Description
Broken Banners is a thrilling, fast-paced fantasy tale. It is the second novella of the series A Reaper of Stone. Reviewers compare it to the works of Brandon Sanderson, Sarah J Maas, and Joe Abercrombie. It is recommended for readers who enjoy epic fantasy, myth and legend, action, and/or stories with a strong female protagonist.
Slaughtered and left for crows, soldiers of the King’s Army lay dead in a field. A grim reminder: the king’s law ends at the gates of the capital.
Elinor fought for what she believed and now she is an outcast. No soldier will follow her. No officer will stand with her. Yet when she finds her brothers and sisters slaughtered, she cannot turn her back on them.
Long ago, they swore an oath. Not to the king, but to each other.
And woe to those who break that bond.

From Book 1, A Reaper of Stone:
Gelineau and King have created a multi-layered world which resounds with the influence of epic and traditional fantasy yet unfolds in the fast-paced and action-filled narrative which we’ve come to expect from modern fantasy... Gelineau and King have fashioned a universe I would wish to return to time and time again.

I was thoroughly surprised by how well this was written and how much thought had gone into the world-building and character development. It had all the key elements of a high/epic fantasy novel and even though it was only 90 pages long it still managed to pack a punch!

I absolutely recommend this series of books to anyone interested in really well done and intriguing fantasy. The authors not only have created a deep, cohesive world full of rich history and legend, but, have done so in the blink of an eye. Rarely have I been lucky enough to encounter such rich world building in so few pages. The world of these characters has seemingly burst into full-fledged life in just a few short chapters. Never-the-less it feels completely established with the underlying certainty that there is considerably more to be revealed. Volume 2 of Elinors tale catches us up on events shortly after book 1 and continues to make Elinor a character strong and honorbound to bring back the days of old when heroes protected the land and those less fortunate and unable to protect themselves. I'm hooked and cannot wait to journey as far into this story as the creators are going to take us. Only 2 volumes in and I am looking forward to a long and enjoyable ride.
