Description
She’s a green juice-guzzling hedge witch who accidentally freed an ancient, pissed-off wizard who’s been trapped for centuries.
Grumpy cursed wizard meets unhinged demon hunting witch in modern day San Francisco. He might annoy her enough that she wants to end him, but if he dies, she dies too.
Sorrel Redwood has two rules: never run out of sage and never face a demon without clean underwear. The first is practical. The second is personal.
Raised on a commune and trained in herbcraft, Sorrel sees what others can’t—spirits and demons that stalk San Francisco’s alleys, rooftops, and fragile Victorians. Banishing them pays the rent. Hunting the ones who killed her mother drives her forward.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But when a routine job unleashes Ranth, a powerful wizard trapped in a cursed bracelet, Sorrel is suddenly on every demon’s menu. Bound together by dark magic, the two must dodge feral hellhounds, unravel the secrets of an ancient cult, and fight the attraction simmering between them. Because if Ranth dies, so does Sorrel—and she’s not about to let her life, or her heart, be someone else’s curse.

This had that fantasy element that I was looking for and was glad I got to read this. The characters were wonderfully done and worked in this universe, it left me wanting to read more in this world and was engaged with what happened. J. Morgyn White has a strong writing stye and am excited for more in the Nightshade Hearts world.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
5/5🌟
An easy 5 stars for me! I love how this author writes! She mixes funny with feelings so effortlessly and I absolutely love it. I was cracking up with the flowery curse words (“flipping foxgloves!”, “what the hellebore do you mean?”) it’s a whole vibe and honestly, I like them better 😅
This, mixed in with feelings- “All I can offer is my heart’s promise that I will bear this sorrow with you. You are not alone.” See what I mean?! This book was truly fun. So much found family and laughter! But it’s gonna hit you in the feels too. “Minute things can cause momentous change.” ‘“Kiss me as if there was no last time,” he rasped.’
You’re gonna enjoy this book if you like a fast paced witchy fantasy with great found family, an all-green-flags MMC, a sweet and sassy FMC, and a lovable cat!
There is open door spice near the end of the book (after a slow burn, hello!) I would rate it 2/5 🌶️🌶️ on the spice scale. Thank you so much to the author for the eARC. This voluntary review is my honest thoughts and opinions about the book.
I really enjoyed all the herbs and crystals and the found family aspects. I thought that the slow burn romance between the two MCs was believable and so good! I absolutely would have read another 200 pages with these characters! I vote for more Sorrel and Ranth!

Demons for Breakfast
J. Morgyn White
This story is about a witch who hunts demons in San Francisco, lives by practical rules involving sage and underwear, and is driven by the need to avenge her mother’s death. When a routine job binds her life to a powerful wizard trapped in a cursed bracelet, everything escalates fast. What makes this book special is the tone. It is funny, feral, and emotionally sincere all at once. The banter is sharp, the magic feels lived in, and the balance between chaos and heart is perfectly paced.
My favorite part was the dynamic between Sorrel and Ranth. She is sweet, capable, and hilarious. He is the rare all green flags MMC who is powerful without being toxic. The slow burn was delicious and the found family vibes absolutely stole my heart.

I really enjoyed this book even if I only understood 75% of what was going on. Like the first book (interconnected standalone so don’t have to read it but you should) this was fast paced and chaotic! I’m not into hippy stuff so some of the details went over my head but it didn’t matter. Loved Sorrel, Ranth and all the gang. Excited to see where the next book takes them as it’s set up to continue.
What an incredibly fun, bold and wildly entertaining read Demons for Breakfast by J. Morgyn White is. From the very first pages, the story bursts with energy, blending humour, dark intrigue, and imaginative storytelling in a way that feels fresh and completely engaging.
The novel’s voice is a true standout sharp, witty, and full of personality. The characters are vibrant and memorable, carrying the story with dynamic interactions and a sense of controlled chaos that makes the book hard to put down. I really did struggle and stayed up well into the early hours! Beneath the playful concept lies genuinely compelling writing and strong narrative momentum.
Original, clever, and thoroughly enjoyable, this is a story that confidently embraces its uniqueness. A fantastic read for those who enjoy fantasy with humour and bite.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC
What a fun and engrossing book!
This is almost a how to guide - how to cast a spell, how to make a protection circle (hint: triangles are better) and, most importantly, how to battle demons.
Part of a series of stand alone, urban, demon fantasy books, Demons for Breakfast follows Sorrel as she deals with life as a 24 yo learning to exist with her burgeoning powers and the recent, traumatic, loss of her mentor & mother.
It takes place in Our World. Our California, but where witches, wizards, Gardens and demons exist alongside us.
Maybe they do now? I haven’t been to San Francisco. Ever.
In the very first chapter we are introduced to a centuries old wizard, Ranth, who Sorrel manages to bind herself to. Then we are off to the races!
Be prepared for DETAILED Craft and lots of veganism (I’m here for it! So tired of hearing about roasted duck & potatoes) as well as a glorious cast of found family characters. I think Bud is my favorite.
I thoroughly enjoyed the ride! There’s some spice, lots of death and a cat.
In other words - the coziest of scary demon killing books!

J continues to write stories that sing straight to my soul.
Thank you, J. Morgyn White and NetGalley for an eARC.
J is a master of writing fast-paced stories that only span a few days but will live rent-free in your head for so much longer after you finish reading. She also knows how to write characters you can't help but feel passionate about. Every part of FMC Sorrel's Scooby-gang is lovable in their own unique way. Even though they are very well fleshed out with some backstory and how they came to be a part of Sorrel's orbit, I still craved to know more about them. I will take side stories, spin-offs, bonus chapters, really anything; just feed it to me. Sorrel herself was very relatable with her I can teach myself anything attitude and immense love and respect for the plant world. From the very early chapters of this book, I knew it would be a read I absolutely loved. The further I read, the more I knew I was right.
I'm going to be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to be a Ranth fan. Not really my type at the start but he grew on me like infectious mold until I couldn't breathe without him. His heart is always in the right place, and he is very protective of Sorrel, even if she thinks she doesn't need it. I would read a whole series just about Ranth and his order that takes place in his original time. While I have never been to San Francisco, I feel like I now know which parts I would love to visit first that were mentioned in this book. That is something that I uniquely love about Urban Fantasy when the author obviously knows a lot about the setting they're writing about. You come away from the book feeling like you know things you may not have learned from usual tourist sites or guides about a real-life place you could one day visit.
This book was action and mystery packed right from the first chapter to the last, and my only issue is I wanted more. I didn't want it to end, and I wanted to know if it is connected to the other book in the Nightshade Hearts series, Too Cursed to Kiss. If you like the fast pace of Demons for Breakfast definitely check out Too Cursed to Kiss. If you loved Charmed, Buffy The Vampire Slayer or Shadowhunters, then definitely give Demons for Breakfast a read.

Thank you victory editing netgalley co-op for e arc copy of demons for breakfast
Flipping foxgloves 😂 I actually really enjoyed this I loved the witchy vibes and the slag for swear words, yes it was chaotic but I thought it was funny definitely a solid 4 stars
This was a book with witchcraft, found family, a quest, a cute cat, and a lot of foxgloves. Sorrel has developed a new normal after her mom was taken and that all goes awry when Ranth literally attaches himself to her. We follow them on their quest to break the curse and return Ranth to where he belongs. I enjoyed the cozy vibes we got and the found family aspect. It would be fun to see more from Sorrel and Ranth and their lessons!
Open Door Romance (one scene)
Thank you so much for the opportunity to read this arc!
This was a a great cozy urban Fantasy read. I immediately got ghostbusters with a touch of good witch vibes, but also way different hahahaha. The FMC (Sorrel) is basically a witch demon hunter and gets herself in a real sticky situation by unintentionally binding herself to the MMC (Ranth) who is a cursed human Wizard.
This was so much fun to read and loved the alchemy magic and the journey to break this curse. The slow-burn is great. And the banter hahaha! I chuckled quite a bit. Can’t wait to read more in this world.

Such good vibes ! A action-packed charming urban fantasy / paranormal romance.
This book was not what I thought it would be but I was pleasantly surprised.
I loved the Charmed vibes of the main characters and the quirky found family she is surrounding herself with.
The writing style is unconventional and adds a lot to the atmosphere.
I was not sure about the romance, which was a bit too much « insta-love » since the story covers less than a week. It took time for me to feel invested.
And I found the portal mechanism a bit too repetitive.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and everyone involved for the ARC.

If you enjoyed Too Cursed to Kiss, you will enjoy this one! It is a fast paced, action packed and full of herbs and spells. Not to mention, a sexy wizard!
This is full of forced proximity, hedge witch, ancient wizard, curse, demons, portals and more!
Demons for Breakfast by J. Morgan White is an exciting story full of twists that keeps me on edge. The female main character, Sorrell, is strong, independent, and skilled at fighting demons, but she learns to rely on the male main character, Ranth, as the story progresses. Their growing trust adds depth to the story and makes the plot more engaging. The ending left me wanting more!
I’ve made an effort this year to really limit my requests to books that fit directly with my favorite genres, and this is one such book. This is definitely what I’d call inside my favorite genre, and I had lots of fun reading this. At times, though, I felt that maybe a little bit of words could be cut down to make the book a little smoother. However, I quite enjoyed Ranth and Sorrel and how their relationship progressed. Definitely read this if you love paranormal romance or urban fantasy. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
If you like your paranormal stories with a side of chaos, humor, and characters who are somehow adorably clueless yet weirdly brilliant, then Demons for Breakfast is about to be your new favorite morning ritual.
This book had me smiling like an idiot and laughing out loud more times than I can count. The characters? Absolute disasters—in the most lovable way possible. They stumble into situations with the energy of “this is probably a bad idea” and then somehow solve problems with surprising cleverness. It’s like watching a group of golden retrievers accidentally defeat demons. Delightful.
The charm of this book really comes from the characters. They’re cute, chaotic, and endearingly oblivious, but when things get serious, you realize they’re actually pretty sharp. That mix makes the story feel light, fun, and impossible not to root for.
And honestly, any book that can make me laugh while also making me invested in the characters’ ridiculous adventures deserves applause.
Anything with witchcraft instantly has me interested, thank you for the opportunity to read the ARC!
I did not realise it was interconnect with other books so I am definitely going to be finding the others
It was chaotic and the FMC was a little sassy but at times a bit too stubborn, I feel like the earth power should be a good thing to use especially as we have veganism
Urban fantasy Witches | Cursed bond | Forced proximity |
Elizabeth R, Reviewer
Demons For Breakfast is chaotic, funny, and unexpectedly heartfelt — the kind of urban fantasy romance that knows exactly what it’s doing and leans all the way in. 🌿😈
Sorrel is an absolute delight: a hedge witch with sage in her pockets, creative herbal swearing, and a demon-hunting side hustle that pays the bills and fuels her grief. When she accidentally frees (and magically binds herself to) Ranth — an ancient, grumpy wizard trapped in a cursed bracelet — the story kicks into high gear. Forced proximity, cursed fate, demon chaos, and a very slow-burn attraction? Yes please.
The banter is sharp, the magic feels lived-in, and the found family vibes are strong. Overall this was such a fun ride.
Perfect for readers who love:
✨ Witchy urban fantasy
😈 Demons + curses
🌿 Herbcraft and cosy magic
💚 Emotionally healthy romance
🔥 Slow burn with open-door payoff
🫶 Found family chaos
A strong, entertaining entry in the Nightshade Hearts world — and I’ll happily read more Sorrel and Ranth. 💫
Thank you to NetGalley and SCYON Press for the ARC!
🔮 If he dies, she dies and the demons are already circling. 🔮
This was such a fun read! The push and pull between the fmc and mmc was so entertaining, the kind where she did know if she wanted to throttle him or sit in his lap 🤣
With witches, wizards and demons, this urban fantasy romance was so interesting and learning so much as far as how she puts her different spells together and learning how certain ingredients and crystals interact in 'witchcraft'. The forced proximity, I loved it! The found family I eat up every time because family is what you make it and I will always love when friend turns family. This is a slow burn with a cursed mmc, so jump in if that's up your alley! ✨
