Description
Mari loves to help Granny sell their ripe guavas at the weekly market. Every week, she hears the cheerful chorus of Miss Hyacinth singing "Come fa yuh mangoes, sweet and juicy," Fitzroy shouting, "Fish, fish flying fish, one ah dollar," and Mamee calling "Sugar cakes? Tamarind balls? Guava cheese?" On Saturdays, they are one big family.
But today, Mari's friend brings news that a sugarcane truck toppled over on the main road, so customers can't reach the market. Without customers, the vendors won't make enough money to buy what they need for their families and businesses. But Mari is a problem solver, and she has an idea. What about... a great market swap!
Set in a market on the Caribbean island of Barbados.
Encourages problem solving and creative thinking.
Endnotes provide further learning on markets, the types of food in the book, and creole languages.

I was drawn to this book because it reminded me of a book from my own childhood. I absolutely love the story and the message of community. PLUS the information in the back. It’s a beautiful book and my almost two year old loved it too. It actually releases on his birthday so I will be buying it for him

I received an electronic ARC from Publisher Spotlight | Barefoot Books through NetGalley.
Readers watch as Mari prepares to go to the weekly marked with her Granny. They greet everyone there and set up their stall. Surprisingly, no one has come to buy. They soon learn an accident is blocking the road. Mari and her friend Wendy try to take products to the tourists and offer different deals. Nothing works so Mari has one more excellent idea - she begins to barter with the other sellers and everyone has what they need for the week. Brightly colored illustrations capture the mood and spirit of the market.

Good book if you want to teach a class about different foods or cultures. The colorful illustrations and happy story seemed to match in tone. Very enjoyable. I also liked how the text moved around on some of the pages
Thank you #NetGalley and #BarefootBooks for the ARC read of this book.
The author is from Barbados so this is a Barbados type market. It teaches on how to come up with a solution when a problem occurs. In the back of the book there is a lot of cool information about markets and Barbados.
Super cool illustrations and a great read.
This book needs to be sent to members of Congress. It's just within their reading level and hopefully will help them understand how people actually get food and what happens when food distribution systems collapse.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
