Description

Loire Valley, 1895. When seventeen-year-old Sara Thibault's father is killed in a mudslide, her mother sells their vineyard to a rival family whose eldest son marries Sara's sister, Lydia. But a violent tragedy compels Sara and her sister to flee to New York, forcing Sara to put aside her dream to follow in her father's footsteps as a master winemaker. Meanwhile, Philippe Lemieux has arrived in California with the ambition of owning the largest vineyard in Napa by 1900. When he receives word of his brother's death in France, he resolves to bring the killer to justice. Sara has travelled to California in hopes of making her own way in the winemaking world. When she encounters Philippe in a Napa vineyard, they are instantly drawn to one another, but Sara knows he is the one man who could return her family's vineyard to her, or send her straight to the guillotine. This riveting tale of betrayal, retribution, love, and redemption, Kristen Harnisch’s debut novel immerses readers in the rich vineyard culture of both the Old and New Worlds, the burgeoning cities of late nineteenth-century America and a spirited heroine’s fight to determine her destiny.

In 1895, it’s not the “done thing” for a young woman to go into the wine making business, but that doesn’t stop Sara Thibault. She plans on following in her father’s footsteps to become a vintner on the family’s Loire Valley land. When her father is killed in an accident, Sara’s mother sells the vineyard to rival Bastien, the man who has married Sara’s sister. But when Bastien makes it clear he wants Sara more than he wants the land, a violent act sends the sisters on the run to America. While it is always Sara’s dream to return home to reclaim her family’s land, for the time being she settles in California. She hopes to perfect her winemaking skills there, but to her horror, she encounters Phillipe, Bastien’s brother and the man intent on making his brother’s killer pay. This is a big, bold. historical novel full of wine, lust and old fashioned honor

pleasant well written read, especially while it's snowing outside! Yes, it's a little predictable but you'll learn something about the wine business. I enjoyed the characters (felt Sara was well done) and the novel. Recommend if you like historical romance.

Historical fiction at its best! From the ancient wineries of the Loire Valley in France to Napa Valley in California, Sara Thibault is determined to make her own way as a vintner. Hastily leaving France with her sister Lydia, she makes her way to early 1800s New York and on to California. With enough romance and a twisting plot, this is a wonderful book, including picturesque description of the wine country both in California and Europe.

A delightful sweeping historical story with sparkling dialogue, wonderful characters and locations that take your breath away. From the vineyards of France, to New York and finally to California this epic story about a daughter determined to follow in her Father's footsteps and be a Vintner against all odds of her time is simply reading perfection. Sara Thibault is a young woman to admire of her own fierce determination to have a career unknown to women of her generation. Her dream is to work and eventually run her family’s vineyard. Her story begins with the death of her Father and sale of her beloved family vineyard and takes the reader on her journey to her own personal redemption. She is a wonderful character, brilliantly drawn and independent.
This is a journey through her determination and courage to stand on her own among a male dominated profession. With sheer will she follows her dream . The descriptions of the wine making and the vineyards are magnificently drawn and satisfying to the reader. Its a real journey through the process that is described in a exciting and fun way to the reader. The subject matter is very well researched by the author. The characters are very well drawn and each adds to the story. This sweeping drama is a very enjoyable read. It has all the elements of a good historical fiction, drama, suspense and some romance. It also has a woman of great character to be admired by her readers. You will find yourself cheering for her success throughout the book . This is a gripping wonderful work of historical fiction to be devoured by the reader from beginning to end. I found I was unable to put this book down until the last page. it is that engrossing from beginning to end. I hope Kristen Harnisch will continue this as a series as its a wonderful story. Thank you for the advance reader copy She Writes Press.

A beautifully written historical novel. The author puts you right in the story with the amazing descriptions of the Loire Valley & then Napa Valley. And the main character Sara is such a strong force that you can't help but root for her.

Historical fiction is not my favorite genre but I really enjoyed this book. There were parts that I knew what was going happen but that doesn't take away from this great read.

I just loved this book and can't wait to read her next one. It's a fascinating story about wine-making in France and Napa Valley, days of old, abuse, love, respect, etc. The characters come to life through the pictures painted by Harnish's words. I truly couldn't put it down.
