Description
This collection of previously unpublished poems by masterful children’s book author Karla Kuskin (1932-2009) will delight readers ages 4-8 who love animals and their distinct personalities.
A Gray Cat Wanders is a charming collection of never-before-seen poems from the late Karla Kuskin, beloved author of The Philharmonic Gets Dressed and many other picture books. Here, Kuskin’s unique, witty voice weaves through each poem, creating an exquisite menagerie of verses about animals both mighty and small. Meanwhile, in the art, a gray cat wanders from page to page and can be seen, sometimes hidden, throughout the book.
Here is a treasury of animal poems that, coupled with acclaimed artist Marcellus Hall’s playful illustrations, will instill in young readers a sense of wonder for the critters around us.

'A Gray Cat Wanders' is a charming read for children and parents, as well. It is beautifully illustrated, and has a wonderful story to accompany it, as well.
We had dinner at our house last night, with my 2nd oldest and his wife and their young son. I hadn't had the time to read this as the previous book I had just finished reading and we had invited them for dinner. I wish I had read it earlier so I could read it to their son.
This is such a beautiful, if simple story, I loved it. The illustrations are filled with charm, as well as the story.

Mum review: this was a lovely little read for adults and children alike. I can picture a younger child being read it over and over, enjoying the pictures, the pleasant rhymes, and animal characters. My 8-year old also found it really valuable as a first introduction to poetry - learning about form and style. One to treasure and keep!
Kid review: It makes you think about how other living creatures think. You think things you haven't thought about before and how not everyone thinks like you think. You think about lots of things! The pictures were interesting. I think the author must be very smart.

I really loved this and it worked great for me! The illustrations are so beautiful and cozy. What I like about the poems is that they are simple, but also have a dash of humour interjected into them. And it really feels to me that they encapsulate what a cat might be thinking in certain circumstances. I think that children will enjoy the poems, but I think they will really love the illustrations. I have read some reviews that mention they want more plot from the book, but I think that the beauty of cat books is seeing the world through their eyes, and just being present in their daily lives. I hope you check this out and will enjoy it. It's a short read, and I think it would be perfect in schools, libraries, or in homes. I would like a copy myself because the illustrations were so serene and beautiful.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wordsong for an advanced reader copy of this poetry collection. All opinions are my own.

this was adorable, whimsical, and beautiful to look at. after paging through it myself, i showed it to my nephew (5) and we had so much fun. he laughed at some of the poems (he liked 'where is my toad' the best) and we spent so much time looking at every photo and pointing out the animals and what they were all getting up to. i plan to buy him a copy when this comes out, he's so excited he "got to read a book early" and can't wait to look at the pictures some more. so yeah, i'd say this is a very successful children's book. sweet and simple and fun to look at.
