Description

Take young artists on a journey of creative self-expression with this wordless picture book about art, Claude Monet, and Claude the dog.

Inspired by a beautiful Claude Monet painting, a little artist decides to create her own masterpiece, but her puppy has other ideas. From grabbing his favorite ball to rolling on the floor, he tries everything to get her attention, and chaos ensues, creating a big, colorful mess. Or is it a mess after all? Perhaps Claude the dog and Claude Monet have a lot more in common than we think.

Told entirely in stunning illustration, Claude is a wordless picture book that introduces young artists to the works of Monet while inspiring creativity and promoting passion over perfection. And at the end, kids can read about the life of Monet and his role in art history. With bold splashes of color across white pages, this inspirational story shows the creative process in full transparency, proving that there are no bad creations, just happy mistakes that are worth more than a thousand words.

Don't wait to be perfect to start.

Take young artists on a journey of creative self-expression with this wordless picture book about art, Claude Monet, and Claude the dog.

My first wordless book of the year and it's outstanding! I enjoyed the story and how it defeats our tendency to perfectionism. Monet's painting here may be considered by the protagonist as the "perfect" piece she wants to emulate. However, in the end, she mess up. Enter her dog, Claude and it made a whole lot difference (and lots of mess) in the story.

This story is a wordless picture book. It shows the love of animal lovers, and the Love of art. Using collaboration to show the nature of Claude Monets work and the spark of inspiration. This may be a quick resource for art teachers when creating a lesson on impressionist painting, and younger art expression.

I love this wordless picture book and think that kids and their adults will too. This is a title that encourages sitting down together, observing and having a conversation, all while having fun. A child will also enjoy paging through this one on their own.

The illustrations are just so very charming, making this a book that will be picked up more than once. Watch how the girl concentrates on her art while her dog tries to get her attention. Look out for what happens when the two collide!

I highly recommend this adorable title that is inspired by one of Monet’s paintings (the Claude of the title).

Many thanks to NetGalley and Familius for this title. All opinions are my own.

"Claude" by Phyllis Harris is a wordless book that tells its story through simple illustrations. It gives a brief introduction to the art of Monet to young children and underscores that sometimes the best art comes from imperfection. I love the brief note at the end about the illustrator's inspiration and the blurb on Monet that is simple enough for a very young child to understand. This is would be a very fun book to incorporate into a child's first art museum visit or painting project.

A delightful, word-less book about a young artist attempting her own masterpiece after seeing Impressionist art. Her rambunctious puppy gets in the way - but in the end, helps contribute to a work that is both wonderful and fun. I loved how the book celebrates the idea that High Art doesn't have to be stuffy or pretentious but can actually be fun!

This book was so beautifully illustrated! I absolutely love that there are no words - what a beauty in way to prompt conversation and reflection in children! I am a school psychologist so often have conversations with kids about perfectionism and I think this book could be a beautiful way to support that conversation.

A wordless picture book showing a girl trying to get her art piece just perfect. But her dog, Claude, helps her find beauty in art when it isn’t perfect. The illustrations are lovely and sweet. And I love that it is inspired by a work by Claude Monet, one of my favorite artists. I could see this being useful for an art teacher for a lesson on impressionism or creativity. I feel this is a book to be discussed with a small person to see what they are seeing and how they feel about it.

What an engaging wordless book inspired by a painting by artist Claude Monet! I would absolutely love to have a hard copy of this book for my elementary school library, wordless picture books are one of the top check outs they I can't keep on the shelves. I absolutely love the illustrations, the line drawing combined with color and the choices of those colors. The story that the pictures tell end up in a sweet solution of combining the painting that the girl intended and incorporating the puppy and his mischievous addition. I love the photos, info about Monet and most of all the authors note about perfectionism and how she changed her view of it and how it relates to Claude the artist and Claude the dog. Absolutely recommend this for any kiddo who enjoys wordless picture books and any child who is interested in being the artist they were meant to be. Huge thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!!

So much action and inferred story from this wordless book. Whimsical and fun! Filled with emotions, actions, pleading, and completion. Artistic and showing that sometimes good art comes from the least likely of places.

What a wonderful wordless book that allows the reader to create their own story!
The illustrations were so vivid, and young readers will, undoubtedly, love the antics of the dog. I especially liked the Author-Illustrator note which expresses what every child will appreciate.

Bright and bold, with simple and clean illustrations that tell a charming wordless story. The very brief backmatter gives a little context for Claude's name.

I received a free eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Even though I’m usually trolling NetGalley for new storytime picks, I can’t resist a wordless picture book! These were SO much fun when I was still teaching - a great way to talk about storytelling and perspective. The kids can create their own narrative as they read, or whoever is reading to them can make up a new story each time (although as I recall from my teenage babysitting days reading Good Dog Carl to my cousins, kids have an uncanny ability to remember that “you told it differently last time!”).

Anyway, this is about a little girl trying to create a painting and get the canvas to match the scene in her head. Meanwhile all her dog wants to do is go for a walk. His little hanging head is heartbreaking! Eventually he gets so bored he starts chasing his tail for attention and knocks over all of the paint. Which creates a brand NEW work of art.

The illustrations are extremely cute and the sparing use of color really effective (just black and white with red, yellow, green, and blue for the little girl’s paints).

This wordless picture book is great for budding artists. The little girl tries to replicate a famous painting she had seen. During her attempt, her puppy tries to get her attention. It accidentally messes up her painting. In the end she creates a masterpiece with her puppy.

I love the book because it lets children tell the story with their own words. It teaches kids to create their own art and appreciate the experience.

Claude is a wordless picture book that follows Claude and her dog as they are inspired by the paintings of Claude Monet. While there are no words, the illustrations allow you to create your own narrative. Claude and her dog are drawn in black and white, while her painting is in color. It's eye catching, especially when the dog gets into the paint. There's a bio on Claude Monet at the end of the book.

Thank you, NetGalley and Familius, for this ARC.
