forty-something woman coming out of a terrible divorce with her cheating husband. Her beloved daughter Minnie is currently abroad and cheering her mom on from a distance, but Claire knows she needs to figure her life out. She spent her entire adult life putting her husband's needs above hers...who is she now? On a whim, Claire decides to head for Chicago, a city she has always loved. She rents an apartment and begins her journey to figure out her life. Along the way, she meets new people (including that intriguing neighbor of hers...), tries out the dating pool (thanks to her daughter creating her online dating profile), begins to build her confidence back, and finds her joy again in what she really wants to do with this second chance.

I absolutely LOVED this book. Not only did I enjoy the middle-aged main characters being highlighted and written as real people, but the storyline flowed so well throughout. Great dialogue with humor and heart, Courtney Walsh had me hooked from the beginning. Everything felt so relatable and heartwarming - I knew it would end well, but the journey to get there had me right there with Claire, cheering her on. This was absolutely a low spice and high character development easy read, which is exactly what I look for when recommending books to my library patrons who ask for less risque material.

The audiobook was narrated by the great Patti Murin, who always brings the stories she reads to life with such charm and heart. The audio was well-paced and clear, and Murin's vocals immediately brought you into Claire's world. Halfway through, I realized how much I wanted to be friends with Claire, and it was Murin's voice that really made this character and her story feel so real, like I was listening to a friend tell her me about her life.

Courtney Walsh’s books are pure magic, and this one completely swept me away.

Claire’s life takes a sharp turn when she discovers her husband is exactly that cliché—middle-aged with a younger mistress. Instead of letting it break her, she finally chooses herself and follows a long-held dream of moving to Chicago. Armed with a “What I Want” list, she begins building a new life, one step (and one brave choice) at a time.

I loved how this journey pushed Claire out of her comfort zone in such a real and relatable way. With a little nudge from her daughter Millie, she dips her toes back into the dating world. Enter Miles—her charming, slightly mysterious neighbor, who Millie is convinced is a total womanizer. He ends up helping guide Claire through the chaos of modern dating, and their dynamic quickly becomes one of my favorite parts of the story.

As Claire and Miles spend more time together, their chemistry just flows—it felt natural, warm, and completely engaging. Watching Claire realize what (and who) she truly wants, while navigating Miles’s anti-relationship stance, made the story all the more compelling.

This was such a heartfelt, uplifting read that I genuinely didn’t want it to end.

Thank you to @netgalley and @thomasnelsonfiction for this ALC of Brighter than Before. I absolutely loved this post-divorce romance. As a middle aged woman, I thought it was such a delightful read! I was laughing out loud so many times. This story, to me, was about self discovery. I loved the FMC, Claire, so much and I found myself relating to her in so many ways. This book was a five for me. I think I read it at the right time in my life and it really resonated with me. My favorite @courtneywalsh book yet!

I love Courtney Walsh’s books and this one didn’t disappoint. She writes the most relatable characters and delivers real feelings but in a hopeful way that I always end the book feeling happy. Now let’s pair that with my favorite narrator and it’s a win. This is perfection. Especially as a mom who sometimes wonders what’s next for me.

Claire Karadec didn't plan on reinventing herself in her forties but then again, she didn't plan on her husband blowing up her picture-perfect life either. So here we are.

Brighter than Before is the literary equivalent of a really good latte: warm, a little sweet, and exactly what you needed without knowing you needed it. What sets it apart is how believable the growth feels. Claire earns every breakthrough the messy, journal-it-out, bake-through-the-feelings way.

The Chicago setting is chef's kiss, and the charming off-limits neighbor is, well... dangerously charming.

First Courtney Walsh for me. Definitely not the last.
Fair warning: this book will make you want to write a list, move cities, and befriend your neighbor. Budget accordingly.

My first Catherine Walsh book and for sure not the last one!

I really enjoy the fact thar Claire was an older FMC! In a later stage of life! It was an amazing experience to see her expanding and developing in a personal aspect after a divorce!

She decides that after years living thought her ex-husband, it was time to live on her own terms!

A list, a new adventure and how at a later stage in life this woman finds herself

The narrator was lovely and brought Claire to Life

This was an OUTSTANDING delight. Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for my audio-arc of "Brighter Than Before." All opinions are my own.

I initially requested this audiobook because I adore the narrator (Patti Murin). Her voice blended perfectly with Courtney Walsh's writing voice.

The story follows Claire, a mid-forties divorcee who moved from Colorado to Chicago, hoping to find herself again. With the help of her neighbors and daughter, she tackles her list of being brave. One of those items is to begin dating again, and we are treated to some of the best/worst first dates.
Claire and Miles build from friends to so much more, which is sweet and completely endearing.

Walsh knocked it out of the park on this one. Clean, emotional, funny-what's not to like?

Five enthusiastic stars.
One chili pepper for sweet kisses.

This is a really sweet and uplifting book. The book also has some funny moments and a little bit of romance, which made it fun to read. This was a really cute romance with over 40 protagonists-a unicorn in the genre. Claire has been dumped by her husband in a very public, very humiliating way and her therapist suggests she journal and make a list of what she wants out of life. She decides to move to Chicago to start over and her journey back from heartbreak and humiliation is sweet and inspiring. This book is not deep, but it was a fun read and it made me think a lot about the power of believing in yourself and making the best of bad situations. This book releases on June 8-definitely worth putting in your beach bag! Thank you to NetGalley and to Thomas Nelson for the advanced copy of the audiobook!

**Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson, and Zondervan Fiction Audio for an ARC of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.**

5⭐️ for me! This translates to: I’d recommend it AND I’d revisit it. Every time I listened, it felt like I was journeying with an old friend through the ups and downs of rediscovering herself. 🩷 It hit on friendship, being honest, and vulnerable.

The story folllows Claire, a recently divorced empty nester who moves from Colorado to Chicago to start over again. She is the epitome of real, flailing in the beginning when she learns of her husband’s infidelity but then is determined to make beauty from the ashes. I was rooting for her the whole way, smiling often, and crying by the end. I also appreciated that the MFC was in her forties to offer a different perspective than what I am used to in rom-coms.

I am from the Midwest, so my only ick was how the narrator was a little over the top with one of the neighbor’s accents. Thankfully, the author was perfection so it made up for that part!

Best line: “I used to really resent getting pushed off that cliff, and then I realized it’s the only way you can soar.” 🕊️

Now… go read it! You won’t be disappointed . 😃

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh completely stole my heart. This is the kind of book that leaves you feeling hopeful, seen, and genuinely uplifted.

What I loved most is the found family element. It’s not just a side detail. It’s the heart of the story. Watching Claire slowly build a new life in Chicago, piece by piece, and find people who truly see her was so beautiful. These relationships felt real, supportive, and earned. There’s something incredibly special about the way this book shows that family isn’t always the one you start with, but the one you choose and grow into.

Claire’s journey is just as powerful. Seeing her start over in her forties, after everything falls apart, and still choose to chase her dreams was so inspiring. It’s not easy, and the book doesn’t pretend it is. There are setbacks, doubts, and moments where she could have easily gone back to what was safe. But she keeps going. She keeps choosing herself. That kind of quiet bravery made her so easy to root for.

I also have to mention how cute and funny the whole dating app situation was. Minnie and Miles teaming up behind the scenes to message potential dates for Claire had me smiling the entire time. It added such a light, playful layer to the story and made their dynamic even more endearing.

And Claire and Miles… the slow burn was perfection. The pining, the tension, the way Miles slowly softens for her while trying to hold himself back. It was so tender and so well done. Their connection felt genuine and deeply earned, which made every little moment between them hit that much harder.

This book feels like a reminder that it’s never too late to start over, to build something new, and to find your people. It’s hopeful, heartfelt, and honestly just made me really happy to read.

An easy five stars and one I won’t stop recommending.

This was such a refreshing read! I loved following main characters who were not in their early twenties, and Claire’s journey of rediscovering herself felt genuine and relatable. She has her stumbles, but her perseverance makes her story all the more rewarding.

The romance is clean while still feeling mature and realistic, and I really enjoyed the balance of emotional depth with humor and charm. It kept the story light without losing its heart.

This was the perfect palate cleanser after some heavier fantasy reads, which was exactly why I needed. My first Courtney Walsh book, but definitely not my last!

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh follows Claire, a woman in her mid-forties whose seemingly stable life unravels after a painful and very public discovery about her husband’s betrayal. Newly divorced and unsure of who she is outside of marriage and motherhood, Claire hits an emotional low before deciding to finally confront a question she’s long avoided: what does she truly want? Determined to rebuild her life, she makes a bold choice to leave everything familiar behind—selling her home and moving to Chicago to start fresh.

In Chicago, Claire creates a list of goals that push her far beyond her comfort zone, from forming meaningful friendships to pursuing work she loves and even stepping into the world of online dating—with a little help from her daughter. As she navigates awkward first dates, new relationships, and an unexpected connection with her charming but complicated neighbor Miles, Claire slowly rediscovers her confidence and sense of self. Through small victories and heartfelt setbacks, she learns that belonging and happiness aren’t things you wait for—they’re things you actively build, one brave decision at a time.

This is a warm, uplifting read that blends humor, romance, and emotional depth in a way that feels both comforting and inspiring. Courtney Walsh excels at writing relatable characters, and Claire’s journey of starting over later in life feels refreshingly honest and empowering. The story’s themes of second chances, found family, and personal growth make it especially appealing for readers who enjoy character-driven women’s fiction with a clean, heartfelt romance.

If you’re looking for a feel-good novel that still carries meaningful emotional weight—something that will make you smile, reflect, and root deeply for the main character—Brighter Than Before is an easy recommendation. It’s the kind of book that leaves you with a sense of hope and the reminder that it’s never too late to rewrite your story.

This was a hopeful, feel-good story about starting over, rebuilding confidence, and figuring out what you actually want out of life—with just the right mix of heart and light romance 😊

I really liked Claire as a main character—she’s coming off a painful, very public breakup, and I liked how the story doesn’t rush her healing but instead lets her rebuild piece by piece. The “blank page” idea feels very real, especially when she creates that list of goals to guide her forward.

What I enjoyed most: the checklist/self-reinvention journey ✍️ I really liked how each item—new city, new job, new friendships—becomes a tangible step toward rediscovering herself, rather than just a vague “fresh start.” It makes her growth feel intentional and satisfying.

I also loved the smaller touches—her rediscovered love of baking, the influence of her daughter Minnie, and the slightly chaotic dating setup 😄 Those moments add warmth and humor while still supporting her bigger emotional arc.

And of course, Miles 👀 I liked how their connection builds naturally, especially with that “off-limits” tension adding a little extra spark without overpowering the story’s focus on Claire’s personal growth.

If you love fresh-start stories, post-divorce healing, light romance, found friendships, self-discovery journeys, and uplifting, cozy reads, this is encouraging, relatable, and leaves you with that “things can get better” feeling 📖✨💞

Another smash hit by one of my favourite authors! Courtney Walsh never disappoints. Each time I read one of her books I’m convinced it’s my favourite…until the next one, anyway.

I felt for Claire right from that wince-inducing opening scene. I kept shouting, “Nooooo, turn bacccccckkkk!” but, alas, she didn’t listen to me and chaos ensued. The kind of chaos that you can laugh about…ten years down the road but is absolutely mortifying at the time and I was mortified right along with her.

So Claire decides to start fresh with a list of ‘new-to-her’ goals both big and small and, honestly, more chaos ensues but in the best of ways. New city, new friends, new experiences along with a host of hilarious (and sometimes not so hilarious) mix-ups that need sorting. Thankfully she has more triumphs than failures, though once she goes awry it’s always in epic fashion! And in the midst of all things new comes the possibility of romance…something she’s not keen on at all.

Walsh has created the perfect blend of emotion and humour with characters that are as endearing as they are flawed. Claire’s personal growth story is phenomenal and left me teary-eyed more than once. And that reluctant romance takes on a life of it’s own, full of tenderness and yearning and the fragile hope of a very different kind of future than she planned.

I listened to the audio edition of ‘Brighter Than Before’ narrated by Patti Murin who did a fabulous job portraying all these characters and their unique eccentricities and her performance really captured the heart of the story which I appreciate so much.

My thanks to Thomas Nelson, Zondervan Fiction Audio and Net Galley for providing me with an audio copy of this book.

I loved this book.Courtney Walsh has a way of writing life's challenges in a warm and connective way. The tone is always light and mostly even funny.

In this book, Claire is treated really poorly by her ex-husband. After her divorce, she decides to pull herself up by her bootstraps and figure out how to shape her life. I loved all the challenges she faced, very relatable. I loved her relationship with Miles and Minnie. Claire's romance with Mike's was slow, really slow, but built steadily over the book.

Lovely bookand Patti Murrin did it justice with her excellent narration.

This was unexpected! Totally felt like the sweetest Hallmark movie with far more humor. I loved the “list” Claire kept for herself, making it so clear just how much her character was growing and changing throughout the novel. I loved that we knew just how awful the ex was, but the author wasn’t giving our main female constant hatred and anger towards him. The side characters were so loveable and were all a benefit.

The narrator was listed as Patti Murin. I’ve heard her work before and she was the perfect voice for this book.

"Every storm has an ending."

I have never been disappointed by a Courtney Walsh book. They always feel like a breath of fresh air. This character really resonated with me because she is older and finding herself. Yes, there's romance, but for me the part of the story where she really found herself again and dealt with what she had gone through meant so much to me.

Claire is a character that so many women, and men, can relate to. She thought her life was done, and the romance was finished and she had it all. Then it all crumpled around her. She lost her husband, her friends and it was all publicly viral all over the internet at no fault of her own. She moved to somewhere knew and had to completely start over. She felt like she didn't even know what she wanted for herself. We've all been there - new job, new home, new city, etc. etc. etc. Claire's character is for the millenials, and as a millenial - I loved her and was so proud of her journey by the end.

Courtney's writing is some of my favorite. Her writing mixed with Patti Murin's narration, is some of my favorite works. Her writing is bingable, relatable, lots of details and the tension and yearning between the MCs really bled off the page. I felt everything that they were feeling and felt the true essence of the feelings they were developing throughout the story.

Def recommend this one! The Vibes:
-Found Family
-Slow Burn
-Self Discovery after Divorce
-Friends to Lovers
-Big City, Fresh Start
-REALLY funny meet cute
-Dating in Your 40s

I absolutely fell in love with Claire, and her world. Courtney Walsh's characters are always so well developed, they feel like real people going through real life. Claire and Miles and the whole crew are no different. The idea of starting over later in life, the way Claire does, is so incredibly terrifying. Yet somehow, Walsh makes it all feel real and approachable and hopeful, despite the heartbreak. The narrator did a beautiful job and I just simply never wanted this story to end!

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh
Narrated by Patti Murin

Forty something Claire Karadec has been having a bad year when she makes things worse by showing up at a big fund raiser (one she used to run for her husband before he dumped her) stuffed with junk food, wearing her grayest of gray sweats. All she was going to do was get a sneak peak at the event from a dark spot near the fountain but things didn't work out the way Claire hoped, just as her twenty three year marriage didn't work out, either. This latest horrible event finally prompts Claire to act on what her therapist told her she needs to do.

So Claire leaves Colorado behind to move to Chicago, a place she had always wanted to live. Her life had revolved around her domineering husband and wonderful daughter. It's time for Claire to do things for herself, the time is now and the door is open.

This story is so funny and heartwarming. Claire jumps from her "invisible to everyone who used to know her as her husband's wife" life to being all alone in a new city. She makes lists of things she wants to do and they are daunting to her, such as eat out alone, make a friend, get a hobby. And Claire wants real romance in her life, not what she had before, being her husband's unpaid, unacknowledged personal assistant until she was replaced by someone younger.

Right off the bat, Claire meets Miles, her neighbor, and what a hunk of man is Miles. But he's also fun loving, happy all the time, so very calm and lowkey content. But Claire keeps her distance when it comes to the heart because she is sure that Miles, a man who never wants to be tied down again, wants the opposite of the long term, fully committed marriage that Claire longs for in her future.

Miles and Claire's daughter, Minnie, are devoted to getting Claire on a cycle of dating all kinds of men and the dates are both hilarious and embarrassing. Claire knows she does not need men who will tear her down, use her, or waste her time. And, Claire begins to see what she wants for herself as a career, something she loves to do and is very good at doing.

Patti Murin is great with the narration and even when there are texts in the story, they are easy to understand and so very funny. There are some rude and mean folks in this story, that's how Claire got to where she was at the beginning of the book, but there are also so many amazing and caring people, too. Claire even has to learn to not judge people before she really knows them, the one who might be the most lowkey and happy could be the one who is hurting the most. This audiobook is a winner!

I actually already read this book, but I decided to request the audiobook because I wanted to revisit the warmth and sense of community it captures so well. I almost never reread books, but the idea of experiencing one I already loved in a new way—and especially since it’s our official book club pick for June—made me think, why not?

The characters felt very real to me. Claire is relatable and imperfect in a way that makes you root for her, while Miles is supportive, a little persistent, and genuinely kind. I also really appreciated the friendships Claire builds along the way—the community aspect adds a comforting layer without ever feeling forced or overdone.

What stood out most was the character development. Claire’s growth is gradual and believable, which keeps the story grounded and makes her journey feel authentic rather than rushed.

The audiobook adds a new layer of immersion, and for a story that’s already a five-star read, it’s a really rewarding way to experience it again.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advance copy of Brighter Than Before

I absolutely adored this one! I wasn’t familiar with Courtney Walsh (will definitely be reading more by her), but my interest was piqued when I saw it recommended for fans of Annabel Monaghan, and then I was sold when I read Patti Murin narrates it. I would also recommend for fans of Katherine Center, similar vibe (and same narrator for most of her books!)

Claire has dedicated her life to being the perfect wife and mother, forcing herself to fit the mold of what she *should* be, without ever taking the time to think about what she *wanted* to be. With her daughter growing and needing her less and less, and her husband becoming her ex, she can’t base her identity on those labels anymore. Deciding to take charge of her life, she makes a list of things she wants accomplish, and finds herself living in a whole new city, surrounded by new people, and finally trying all the things she wants to (including some online dating imposed by her daughter and new neighbor friend, Miles)

Claire is such a funny and relatable FMC, and while her journey is positive and empowering, I appreciate that everything didn’t just magically go perfectly for her. She still had (probably more than) her fair share of embarrassment and struggle along the way. She was brave though, and her found family definitely helped her along. Miles was the perfect match to push her just slightly out of her comfort zone to help her grow, and such an incredible support along her journey - plus the banter and tension he added was perfect!

The writing really comes to life through Patti Murin’s narration, she always does such an excellent job conveying emotion. Excellent pacing, humor and romance to keep you interested, and genuinely just such an uplifting and empowering read!

🩷 What YOU Should Read Wednesday 🩷

Thank you @courtneywalsh @thomasnelsonfiction for the #gifted arc & extra love to @bookswithnopictures + @just_talking_to_my_shelf for organizing! [Pub Day: June 9]

I adored this book! It reminded me A LOT of Happiness for Beginners by Katherine Center (which is my favorite romance novel of all time) I just adore reading about a women being brave & reinventing herself FOR HERSELF. There's something so powerful about rising up from a really dark part of your life to become this butterfly who embraces change, adventures and new.

Claire is the epitome of "I want to be her when I grow up" I love that she said im going to follow my dream + goals & its happening now. She's brave. She's strong. She's creative. She's a force.

If youre drawn to bucket lists & reading about characters taking their second chance at life, "Brighter Than Before" is a MUST!

🎧 You cannot go wrong with either the book or the audiobook, both are lovely experiences. I thought the narration was perfect. The woman really embodied Claire perfectly. She brought the whole journey to life in a really special way.

This was my first time actually reviewing an audiobook on time so i didnt know what to expect from it and what was expected from me. I actually had this book on my shelf as an ARC before and when i saw it few days ago that it has an audiobook i decided to give it another chance (its not the books fault I just wasnt in the mood to read this genre at that time). I wont really detail the things I loved about this book because it was already in my review of the epub file but all I can say is this... The audiobook narrator was fantastic. Her voice was incredibly engaging to listen to, bringing the characters' personalities to life beautifully. I think that's one of the reasons why I finished this quick.

After a messy divorce and a public rock bottom, mid-forties Claire Karadec leaves her life in Denver behind for a fresh start in Chicago. Determined to finally figure out what she wants, she navigates her new life with the help of neighbors and a dating profile created by her daughter. Courtney Walsh’s novel is a sweet, lighthearted journey of self-discovery and learning to live on one's own terms.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It especially resonated with me, being in the same demographic as the FMC. It was motivating to see her have success in starting over again at a time in life when others might consider it too risky.

Although I don't mind some spice in books, I appreciated that it really was not necessary in this book to enhance the plot in any way. It was truly a sweet, wholesome story about friendship ultimately becoming something more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ARC. (I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.)

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh
Perfectly Narrated by Patti Murin
10 hours 36 minutes at 1x or about 7 hours at 1.5x
Genre: Rom-Com

“BEAUTIFUL THINGS HAPPEN WHEN YOU GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY”

Claire, 40ish, finds herself suddenly single and in need of a fresh start far away from the painfully public incident that preceded her divorce.

So, she jots down a simple list of what she would like the next chapter of her life to look like which includes things like:
Move to a new city
Make a real friend
Get a job I Love

And, before she can change her mind, she actually leases an apartment in Chicago, the city that has always had her heart! ♥️

Baking has always been like therapy for her and although she would rather bake, than date- she eventually allows her wonderful daughter, Minnie, to create a dating profile and choose her dates for her, in cahoots with her new neighbor Miles-who is charming but too often has much younger women leaving his apartment whenever she glances out of her window-not that she’s watching. 👀

Casual isn’t what she is looking for.

The last time she dated, (in school!) it was catching someone’s eye across the room, exchanging phone numbers and making out in the back seats of cars-so online dating proves to be challenging (disastrous).

But, as she BRAVELY begins tackling her list, she discovers that she is actually having FUN-and new friends become the found family she is looking for. In fact, she starts adding to her list, as she begins to check things off..

Move to a new city ✔️
Make a new friend ✔️
Get a job I love ✔️
Fall in love again?

This book was LAUGH OUT LOUD funny, charming, hopeful and everything I want in a ROM COM. It’s a clean romance (no spice at all) proving that chemistry isn’t just physical!

I can’t wait to get started on Courtney Walsh’s backlist!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Fiction Audio for the ALC through NetGalley. I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

First off: Midwestern representation!!!!! Our main character, Claire, moves to Chicago with her daughter Amelia (Minnie) and a dream of starting over in a new life (without her ex-husband).

She’s making a list of goals and dreams and checking it twice, trying to decipher what’s realistic for her in life and love.

Then there’s Miles, one of her many nosy but overtly helpful neighbors, who takes it upon himself to help her sort through the many notifications on dating profiles Minnie has set up for her. I think you see where this is going, and it’s an absolute delight.

There’s bakery notions and Scotcharoo mentions and great female friendships and an endearing teenage daughter for comedic relief.

Brighter Than Before is the perfect rom-com and you should read it this summer!!! Fans of Abby Jimenez, (heartwarming love stories, quirky characters, midwest setting) should pick this up when it releases June 9th, 2026!

The narration by Patti Murin, a voice you may recognize from other great audiobooks, is 5 stars!

Brighter than Before is a delightful and relatable story about a scorned divorcee, Claire, who moves to Chicago to start a new chapter in her life - on her terms. As she goes on a journey to discover who she is, and what she really wants in life, she meets a wonderful cast of characters that offer her the chance to form a community; true friends who like her for who she is rather than who she’s married to.

Patti Murin’s narration is perfect for this story. Her performance is flawless, and I loved how she gave every single character a unique voice. In the beginning, she perfectly captures the scorned, vengeful and self-loathing internal monologue of Claire, our main character. As Claire starts to heal throughout the book, her voice changes to reflect her ever-growing sense of hope, belonging, and belief in herself. She really went above and beyond for the book.

As for the story itself, this is the first book I’ve read by Courtney Walsh, and it definitely won’t be my last. It had me hooked from beginning to end, which is a testament to Walsh’s writing. Claire’s POV, and her interactions with the book’s wide cast of characters - particularly her handsome yet emotionally unavailable neighbour, Miles - are written with such charm and wit that I found myself smiling from ear to ear throughout.

It’s clear throughout the book that the story is a message to the reader. A message that it’s never too late to take charge of your life, to live your dreams and to re-connect with yourself and your community. This is a message I really needed to hear. If you have ever felt stuck in life, or struggled to take a leap of faith towards what you really want, you definitely need to read this book. I am so, so grateful I found it, and grateful to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the advance copy.

This is my first time reading a book by Courtney Walsh and I will definitely be looking into more books by this author. Claire is post twenty-three years of marriage, Claire is reeling from divorce and public disgrace, moving to Chicago, she builds a new life from scratch but finds herself hesitant. Her daughter in a way to assist signs her up for a dating site. She ends up making friends, creating a personal to-do list, and navigating a series of hilariously awful dates before eventually meeting Miles. This is a laugh out loud story with second chances. Always love a book which the writing style allows the reader to laugh and smile. The romance itself is sweet and charming, with just the right balance of humor and emotion. This is a warm, comforting read that reminds you that even after hard times, brighter days really can come. Looking for those brighter times. Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for this opportunity.

I’ve read several books by Courtney Walsh, and Brighter Than Before is one of my favorites. Her clean, feel-good style really shines here, with a story that feels genuine, uplifting, and easy to connect to. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher Thomas Nelson Fiction for the audio eARC of this beautiful, hopeful, cozy 5-star read! Brighter Than Before is a warm, uplifting story about starting over and finding yourself again. What a dream come true to watch Claire build her own successful bakery, but it’s clear that she never could have done it alone. Her journey is shaped and supported by a wonderful “village” of new friends who truly become family. The characters feel real and relatable, especially Claire as a woman in her 40s learning to rebuild her life with courage and honesty. The story balances humor, heart, and thoughtful moments about self-worth, second chances, and taking risks. Overall, this is a cozy, hopeful read that reminds you it’s never too late to start over.

I knew I loved Courtney Walsh's books, but Brighter Than Before met and exceeded every expectation I had going into it! This set the reading bar pretty high for my TBR stack!

40-something Claire has molded herself into the perfect society wife - doing lunch, spa days, and chairing THE benefit gala of the season - until she finds out in the worst way possible, that not only is her husband a cheating rat, but everyone in their "friends" circle knows about it. Humiliated, angry, and just plain depressed, she spends a year mourning the life she lost through no fault of her own. Yes, she's in therapy, but telling herself to take the steps she needs to heal are a whole lot different than actually taking those steps, until she brings one final humiliation onto herself, making her see that she needs to change some things. First and foremost, she needs to sell the house her divorce left her with, and move to the city she has always wanted to live in - Chicago.

Claire has a list of all the things about herself that she stifled to fit into her husband's world, and she begins checking experiences off from the start. I loved this character so much. Her bravery in the face of trying circumstances shone through the story. I also loved the totally swoon-worthy neighbor, Miles, who steps in to help her achieve her goals.

Walsh has been advertising her books as "swoon without spice" and Brighter Than Before delivers with so many laughs to go along with the tears. It gets every star from me. I'd rate it higher if I could!

I really enjoyed this book. Courtney Walsh just has a way of writing stories that feel warm, comforting, and genuinely hopeful.

Claire was such an easy character to connect with. Watching her rebuild her life after everything falls apart felt messy and real in the best way. This bok was more than just a romance—it was really about rediscovering yourself, figuring out what you actually want, and realizing it’s not too late to change your life.

The friendships and found family elements were probably my favorite part. I could have stayed in this world with these characters so much longer.

And of course, I loved Miles. The romance was charming and heartfelt, but it never overshadowed Claire’s personal growth, which I appreciated.

Overall, this book just made me happy. It was funny, hopeful, and full of characters that felt like real people.

This book was a surprise 5 star for me. It is a book about finding yourself after such a huge betrayal, finding your tribe, and trusting love again even after all the hurt. I love how Miles quietly loves Claire and shows his love through his action instead of words. I just love how he supports her dream, shows up for her, and works through his own issues so that they can have a healthy relationship.

And Claire’s character was so inspiring. How she rebuilt herself from the ending of her marriage and what is undoubtedly her most embarrassing moments witnessed by all of Denver. I absolutely love her lists, watching her explore new foods, learn new things, chase her dream, and for her to trust herself again.

And her new tribe is what everyone needs in their life but only few are so lucky to have. Listening to them show up for her is so heartwarming.

Also the narrators did a great job conveying both Miles and Claire’s character.

Thank you NetGalley, Thomas Nielsen Fiction, and Courtney Walsh for the ALC!

Absolutely loved this book. A wonderfully written story about one woman’s resilience and way back to herself when she is betrayed by those closest to her. When Claire finds out that her husband is not only cheating, but leaving her in his wake, she takes a while to find her footing. By that I mean she totally falls apart, but then has a moment of clarity and starts over. New city, new friends, new everything. I loved listening to a story of a woman, who though betrayed, doesn’t give up, finds her inner strength, some amazing new friends, new love, and yes, she stumbles a bit along the way and yet finds her way to her best life with an open mind and open heart. Loved the narration as well;

I can count on one hand the number of audiobooks I have listened to after reading the book and Brighter Than Before is one of them! This audiobook is amazing because it feels like a friend is telling you her story. The narrator, Patti Murin, really brings the story to life.

Claire is blindsided when her marriage suddenly ends. Heartbroken, she decides to move to across the country and start working towards goals she has finally decided put on paper.

I absolutely loved this audiobook! It was heartfelt, funny, swoony and gave me the feeling of not wanting to stop listening. Courtney Walsh has a gift of making you relate to, care about, and root for any character she writes. Although some readers may be in a different stage of life, Courtney Walsh does an amazing job of making you feel what the character feels and relate to her. I love the underlying message that that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. The MMC is perfect in every way and I love how well he compliments Claire. He has the quiet strength and steadiness that is not often portrayed in romance books. I really enjoyed the journal entries and text messages woven in and also the theme of found family.

I highly recommend this audiobook!! Thank you Courtney Walsh, Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for the ALC; all opinions expressed are my own.

Brighter Than Before By Courtney Walsh

This opens PULLING on the heartstrings.
Reclaiming a life after a divorce is exactly what Claire is hoping to do.
I loved watching her learn to love things she once did. Learn new things, Dream for herself, set goals of her own. Honestly just learn to be herself again!
Minnie, Claire's adult daughter and Miles her new neighbor coming together to help Claire get back out there on some dates was so great!
The banter in this is so good! well done!!
The moments Miles says and does the SWEETEST things; I am kicking my feet and giggling.
Claire's dates are honestly so relatable!
Being yourself and showing up for yourself and seeing you are worth your own time is a true gift and something SO many keep on the back burner.
Show up for yourself, love yourself, and let others love you. You are worth it!

LOVED the narrator, fantastic job!

This is an absolutely delightful clean contemporary romance about Claire, a recently divorced woman in her 40s, starting fresh with a new life in Chicago. You will absolutely know where this story is headed from the very beginning, but the journey to the HEA was satisfying all the same.

I’ve said it before, but Patti Murin is one of the best narrators out there and I highly recommend the audio for this one!

This is a brilliant book - a woman’s fiction that makes you feel all the emotions as we journey along with the main characters new path.

This story follows Claire Karadec following her humiliating and public divorce. She decides to create a list of things she wants to achieve and we are swept away in the discovery of oneself in a new city, with new friends. I didn’t dislike anything about this book. It’s happily predictable but not in a boring way. It’s a great read.

First of audiobook, this was an audiobook and I adored it. Claire was an amazing FMC in my honest opinion. But as a forty something divorcee, I found her so relatable and inspiring. It's so easy to lose yourself in a relationship and let it dictate your actions, hobbies and way of life. When ripped away and forced to start over, it can be debilitating. The journey to find yourself can be slow and arduous, finding your people make it better. And you do need to find your people, because you're never the same again. Claire being able to make that list and work with these goals are the same kind of things I discuss with my therapist. For her to find friends and a new love interest in Miles and doing the hard things. She really was able to come out better/ brighter than before and find true healing and peace. I'll always root for characters like this.

This was a wonderful story of love, personal growth, and finding self. The characters were very relatable and the story telling was immersive enough that you could picture Chicago as you listened.

I felt her frustration when still dealing with her ex and completely understood everything she wrote down on her list. I loved getting to hear all of the different dates she went on and the fact she was invited to get her teeth looked at by the dentist she was dating had me cackling.

Favorite quotes: “Maybe this is how you fall in love. Maybe it’s not a big grand gesture that sweeps you off your feet. Maybe it’s the little things that are going to be hanging around long after the zips and zaps are gone”

“Good things grow out of pain.”

If you want to smile, this is definitely the book. I was cheesing so hard.

Claire 2.0 is so much more than the original version. I loved that she took chances and decided that fear wouldn’t stop her from living the dreams she had always ignored in the past.

Her friendship with Miles and how that developed had me giddy.

I’ve yet to meet a Courtney Walsh book that I didn’t love.

And as always, Patti Murin is wonderful. She breathed life into these characters and I enjoyed her narration so much.

Thank you to Courtney Walsh , Thomas Nelson Fiction Audio, Thomas Nelson Fiction, and NetGalley for allowing me an early copy of this audiobook to listen to and review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Claire Karadec has been knocked down by life. She found out her husband was cheating on her in a very public way. She spent a year wallowing in self pity before finally hitting rock bottom. When she hit bottom she realized she must make some changes. She picked up and moved to a new city. When she got to her new home she began to cross things off her list. She had many surprises- one of which was her neighbor Miles. Many other great things happen- with a few setbacks- but she learns that her friends are there for her.

What a great romcom! There are cute things that happen, and so many lessons learned. I love that the main characters are older, and are having to learn to adjust to being single and to find themselves. The book teaches a great lesson about self worth. My one issue is that there were great moments for faith that were missed. I get that Courtney normally doesn’t write faith blatantly into her stories, but I think this one missed some opportunities. I loved the forgiveness that was presented in an honest way. Overall the book was great!

This audiobook is well narrated by the She kept my attention. I don’t think her Chicago accent was spot on, but it was tolerable. Overall, I think it well done and well edited.

If you love light books that also teach a bit of a lesson you might enjoy this one. If you like books about older main characters, you might like this one. If you are looking for faith filled writing, this is not your book.

OH MY GOSH!!! I absolutely ADORE Brighter than Before! I haven’t read many romances where the main character was over the age of 30 and it was quite refreshing. Claire was such an amazing character and I loved her so much! Her resilience and the way she went out of her comfort zone many, many times, was inspiring. All of the characters had life to them and they all were such a great addition to the story and they served their purpose. Loraine is my fave (: The found family aspect was heartwarming. Ahhh I just loved it so much and I hope to read more from Courtney!

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for an advanced copy of this book and audiobook. All thoughts and opinions are completely my own. Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh was such a cute and enjoyable read. It follows a friends-to-lovers storyline that is definitely predictable at times, but honestly, that is part of what made it so comforting and fun to read. I also think I was the perfect demographic for this story. While I am not divorced like the main character, I am around the same age and found a lot of Claire’s thoughts, worries, and experiences relatable. I really enjoyed watching both Claire and Miles grow throughout the story, both individually and together. Their relationship felt warm and natural, and it was easy to root for them. The audiobook narration by Patti Murin was perfection and added so much charm and emotion to the story. She was the perfect fit for these characters and made the listening experience even better. Overall, this was a heartfelt and uplifting romance that I would definitely recommend.

5⭐️ no spice. This is my 5th and FAV Courtney Walsh book, I loved it so much! It has so many of the best elements: post divorce comeback, baking greatness, golden retriever MMC Miles, found family, the list goes on!

The FMC Claire starts out ROUGH as she's reeling through post-divorce revelations and the beginning scene is both cringeworthy and hilarious - you definitely feel the second-hand embarrassment! It was relatable and the humor of it made me love it.

I love that both the main characters have grown daughters vs children, so it really is mostly about THEM and not so much the family dynamic. This allowed a lot more found family vibes as the FMC moves to a new city to start fresh.

Miles was the best - such a great, hunky golden retriever MMC who allowed Claire to find her own self and worth, which made their bond even stronger.

Lastly, Patti Murin was the perfect narrator for this as she always nails those awkward/funny moments! She is so good!

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for Brighter than Before’s ALC! I adore Courtney Walsh audiobooks, she is an auto-listen author for me. They are the perfect sweet romance books I can listen to while I work and have the entire emotional spectrum.

I kept swiping past this title and him-hawing around because the blurb referenced that it was about, essentially, a single mother and those are not my personal-favorite storylines… then I thought of how in my favorite book by her she wrote a child into the story that I thoroughly enjoyed and said ‘waaayeeelll… what the heck’. Turns out the daughter in this story is actually an adult and such a fun character! I was very glad my love for Courtney Walsh’s writing won out, this was a great audiobook!

The narration was so perfect and the characters were all presented with organic chemistry. There were no blips in the audio, it was crystal clear and had a great pacing. I sometimes increase my audio speed a touch, to make up for enunciation and pausing— I dropped my speed back to 1.00 with no complaints at all!

The FMC was reeling from her unfortunately higher profile divorce, an ex-husband who still attempts to use her, learning how to be her own person, all alone in a new city. The MMC was a fun quirky dynamic, working with her daughter to set her up on a dating app, while simultaneously “not being into her”. The highs and lows of online dating through the perspective of a 46 year old is just as chaotic as the younger dater’s experiences. She realizes her dream, checks things off her list of self-discovery, and becomes comfortable within herself.

Thank you, Thomas Nelson Fiction, for an ALC of Courtney's latest novel, Brighter than Before.

This is in the top for all of Courtney's books for me. It felt relatable and inspiring. I think in lists and this story made me want to create my own list of dreams, things that scare me, trying new things, etc.

Claire, a forty-something, has had her life shattered by her unfaithful husband, who has been making the decisions for her life and their family for years. What felt devastating at first has given Claire a blank page to do with what she wants for the first time in her life. I keep trying to call this book "Better than Before" instead of "Brighter than Before" because she truly is better.

I love this story of second chances, self discovery, found family, and resilience. Walsh transported me with her story. I wanted to try the foods and visit the places. It was a great listen on audio but also enjoyable as a physical read.

Things haven't gone this right for me in years, and now everything feels bigger and brighter and more beautiful.

Claire goes through an amazing transformation in the pages of this book. She is the mother of a college student and has spent 20+ years with a man who betrayed her. As you can see from the above quote, losing her husband was not the end of her story.

There were many things to love about this amazing new read from Courtney Walsh. Let me count the ways this book amazed me:

👱I loved it that Claire was in her 40's with reason to be wary of looking for love. Her neighbor Miles also has a broken marriage in his rearview. The friendship they begin to build when Claire relocates to Chicago was delightful and so encouraging for them both.

🤩There were some fun new words in this read: GROUTFIT = Claire's favorite gray sweatshirt and not quite matching sweatpants. S.E.P. = Someone else's Problem. FOMMY = Father plus mommy (or Stay-at-home dad).

😎The Chicago setting! My husband is from that area and we have enjoyed spending time on Navy Pier and visiting museums and other tourist destinations. When Claire was going on her many first dates with men from the app, we learned more about what there is to do there whether your date is a success or not.

🍪The baked goods that Claire likes to make had my mouth watering. Her dream of opening a bakery where people can "SIT, SIP, and STAY AWHILE" sounds like my kind of place. If I lived near her business, I would be a regular (and would probably bug her for some of those recipes).

🎧Patti Murin once again brings a romcom to life in her own signature way. I was thrilled to get an early copy of the audiobook from Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for also providing a digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Available on June 8, 2026.

A phenomenal story of community and redemption. I loved every moment of this. Claire and Miles have been my favorite book couple this year! Between Claire’s date mishaps, their supportive families and her making her dreams come true, I couldn’t put it down. I loved the Chicago setting and how realistic the story felt.

Oh my god. I loved this book! If you ever feel down and like life is kicking you, remember that “good things grow out of pain” and read this book. It is a warm hug in a book about starting over and finding yourself. It is hopeful, uplifting and absolutely adorable. As the narrator of the audiobook, Patti Murin did a fantastic job bringing it to life as per usual.

All the feels and all the stars for this one!

I had seen a few people posting about ARCs for this on Instagram and so I rushed over to NetGalley and snagged a copy of the audiobook. Thank you to the publisher for a copy! I love Courtney’s books they always leave you feeling like a warm hug. I’m fresh off the end of school and the chaos of maycember and I really needed this book to give me a good reason to cry and then also set my priorities back in line and end with the happiest ended that makes you just want to grin and sigh.

If you have read and loved Summer of Yes or Isadora Bentley and then you throw in a recently divorced woman looking for a fresh start and a neighbor who also has his own secret heartbreak you have Brighter than Before.

It’s full of hilarious moments that will have you unable to hold back your grin and profound statements that really have you evaluating your life. I loved it and it’s definitely going to be one I reread in the future. I listened to the audiobook and there were so many parts I wanted to highlight! I need to go back and savor it and save all those beautiful words!

Brighter than Before was one of my most anticipated reads. After The Summer of Yes and Everything is Coming Up, Rosie Courtney Walsh became an instant read for me. Brighter than Before did not disappoint, and it’s now my favorite book by Walsh.

The story was inspiring. Claire went through a messy divorce with a very embarrassing and very public breakdown. She moves to a new city to start a new life. Chicago was the city she went to as it was somewhere she always wanted to live. She quickly meets Miles, who is one of my favorite characters in all books. The two build a friendship, but it’s easy to see they both want more but are afraid to admit it.

Through Walsh’s writing, Chicago comes alive. The community that Claire discovers is enough to make anyone want to pick up their bags and move.

I don’t want to talk about much to avoid any spoilers. It was so good that you need to read it. I will leave you with the fact that there is a moment in the book where Claire makes a speech and thanks some people. I challenge you not to get teary-eyed during that scene.

This book needs to be one of your next reads.

Brighter Than Before is a fantastic read! Super cute and fun book. The perfect 90’s Rom-Com that I just couldn’t put down. I’m sad i’m finished reading, but the characters will stay with me. This was the first time that I had read a Courtney Walsh book, but most definitely will not be my last.

What an absolute masterpiece of a book. I had the privilege of listening to the audiobook version via NetGalley, and I was completely captivated from start to finish.

Courtney Walsh has crafted a story that is equal parts heartbreaking, hopeful, and entirely full of joy.

The story follows a newly divorced woman who finds herself facing a completely blank page for her future. Watching her navigate the emotional fallout of her past while trying to find herself again was deeply moving. This isn’t just a story about starting over; it’s about the courage it takes to actively build a life worth living. Along the way, she finds her people, stumbling into beautiful new friendships and a supportive community that reminds her she belongs.

My absolute favorite element of the book was her list of things she wanted . It served as the perfect visual for her personal growth. Watching her face the things that scared her, quiet the doubts in her head, and tackle that list one brave choice at a time was incredibly inspiring and life affirming.

⭐️This is a 10/10, fantastic read. ⭐️

The audiobook narration was wonderful, and I truly cannot wait for everyone to get their hands on this book when it releases. If you love witty, uplifting women’s fiction focused on found family, healing, and self-discovery, put this at the very top of your TBR list!

I loved this so much! It was my first Courtney Walsh book and I know it won't be my last. This book is very light-hearted and fun. I was immediately hooked when the fountain scene happened. It had me laughing out loud. Claire, a divorced mother in her 40s, is forced to start over after a messy divorce leaves her feeling embarrassed and let down. She has to decide whether to stay stuck where she is or pick up the pieces and move forward.

Lists are involved (which made me love it even more), goals are set, and new dreams begin to take shape. The writing is witty, humorous, and engaging. The characters? Each one had a distinctive personality, very memorable and likable. I found myself instantly cheering Claire on. If she wanted to climb to the moon wearing swimming fins, I’d still support her the whole way. She’s awkward, generous, brave, and incredibly real.

My biggest takeaway from the book was how authentic Claire felt as a character. Her whole life falls apart and she’s forced to rebuild from scratch, and she handles it in the most human way possible; imperfectly, emotionally, and honestly. "Good things grow out of pain" - Such a great quote because it's so real. It's the theme of this book.

I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys cozy love stories filled with hope, fresh starts, humor, and baked goods!

The found family aspect was so heartwarming and I just loved how everyone came together to help Claire make her dreams come true. I also loved Claire and Miles’ relationship and the slow progression from friends to more. This is a new favorite by Courtney and one I will be recommending to everyone. I loved seeing Claire get her spark for life back after slowly checking things off her list. She was willing to start fresh to be happy and heal from how her ex husband wronged her. I'm obsessed with the idea of The Porch and wish it was real, it would be so cute!! Claire's new found community and friendships really lifted her up and supported her which which was a great way for the book to come to a close.

Such a great story. Claire, our FMC, is so great. I want to be friends with her. Her situation is not one have navigated, but the author does a great job writing Claire’s terrible divorce and all the embarrassing moments. But that’s not the end of Claire’s story. It gets way better.

This is very clean. Little to no spice and no language that I can remember. I loved it!!! Books like this make me want to read more romance.

Really cute story, though how the main character chick really didn’t know who she was or even what food she liked because of her ex-husband is just beyond insane. I liked the narrator and the story. It was a quick, fluffy read. I liked it a lot more than the author’s other books.

Claire is in her forties and starting over. A year after a traumatic separation from her husband of over two decades, Claire returns to the question her therapist asked her, “what do you really want?” With that she embarks on a journey to find herself, be happy, and maybe fall in love again.
Brighter than Before is an-almost-love letter to Chicago, a romance, and a taste of therapy asking, “what do you really want?” Courtney Walsh successfully delivers a clean romance with a guaranteed happily ever after. The characters are endearing and lovable. However, I want to see more diversity on the page. This novel does not have any representation of people who are not upper-middle class, heterosexual, and white. These characters seem genuine, and want the best for each other. There is not a doubt in my mind that they would welcome others into their circle. Perhaps some in their circle are queer or disabled. But none of that is mentioned on the page. In the future I hope Courtney Walsh writes more diverse characters. So much of the story is about the impact of the internet and social media on life and business and the impact of community and found family; queer, disabled, and BIPOC characters would have been a seamless addition.
That being said, I do appreciate that Claire and Miles’s stories encourage readers to talk about our traumas, our hurt, dreams, and wants. The way in which our main characters get to know and support each other, especially the way in which revealing more of their heartache and hurt, pushes them to be more open and dream bigger is a good reminder to keep talking, sharing, and dreaming. I also appreciated the mother-daughter relationship between Claire and Minnie. It’s a sweet balance of encouragement and friendship, but still maintaining their roles.

Courtney Walsh is one of my absolute favorite authors, so I have been eagerly waiting for Brighter Than Before—and it completely lived up to my expectations. I was thrilled to receive an early audiobook copy, and I honestly didn’t want it to end.

This story was everything I love in a romance: clean, heartfelt, sweet, emotional, and full of chemistry. It made me laugh out loud multiple times, but it also delivered all the feelings in the best way. The characters were lovable, the romance was beautifully written, and the narration made the story even more immersive. Courtney Walsh has such a gift for creating comforting, hope-filled stories that stay with you long after they’re over.

An easy five-star listen for me, and one I’ll definitely be recommending.

Courtney Walsh is forever an automatic read for me, and this did not fall short. I adore her warm and comforting way of writing emotional stories, include funny moments, and makes everything feel relatable and heartfelt. This rom-com follows a 40-something year old, fresh out of divorce from a cheating husband, who decides to live out her dream of living in Chicago. The relationship struggles and dating were both cringy and (from what many of my dating-friends have said) authentic!

First off, I love that this was about a mid-40s relationship, you don’t see as many romance novels like this. Second, I don’t know how she does it, but Courtney Walsh writes in a way that has you rooting for EVERY character, not just the main ones. Well...maybe except the antagnoist. Didn’t want to root for them. Ugh!

I felt poor Clair’s (MFC) embarrasement throughout the story and my heart ached for her. And the friends she met along the way - Lennon...that story hit the heartstrings, as did Duffy’s. And Miles (MMC)...he is a standup guy and such a champion encourager...to everyone but himself.

Seriously, this story may take place in Chicago, but it has all the elements of a small town romance with that close-knit, found-family feel. I loved this one so much, and the message behind it was powerful!

This comes out on June 9th and you should add it to your TBR. It will have you in all the feels!

Such a great story
Claire has hit rock bottom and after a bad divorce her need to start over becomes a must.
She loves lists and sets about writing everything she wants to experience no matter how hard or scary it is.
Moving to Chicago is one of her dreams and she finds herself in a different state alone but happy.
Meeting her neighbour Miles opens many doors to the new Claire and he happily helps her as she navigates dating, a new job and helping start her own business.
Pity he doesn’t want a relationship as he is perfect for Claire.
She has some pretty unusual dates but can’t stop comparing them all to Miles.
I loved all the characters and the storyline was amazing.
This was a fun, beautiful story of finding yourself, being brave, speaking out and never giving up on love.
I listened to the audiobook that was narrated by Patti Murin.
She was fantastic and I loved listening along to her narration.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | A beautiful story about healing, growth, and the courage to begin again.

This was my first experience with this author, and I’m happy to say it left me pleasantly surprised.

The story follows Claire, a woman in her forties who divorces her husband after discovering his infidelity. This betrayal leaves her deeply hurt and uncertain of herself, setting her up for a series of painful and at times publicly humiliating moments that made me really feel for her.
After reaching one of the lowest points in her life, Claire makes the brave choice to start over in a city she’s always longed to live in. As she rebuilds her life, she forms new friendships and learns to navigate the modern dating world—with guidance from her charming and handsome neighbor, Miles. This results in plenty or relatable, laugh out loud moments that made this such an enjoyable read.

While there is a touch of romance woven into the story, it’s not the primary focus. At its core, this is a story about rediscovering yourself and pursuing your dreams, even when you’re not quite sure what those dreams are yet. It’s about friendship, found family, and the reminder that it’s never too late to change your life. Sometimes, all it takes is the support of the people closest to you to give you that small push toward true happiness.

5 Loved This Starting Over Story Stars

Narrated by Patti Murin

Courtney Walsh, where have you been all my life? I absolutely loved listening to this story. It’s categorized as romance/women’s fiction, and I found it to be a strong character-driven story. The author really created characters that came to life for me as I listened, and I rooted for them to find happiness. I will definitely be reading her backlist now.

Our main character is Claire, and she’s spent quite a few years married and raising her daughter in Colorado. Now her daughter is studying abroad, and she has discovered that her husband is a snake. She’s still reeling from the dramatic loss of her marriage and her very sense of self. Her therapist hasn’t helped, and she’s stuck in a spiral. After a public humiliation, she’s had enough.

She decides to head to Chicago for a fresh start; she’s always wanted to live there. Of course, her ex-husband tries to talk her out of it and tells her she will fail. She lands in a cute apartment complex and soon makes a few new friends. She starts a list to reclaim her life. This list includes things like trying new foods (her husband was crazy picky), eating out by herself, getting a dog, and figuring out what she wants to do with the rest of her life. Along the way, she keeps baking because that has always soothed her.

Her daughter even sets her up on a dating app. Let’s just say that there are some hilarious moments here with dating, even with the mantra of no boring dates. I laughed out loud a few times!

She has also made a friend, Miles, who lives in the apartment complex. The two of them hit it off, but know they could never date, as Miles doesn’t want commitments after heartbreak in his past. And Claire isn’t interested in casual.

I loved the relationship that Claire has with her young adult daughter, Minnie. They talk and text all the time and are very supportive of each other.

When Claire happens upon a space that would be perfect for a bakery, her mind starts spinning with ideas. Does she dare to dream? Or is her ex-husband right, thinking that she can’t succeed at anything on her own?

I enjoyed the narration of this one and thought the text messages between mother and daughter were done especially well.

I enthusiastically recommend this heartwarming tale! I’m ready for a sequel.

This was a cute romance about not only starting over after a bad breakup/divorce but it was also about Claire learning to trust herself and finally do things she wants to do.

While Claire was opening up and doing things she has never done before she makes so many unique friends and learns that she deserves to be happy and successful in her life. I definitely would recommend this book I loved it. It was very lighthearted and interesting.

After a painfully public discovery shatters her marriage, along with her picture-perfect, country club life, Claire finds herself suddenly single in her forties and faced with a blank page for a future. On that page she writes a simple list that reads like equal parts dare and daydream--Move to a new city. Make a real friend. Get a job I love--and she vows to accomplish every single one.

Sunshine in a book, that's what this was. It wasn't devoid of heartache, but it brought out the message of hope and bright new beginnings. Claire had her share of mishaps as she began afresh in Chicago but she bounced back.

I loved the relationships she formed along the way. From feisty Lennon to charming Miles and even quirky Duffy, everyone brought a little more light to her fish-out-of-water life.

I loved the audio. Definitely recommend. Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ALC. It's out on 9th June!

I absolutely loved this beautiful, funny, heartfelt, sweet & steamy romance! Claire and Miles' moving, 'second chance at love' story was so compelling that I couldn't stop listening, needing more as I devoured every moment! Claire struggled with her ex husband's betrayal after over twenty years together. She had given up all her dreams for him and finally felt strong enough to take back her life. So she makes a list and starts off by moving across the country to Chicago, where she always wanted to live. That was hard enough, now she just needed to find a job, friends, and start checking off all the other aspirations on her list. She meets the quirkiest neighbors, including her hot landlord, Miles, across the courtyard. Miles is completely enamoured by Claire's courage, and sunny nature. They begin an unconventional friendship, and Miles offers to help her complete her list. As they spend more time together, their own attraction grows more heated. But Miles is also divorced, and not looking for commitment, so he offers to help Claire find dates, and she reluctantly accepts. As Claire finds friends, goes out on dates, and begins a new business venture, will she and Miles be able to stay friends, or will they lose the one person who really gets them, and owns their heart? I loved this story so much! It was so funny, heartfelt, and romantic. I especially loved Claire and Miles together! They completely charmed me and captured my heart from their struggle to build a new life and community of found family, while learning to trust, and love again. They helped each other heal, grow stronger, find peace, and learn to give themselves fully to love. I was so captivated by this beautiful story with it's wonderful and quirky characters, awesome storyline, and superb writing. It was made even more delightful with Patti Murin's spectacular performance! She easily brings the characters to life, capturing the essence of Claire’s vibrant personality and Miles' more composed, thoughtful nature. Her voice is deceptively bright with her perfect comedic timing, while she draws you in, and makes you feel all the extreme emotions the characters felt. I was completely captivated by her beautiful performance!

Grab a slice of rhubarb pie and come have a seat on the porch; we're about to talk about Brighter Than Before.

Claire has built her entire adult life around a man who has been cheating on her. Upon discovering this adultery, she decides that it is high time to discover herself. But how?

Walk alongside Claire as she figures out what it is she wants and how to pursue her dreams.

Brighter Than Before is delightful. A story that begins with such a painful premise ends up filled to the brim with hope. It is easily as refreshing as a glass of lemonade.

I felt so much while listening to this book. Embarrassed, sad, worried, angry, and amused. Like most rom-coms, the 'who-she-will-end-up-with' aspect is pretty predictable, but the 'how' is pretty unique! I was surprised at several points throughout this story. I also really enjoyed how much of the story was not about romance. Claire truly spends time getting to know herself and finding friendships before relationships enter the chat.

The relationship with Claire's adult daughter, Minnie, is a particularly well-crafted aspect of the story. She is abroad at college but she is present in the story through many phone and text conversations with her mother. This relationship being kept in such an intimate tone really makes Claire feel like a real person.

The MMC, Miles, is a deeply likeable guy. He and Claire start off on the wrong foot—a bit of a miscommunication trope moment—but the payoff is excellent, and the trope did not bother me (in most cases it drives me crazy).

Patti Murin did a phenomenal job narrating. Her range makes for a very immersive experience. I typically prefer audiobooks with more than one narrator, but she did so well that I did not miss the addition of a male voice actor.

If you liked A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham, you'll love this book.

Thank you NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for gifting me an ALC of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions (and laugh-out-loud moments) are my own.

Firstly, thank you to NetGalley and the Author for allowing me to review this ARL 💜
This was a warmhearted listen. FMC was incredibly relatable, and the themes of second chances, trying new things and chasing your dreams were all so motivating. I loved the narrator for this, her voice was a perfect fit for all characters! I also loved that the author went into the struggles and challenges of starting over as an adult (new career, new place to live, making new friends!). This story was the perfect romance, featuring a truly GREEN FLAG love interest (after a few not so green flags). Absolutely worth the listen, add this to your TBR!

I really enjoyed this book. Claire’s journey was such a beautiful reminder that even when life completely falls apart, there can still be so much hope and possibility waiting on the other side.

After her life is suddenly blown apart and shaken to its core, Claire moves to Chicago to pursue a life she had never quite been brave enough to chase before. Watching her slowly challenge herself to try new things, rediscover who she is, and open herself up to unexpected opportunities was incredibly uplifting and relatable.

One line especially stayed with me—when Claire says she’s taking herself on a date - "I hope I like her." It was such a sweet, vulnerable, and genuine moment. It perfectly captured the heart of the story: how easy it is to lose ourselves during different seasons of life, and how powerful it can be to reconnect with who we truly are.

I also loved the emotional depth woven throughout the romance and personal growth. The story beautifully explores healing, courage, and allowing yourself to want more out of life instead of settling for what feels safe or familiar.

Overall, this was heartfelt, hopeful, and inspiring. I absolutely recommend it.

I am grateful to have received an advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Brighter Than Before is about a recently divorced woman, angry and empty, who moves to a new city to live out the dreams she had to sideline during her marriage. She learns what she really wants out of life and struggles to make that happen... and finds out just how full life can be in the process.

I love Courtney Walsh books and was delighted to get an ARC of this book. This is my very favorite book that she has written. I loved the themes of Found Family, Friends to Lovers, and Finding Yourself. This is a beautiful masterpiece of a book. It had moments where I was laughing aloud, moments that brought tears to my eyes and romantic moments that had me kicking my feet.

Claire is a very relatable, very funny FMC/narrator. I love her. She is in her 40s and found out that her wealthy husband has cheated on her (not a spoiler, this is told right up front in the story), and she's not standing for that. She decides to strike out on her own and find out what SHE wants from life, and then accomplishing her goals, one by one. She fumbles a lot, which makes her so relatable and her escapades are just hilarious. I never wanted this book to end.

Claire finds new friends along the bumpy road that becomes her story and these people are pivotal in helping her accomplish her dreams. Among the most vital is MMC, Miles. We don't know what to make of him, but come to love him by the end of the book. There are other fun side characters, including a spunky old lady YouTuber, a Realtor who can't help but speak her mind and a slew of mismatched dating app hopefuls that are all very colorful and extremely funny.

Patti Murin was the narrator of this book and is fast becoming one of my favorite narrators. She was a perfect voice for Claire, and handled all of the many characters expertly. I highly recommend listening to this book!

Review of Brighter than Before
*A feel-good novel about finding yourself and falling in love again*
by Courtney Walsh
Narrated by Patti Murin
5⭐️

I loved both the story and the narration. Claire is in her forties, recently divorced, and trying to rediscover herself. She moves to Chicago hoping for a fresh start and opens herself up to new experiences and opportunities.

Her daughter sets her up on a dating app, and while there are some wildly awful dates, there are also some truly wonderful friendships that come into her life along the way.

This was a clean, feel-good story with plenty of heart and a happy ending. I loved it.

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction.

Thank you so, so much for an ALC of this book. I am so grateful. I’m happy I discovered a new amazing author.
This book was BRIGHTER than I expected. 5 ⭐️ and pure perfection from the beginning to the end.
There is something so refreshing about characters in their 40’s navigating their life. We don’t often see them. Claire is a newly divorced woman with a blank canvas. She’s painting her new life trying to discover who she really is besides a mother. She is funny, driven, smart, and has a heart of gold. She’s also acting silly and that made me love her more. Is she going to find what she really wants in Chicago? You will laugh out loud and probably remember about your own cringe dating experiences.

holy macaroni this book was good 👍🏻 and i was sucked in from the very first “no,yeah”

a 40 year old woman ((claire)) going through an awful divorce moves to new city to heal, find herself and start over.

i feel so often in romances like this, we often jump from heartbreak to falling in love and we miss that middle part when the main character heals for the sake of getting to the “romance” bits.

this book does an amazing job of honoring the journey of the messy middle bits. you get to see claire through her journey all the way from *gasp* trying new food to betting on herself and opening a bakery. in the middle, there’s bad first dates, new friendship and found family, exploring and new city and discovering who she is and what she really wants, and best of all banter and yearning for miles 😍

i feel like the narrator did a FANTASTIC job

no spice. all swoon.
courtney walsh never misses.

Claire- mid 40s, mother of an adult, recent divorcee, public divorce, looking to create a new life in a new city.
Miles- neighbor, divorced, father of 2 adults, landscape artist.

Claire makes a list to create her new life including asking new friends, trying new foods, talking to strangers, joining a dating app. Little does she know starting a business will make its way onto that list as well, not falling in love with her sexy neighbor.

Miles is her gorgeous new neighbor who appears to be a womanizer with a new woman leaking his apartment every night. But looks are deceiving here as he conspires with Clair’s daughter to get Claire to date again. This new found friendship blossoms through the book along with some slow burn and yearning.

This book was so incredibly relatable for anyone who has ever had a dream, for anyone who’s ever lived through a breakup! Claire is funny, witty and charming and being in her 40s makes her a perfect FMC, makes her feel like she is your best friend! Miles is super swoony, sweep and oversteps any and all boundaries to make a friend happy and live her best life.

The self discovery, the character growth, the yearning are all impeccable!! Dare I say this on one of the best books I’ve read this year?!?

I received both an advance copy and advance listening copy of Brighter Than Before from NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction. This is my honest review.

I loved this book!

Claire and Miles were funny, warm, and full of great banter. Miles completely won me over 😄 Miles especially completely won me over. He’s funny, kind, and just such a lovable MMC.

I also loved the friends-to-lovers dynamic, the found family, and the reminder of what can happen when you have a strong, supportive community around you.

This story also gives space for Claire’s relationship with herself and her own growth, which I really appreciated.

While this isn’t a spicy romance, the tension between them was absolutely there. So good!!

I also have to mention how incredible the audiobook performance was. The narration added so much personality and emotion to the story and made an already great book even better.

This book stole my heart! 🥹 Lighthearted yet emotionally moving, it’s the perfect summer read about second chances!

The Story:
After a public and humiliating breakdown of her marriage, 40-something Claire needs a fresh start. She moves to a new city to finally chase her own dreams. As she begins to surround herself with supportive new friends, they encourage her to embark on a new venture and pursue her passion of opening a bakery. Her charming neighbor, Miles, enthusiastically steps in to help pave the path and encourage her dream.

What I loved:
•Midlife Awakening: Claire’s journey of building her self confidence and overcoming fear was inspiring and I really enjoyed a main character in her 40s.
•Sweetest Slow Burn: The friends-to-maybe-more dynamic and the way it slowly builds a strong foundation for a relationship was beautifully crafted.
•Warmth and Wit: The move from heartbreak to emotional fulfillment, achieved along side witty, playful interactions just warmed my heart.
•Invisible Narration: When I become engrossed in a story and completely forget that I’m listening to an audiobook, that, is an outstanding narration.

With a perfect mix of cozy neighborhoods, amazing found family and a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to start over, this is the summer read we all need!

I enjoyed Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh so much!

It's the story of a woman named Claire who uses her recent divorce as inspiration to change her life. She makes a list of things she wants to accomplish and takes a big leaping by moving to the city of Chicago, Illinois. After all, she's always wanted to live somewhere new.

With the help of her adult daughter and a new friend Miles who lives in the apartment across the courtyard, she starts taking risks and putting herself out there. This story was so fun and the author perfectly captured the awkwardness of trying new things and meeting new people. I loved Claire's positive attitude and how she took everything in stride. Even when she had a disaster (like rude first dates or recipe mix ups) she still managed to keep her cool.

I would recommend this book if you enjoy women's fiction with humor and heart. This story features a slow burn romance that I found completely adorable. I was rooting for Claire to find love every step of the way, so the ending was very satisfying.

I loved listening to this story on the audiobook, the narrator was so wonderful and brought this beautiful story to life, simply fantastic!
I loved, loved this story, Courtney Walsh has done it again, a story that I didn’t want to put down. It is beautiful, sweet, heartwarming, really all the good feels. Claire finds her husband cheating on her, it is difficult to overcome. But with journaling she creates a list of what she really wants and who she really is. The path, the real friends she makes along the way are so wonderful and real feeling. The bad dates, hilarious! Miles is absolutely the sweetest, I think he is my new favorite book boyfriend. He is kind, caring and very supportive and there for her when she needs without asking. Their daughters are delightful, there is so much to love about this book, you will want it on your list to be read!

Brighter than Before is a beautifully written story about second chances. Our main character Claire, is a plucky and delightful middle aged mother who finds herself starting over and making a new life for herself. The characters in this book are quirky and wonderful. The dialogue is charming. The romance is there but doesn't take center stage which I loved. More than anything, this is a feel good story about believing in yourself and taking chances when that may be the last thing you think you are capable of doing. I adored this story and will definitely be recommending to my patrons. Give this a try if you love characters who will make you root for them from page one!

Thank you Netgalley and Thomas Nelson fiction for this arc in exchange for my review! This book comes out June 8, 2026!

I truly LOVED Brighter than Before! The narration was so well done, and I would definitely reread this book!

This story is full of heart, healing, deep friendship, humor, challenges and grieving a life you through you'd have.

46-year-old Claire finds herself divorced after 20 years of marriage and her life looks nothing like she imagined. She decided to step out in faith and move to Chicago for a fresh start. Claire starts to put herself out there, make friends, find a new passion in life and starts going on dates (that are laugh out loud funny). These characters captured my heart, and I was rooting for Claire from the beginning!

Claire was such a powerful and authentic main character. The banter she had (through texting) with her daughter reminded me of Gilmore Girls. I loved their relationship. I can't forget to mention our male main character Miles, what a sweet human and I loved their meet cute and seeing their friendship unfold too.

I absolutely adored Brighter Than Before. It is a beautiful story about Claire, a woman who is forced to start over in her forties after a painful betrayal turns her life upside down and leaves her feeling lost and without purpose. After reaching rock bottom, Claire is able to build a better and brighter life for herself through bravery, self-discovery, new friendships, and an unexpected romance.

This book is full of so many genuine and touching emotions, along with so many relatable lessons. It felt like the perfect romcom, full of hope, heart, humor, inspiration, and depth. This was my first Courtney Walsh book, and I am so impressed by her warm and authentic writing. Her portrayal of true friendships, found family, romance, and personal growth was perfection.

Also, I absolutely loved the FMC, Claire. Her story was uniquely her own, but I found it to be so relatable in so many different ways. I was rooting for her the whole way through. I also was such a huge fan of the MMC. He was so charming, funny, and uplifting. Book boyfriend material, for sure. The romance between Claire and the MMC felt so natural and perfectly paced, and I was giddy about their relationship.

Brighter Than Before left me feeling happy and genuinely hopeful. An easy 5 ⭐️s. I am so excited to read more books by this author.

Brighter than Before is my first book by Courtney Walsh, and it definitely won’t be my last. Her writing is warm and funny in a way that just pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading. I was hooked pretty quickly. I especially loved that the main characters are in their 40s. That is different from most book I read and was a fun change. Claire was such a great character, and even though I haven’t personally been through some of the traumatic things she has, I still found her incredibly relatable and inspiring. I loved that she didn’t let her past completely define her and was willing to put herself out there again. The relationship between Claire and Miles was one of my favorite parts. It’s a slow, natural progression from friendship to something more, which is exactly my kind of romance. It felt very real, especially as both of them were working through their own past issues. This is one of those stories that gently reminds you it’s never too late to start over, and that your past doesn’t get to decide your future. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator kept me hooked.

I really enjoyed this book! A middle aged woman, who spent her married life doing for others made a painful discovery when she was in the ladies' room at a charity event that she'd organized. The wife is always the last to know and she was humiliated.

She decides to move to Chicago from Colorado. She'd always planned to move to Chicago when she'd been in college, but her boyfriend, who became her husband, wanted to work in his family's PR business. She'd often help him with ideas for his advertising campaigns. Now she was husbandless, jobless, and no resume to speak of. So, in her 40's, her daughter abroad for school, she's on her own, learning to discover herself again and to find a way forward. It's not a smooth pathway and she trips along the way. As we all do.

But I love her personality, her resilience, and how she figures out her dreams and with a little help, works hard to attain them. She builds true friendships, along with a good idea of what she likes and what isn't for her.

Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me early versions of the e-book and the audio book. The narrator was wonderful.

Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Uplit for my copy of Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh.

This is hands down my favorite book from this author and I’m so excited for it to be out in the world!!

Admiteedly, I originally picked it up for the stunning cover — so colorful! So Chicago!! I’m happy to report that the inside absolutely lives up to it. This book is bright and full of hope — I seriously don’t know how you could finish it and NOT feel a little bit happier and lighter.

There’s a cast of quirky characters, lots of fun hijinks, and plenty of Chicago charm. What really makes the book for me is the emotional journey — both main characters have been THROUGH IT and are at different pints in their healing journeys. Watching them support each other to grow and become better people is my favorite mini trope in romance!

🎧: The audiobook is narrated by Patti Murin and she is SO fantastic y’all. Her cheerful delivery fits the story perfectly and I was completely enraptured the entire time!!

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh (Audiobook)

I absolutely loved this one. Claire Karadec is in her mid-forties, freshly divorced, and starting completely over in Chicago, and from the very first chapter I was fully invested in her story. There is something so refreshing about a romance centered on a woman in this season of life, navigating who she is outside of the roles she has held for decades. I found myself rooting for her at every turn.

The slow build between Claire and Miles is handled beautifully. Their friendship develops naturally before anything romantic takes root, and it made every moment between them feel genuinely earned. The supporting characters add real warmth, and the found family thread running through the story gave it so much heart.

The audiobook format was a wonderful way to experience this one. The narrator brought Claire’s voice to life with such warmth and humor that I did not want it to end.

Five stars and a wholehearted recommendation for anyone who loves a sweet, uplifting story about second chances and choosing yourself. This was my first Courtney Walsh and I am so excited to have discovered her.

Oh man, this book!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I absolutely loved Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh. Clare felt like such a realistic and relatable character from the very beginning. Her insecurities and everything she goes through early on genuinely hit hard, and I really felt for her throughout the story.

Watching her find the courage to rebuild her life and move to a completely new city was inspiring. I loved seeing her create a whole new world for herself in Chicago — honestly, this book made me want to visit the city so badly!

And Miles… wow. New book boyfriend unlocked. He was thoughtful, supportive, sweet, and just genuinely one of the best love interests I’ve read in a while.

This book made me laugh, cry, and cheer Clare on every step of the way. Such a heartfelt, uplifting, and fun read that completely captured me from start to finish.

A Windy City Romance 💕 Grab a sweet treat and the tissues, you'll want both ❤️‍🩹😭

Claire Karadec is starting over- but not because she wants to. Her ex-husband is a cad and she's finally washing her hands of him, moving to a city she actually wants to live in and creating the adventurous life she's longed for. But who is she now that her daughter is grown and gone and her ex is happily moving on? If she doesn't like who she sees in the mirror, can she become the woman she wants to be, living a life that brings her joy? Her dreams have been pushed down and ignored for so long, even if she can rediscover them, what are the odds she would ever succeed in reaching for one?

Readers are blessed to ride shotgun alongside Claire as she experiences a beautiful roller coaster of ups and downs post-divorce. She absolutely makes a life for herself that is Brighter Than Before.

This book encourages readers that neither our own mistakes nor intentional acts against our very best efforts define us, but what we do with the life we find ourselves living. That second chances can be sweeter than the previous course, just like dessert. Don't skip the concluding author's note- it's very impactful.

Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas Nelson Fiction, and Courtney Walsh for the ARC and ALC of Brighter Than Before!

The audiobook was narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Patti Muran, which made the experience even better!!

This story follows Claire, a forty-something divorcee whose 23-year marriage ends after her husband cheats on her and leaves her for someone half her age. The book begins with Claire at rock bottom, unable to see any light ahead.

This was such a wonderful read. I love an empowering “starting over” redemption arc, and this one delivered beautifully. There were so many hilarious moments along the way, from terrible first dates to an embarrassing first meeting with a cute neighbor, plus a few baking mishaps.

This book felt like a breath of fresh air. I loved the older main characters, along with all the chemistry, banter, and yearning between them.

I don’t usually comment on author notes, but I absolutely loved the one included here. It was such a sweet and raw message from the author, and it made me even more grateful to have had the chance to read and support this book. I can’t wait to read more of Courtney Walsh’s work!

Where do I even begin? This book is beyond perfect. The mid-40s mom who is starting over. The genuinely kind MMC. The elderly YouTuber. The found family. The banter. It was all simply wonderful.

This book brought me everything I need in a good romcom—an adorable meet-cute, miscommunication, a slow burn, and LOL moments. I loved that the book featured a woman in her mid-40s with a grown child. I wish we had more of those out in the market.

And let's give five big stars to Patti Murin, who brilliantly narrates this book. She brings so much wonder and joy to Claire's character, and she is always spot on with her secondary character voices.

I laughed. I teared up. I loved this book so much. Bravo, Courtney Walsh!

I'm not a romance reader in general, I tell myself, then I read books like this because people recommend them. This is my favorite book I've read in a while. It was sweet and honest and forgiving-- especially about forgiving yourself for not feeling like you're enough.
Claire is fantastic and I knew I'd love her from the original description. She's 46, an unusual age for a romance protagonist, and she feels broken, but she makes a list of what SHE really wants to do, for once, and starts crossing off items.
There are some misunderstandings, but nothing unrealistic and it wasn't overdone. Miles was so perfect for her, and they were so perfect to help each other start healing.
Thanks to NetGalley I got to listen to this audiobook, and the narration was so engaging I had a hard time stopping when I needed to.

This book Completely. Stole. My. Heart. ❤️🥹🫠
It made me emotional so many times, and more than once I found myself tearing up because of how real, hopeful, and deeply human this story felt.

I absolutely loved Claire. After everything she’s been through, watching her slowly take her life back into her own hands was honestly inspiring. She starts over from scratch, sets brave and ambitious goals for herself, and somehow manages to achieve them through her own strength and determination. But what made her journey even more beautiful was seeing her find genuine friendships, people who truly cared for her, and eventually a love that felt safe, sincere, and real.

And Miles… oh my gosh, Miles. He is truly everything you could want in a man. Kind, generous, comforting, present… the type of person who shows up for you and cheers for you like he already knows you’re going to succeed. And sooo funny!! The type of person who can make you smile even in the middle of heartbreak or chaos. I adored the way he always tried to lighten difficult moments with humor, but underneath that, there’s also so much vulnerability in him. His journey of learning to trust again and letting Claire into his heart was one of the most beautiful parts of the book for me. The love he gives her feels so honest and pure, as if it had always been there in his heart, just waiting to be given to someone who truly deserved it.

This story was comforting, emotional, hopeful, romantic, and healing all at once. One of those books that quietly wraps itself around your heart and stays there long after the final page. Truly beautiful… genuinely unforgettable. ❤️

A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to listen to this wonderful gem of a book in advance. But more than anything, thank you to Courtney Walsh from the bottom of my heart for the beautiful note at the end of the book. Hearing about your story, your family, the difficult moments you’ve lived through, and the way you thanked us readers simply for reading your books genuinely moved me. It made me feel seen, appreciated, loved, and respected not only as a booklover, but also as a person. And that feeling is rare and precious. Thank you, truly. ❤️

Thank you Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ALC of Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh

🗓 June 9, 2026

~~

"That's how I feel now... a little unsafe, a little uncertain... trying to figure out how not to fall. My heart is at risk here, but the logical part of me seems to be out of the office."

~~

This book was so sweet and so funny! I smiled and laughed so much. There were fun moments, lots of mishaps, and a slow burn romance.

I really enjoyed the characters - Claire and her daughter Minnie, Miles and his family, and all of the new friends that Claire makes in Chicago. She really found herself AND a wonderful family!

I enjoyed all of the dating app mishaps. Claire went on some wild dates! 😂

Brighter Than Before will be released June 9th! It is one of the cutest books ever and the audiobook is narrated by Patti freaking Murin!!

Brighter Than Before was such a fun, uplifting, and genuinely comforting audiobook experience. This was my first Courtney Walsh book, and it definitely will not be my last.

Claire, the main character, immediately felt relatable with her fresh start journey to Chicago, but what truly made this story stand out for me was how funny and human she was throughout the book. She is so clumsy, awkward, and unintentionally hilarious that I genuinely found myself laughing out loud multiple times while listening. Honestly, she reminded me so much of Monica from “Friends” with her chaotic energy, awkward moments, and lovable personality.

The narrator did such a fantastic job bringing Claire’s personality to life and made this audiobook incredibly easy to binge-listen to. The humor landed so well in audio format, but the story also had a lot of heart underneath all the funny moments.

What I appreciated most was how positive and hopeful this book felt overall. Beneath the humor and awkward situations, there’s a really heartfelt story about starting over, embracing imperfections, and finding confidence in yourself again.

Overall, this was a warm, funny, emotionally uplifting audiobook with a lovable main character, fantastic narration, and a story that honestly just made me happy while listening.

Claire has found herself recently divorced and finds that as she hits rock bottom, it's time for her to consider what she really wants in her life. It's time for a reset, and she decides that it's time to figure that out. She decides to change her life, in a big way, and take the plunge to move to Chicago. It's a place that she's always dreamed of living, even though she doesn't know anyone there.

As Claire settles into a new city, she starts a list of things she'd like to try and ways that she wants to stretch her wings and find out what she wants in her life. No longer living in her husband's shadow, she is trying new foods, going places on her own, and - with the strong nudging of her adult daughter - trying dating again through a singles app.

She meets new people, has some horrific first date stories, and begins to meet people that she can see staying in her life for a very long time to come. Friendships, relationships and some of her hopes for a new career all start to look like possibilities and not just dreams.

I thought this was such a positive and uplifting story! This audiobook was great and the voices of the characters really came to life under the skilled talents of the narrator. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to read and listen to more of Courtney Walsh's books in the future. My thanks to the publisher, author and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy.

This was so cute!!!!

I went into Brighter Than Before completely blind and not really knowing what to expect. This book was so many emotions wrapped up into one sweet little rom-com.

Claire is a newly divorced, middle aged mom who is trying to navigate life after her husband of over 20 years has left her for his very young mistress. Now living the single life in the Windy City, Claire is in search of self discovery. She meets her cute neighbor, Miles who is encouraging Claire to get out there and date in exchange for her delicious baked goods.

This book was silly, at moments laugh-out-loud hilarious, emotional and so heartfelt. Claire is an FMC that is impossible not to fall in love with. I love how the author was able to let the reader know how crappy her ex-husband is without making it Claire’s entire personality. Miles was perfection! He starts out an encouraging friend, and their friendship to lovers relationship is a steady build over the course of the story. I loved their easy chemistry, even as friends they were such a fun duo to follow along to.

I received an ARC and ALC from the publishers and I am so glad I had the option to tandem read. Patti Murin’s narration added so much value to this story and really brought Claire’s character to life. I enjoyed every moment of this experience and can’t wait to recommend it to everyone this summer. Keep an eye out for Brighter than Before when it releases on June 9th!

This book was so fun but also so enlightening about how hard it can be to start your life over! I throughly enjoyed following Claire as she navigated finding who she was after her husband betrayed her. This book shows you that even though you’ve been through terrible things there are still good things to be found. I would definitely recommend this book to EVERYONE! 🫶🏼🩷

This was such a sweet romance. I absolutely loved Claire and Miles’ dynamic! Claire, after publicly discovering her husband’s affair, decides that she needs to get a fresh start and finally do the things that she was too afraid to do alone. She moves to Chicago, a place she’s always wanted to live and makes herself a list of all the things she wants to try. As someone from the suburbs of Chicago I loved the setting! Walking along Lake Michigan, eating deep dish pizza and Michigan Avenue are a classic Chicago experience. All of the side characters were memorable without stealing too much of the spotlight and made the story come to life even more. Claire’s internal struggles were so relatable: doubting herself, lacking confidence, overthinking, and trying to live up to others' opinions. It was a joy to see her confidence grow as she (with Miles and Minnie’s encouragement) began to follow her dreams and put in the work to make it a reality.

Patti Murin did a wonderful job narrating this book! She made me want to read the book a second time just so I could hear her reading it again!

Thanks to NetGalley, Courtney Walsh, and Thomas Nelson for this ALC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was such a comforting and genuinely inspiring read! The romance had a soft, tender quality that fit the story perfectly, and I quickly grew attached to the entire cast. The characters felt authentic and easy to connect with, which made Claire’s journey especially rewarding to follow. Her personal growth and character development were some of my favorite aspects of the story, and I loved seeing her slowly grow into a more confident version of herself.

Watching her step outside of her comfort zone, open herself up to new possibilities, and begin rebuilding her life was both uplifting and heartwarming. The story carried such a hopeful atmosphere throughout, and the themes of self-discovery, second chances, friendship, and chasing the life you truly want gave it so much warmth and charm.

The audiobook format also added so much to the experience, and Patti Murin’s narration helped me immediately sink into the story. By the end, I felt so optimistic and genuinely happy seeing where Claire’s journey was leading her. This one left me feeling encouraged and really glad that I picked it up!

Brighter than Before is such a beautiful and unique story that felt incredibly refreshing compared to most romance novels. Instead of focusing on characters in their twenties, this story follows Claire Karadec, a woman in her forties trying to rediscover herself after finding out her husband, who was never truly supportive of her dreams has cheated on her. Watching Claire rebuild her life felt emotional, inspiring, and so genuine.

I loved the way the story centered around Claire finally asking herself what she wants out of life. Her bucket list and move to a new city gave the story such a hopeful feeling, and seeing her slowly come into her own was one of the best parts of the book. The romance with Miles was sweet, but what really stood out was Claire’s personal journey and growth.

Miles was also such a wonderful MMC. He brought so much kindness, patience, and encouragement to the story, especially after everything Claire had been through. I loved that he supported her as she figured herself out instead of trying to change or “fix” her. Their relationship felt mature, comforting, and full of genuine connection, which made the romance even more meaningful.

The audiobook narration by Patti Murin was absolutely wonderful. She brought so much warmth, emotion, and personality to Claire’s story, making it even easier to connect with everything she was going through.

Overall, Brighter than Before is a heartfelt, uplifting story about second chances, self-discovery, and learning that life can still surprise you in the best ways.

Are you a fan of rom-com movies? If the answer is yes, I’m sure you’ll love this one!!

Brighter than Before is such a sweet, well-written story about Claire, a woman in her mid-forties who finds herself divorced. Deciding now’s the time to try some new things, she moves from Denver to Chicago (yay!) and begins the process of starting anew.

I absolutely loved all the characters in this story, and each page had me eager to learn what would happen to Claire next. She is an extremely like-able character, very easy to root for!

You’re never too old to try new things! Just make a list, get out there, and cross them off! :)

This is the perfect summer read if you’re looking for an enjoyable contemporary romance. It’s also very clean, so if your mother doesn’t like “sexy scenes” (like mine), this is one you can recommend to her as well!

This was beautiful. My parents went through a divorce a few years ago, under different circumstances, but I could see my mom in some of Claire’s feelings. I loved watching her discover herself. Find love again. Find a job that wasn’t just being a wife and a mom. This was such a beautiful journey to go on. I loved all the Chicago references and the fun mentions of Comic-Con and Disney. Also, I really need Claire to bake for me. She made me so hungry. Especially with her trying new foods!

This was such a sweet journey of friendship, love, and learning who you are again.

Brighter than before was exactly the audiobook that I needed right now. A book that gave me hope, encouragement, and strength. I loved all of the characters, but Miles especially. What a growth in him! Claire was the perfect heroine in that she hit rock bottom and had to pick herself back up by her bootstraps, and so she did. I am still thinking of those special moments that Claire had that gave me all the feels, and oh, how I wished I were her at times. Ultimately, this was the feel-good novel that I desperately needed and loved!

Expected publication June 8, 2026

Courtney Walsh hits a home run with this charming, humorous, inspiring, and healing romance. I loved how the author helped Miles and Claire get to know each other and the Chicago area by using the dating app Claire's daughter chose. I found it endearing how their relationship and love for one another developed naturally as they considered future options, both personally and professionally. +

I adored Claire and Miles' relationship, which was a delight to read about; it made me smile as they walked carefully along this new path of friendship. This is a must-read and would make an excellent choice for your next book group. It's a story that will linger with you long after you finish the book.

I had the opportunity to listen to the audiobook, which enhanced my reading experience and brought characters and their situations to life.+

I have read a couple books by Walsh and have loved every single more of them so I was so excited to receive an ARC for this well. It did not disappoint. I received an audio version and the narrator was wonderful.

In the story we follow our FMC as she rebuilds her life and finds herself again about divorce. She is also a mom of a college aged kid. Her daughter and the FMC set her up on dates to help her. Even though I knew where the dates were gonna go it was still enjoyable and at times funny to read. Both our FMC and our MMC are like able from the start and I was rooting for them from the beginning.

If you are looking for a clean sweet easy to read story this book is for you. I highly recommend.

This book really made me think about my life and what I want out of it. I loved how this story touch my heart. I loved the characters and the support group the main character finds for herself. Their were a lot of embarrassing moments for the main character that made me cringe, but I loved how those moments contributed to the over all theme of second chances. The romance was sweet and gradual. I loved how it wasn't the main focus of the story. The narrator did a fabulous job and this was definitely one I wanted to find time to listen to. This was overall a beautiful story that left me better off than I was before I started it!

Brighter than before follows the story of Claire, a recently divorced woman in her mid 40's who has spent the past 20+ years taking care of her husband and daughter in Colorado. After her husband's infidelity and divorce filing; Claire moves to Chicago to start fresh. Claire moves into her new apartment and follows a checklist of items she wishes to accomplish now that she is on her own, such as trying new cuisine, eating alone at a restaurant, make new friends, etc. In her apartment complex, she meets her new neighbors, which includes Miles, the building owner, who is very eager to help her start fresh in Chicago.

Brighter than Before is such an uplifting and positive read that shows that it's never too late to start fresh, despite the obstacles life throws your way.

Thank you so much to NetGalley & Thomas Nelson Fiction for the advanced audio copy! 🥹🤍

I loved this book a lot! The way that we get to watch Claire rebuild her life as an already established adult was beautiful. The progression from lowest low into the growth that we get to see was lovely. My heart ached for her and was also thrilled for her at the same time.

Getting to see her relationships with her neighbours, new friends and strangers grow into such amazing friendships was inspiring. I really love that this book shows you that no matter what age you are, it's never too late to start something or try something new. I can't get over how much I loved this book!

Starting over is so scary, but Claire is inspiration that you’re never too old to start over and give yourself the life you dreamed of. I love that Claire met people who want to help her flourish 🌷 Miles is the perfect book boyfriend 🥹 I literal only thing I was annoyed with was all of Claire’s assumptions about Miles before learning for herself.

I am so in love with this book. She had me at the fountain incident. This story of rebuilding and renewing hit me hard. Clair is such a wonderful character and brave. Listening to her rebuild herself from the ground up in a new city was so lovely and sucked me right in. Her dating experiences really hit home with me LOL It was so refreshing to have a character in my age range as well. Miles was such a nice man too. There were some twists that came about.... I absolutely adored this book! What a wonderful story of finding yourself after a divorce. A story of going after what you want. A story of being strong and having good friends that actually care about you. A story of starting over for YOURSELF! I absolutely loved watching Claire grow as her own person after decades of being a wife and mother. She did it with the help of new friends, her daughter and an unexpected man who would end up being her second chance at love. Entertaining. I loved everything about this story. A beautiful sweet romance.

Brighter Than Before is exactly why I keep coming back to Courtney Walsh’s books. Her stories just have this warm, refreshing feel that’s so easy to settle into, and this one was no different. The romance was sweet, genuine, and completely free of all the unnecessary drama. You really get to just enjoy watching the characters grow and connect.

I especially love how her books always deliver clean love stories without feeling forced or overly simple. There’s still so much heart, emotion, and depth woven in, and Brighter Than Before captures that perfectly. It felt uplifting, hopeful, and left me with that cozy, feel-good kind of happiness when I turned the last page.

If you’re looking for a light but meaningful read with a heartfelt romance, Courtney Walsh never misses and this one is definitely a favorite for me. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book earlier.

This was such a refreshing read after having not so many great reads this year. Claire reinventing herself after her divorce was such an interesting storyline. She was finding herself in her 40's and trying to get back out there in the dating pool. The dates she went on were so funny and realistic. I loved how she carried herself and the narrator for the audiobook was the perfect voice for her. I loved that her and Miles were friends and how they got to know each other during her journey. They were so mature and the romance between them wasn't forced. The storyline, the characters, the humor! It was all so well done and this should be on your TBR immediately.

This story completely stole my heart. Claire and Miles’s journey felt real, emotional, and deeply relatable. A beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to start over, rediscover yourself, and choose happiness again.

I loved watching Claire rebuild her life after divorce, find her confidence, and slowly open her heart to Miles. Their connection was tender, healing, and such a satisfying slow burn.

Courtney Walsh’s writing is warm, comforting, and full of heart, and the audiobook narration made the story even more immersive. Falling in love with this book twice is the best compliment I can give. I especially loved reading along while listening to the audiobook.

Set in Chicago, my birthplace and first love, the setting felt especially magical to me. I truly felt like I was walking the streets alongside Claire as she found herself again. As someone who moved to Chicago as an adult without knowing anyone, I could really relate to how overwhelming it can feel at first — while also discovering the amazing food, beautiful sights, and eventually finding a place where you belong. I could totally envision The Porch; it’s definitely somewhere I would want to visit and try Claire’s amazing baked goods!

There were moments that made me laugh so hard I cried, moments where I felt angry for Claire, and so many sweet moments that had me cheering. I truly didn’t want this story to end.

I loved this! Claire recently got a divorce and is working on finding herself, which involves a move to Chicago and a goal list of new experiences. I loved rooting for Claire and seeing her growth, and Miles was such a delight. The narrator was great too, even if her "Chicago" accent was more Minnesotan than Chicagoan. There was a great cast of side characters and I ended it feeling motivated and hopeful. Would recommend and I will check out more of Courtney Walsh's books!

Thank you to @netgalley and @thomasnelson for a free copy of this ebook and audiobook in exchange for my honest review.

Courtney Walsh’s Brighter than Before is a joyful, heartfelt story about rediscovering yourself later in life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story follows Claire Karadec, newly single in her forties and trying to figure out what comes next after a major life shake-up. When her adult daughter secretly sets up a dating profile for her, Claire is pushed into a new chapter filled with nosy neighbors, unexpected friendships, and the slow realization that starting over can be exciting instead of terrifying.

I loved how refreshing it was to read about a heroine in her forties rebuilding her life on her own terms. It felt light, funny, and hopeful, but still had emotional weight around identity, change, and learning to want more for yourself.

The audiobook made it even more charming, bringing warmth and humor to Claire’s voice and making the story feel cozy, uplifting, and easy to sink into.

A sweet, feel-good, life-after-the-plot-twist kind of book.

I absolutely adore books like this. 💖

Thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction and NetGalley for an advanced copy (ALC) 🎧 in exchange for an honest review.

This isn’t your typical romance story — it’s a story about rebuilding a relationship with the most important person in your life: yourself.

Brighter than Before beautifully explores what it means to start over when you’re in your late forties (the heroine is 46), when the life you once knew has completely fallen apart, and you’re forced to ask yourself: What do I actually want from this life now?

After a painful divorce, the heroine finds herself lost in a reality where the only roles she has known for years — wife and mother — no longer define her. And suddenly she has to face the terrifying question: Who am I now?
Armed only with grief, fear of the future, loneliness, and deep insecurity, she begins a difficult but incredibly moving journey toward rediscovering herself.

This book was such a beautiful and emotional experience, one that truly makes you reflect on life, identity, healing, and second chances.

What I loved most about the heroine was her quiet strength — the way she keeps pushing forward despite every challenge life throws at her. Watching her slowly choose herself, her happiness, and her future was incredibly inspiring.

I also adored the sense of community the author created around her. The supporting characters brought so much warmth, comfort, and love to the story.

And the romance… 💘
It’s the kind of love that doesn’t diminish you, but supports you, uplifts you, and helps you become stronger.

I wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful and deeply heartfelt story.

If I could give this book six stars, I would. I have not laughed out loud like this since I first read Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella, and that is not a comparison I make lightly.

The book opens with a scene so perfectly chaotic and funny that I was laughing so hard I nearly woke up my husband, and I knew right then I was in for something special.

Brighter Than Before is funny in the best possible way, but it also has real soul and depth underneath all the laughter. Claire's journey of rebuilding herself after her husband's betrayal is honest and relatable, and watching her tackle her list of things she wants to do with her life had me crying with laughter and genuinely moved.

The narrator, Patti Murin, was absolutely phenomenal. She did not just read the story, she became Claire completely. Her comedic timing was perfect, but she handled the emotional and serious moments with just as much skill. This is the kind of narration that makes you forget you are listening to a book.

I had never read Courtney Walsh before, and she is now on my autobuy list. I have already told my sisters they must read this the moment it is available.

If you loved Undomestic Goddess, this is your next favorite book. Do not miss it.

This was my first novel from Courtney Walsh and definitely not my last! It was hilarious, emotional, and comforting. It feels like your favorite 2000s romcom and that’s hard to create today. I loved Claire’s character development, after a failed marriage in her 40s she starts over in a new city. She encounters many weird first dates, a business, and great friends! I loved this one so much, I need to read all of Walsh’s books asap.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced listening copy, I can’t wait to hoard the rest of Courtney Walsh’s books onto my shelves 💚

This was my first book by Courtney Walsh. I loved it!

The story of Claire finding who she was outside of being a mom and wife was wonderful. After her husbands affair she ends up moving to a new city, finding her tribe and living her dreams.

This was a zero spice romance. Just some smooching and yearning looks. Courtney Walsh is definitely a new favorite! Can't wait to read more of her work.

Brighter than Before is a wonderful story about self-discovery and putting your own dreams first. When Claire's marriage ends she decides to write down her dreams and goals; making a list of what she wants most for herself. Starting over in her mid-40's is scary, but Claire shows courage, determination, and belief in making her own dreams come true. When someone says you can't make your hobby into a full time job, Claire decides to prove them wrong. Many of the characters were relatable and the focus on a mid-life love story was a welcomed change.

Patti Murin is a favorite narrator and she did an excellent job with this book. Her tone with Claire during the highs and lows was perfect and really brought the reader/listener into her story. Sit, Sip, and Stay a while with this book. I promise you won't be disappointed!

INFINITY STARS! This was my first book by Courtney Walsh and I ATE. IT. UP. There is something so refreshing about a romance with a woman in her middle age years instead of always the typical 20s girls. As a woman that has been through a divorce, this one was so healing. The way Claire rebuilds her life after a divorce she never saw coming and unexpectedly finds love through the scheming of her college age daughter and landlord, it’s just perfection. The whole storyline about the bakery, ughhhhhh my heart. Claire found everything she deserved and I just couldn’t get enough of this one. I actually jumped right into The Summer of Yes and I devoured it as well. Courtney Walsh has a new #1 fan!

A feel-good, happy ending, low angst book. Perfect for those who just need a happy pick-me-up or positive win in their corner. That does not mean there’s no depth or meaning; far from it. Claire has just been through one of the worst experiences imaginable and in one of the deepest moments of despair, she decides to fight for herself and try something new. She completely starts over and finds herself in the process. While it may not reasonable or possible for everyone to just pick up and move and start over, the story conveys the hope of believing in yourself, your gifts, and your talents. It shows what can happen when you stop listening to the negative voices and break from the things that prevent you from taking a chance. It tells a story of overcome your fears and real, scary things. There’s a feel-good touch of finding new friends who support you and stand in corner when everyone else turns away. I love the way the story shows all kinds of friends and normalizes those who don’t necessarily fit in conventional boxes. And then the part so many of us hope to see…the second chance at love and new beginnings. I enjoyed the break from reality and just appreciated reveling in the wins of a new book friend. The narrator did an excellent job of keeping the story moving along and capturing the personalities and nuances of all the characters.

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh (June 2026) [reading in May]
11h narrated by Patti Murin, 352 pages
ALC courtesy of Thomas Nelson

Genre: Humor, Women's Fiction, Contemporary Romance

Rating as a movie: PG-13 for innuendos and adult situations

My rating: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟💔🏠📦🧁💐

My thoughts: This is the fourth story I've had the pleasure of reading by Courtney Walsh, I've read the first two Holidays With Hart books and The Summer of Yes. She was already on my list of authors whose catalogs I intend to read, but now I'm even more eager to do so sooner rather than later. Brighter than Before is the best I've experienced from her, and I gave five stars to the last two of her books I've read. The story is exceptional from beginning to end, offering a delightful blend of humor, emotional depth, and inspiration without a single lull. I wanted to reread it immediately, but I decided I'd instead look forward to rereading it with my book club. It truly is an ideal story to enjoy during a summer vacation. Claire and Myles were so engaging I think it's a disservice to call it a slow burn, because I barely noticed. I would give it 7 out of 5 stars if I could.

Recommend to others: Yes! She's hilarious.

This is my first book by this author. It was fun, yet still dealt with tough life challenges in believable ways. The two MC's are both in their 40's and divorced, and dealing with the lingering self-esteem issues brought on by being cheated on by their former partners. This story took me on their journey of figuring out who they are and what they want.
I will definitely be on the lookout for more books by Courtney!

First off I just want to say thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

It was wow. Just wow!
This was a 6 star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ read for me.

I just finished the audio arc and I’m speechless, staring off into space and trying to come up with the perfect way to describe my feelings.
All I really know is I absolutely loved it.
I think it’s my new favorite contemporary romance read/listen of the year. It spoke to a place in my heart I didn’t know needed this.

I went into it expecting it to be a basic romance like usual but it was a lot more than that.

Poor Claire discovers her husband of 24 years is having an affair while in the middle of a fancy event SHE planned when his mistress shows up looking like a cheap escort.

Jump to a year later and she’s caught snooping at this years event because she wants to see how they did without her planning it for them and so she tries to hide and falls into a fountain and is once again humiliated by the people she once thought were her friends.

She gets home and decides to make a list of life goals she wants to do and at the top of the list is move to a new city and she’s always wanted to live in Chicago. So she packs up and moves to an entirely new state with no real plans other than the ones on her list lol

There is some romance but it is more about forming a friendship, helping each other heal, her discovering herself and her purpose post divorce, learning how to love herself again, finding her true family, and just believing in herself again.

Was honestly the perfect book.

No 🌶️ but all the ❤️

Comes out on June 9th and I HIGHLY recommend it.

I really, really enjoyed this book. How incredibly refreshing to have a 40-something love story that didn't feel forced, or cringe-worthy. I absolutely love books that involve "found family" and this book delivered that in a beautiful way. Claire, our FMC, now divorced from her (awful!) ex husband moves to Chicago to start over and finds her new home in a little neighborhood filled with charm, coffee walks and a swoony neighbor, Miles. Miles, also divorced, is so thoughtful and charming and this book felt like a second chance love story that acts as a warm hug. The audio was perfection. This audio book will come highly recommended by me to my fellow bookish friends!

Narration: Fantastic!

Story:
Oh, this needs to be a TV series (a movie would be too short)! It is laugh-out-loud funny, heartwarming, and one of the most charming stories I’ve ever read/listened to.

The opening scene immediately pulled me in, making me wish I could tell Claire, “No, don’t do it!” Instant case of just-one-more-chapter.

My heart hurt for Claire at the start, but it was so beautiful and uplifting to see her move forward. I love that the characters are older (40 somethings) and the message that it’s never too late.

I felt like a big theme was making choices to move forward and to build a life. While I do think every day is filled with choices and action is necessary when someone is able take it, this may be a sensitive topic if someone is currently in a position or situation beyond their control. Sometimes it is not within our ability to make a change, no matter how much we want to. That said, I think the overall message is about choosing to remain hopeful, to remain encouraged even during a hard day.

I loved Claire’s bravery and her attitude, especially when it comes to her dates—when it doesn’t work out, she still makes the most of where she is and enjoys herself! I loved that so much.

I think the cover and title of this novel captures the story really well; there’s this feeling of spring after winter, of starting to live again. Claire gains a zest for life and that energy leaps off the pages!

The ending is wonderful. Somehow it simultaneously wraps up the story while feeling like it’s just the beginning. Loved it!

Content:
Heartwarming story
Laugh-out-loud moments
Intimacy level: Kisses Only | Vague references to physical relationships (the expectations of a minor side character) | There is an incident with her robe, but nothing is explicitly described.
Language: No profanity
Brief reference to: the universe; Halloween

Falling in love with yourself is a special kind of joy, and sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before you can even begin. I wish I would have had this book to read in my 20s.

Claire's later in life journey of starting over was beautiful and inspiring, and a wonderful example of how change is not linear.

The narration was wonderful and emotional.

Every time I read a book by Courtney I think to myself “ this one can’t be as good as the last one.” But then she proves me wrong and this one is no different . I really enjoyed this one and especially as the character is closer to my age. This book is about growing from your past and sometimes the first person you have are not always the right one for you. Both the characters in the book have been victims of a cheating spouse so they understand each other on that level . He is gushy after the evens of his past relationships and rightly so but when you find the right person you just know .

Courtney Walsh’s Brighter than Before emotionally attacked me with awkward first dates, post-divorce identity crises, late-night journaling spirals, emotional support baked goods, and the deeply offensive realization that apparently it is still possible to reinvent your life in your forties instead of simply purchasing increasingly expensive candles and giving up. Thomas Nelson Fiction and Thomas Nelson Audio, thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the gifted ARC and ALC because this book crawled directly into my heart, redecorated the place, lit a cozy Chicago apartment candle, and whispered, “Maybe your life isn’t over yet, babe.”

Claire Karadec felt painfully, beautifully real from the very first chapter. This woman has spent decades building a polished country-club life around her husband’s success only for it all to implode publicly and humiliatingly in a way that would honestly send most of us directly into witness protection. And when the book opens with Claire showing up in gray sweats carrying emotional damage and junk food to an event she used to run? I knew immediately this was going to be one of those stories where the humor cuts straight through the heartbreak.

What Courtney Walsh does so brilliantly here is balance warmth and vulnerability without making Claire’s healing journey feel fake or overly inspirational. Claire doesn’t magically become fearless overnight. She’s lonely. She’s insecure. She second-guesses herself constantly. She has moments where she feels invisible after spending years being “someone’s wife” instead of her own person. And honestly? That hit hard. There’s something deeply emotional about watching a woman slowly realize she still deserves joy after spending years shrinking herself for everyone else.

So Claire does the terrifying thing. She leaves Colorado behind, moves to Chicago, starts making lists, starts trying, starts failing, starts rebuilding. And every little step forward felt oddly triumphant. Eating alone at a restaurant. Making a friend. Looking for work she actually enjoys. Learning that maybe survival and happiness are not the same thing.

And then there’s Miles.

Listen. LISTEN.

Miles is the kind of fictional man that makes you stare into space for a few business days afterward. He’s funny, calm, emotionally mature, supportive without being controlling, and somehow manages to radiate “golden retriever energy” while still being incredibly attractive. The chemistry between him and Claire is soft and natural and emotionally intimate in a way that felt refreshing. No exhausting drama. No manipulative nonsense. Just two adults carrying old wounds while slowly learning how to trust someone again.

Their relationship develops through quiet moments, conversations, kindness, late-night honesty, and the kind of emotional safety that honestly feels rarer in romance these days than dragons or billionaires. Courtney Walsh proves you do not need spice to create chemistry because these two had me giggling, kicking my feet, and aggressively rooting for them anyway.

But honestly? One of my favorite parts of this story was Minnie. Claire’s daughter brought so much humor and heart to the book, especially with the online dating chaos. The dating scenes themselves were absolute comedy gold. I swear every disastrous encounter made me simultaneously laugh and thank the heavens I’m not currently trying to survive modern dating apps because absolutely not. Hard pass. I would simply become one with my couch and never leave again.

“Beautiful things happen when you get out of your own way.”

That line perfectly captures the entire soul of this book. Underneath the humor and romance is this incredibly moving story about reclaiming yourself after heartbreak. About understanding that starting over is terrifying but staying stuck might be worse. About realizing your life does not expire at forty, fifty, or beyond just because society quietly acts like women are supposed to disappear into beige cardigans and casseroles after a certain age.

And Patti Murin absolutely NAILED this audiobook narration. She brought Claire to life with so much warmth, vulnerability, humor, awkwardness, and emotional depth that it genuinely felt like sitting across from a friend over coffee while she told you the messy details of rebuilding her life. Her comedic timing during the disastrous dating scenes was perfection, but she also handled the quieter emotional moments beautifully. The narration added so much personality and charm to an already wonderful story.

This book felt like a warm summer evening in Chicago. Like finding your confidence again one tiny brave decision at a time. Like proof that life can still surprise you long after you thought the best parts were over.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you love women’s fiction with heart, found family, second chances, emotional healing, clean romance, lovable side characters, personal growth, and strong “Nancy Meyers movie with emotional depth and better dialogue” energy, you need this book immediately. Fans of Annabel Monaghan, Katherine Center, and Sarah Adams are going to absolutely devour this one.

Now excuse me while I dramatically consider moving to Chicago, starting over, baking pastries, and waiting for a Miles to appear in my apartment hallway. Chances are low, but the delusion feels healthy.

Have you ever read a book that made you want to completely restart your life afterward? Because this one absolutely did that to me. 😂

Claire Karadec is rebuilding after a painfully public divorce — moves to Chicago, makes a list (new city, real friend, job she loves), and tries to start over in her forties. Her daughter Minnie and her off-limits neighbor Miles are both nudging her to put herself back out there, which she resists with a fair amount of doubt and second-guessing.

If you prefer closed-door, this is a good pick — sweet, clean, and low-spice without losing the romantic spark.

Claire makes some assumptions along the way that annoyed me, but the doubts and the second-guessing felt earned given what she's coming out of. The found-family and self-rediscovery beats are where the book shines. Patti Murin narrates and her warmth fits Claire's voice well. A solid recommendation for readers who want a divorcée-finds-herself story without the heat.

Claire's world is turned upside down when she discovers her husband is having an affair. When her marriage ends in divorce, she decides to uproot her life to move to a new city and rediscover who she is apart from her ex-husband. She compiles a list of things she wants to accomplish: make a new friend, eat at a restaurant in public (by herself!), get a job she actually loves.

I absolutely loved this book. Between the unexpected friendships, the hilarious (and disastrous) first dates, and especially the slow-burn romance, this was a delightful book full of redemption and hope. Though the main character and I have little in common, I still found myself relating to her as she asked herself the question, what do I really want?

Claire is a main character you root for. I found it refreshing to read a story about a middle-aged divorced woman with a grown daughter, showing it's never too late to find happiness and start over.

This is also a beautiful story of found family. The friendships Claire makes inspired me to be that kind of friend to people in my own community- someone who notices others, invites them in, and cheers them on.

Brighter than Before made me laugh out loud, and it also made me cry. I particularly loved the dynamic between Claire and Miles. Their friends-to-more relationship was well-developed, and I loved how encouraging and protective he was towards Claire.

An easy 5 star read!

Content considerations:
-No spice; a couple of kisses
-Themes of infidelity and divorce

Brighter Than Before is a heartfelt, uplifting story about starting over and rediscovering yourself after heartbreak. Claire is struggling after her husband’s affair and the collapse of her marriage, so she moves to a new city hoping for a fresh start. Along the way, she finds an incredible group of friends who help her rebuild her confidence and create a new life for herself.

While there is romance in the story, this book feels much more focused on Claire’s personal growth, healing, and the importance of friendship and community. I loved watching her start a new business and slowly open herself up to love again with a genuinely wonderful guy from her friend group.

This book was funny, comforting, low-spice, and filled with enjoyable, memorable characters.

I didn’t know how I would feel reading a romcom book about a woman closer to my mother’s age than my own… but I’m so glad I did! On top of being well written, I also smiled through the whole thing and just genuinely feel inspired. I’d recommend this to anybody who loves light hearted books but still has standards. I want to take risk and call my mom. Will definitely read more from this author in the future!

Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Fiction for the ALC of this book.

"Brighter Than Before" was an absolute delight. I adored this story about Claire, a middle‑aged mom picking up the pieces after a painful divorce and trying to rediscover who she is. Her move to Chicago and her “new life” list—try scary things, eat new foods, make new friends—was both heartfelt and hilarious.

This book is warm, funny, and wonderfully human. I found myself laughing out loud at Claire’s dating‑app disasters (anyone who’s survived a bad date will relate instantly) and cheering her on as she rebuilt her confidence. Miles was such a sweetie and watching their friendship shift into romance was the best. And Lorraine, the neighbor? Pure perfection.

Chicago shines as a setting—I could picture every neighborhood and even added a few spots to my own travel list. The audio narration brought each character to life beautifully, making the story even more immersive.

It was refreshing to read about characters closer to my own age, navigating grown children, complicated relationships, and second chances. No spice here, just a warm, uplifting, deeply charming story about starting over.

A lovely, feel‑good read.

This book was everything I wanted it to be. I really loved that the characters were older and dealing with the very real aftermath of divorce and starting over. It was so fun watching Claire try to navigate life on her own again and slowly figure out who she really was outside of the life she had always known. Her character growth throughout the book was honestly one of my favorite parts. Once she started gaining confidence in herself, it completely changed the way she looked at the world and the people around her. She had a lot of insecurities, which made total sense for everything she had been through, but I really appreciated watching her reflect on her past while still continuing to move forward toward the things she wanted for herself.

Miles was such a good balance to Claire’s character. He definitely had his own struggles and heartbreak that he kept buried pretty deep, and even though he seemed outgoing and confident on the surface, it was obvious he still had walls up. I really liked the way his story unfolded throughout the book. He was funny, sweet, a little mysterious at times, and he brought such a comforting presence to the story.

The audiobook for this was also so well done. The narrator brought so much emotion into the story right from the beginning. Claire goes through such a huge range of emotions throughout the book, and you could really feel every bit of it while listening. The heartbreak, embarrassment, hopefulness, and lighter moments all came through so naturally. I especially loved hearing the emotional progression as Claire slowly became more comfortable with herself and the life she was building.

I highly recommend this one. It was such an enjoyable read from beginning to end and exactly the kind of emotional, hopeful story I love picking up.

There was just something about Brighter than Before that completely wrapped around me like a cozy blanket. It’s one of those books that isn’t trying to be overly dramatic or flashy, but somehow ends up hitting you right in the heart anyway. Claire’s journey felt so genuine and comforting to read. Watching her rebuild herself piece by piece after her life completely unraveled was both emotional and hopeful in the best way.

I especially loved the growth of the FMC throughout the story. Her learning to trust herself again, figure out what she actually wanted, and slowly build a life that felt like hers was beautifully done. The relationships in this book also stood out to me so much, especially the dynamic between the adults and their adult children. It felt warm, realistic, messy, and loving all at once.

The narration was excellent and added so much charm and emotion to the story. It made the whole experience feel incredibly immersive and comforting.

And Miles? Absolutely adored him.

If I had one tiny critique, it’s honestly that I wanted more. Upon reflection, I think this book easily could’ve added another 100 pages just to deepen some of the relationships and moments because I wasn’t ready to leave these characters behind.

This book felt soft, healing, hopeful, and deeply human. I loved it.

This book was so well-written. It handled difficult subject matter with respect and humor.

Claire finds herself in her 40s, divorced and alone so she makes herself a list to help her move on. First thing on the list, move to a new town. She moves to Chicago and meets her neighbor, Miles.

Miles helps her with her list and they become good friends. If you love friends to lovers, strong women characters and found family, you will LOVE this one.

I connected with Claire in so many ways. I genuinely cared what happened to her along her journey.

Thank you to Net Galley for this ARC. I appreciate it!

I loved this book and will be diving into Courtney Walsh's backlist right away!

Claire & Miles. She was betrayed by her husband and she's been humiliated by the betrayal more than once. She decides to make a go of a life that is worth living and starts a list in her journal. She packs everything up and moves to Chicago and sets out to make that life.

I loved who Claire was as a person and I felt her pain every time she turned a corner and met with an unpleasant unexpected situation. Miles is infinitely likable even when he's putting out those "I don't do relationship vibes." I really liked that these characters are older and that the communication between them is clear, even when they are both little confused by their own circumstances. I absolutely loved the slow progression of their friendship to a romantic relationship.

Beyond Claire and Miles, were the neighbors, the friends, the dates, the daughters. Every character was interesting, most were inspiring, and I think all were funny (to some extent except maybe that one date...).

I was able to get the audiobook on NetGalley. The narrator is Patty Murin and I didn't actually realize that it wasn't a duet until I thought about it in the middle of the book. Her voices are so good - all very distinguishable from each other. She brought the chemistry between Claire and Miles out. She was great!

This is a "clean romance" book with only a couple kisses between the couple (not explicitly detailed).

what to expect:
*starting over
*midlife MCs
*found family
*"clean romance"
*cheating (Claire's ex spouse, description given) *Don't let this deter you!

*I received a complimentary ALC and my review is voluntary. Thank you to the author, Thomas Nelson Fiction, and NetGalley.

I absolutely adored Brighter than Before. This book felt like a warm hug, a fresh start, and a reminder that life is not over just because it looks different than you imagined.

Claire completely stole my heart.

Watching a woman in her forties rebuild herself after divorce, heartbreak, and years of putting everyone else first felt so refreshing and honestly inspiring. She was funny, vulnerable, awkward in the most lovable way, and so incredibly real. I found myself rooting for her constantly, not just romantically, but personally. I wanted her to find joy again, confidence again, herself again.

And honestly? I want to be Claire when I grow up (as I sit here, in my mid-40's, married for 15 years and with two teen daughters)

This story balances humor and emotional depth so well. One minute I was laughing at Claire’s dating disasters and the next I was tearing up over the quiet moments of healing, friendship, and learning how to start over when life completely derails your plans.

The romance was such a slow, natural progression and exactly my kind of love story. Miles was patient, grounding, supportive, and their connection developed in such an authentic way while both characters were still healing from their own hurts. Nothing felt rushed or forced. Every woman should have a Miles!

But one of my favorite parts of this book was the sense of community and found family. The neighbors, the friendships, Claire’s relationship with her daughter… it all made the story feel so warm and alive. It genuinely felt like stepping into a little world I didn’t want to leave.

I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved the narration. It brought Claire’s humor, vulnerability, and emotional journey to life so perfectly and made the story even more immersive.

This is one of those books that reminds you it is never too late to begin again. To rediscover yourself. To choose happiness. To become something brighter than before.

I absolutely loved this book! I related so much with the main character as I sometimes feel like I have lost myself and need to step out of my comfort zone. I enjoyed her list of new things she wanted to try and I feel like I need to do the same. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. I always enjoy reading Courtney Walsh's books as they put me in a good mood!

I enjoyed listening to the narrator. I could follow along easily and felt like she did a good job of expressing the appropriate emotions when certain events would happen in the book.

THANK YOU NETGALLEY FOR THE ARC!

My goodness, Courtney Walsh knows what she is doing. This is a hard topic to write about (divorce) and she handed it incredibly well! We have a FMC who is heartbroken and trying to navigate her life and the things she wants to do. The MMC is so kind and funny. I flew through this book. It was SO CUTE. Patti Murrin narrates, and she knows what she’s doing as well. She makes the characters come alive in a way that makes you genuine care about them! Loved loved loved her performance. Both the author and narrator made me fall in love with this book, I couldn’t get enough! This one is out in a few weeks, do yourself a favor and preorder it NOW! You will love it!

Thank you for a copy! I really enjoyed this book. It's nice as a woman in my 30s to find books that have 'older' adults, it can get tiring reading books about 17-23 year old's. These characters seemed very mature, Claire was very relatable even if Miles took way too long to decide to be open to this relationship, but I think many divorced people who were cheated on can understand not wanting to date again even if they have feelings for someone. I appreciated the honest conversations and not spiraling thoughts or miscommunication for their age. I would definitely recommend this book to others. The narrator did a fantastic job giving everyone different voices including the male voices.

Brighter Than Before is a second chance romance to root for.
Pursuing a love that will make you feel vulnerable & is full of chemistry is better than settling, and that is highlighted. The found community is uplifting and well written.
Claire has great introspection and growth & I really grew to love her.
Miles and Claire are some of my favorites now.

I recently discovered Courtney Walsh and have been making my way reading through her novels. This one did not dissapoint. Walsh has a great ability to create fun and relatable characters, weave humor through her stories even when writing about emotionally wrecking life experiences. What an inspiring read this has been for me, I have been dying to read more about women going through and overcoming obstacles in midlife and finding themselves, and this story was captured perfectly.

I absolutely loved this book. For starters, it’s refreshing to read about women older than 25 who have had a lot of good and bad life experiences. I loved this!!! Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh was such a refreshing read centered on a middle aged divorced FMC learning to start over and rediscover herself after her daughter moves abroad. After reading what feels like an endless stream of books with 19 year old FMC’s, this story felt relatable, mature, and comforting all in the best way.

Courtney Walsh has such a charismatic writing style. Her characters feel real, layered, and easy to connect with. She perfectly balances humor and emotional depth effortlessly. There were moments that made me laugh out loud and others that quietly pulled at my heart. Her writing feels intentional, giving meaning to every description and conversation.

Ultimately, this is a story about second chances, growth, and realizing it’s never too late to reinvent yourself and build a life that feels true to who you are. I finished it feeling hopeful and genuinely moved.

If you love women’s fiction with heart, humor, and emotionally rich characters (especially stories featuring women beyond their early twenties), I highly recommend this one. The audiobook narrator does a fabulous job as well!!

Book Report: Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh

After her carefully planned life falls apart…Claire takes a leap of faith and starts over in Chicago with one simple goal: figure out what she really wants. Between new friendships…baking…awkward first dates and rediscovering herself in a brand new city…Claire slowly begins building a life that feels truly her own✨🏙️🧁

…and Courtney Walsh does it again 🎉💖🙌🏻

There’s a reason I have an entire shelf dedicated to Courtney’s books…they are some of my most beloved comfort reads. Brighter Than Before gave me everything I’ve come to love from her stories:
🤭 humor
♥️ heart
🙌🏻found family
✨& that gentle reminder that there’s still goodness in people.

There were so many moments in Claire’s journey that felt deeply relatable and I think a lot of readers will see pieces of themselves in her story. Watching her learn to trust herself again…take risks and rediscover joy was honestly inspiring💛

And Chicago? Total main character energy. I felt like a tourist right alongside Claire as she explored the city and built a new life there. Add in delicious baked treats and the warm community vibes and this book had me both hungry and hopeful.

Now excuse me while I impatiently wait to see what Courtney writes next📚

Well, that was phenomenal…

There’s something about Courtney’s writing (and Patti’s fabulous audiobook narration!) that brings these characters to life in a way that’s raw, real and vulnerable. It’s so human. And it makes me feel like I can see myself in the struggles of these characters even though I haven’t been through the same circumstances that these characters have been. There’s something that connects us as human beings, our struggles and our victories, the moments where we fail and the moments of connection with others that make all the difference. These themes and many more are explored in this book and it gave me all the feels in the best possible way. I already want to hold a physical copy so I can highlight my favorite quotes, particularly in the epilogue.

If you’re thinking about reading this book, do it. Loved it!

I absolutely loved Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh—this was an easy 5-star read for me.

I LOVED Claire! She was so real and honest. This book brings you along on Claire’s journey as she navigates a divorce, heartbreak, embarrassment and the rebuilding of her life as she figures out her passions and wants for the future and now.

She moves to a new city, meets interesting people and tries so many different types of food that her ex husband never wanted to try. All of this and more make for very funny and real moments!

This is one of those books that leaves you feeling encouraged and a little brighter after finishing it. If you love character-driven stories with strong emotional connections and a gentle, uplifting romance, I can’t recommend this one enough.

Okay well I LOVED this! My new favorite Courtney Walsh book!

Brighter Than Before is full of hope and trying new things. Falling in love with yourself and your person. Finding your people. Following your dreams, and getting back up again every time life knocks you down. This is a book bursting with heart and forgiveness and sweetness.

I loved every single character and what they brought to Claire’s world. Miles is my dream guy; Lorraine is the goofy neighbor everyone needs; Minnie is the cheerleader that I aim to be for my mom; Lennon is the cheerleader AND coach that we all need; and Claire is everything I want to be.

This was truly such an enjoyable book to listen to!! I finished it in a few days. I laughed and cried with Claire, and I cheered for her all along the way. ❤️❤️

I have a confession: Courtney Walsh’s Brighter Than Before had me hooked from the very beginning. It’s a heartfelt bounce-back story centered on the lovable Claire, and I found myself connecting with her in so many ways. There were moments when I felt like I was Claire, wanting to text a friend mid-date to spill everything that just happened. Other times, I felt like her best friend, practically yelling at her through the pages.

This book took me on an emotional ride. I laughed, I teared up, and I felt every bit of the love woven throughout the story. I cannot wait to read more of Courtney Walsh’s books. She is definitely an author I look forward to diving into again. I’ll sip my coffee, sit and read my book, and happily stay in the world of Courtney Walsh for a while.

I absolutely LOVED Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh!! 🩷 ♾️ ⭐️ !! It was so refreshing (and relatable) to read about a woman in her 40s. Life can certainly throw some curveballs but we are in charge of how we handle those situations. This story was wrote beautifully and I found myself smiling a lot! Made me think about my own life and the important people in it. The good times, the hard times, the bad times, I wouldn’t change it for anything. O my goodness! This new book from Courtney Walsh is just such a cozy, feel good read with plenty of humor and laugh out loud moments! It has that light, charming vibe, with fun moments, sweet humor, and an absolutely lovable group of characters! But… it also is just a really hopeful story about starting over and figuring yourself out again! I especially enjoyed reading Claire’s journey to find love again. It just felt refreshing, relatable, and full of possibility in a really uplifting way!
There’s definitely a lot of laughter woven in too! (Just wait until you get to the part where Claire is trying to get her first food delivery order). But overall, it’s a story about rediscovery, new beginnings, and finding joy in unexpected places, and it left me feeling genuinely encouraged!

ARC/ ALC REVIEW:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Brighter Than Before proves Courtney Walsh cannot help but write five star stories!!!

Life might have served Claire Karadec an unfair hand, but she is not out of the game. Choosing to exchange her cards, she uproots what is left of her life, relocating to Chicago. Starting over is never easy. Thankfully she has amassed a small community along the way. Armed with a new found confidence, Claire builds the life she has always dreamed of.

Brighter Than Before is the perfect mixture of humor and hope. Claire’s journey to rediscovering herself as a person is not only inspiring, but guaranteed to leave even the most cynical reader feeling empowered and uplifted.

I had absolutely no business connecting with this story (as much as I did). I am not a divorcee, mother, or even in the same age demographic as the FMC. But that is the beauty of Courtney Walsh’s writing. Her work is universally beloved because it depicts realistic characters facing real life problems. No matter what they are up against, her protagonists find a way to triumph through life’s adversities without losing their humanity.

Be sure to read Brighter Than Before (when it releases June 8th) for:
-second chance romance
-FMC baker
-found family (lovable side characters)
-laugh out loud moments

*I had the opportunity to consume this story in multiple formats (electronic and audio). While you can’t go wrong, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Patti Murin has the perfect skill set for bringing Walsh’s words to life.

I received complimentary copies (electronic/ audio) of this book courtesy of Netgalley, Courtney Walsh, and Thomas Nelson Fiction. This is an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced listener copy!

Courtney Walsh is one of my favorite authors as she has a way with character development that creates a natural dialogue and inner lives that makes them easy to invest in. I typically prefer open-door to closed-door romances but the grounded character work is part of what makes the emotional arc so effective in all of her books!

Brighter Than Before follows a deeply human and relatable journey of rediscovery after life takes an unexpected turn. The story centers on a woman navigating the aftermath of divorce who is forced to reassess not only her future, but also who she is outside of the roles she has long defined herself by. As she slowly rebuilds her life, she begins to confront old assumptions, rediscover forgotten parts of herself and open the door to new possibilities she never expected.

I appreciate how the protagonist is refreshingly older than many typical romance or women's fiction leads and that perspective added depth to the themes of identify, loss, and renewal. Her journey did not feel rushed or overly polished, instead, it reflected on the uneven and sometimes uncomfortable process of starting over. The narrators of the audiobook delivered performances that felt authentic and captured both vulnerability and resilience without over-dramatization.

Overall, Brighter Than Before is a thoughtful, emotionally vibrant story about rebuilding after loss and learning that reinvention is possible at any stage of life. I can't wait for Courtney Walsh's next book!

I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook of Brighter Than Before, and it was an absolutely delightful experience from start to finish. This is one of those stories that feels like a breath of fresh air—warm, uplifting, and incredibly easy to sink into. The narration added so much charm to the story. The pacing was smooth, the voices felt natural, and it made the emotional moments land even more effectively. It’s the kind of audiobook that’s perfect for a cozy afternoon or a long drive when you want something comforting but still engaging.

The story balances lighthearted moments with deeper emotional themes, making it both entertaining and meaningful without ever feeling heavy. There’s a sweetness to the storytelling that never crosses into overly sentimental territory—it just feels sincere. Overall, this was a super pleasant listen that left me feeling happy and satisfied. If you’re looking for an audiobook that’s uplifting, easy to enjoy, and full of heart, Brighter Than Before is a wonderful choice.

Brighter than Before by Courtney Walsh is one of those stories that I can turn to when I need a reminder that it is never too late!

Claire's story is incredible and so relatable that it brought me to tears. Her divorce experience, although slightly different from mine, was so painful that my empathy levels exploded! Her journey of self-discovery after being married and mom'ing for 23 years was inspiring, to say the least. And our neighbor Miles... seriously, I don't think it's possible to write characters any more perfect. This is full of slow burn, found family, self-exploration, friends/neighbors to lovers, a hilarious depiction of app dating, and the sweetest HEA I've ever read.

This is the first Courtney Walsh book that I've read, and it will not be the last. I am doing my deep dive as we speak!

Courtney Walsh has done it again with Brighter Than Before. This was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and it absolutely did not disappoint. Huge thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing and Uplift Reads for the gifted copies, including the audiobook, which was fantastic.

Told in dual POV, this story follows Claire, whose life is turned upside down after a painful discovery ends her marriage and the life she thought she had. Starting over in Chicago, she creates a list of bold, hopeful goals, finding a job she loves, building real friendships, and figuring out what she truly wants out of life. What follows is a journey full of growth, unexpected connections, and second chances.

The audiobook narrators did such an incredible job bringing this story to life and pulling me into every emotion.

One of my favorite things about this book was the side characters, they added so much warmth and heart. And I loved how Courtney Walsh made a big city like Chicago feel like it had that small-town charm and sense of community.

I laughed, I cried, and by the end I was completely overwhelmed with emotion in the best way. This was such a heartfelt, uplifting story, and a beautiful reminder of why Courtney Walsh is a favorite of mine.

Definitely add this one to your summer TBR, you won’t want to miss it. ☀️📚

I am for sure "Brighter Than Before" having read this book, Courtney Walsh has given us readers an often looked over population-the 40s!! She nailed the exact book I wanted to read. Even if you don't know if this book is for you, you can not help but smile at the endearing characters , sweet story line and of course a love story that is pure. Walsh is able to write books that are utterly refreshing and make you want to keep picking it up.
Meet Claire, an early 40 something who has hit rock bottom-yes half- humiliating herself infront of her former "society" members all while her ex-husband and new "barbie" are watching on. She finally decides she can only go up, so she packs up and heads to Chicago to start over. She makes herself a list of challenges for herself (try new food, eat alone in a restaurant) and along the way she encounters nosy neighboors and of course that hot guy across the apartment complex whio *of course* has sworn off dating...but when he breaks into the scene I wanted to yell, "Girl if you don't want him I'll take him" I was 100% cheering for them as a couple, but he is not dating. Claire goes on a series of akward/funny dates that will leave you wondering what is truly out there in the wild world of online dating!
I promise you will fall in love and want to "Sip Stay and Sit"

Thank you Courtney Walsh for bringing the spunk back into Rom Com's reminding me of great chemistry, cute banter and at the heart a truly lovely story!
If you love Katherine Center( her older books) you will for sure love this!!

✨beautiful friendships
✨fantastic narrator

This entire thing just felt organic and lovely and emotional and was so well written. These characters are emotionally intelligent and it was such a breath of fresh air.

Thank you so so much for letting me listen in advance! This is an audiobook I’ll absolutely be buying a physical trophy of 🤩🤩

„It’s never too late to begin again.“

What a gorgeous read this is! I had already read the book, but simply had to get the audiobook once it was available and I enjoyed the story just as much the second time (possibly even a bit more). Just take all the stars I have available to give. Clear 5 out of 5 (even 10 out of 5 if you ask me).

This is not just a sweet romcom, but also a pep talk for all of us who need to hear that the world doesn’t end after a bad experience, no matter how bad.
I fell in love with Claire and her moving forward regardless of being scared and scarred badly. All (well… almost all) of the characters in this book are just so loveable, that you’d want them to be your people too. We all need people like them in our lives. Fun, loving and caring.

The narration is by Patti Murin, who will probably not become my favourite voice actor, but did a great job here nevertheless.
I’d recommend this to everyone who loves a story full of love, hope, courage, a little sadness and feeling humiliated, friendship and fulfilling your dreams.
This is not the first book written by Courtney Walsh that I’ve read and it sure won’t be the last.
Thank you to Courtney Walsh, NetGalley and Thomas Nelson fiction for this ARC!

“Every storm must end” ☀️

This book was such an enjoyable and feel good read. ❤️ After discovering her husband’s affair with a much younger woman, and having her entire life upended, Claire has to start life all over again, and she becomes determined to have her new life be brighter than before (see what I did there?). I absolutely loved Claire and her messy, sometimes hard to read 😂, but very realistic journey after a very devastating divorce. She really was the epitome of joy and hope and love and dusting yourself off and trying again. Her relationship with her daughter was AMAZING. The MMC, Miles, was all the things you dream of in a fictional male character. I was swooning over him and his “nice guy” personality. And the date night he came up with?!?! Ugh. Head over heels for him! ❤️ I was overwhelmingly touched by the friendships that Claire cultivated, and that representation that family can be made by those you meet later in life. The disastrous dates were hilarious, the influencer neighbor was a delight, and I wish I hade The Front Porch in my little neighborhood. All of this to really say that I LOVED this sweet and heartwarming little rom com book. I will FOR SURE being checking out this author’s other books, because this one gave me all the warm feels!

I also want to mention that the narration for this book was done by Patti Murin was incredible! She gave Claire and her new life well, life. 🫶🏻

A huge thank you to Thomas Nelson Fiction for the gifted

I loved this book! I’m not dealing with the same things that the FMC is and yet, I still felt so connected to her & was really rooting her on. The meet- cute is one of my favorites I’ve read yet! So fun & silly! 😂 🔑
Claire’s journey was beautiful to watch unfold and Miles is so thoughtful ! This book will have you going from cracking up at the awkward dates, to swooning over the love story unfolding, to tearing up by the end at the growth & healing our main characters both go through in their own ways. 🥹Absolutely recommend! A great reminder to just take the leap! ♥️

- Starting over after divorce
- Characters in their 40’s
- Healing Journey ❤️‍🩹
- Found Family 🥰
- passion for baking 🧁
- Laugh out loud meet- cute 😆
- Disaster Dates 🤪

I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook. The Narrator was fantastic and really brought Claire’s character to life! 🙂

I received a copy of this audiobook from the NetGalley & Thomas Nelson Fiction . This is my honest review.

This book is absolutely adorable! It’s so refreshing to be able to finish a book and look back and love every single thing about it! And the romance is clean, no need to skip chapters to keep out the spice!

Claire, is in her 40s and not letting yesterday’s hurt take away from today’s opportunities. She’s a list maker and keeping herself on task! I loved her will and her determination.

Miles also has some past trauma. But he focuses on making today the best and leaning in to others! The humility just truly shines though!!

But my most absolutely favorite part of this book is the friend’s name is Lennon, named that because her mom was a huge Beatles fan. I gasped when I read that as my daughter’s name is Lennon, because I am a huge Beatles fan! It’s not very often you see the name Lennon!!!! The book earns a Hollywood star for that!!

If you love Katherine Center you will love Courtney Walsh. Patti Murin narrates and brings this romcom to life!

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, Courtney Walsh, and Patti Murin for the advanced copies.

I absolutely adored this book and the characters. This rom-com was witty and made you feel warm inside. It’s rare to find a contemporary romance with an FMC in her 40s and although I’m not quite there yet, Claire was super relatable compared to the typical FMC in her 20s. After a messy divorce, Claire decides to start over and move to a new city. She makes a checklist to face her fears, try new things, and discover what she wants in life. This book felt like a love letter to the beautiful city of Chicago! Chicago is one of my favorite cities to visit so it was fun recognizing a lot of the neighborhoods, places, and foods mentioned in the book. The audiobook narrator, Patti Murin, was absolutely wonderful and truly brought these lovable characters to life.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book and from the beginning I was invested in the characters and I wanted to listen to their story! The narrator in this audiobook is perfect! I love how Claire's character felt so human, she wanted to be tough in her situation, but also she had very natural emotions and feelings with her challenges. Miles is also a character that I felt was human and I liked how realistic this story was. This takes place in Chicago and it was fun to hear a few Easter Eggs I knew from my visits to the city. This is my favorite book by this author!

Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh is an absolutely beautiful book! It is a story of bravery in starting over. I will say that it was hard to read at times just because of the pain that Claire was going through, which obviously says something about the author’s ability to portray thoughts and emotions. Claire’s story, her hopes and dreams, had me speeding through chapters. Claire made me want to be brave and start a list!

This novel had everything: pain, anxiety, adventure, tears, and burst out laughing moments. And, Claire’s new friends, were the BEST! What incredible people…the kind of friends that you can pick up with again no matter how long it has been since you’ve seen them; the kind that are always willing to be present.

Courtney Walsh, thank you for sharing such an inspiring story!

I am so grateful to have discovered Brighter Than Before on NetGalley, so thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, Thomas Nelson, for the opportunity. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator did a phenomenal job of portraying the emotional depth of the characters.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! I loved Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh. Claire discovers her husband has been cheating so newly divorced Claire makes a list determined to make her life better than it was. First she moves to Chicago where she finds new friends, new adventures, and Miles, her mysterious, and handsome neighbor.

Ms. Walsh likes a list. And so do I. Her characters become truly their happiest selves as they process through lists. This book was no different.

I loved Claire’s adventures. I loved who she discovered herself to be. I loved the family she collected along the way. And I want to go sit, sip, and stay awhile at her bakery!

If I had one complaint, I found Claire’s relationship with her ex-husband very frustrating and I really didn’t understand why she did the things she did, or allowed the things she did, when it came to him.

I listened to this on audio and it was delightful. Patti Murin narrates it and she’s fantastic as usual.

Overall if you’re looking for a mid-life coming of age story with some fun romance, try Courtney Walsh. I’m a huge fan!

Claire is single and needing to start over. This was an enjoyable story as we follow along while she finds herself and works on healing and growing. This story did cover some harder topics, but there was a heavy dose of humor to get you through. The narrator did an amazing job with the emotion and bringing the story even more to life! 5⭐️
