Description
Revenants, The Odyssey Home, is the story of a grief-stricken candy-striper serving in a VA hospital following her brother’s death in Viet Nam whose struggle to return home an anonymous veteran of the Great War must overcome the skullduggery of a local congressman who not only controls the hospital as part of his small-town fiefdom but knows the name of her veteran. A name if revealed would end his political ambitions and destroy his fifty-year marriage. In its retelling of Odysseus’s journey, Revenants casts a flickering candle upon the charon toll exacted not only from the families of those who fail to return home but of those who do.
Advance Praise
Like the best of literature, Revenants, the Odyssey Home, is difficult to categorize. It’s a mystery, a love story, a coming-of-age story, an historical novel, a story of political intrigue, a war novel. Its richness is the richness of life. Its intention is to be compelling entertainment and to evoke timeless and universal truths. As such, Revenants will not fade quickly as less substantial novels do but will resonate in the reader’s heart and mind for years to come.

The true damage of war isn’t the war-racked towns and cities, nor is it the the military losses. It’s the damage done to the survivors and their families. As Scott Kauffman elides past one war then another we see this damage portrayed movingly in his characters. This is a book you must read to see the truth of war.

Betsy always enjoyed life's treasures, and Christmas time
was definitely one of her favorite. Of course it involved receiving a special
Christmas package from her favorite older brother, Nathan, who was serving in
the war in Viet Nam. But this time, she would receive more than what she
bargained for. Her package arrives with a more bitter than sweet feeling for
Betsy and her family, as the heavy and ruthless news dawns upon them that their
beloved brother and son will never return home again. The mood of the story
shifts and turns as we slowly start to see Betsy falter under the reality of
the loss of her brother. Not only has Betsy's life changed by her loss, but she
will also need to face the consequences resulting from her rebellious and
destructive behavior. She is given the choice to redeem herself and work as a
candy striper at the VA hospital. As she starts working at the hospital she
becomes more acquainted with the double-crossing local congressmen, who has
more secrets and plans up his sleeve than he'd like to reveal.
Revenants: The Odyssey Home is a beautifully written novel which
embraces the harsh realities of life, encompassing the reader with the rough
and genuine emotions of the life altering choices made by our protagonist.
Scott Kauffman tells an intriguing story which will linger in the reader's mind
far after the final page has been turned
