I certainly enjoyed it more once I got my head around what the book's actually about. I'd say it's mainly the story of Chandra, the reclusive princess who never expected to have influence, and the courtly schemes that rise up against her. Derek, the titular gift-knight, has a smaller role and really starts being a key player halfway through. Readers looking for murder mystery, intrigues, moments of wry commentary and subtle humor (who doesn't love poking fun at archaic laws) will find this a quick, tasty little read.
