Description

Grades 3 to 6+, part of a 6-title series.

It’s becoming more and more common to see AI-created illustrations in children’s books. Some are delightful! But compared to Eric Carle, Maurice Sendak, and other beloved illustrators, these works are missing a little something: the unique perspective and feeling of a human artist. In this book, readers learn about GenAI: pros and cons, what it can and can’t do, and more. Examples of great illustrators demonstrate the specialness of human talent while concluding chapters encourage readers to find their own inspiration off-screen.

Kathleen Connors A Human Being Illustrated This Story is a look at art, both human and AI, from an educational perspective. It speaks to young learners about the difference between AI created art and human created heart. The way it is written eases readers into the kinds of ways people are illustrators and how we all have a different style. It also shows learners some of the GenAI places they can create their own art, going so far as to have them draw something and then have them put a prompt in AI to see what they like best.

What was done well in the book was the reminder that a lot of AI is built on using copyrighted material, which is illegal. It also truly stressed the difference between human created art and AI created art. While AI may not be for everyone, this is a book that tried (and was somewhat successful) in finding a balance between educating proper use of AI while still prompting human created art.

Perfect for the classroom. Great formatting to support reading. Adding comprehension questions at the back would enhance the usability for teachers with low/no prep reading resources. Did you know fact boxes would also make this more engaging. Important topic to have in a kids informative texts
