Description

In a magical faraway wood, a young boy must begin his quest to fill the pages of his life’s story.

Sprout lived happily with his loving parents at their farm in the forest. He grows as comfortably as a flower in a well-tended bed and loves nothing more than a new story. When his parents gift him a beautifully handcrafted leather-bound book, Sprout is eager to absorb yet another new tale. That is, until he opens the book and finds it blank with only one word inscribed on the title page: his name.

Equipped with a few necessities, the support of his family, and an adventurous spirit, Sprout must pull up his roots and begin the journey of a lifetime to fill the pages of his book. Along the way, he meets friends, foes, damsels, and danger, each encounter marking a more thrilling chapter in his tale than the last. Will these new experiences help him grow as strong as the tallest trees and as rich in knowledge as the surrounding soil? Will he succeed in filling the pages of his own story?

The Book of Sprout shows what it means to do just that. A modern folktale that’s bloomed over generations, Sprout’s fantastical journey reminds us to take risks, lead with an open mind, and spread our roots farther than we dreamed they could reach.

Advance Praise

“Why dragons steal fair maidens and what they plan to do with them, no one can really say. But these are the questions that arise in the mind of a young and curious Sprout who knows that in the olden days, people carried stories like seeds—planting them in hearts, where they might grow into tall trees of unspoken, eternal wisdom. Hundreds of years from now, readers like you will still enjoy and savor what Karen Norheim has done. How mighty strokes on her magical keyboard have brought to life a timeless tale of courage, kindness, struggle, and compassion. Stories that will be spoken, shared, and passed down through generations. From fireside to fireside—including yours”. —Gair Maxwell, author, Big Little Legends

"Sprout’s tale is not only a charming story—it’s a therapeutic tool, a developmental primer, and a love letter to resilience. As a licensed professional counselor and health leader, I see this book’s value far beyond the story itself. It opens doors for children and adults alike to reflect on the life they're writing—and to believe they can edit their path with empathy, courage, and care." —Dr. Kryn McClain, DHA, MSED, LPC, founder and CEO, CatapalloVR, Inc.

“Storytelling makes for powerful teaching, and this is the best kind. The Book of Sprout is a beautiful story, glowing with color and life, that tells a simple tale of a child’s adventure growing into a rich and complex journey through truth, knowledge, wisdom, and goodness. Pick it up and you’ll finish it in one sitting.” —Radha Pyati, PhD, chancellor and dean, Penn State Berks

“The Book of Sprout is a beautiful story about the power of curiosity, learning, creativity and persistence. It reminded me how much good can happen when you approach people and situations with an open heart and an open mind. I highly recommend this book for all ages.” —Thomas Ripsam, president and CEO, Martin Guitars

“This is a very readable book about a young boy learning to discover his very own story. A call to adventure to write his own book. A highly recommended read for children and parents learning to create the right conditions and environments for personal growth and success.” —Gregory J. Hagin, principal and managing director, CCS Fundraising

“The Book of Sprout captures the magic of learning, kindness, and finding meaning in everyday moments. It’s a story that stirs both imagination and heart—a rare reminder that every life is a book waiting to be written. A great read for kids and kids at heart of every age.” —Joni S. Nagle, president, Naugle Associates, LLC

"Through the profound image of a blank book, Richard Gleason and Karen Norhiem remind us that life isn't something that happens to us—it's something we write, one choice at a time. A tender, timeless tale about the courage to begin your own story." —Matthew Nealon, CEO, Mechanical X Advantage

The Book of Sprout by Karen Norheim is a heartwarming children’s story about imagination, courage, and discovering your own path.

The story follows a young boy named Sprout who receives a beautifully handcrafted, leather-bound book from his parents. Expecting a grand story inside, he is shocked to discover that the pages are completely blank. Instead of giving him a finished tale, his parents gently encourage him to fill the book with his own adventures. And so, Sprout sets off on a journey, not just across places, but into his own creativity and bravery.

What makes this story especially charming is its gentle, storybook feel. There is a warmth to Sprout’s adventure that makes it both comforting and inspiring. His journey unfolds with imagination and heart, carrying a meaningful message about growth, courage, and finding your place in the world. It subtly reminds young readers that their stories matter and that sometimes, the greatest adventures are the ones we create ourselves.

The writing style is simple and accessible, making it perfect for early readers or for reading aloud. At the same time, the whimsical tone keeps the narrative engaging and emotionally resonant. The illustrations beautifully complement the text, adding to the magical atmosphere and making each page inviting to explore.

Overall, The Book of Sprout is a sweet and uplifting read. It would work wonderfully as a classroom read-aloud, especially when discussing creativity and self-confidence, or as a cozy story time at home with parents that encourages children to dream big. A delightful tale with a positive and empowering message.

This was such a quick and wonderful read for children. Perfect as a bedtime story, or as a story a teacher could read to the children in their classroom. Even I, a thirty year old, highly enjoyed this read.

When a young boy is gifted a blank notebook and told all he needs to do is record his own adventures, he sets out across the countryside on a journey to find just that-- an ongoing adventure worthy of recording into his delightful book filled with blank pages. Along his journey, the young boy meets an assortment of unique and interesting characters. Of course, as in any other fairy tale of such an epic scope, moral lessons are simply waiting to be discovered.

Young readers will find lessons about friendships, social responsibility, frugality, compassion, and bravery. Teachers and librarians will adore the fairy tale style prose of this chapter book, and parents and family members will adore the book's ability to engage and absorb young readers into an adventure through literacy.
