Description
Does a day without difficult news seem out of reach? Does this world seem topsy-turvy at best, toxic at worst? Max Lucado’s sound biblical insights and signature storytelling provide strength and encouragement amid the current chaos and exhaustion.
In Unbreakable Courage, today's headlines and the truth of Scripture intersect in compelling fashion. Max offers a fresh look at the story of Elijah the prophet, showing readers how they can stand strong day by day in the face of turbulent times, regardless of the challenging circumstances they may face.
In today’s world, we see echoes of those unsettled, contentious times Elijah endured. Radical departures from long-held truths are taking center stage. Change is evident everywhere we look—in homes, churches, schools, government, and the workplace. We often feel as if we’re swimming upstream in a downstream world. Yet the story of Elijah urges us to have hope in the one true living God. Elijah’s unswerving belief fueled his courage, and it will do the same for us.
Max provides a field manual on how to have strong faith during a time of spiritual drought, anxiety, and exhaustion. He invites us to lean in and let Elijah’s story remind us to
- wait for God in solitude and silence,
- pray impossible prayers,
- live with an expectation of divine disruption,
- turn to God during emotional lows, and
- understand the spiritual battles we fight.
Elijah’s story will help calm readers’ fears and guide their steps. Faith in our unchanging God instills a capacity for living a renewed life of courage. With God’s help and following Elijah’s inspiring example, readers will discover strength to face the challenges of this life and the courage to make a difference.

Max Lucado is a gifted author who always does a beautiful job of relating to his readers. In Unbreakable Courage, he brings to life Elijiah's journey and relates it to today's struggles, troubles, and low points. If you don't know Elijiah's story, Max tells it in a relatable way.
I'm a huge Max Lucado fan because of his ability to talk to the reader, not at them. He can take both familiar and unfamiliar stories from the Bible and teach them without preaching down to his readers. His tone is warm, welcoming, and encouraging. He can offer hope to readers even in the bleakest times. He does an amazing job at showing how Elijiah had his struggles but never wavered in his trust in God. He provided examples throughout and related them to the challenges we face in today's society.
It's so easy to dwell on the negatives, especially in this day and age, but Max offers hope when there may be little left to cling to. His writing and tone are so appropriate. He drives home the importance of prayer and of relying on it to survive the difficulties in life. He inspires readers to trust God throughout the book with personal stories as well as stories about others. He illustrates the amazing love and ability God has to help His children. God is capable of performing miracles every day.
There are so many quotes throughout the book that spoke to me, but since the book hasn't been published yet, I won't quote them here. The quotes are so meaningful, it's as though he's speaking to me directly. He speaks authentically as a true Christian, unlike others who preach it but fail to act in a Godly way.
I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who is feeling discouraged. It will speak to you and offer you hope in difficult times when you're struggling.
I honestly struggle to find words strong enough to describe what this book stirred in my heart, it’s that powerful. This isn’t just encouragement on a page, it’s life giving truth. It’s filled with hope that lifts you, strength that steadies you, and the kind of spiritual ammunition you need to stand when everything in you feels like giving up.
The story of Elijah is nothing short of gripping. You don’t just read it, you feel it. You walk through the drought, the fear, the pressure, the exhaustion. And yet, through it all, you see the undeniable hand of God protecting, providing and sustaining. The way God moves on behalf of His people is absolutely breathtaking.
And what hits the deepest is this: God doesn’t just work from a distance. He sees you through every moment, the highs, the lows, and the breaking points. He never leaves your side. He’s present. He’s faithful. He’s with you in it all.
This book doesn’t just speak to your situation…it strengthens your soul.

Unprecedented times. Do you remember that phrase? It was all over the place during the COVID outbreak that took place in the Spring of 2020 throughout that Fall. We were all begging for “precedented times”.
That was 6 years ago. By now, you would think things would calm down. Right? Not quite. Pressure seems to be mounting. People have given themselves over to extreme tribalism. If you haven’t picked a side (or even voiced an opinion about a side), then you are obviously against everybody else’s side. Stress is at an all-time high. You are probably starting to feel the anxiety mounting. Your breathing may even be a bit more shallow. The muscles in your shoulders are starting to bunch up.
What you need more than anything, right now, is a calm, reassuring voice. You need a wise statesman to speak up. Wisdom. Experience. And to be honest, even if you are not a person of faith, you wouldn’t mind someone speaking from an eternal perspective to calm your fears.
Then you hear the footsteps. You hear the throat cleared. And then you hear it. That voice. One you recognize for offering kind, reassuring, yet challenging words before. He’s speaking again. And the words are a refreshing rain on a dry, dusty, drought plagued land. America’s Pastor, Max Lucado is here with the words you (your mind, soul, and spirit) need to hear.
Welcome back, Pastor Max. Thank you for the words that settle the restless heart. The troubled mind. The ravaged spirit. You just opened up your Bible to the Old Testament and lead us through the life of Elijah. You touched on the experiences that may not read exactly like our lives, but the emotions and situations we are facing. And like the seasoned, wise sage, you spoke directly to us.
It is a pleasure to have set under your teaching, yet again.

In Take Courage bestselling author, Max Lucado, offers a fresh and insightful perspective on the story of Elijah the prophet. As in his other works, Max combines biblical truths and his storytelling style in an easy to read and understand format. This study of Elijah’s life demonstrates how we can weather the storms of life and have courage in today’s turbulent times.
Max’s daughter, Andrea Ramsey, has prepared a “Questions for Reflection” section at the end of the book to further enhance understanding which is suitable for group or individual study. I really enjoyed reading this book as I have all of Max’s writings through the years and highly recommend it.

Would give this book 6 stars if I could! Favorite Christian author, Max Lucado, has given us a portrait of Old Testament Elijah, a prophet that I've never taken the time to give much consideration to. Max highlights aspects of Elijah's character that enable him to live a victorious life when surrounded by evil. He takes Elijah's strengths and weakness and brings them into my contemporary world, and allows me to see how Elijah can be my mentor as I approach struggles that are not really that different than his were. Max weaves in warm and wonderful stories of folks he's known through his lifetime to illustrate that our common issues can be addressed by realizing God's unconditional love and provision over us.
I am inspired after finishing Unbreakable Courage! This is a book that I'll be referring back to as the hard things appear in my life.
The book would be great to study in a group of any and all ages. The last 20% or so consists of questions to ponder and discuss.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read and give my honest review of Unbreakable Courage.

This was a deeply encouraging and faith-filled read that offers exactly what the title promises—courage in the face of life’s challenges.
Unbreakable Courage is written in Max Lucado’s signature style—warm, accessible, and filled with meaningful reflections. Each chapter feels like a gentle reminder that even in uncertain or difficult moments, there is strength to be found through faith and trust.
What stood out most to me was how relatable and uplifting the message is. The book doesn’t shy away from real struggles, but instead meets them with hope and reassurance. It’s the kind of read you can pick up when you need a little encouragement and walk away feeling steadier and more grounded.
I also appreciated the short, digestible format. It makes it easy to read a chapter at a time and reflect on the message without feeling overwhelmed.
The only reason this isn’t a full 5 stars for me is that some of the themes felt familiar, especially if you’ve read other works by this author. While still impactful, it didn’t always feel entirely new.
Overall, this is a comforting, inspiring read that will resonate with readers looking for faith-based encouragement and strength during challenging times.
Perfect for: readers who enjoy devotional-style books, uplifting messages, and faith-centered reflections on courage and resilience.

Inspiring read. Lucado once again inspires courage and fortitude in an increasingly anti religious community. Brave and inspiring for this generation.

Book Review: Unbreakable Courage by Max Lucado
Some voices carry a kind of spiritual steadiness that feels like a hand on the shoulder—gentle, reassuring, and quietly authoritative. Max Lucado has long been one of those voices. For decades, he has offered readers a blend of biblical insight, storytelling warmth, and pastoral compassion that feels like a deep breath in a frantic world. In Unbreakable Courage, he returns with a message that could not be more timely: courage is not the absence of fear, but the presence of God in the midst of it.
The premise of the book is simple but powerful. Lucado takes readers back to the story of Elijah, one of Scripture’s most compelling and complex prophets. Elijah lived in a time of upheaval—spiritual drought, political corruption, cultural confusion, and emotional exhaustion. His world was fractured, contentious, and spiritually dry. In other words, it looked a lot like ours.
Lucado draws this parallel with remarkable clarity. He doesn’t sensationalize the times we live in, nor does he minimize the very real anxiety, division, and fatigue that define modern life. Instead, he gently places Elijah’s story alongside our own and invites readers to see what Elijah saw: a God who remains faithful, present, and powerful even when everything around us feels unstable.
The book opens with a recognition that many readers will resonate with immediately: the constant stream of difficult news, the sense of cultural disorientation, the exhaustion that comes from trying to stay hopeful in a world that feels increasingly chaotic. Lucado names these realities without dramatizing them. His tone is steady, pastoral, and deeply human. He understands the emotional weight people carry, and he writes as someone who has carried it too.
From there, Lucado guides readers through key moments in Elijah’s life—his bold confrontation with Ahab, his prayer for rain, his triumph on Mount Carmel, his collapse under the broom tree, and his encounter with God in the gentle whisper. Each scene becomes a window into the kind of courage God cultivates in His people: courage rooted not in personality or strength, but in trust.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is Lucado’s ability to make ancient Scripture feel immediate. He doesn’t merely retell Elijah’s story; he brings it to life. Readers feel the drought, the tension, the fear, the loneliness. They feel Elijah’s exhaustion and his desperation. And through it all, they see the God who sustains him—sometimes through miracles, sometimes through silence, sometimes through simple provision like rest and food.
Lucado’s writing is characteristically warm and accessible. He speaks to the reader, not at them. His tone is conversational, encouraging, and infused with hope. He has a gift for taking familiar biblical stories and revealing fresh layers of meaning without ever sounding academic or heavy‑handed. His illustrations—drawn from personal experiences, pastoral encounters, and everyday life—give the book a grounded, relatable feel.
Thematically, Unbreakable Courage is a field manual for faith in difficult times. Lucado highlights several practices drawn from Elijah’s life:
Waiting for God in solitude and silence
Praying bold, impossible prayers
Living with expectation that God can disrupt the ordinary
Turning to God in emotional lows rather than withdrawing
Recognizing the spiritual battles beneath our struggles
These themes are not presented as formulas but as invitations—gentle reminders that courage grows in the soil of trust, and trust grows when we make space for God.
Lucado also addresses the emotional dimension of faith with unusual tenderness. He acknowledges that even the strongest believers can feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or afraid. Elijah himself reached a breaking point, collapsing under the weight of exhaustion and despair. Lucado handles this moment with pastoral sensitivity, reminding readers that God does not shame Elijah for his weakness. Instead, God meets him with rest, nourishment, and a whisper of reassurance. It is one of the most moving sections of the book, and Lucado’s reflections on it are among his finest.
From a craft perspective, the book is beautifully paced. Lucado alternates between biblical exposition, personal storytelling, cultural reflection, and practical application. The chapters are concise but rich, making the book easy to read yet deeply nourishing. His prose is clear, warm, and unpretentious—qualities that have made him beloved by millions of readers.
The early reviewers’ praise is well‑earned. Many describe the book as “life‑giving truth,” “spiritual ammunition,” and “a refreshing rain on a dry, dusty land.” These are not exaggerations. Lucado’s writing has always had a way of settling the restless heart, and Unbreakable Courage may be one of his most timely offerings. In an age marked by anxiety, division, and exhaustion, his words feel like a steadying hand.
Who is this book for? Anyone who feels overwhelmed by the times we live in. Anyone who longs for hope. Anyone who needs a reminder that God is still present, still powerful, and still working. It is especially meaningful for readers walking through seasons of fear, burnout, or spiritual dryness. Lucado’s voice is gentle enough for the hurting and strong enough for the weary.
In the end, Unbreakable Courage is not just a book about Elijah. It is a book about the God of Elijah—the God who speaks in whispers, who strengthens the fainthearted, who sends rain after drought, and who calls His people to stand firm even when the world feels unsteady. Lucado reminds readers that courage is not something we muster; it is something God cultivates in us as we lean into His presence.
This is a book that will calm fears, steady hearts, and renew hope. It is a timely reminder that while the world may feel chaotic, God remains unchanging—and His courage is available to all who seek Him.
