Description
Neville was a penguin known for being somewhat of a risk-taker.
He was brave, bold, and beloved by all. Until the day he was eaten by a whale. Or so it seemed . . . because that was only the beginning of the story. This delightful—and daring—tale is a companion to the award-winning and best-selling Frank's Red Hat.
Advance Praise
"The inviting tone winks at the reader with a bit of meta-textual humor while never making Neville the butt of the joke-he is indeed brave, bold, and fearless, just not particularly adept at planning. The slightly heavy text is broken up by comical dialogue between Reg and Neville, and the repeated "We are not eaten yet" is an easy anchoring phrase for a readaloud. Collaged art varies in texture, from the black-and-white blotchiness of the penguin's icy home to the knitted rug and colorful couch of Neville's makeshift living room. Fans of Frank will be excited to see that Neville didn't end up as a whale snack, and new readers will be eager to check out the other book." Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books,
". Fans of Avery's earlier book will be delighted to see Neville back and more resolute than ever, his tenacity a model for times when it's imperative to persist. Playful storytelling and art blend for a paean to the power of determination.(Picture book. 4-8) " Kirkus Reviews

Wonderful artwork, very entertaining and good for the imagination. I loved this book. A wonderful story about a penguin that gets swallowed by a whale and the penguin plans an escape.

What a cute little tale about never giving up. Neville makes the best of his circumstances and refuses to accept defeat. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the artwork.

I loved Neville's never-say-die attitude and resourcefulness! This is a fun story that is entertaining for adults as well as children while incorporating a great life lesson. I also loved the simple color scheme. Illustrations were a perfect fit for the Neville's vibe.

Neville gets eaten by a whale where he meets Reg. Luckily the story doesn’t end because being eaten by a whale takes a long time. Neville tries to entertain himself, but gets bored. He decides it would be a good idea to escape. Eventually, the two end up being spit out by the whale and land were novel started. Reg thinks he’s had enough adventuring, but Neville has not!
I like this companion book. It’s nice to know that Neville in the end does survive. It was a little quirky, but I did like it.

Neville's Great Escape is a funny yet thoughtful tale about perseverance and bravery in the face of uncertainty. The dialogue between the two main characters is witty and reminiscent of Douglas Adams. Great message delivered in an entertaining way!
As a youth services librarian, when I found out Frank's eaten friend was getting his own story, I literally ran around telling my co-workers about how excited I was! Neville's great escape was an adorable sequel about never giving up and being tenacious, or the friend of a tenacious person, can be a very good thig! "We are not eaten yet" is a great little catchphrase for Neville. The illustrations are more colorful in this sequel and there will be laugh out loud moments for kiddos! I can't wait to see this on my library shelf!

Neville, a penguin, was a risk taker, and then one day a whale swallows him. He meets Reg, a seal, and when Neville gets bored they play cards. Then the whale shakes and groans and they realize they’re going to be eaten and then… Great ending!
