Description

A holy relic brutally defaced. A series of grisly murders. A secret that could change the world.

When a holy relic is defaced and a reclusive old prospector horribly murdered, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Agent Frankie Cash and Eagle County Sheriff Jim Colcord team up on their most enigmatic and dangerous case yet.

The murder is followed by the equally horrendous killing of a controversial scientist, tortured using medieval methods. The investigation uncovers further bizarre killings, a baffling money trail, and a fanatical secret society. But the key to everything is an alien artefact UFO researchers believe will change the world...

Meanwhile, the resurrected Neanderthals who vanished into the Colorado mountains during Cash and Colcord's last case are planning something that can only spell disaster for any nearby Homo sapiens.

This sequel to New York Times bestselling novel Extinction is a twisty supernatural-themed thriller full of gripping twists, perfect for fans of Michael Crichton and Scott Mariani.

I always love Douglas Preston titles, whether on his own, with Lincoln Child, or now here with Aletheia. You are always guaranteed a good fast paced, page turning read and Paradox didn’t disappoint. Very much enjoyed the interplay between Cash and Colcord. They make a great duo of characters, even when not always agreeing on everything. The story flew by, fast-paced and intriguing. Very much enjoyed this novel and I am very much looking forward to possible future novels in this series.

A great fast paced, very enjoyable story. Cash and Colcord team up again after the events at Erebus in the previous story. This time it's to investigate a strangely ritualistic murder of a reclusive old man living in the mountains. But not all is as it seems. Plenty of unexpected twists, plenty of action, and a satisfying conclusion. I look forward to Cash and Colcard teaming up again in the next book in this series!
Thanks to Netgalley, Aria & Aries Publishers, and Douglas Preston and Aletheia Preston for the free ARC. All opinions are my own.

4.5 uppded to 5
Had a lot of fun in reading Extinction with so many twists and a mix of sci-fi and futuristic science. This is a sort of follow up and we meet again Cash and Colcord.
There's a lot going o: alien, relics, Vatican, and a world building that was developed in the previous book and we find again in this one.
There's a sense of doom and dread and there a plot that kept me turning pages.
Well done,Recommended. Many thanks for this digital copy, all opinions are mine

Combine the disappearance of a relic in Rome, a murder with mysterious elements, and the search for alien artefacts, and you have a novel with a breakneck pace and an intriguing plot.
It couldn’t be otherwise when it comes to Douglas Preston, an author I’ve been reading since his early days with Lincoln Child. In this case, he is joined by Aletheia Preston, and together they manage to maintain the essence of their work, which is to provide pure entertainment for the reader.

Cash and Colcard are back and what a welcome return. A fast paced thriller that never let's up. An artifact stolen from the Vatican leads back to Colorado. Though it's not a direct followup to Extinction its in the same world. Loved this book and can't wait for the next one. Douglas Preston is joined by his daughter as co-author and it doesn't miss a beat. Thanks to Aria & Aries and Netgalley for this review copy.

"Paradox" is the second book in the "Cash&Colcord" series by Douglas Preston and the first book he's written together with his daughter Aletheia. This second book can be read as a standalone, though events from the first in the series are mentioned that are spoilers for "Extinction".

Cash and Colcord try to solve the ritualistic murder of a recluse man. The murder might have something to do with a holy relic and/or a scientist from San Francisco and/or money laundering, and then there are more murder victims.

I had an idea what the whole story was about early on, but enjoyed the police procedural/forensic parts of the novel and how the professional relationship between Cash and Colcord developed. Maybe there were too many different POV in this novel, maybe it wasn't the POVs but the many secondary characters, maybe it was the above mentioned 'what it was about', but I didn't like this one as much as the first in the series. Still, I am looking forward to the next instalment in the series.
